A small success story: $200k annually in profit with no startup expenses doing programming Posted: 07 Aug 2020 04:49 PM PDT I thought I'd share an honest rags to riches success story. After graduating college in 2014 with a physics degree and trying to start a business selling custom made computers, things were not going well at all and I was unable to pay rent. I had learned the basics of programming because I wanted to build a computer customizer on eBay, so I decided to start applying for programming jobs. I was lucky that a company was willing to take a chance on me, and I've switched companies over 4 times, increasing my pay and learning new skills every time. Last year, I decided to try starting a consultant business where I advise and do programming work for companies willing to pay me. It was a huge success right off the bat mainly because I was able to join a network(something like Upwork) that had a huge list of high value clients and not enough consultants. I was juggling two full time jobs and finally decided to quit my main job a few months ago and pursue consulting full time. Even though it seems the same, there's a huge difference working for yourself as a consultant. I don't feel like I "work for the man" at all. I set my own time, pick my own clients, and set my rate. I'm currently charging $100 an hour and have full 40 hours a week booked all the way at minimum until the end of this year, from just 1 client. The client before, I charged $120 an hour and billed 40 hours a week also. [link] [comments] |
How do you retain the client after signing them? Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:04 AM PDT Hi, I run a micro-SaaS that has a small number of customers. Obviously, I want to grow the number of customers, and the revenue of the SaaS. Apart from offering a good product and good customer service, what else can you do to keep them interested and signed up? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:43 AM PDT I am the only employee, we average sales of $70-$100k annually, before COVID. Lately I am just feeling burnt out, tired of dealing with customers and their demands. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Contractor charging for preconstruction. Am I off base? Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:02 PM PDT I run a finish carpentry company that provides interior custom woodworking services directly to homeowners and designers. We act as the general contractor on projects that are primarily interior woodwork in scope. Our sales process starts with pre-qualifying our leads by getting an idea of timeline, budget, and scope and trying to see if we're even a good fit personality-wise. We're starting to charge for the next phase, the estimate and preconstruction planning, but are fighting an uphill battle it seems. Asking for a retainer of 5% of the estimated scope of work to produce 10-12 hours of deliverables is about on par with our hourly production in the field dollar-wise. This policy has been met with a lot of resistance; clients are insulted at times, amused on occasion, and generally unreceptive to the idea of paying a dime for our time to plan their project. Many of our competitors do these things for free, but they are producing a lower quality product. Their pricing isn't as accurate, they miss items on the scope that end up as change items down the road, and generally don't produce our level of quality when executing the work. Am I crazy to insist on being paid for this work up front? Is it just the industry I'm in and the perceived class disparity? Going through a set of prints and adding up the footage of trim in each profile, adding up the doors and getting all the sizes and types correct, and planning handrails and other details takes a ton of time and I'm sick of giving that away. Opening bank for LLC of Non US Resident owner Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:52 PM PDT Recently, I have lauched a new eCommerce business and got great success. Now, I am looking to move business processes to USA under LLC. It seems there is no difference for a non-resident owner of LLC in which state to form an LLC. Tax implications will be the same (correct me if I am wrong). However, I cannot find a concrete answer if I will be able to open a bank account in a different state than LLC formation one. I have done the research and it seems that some sources say there will be no problem with that while others - its not possbile. Does any of you have experience with opening a bank in a different state than LLC formation one? Please let me know [link] [comments] |
International Shipping Questions Posted: 07 Aug 2020 09:40 PM PDT We make herbal blends. Just wondering if we are allowed to ship these blends internationally for the most part, as long as packaging meets fda requirements. [link] [comments] |

Any legal concerns if my business is using my parents business as supplier? Posted: 08 Aug 2020 12:08 AM PDT So for context, my parents run a small business in Lithuania where they make hand made jewelry. They primarily sell wholesale, but also direct to consumer on Etsy and Shopify. The issue with Shopify store is that they don't have technical how-to on running it, so I have been doing most of it since we started. However, since I had moved to a different country, there's been misc. issues with managing the store, such as keeping it up-to-date with their latest products, being unable to iterate quickly due to different opportunities in Denmark and Lithuania. I have been thinking it would be easier to open my own Shopify store (based in Denmark, on my own name), buy jewelry from my parents at wholesale prices (since that's their primary business anyway) and then sell it on this new store. Are there any legal problems anyone can think or otherwise? TLTR: I want to open a web shop (owned by me in Denmark) and sell items bought from my parents business (owned by my parents in Lithuania) at wholesale prices. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Aug 2020 05:58 PM PDT Hello, about a week ago I signed on for and created a website to start selling my products - signed up for Hostinger, which is quite affordable. I chose the Premium Shared Hosting plan, not the Business Shared Hosting plan, because my business is brand new and in general I don't expect to be too big of a business. Basically I'm selling ice headbands for migraine/headaches, which I would consider rather niche, and don't plan to do much marketing. I really mainly created the product to solve my own problem and am quite content with that, but would love to just sell some on the side to others who'd need it. I say all that to say, I don't expect to have a ton of traffic and really just wanted a basic website for light use/sale. My issue is this - right after signing up, a Hostinger employee informed that because I was using the WooCommerce plug-in and what not, my Premium Shared Hosting plan would likely not be sufficient and that I should upgrade. I really would prefer not to upgrade if not necessary because, while the price increase is minimal now, the price difference at time of renewing is considerable. But I'm on their current 30-day money back deal now, so I'm kind-of wanting to settle this dispute ASAP. So, has anyone else with small businesses used Hostinger and found that the Premium Shared Hosting plan was sufficient or had major issues running your website business with it? I'm certainly willing to upgrade if the literal life of my website depends on it, but if I don't have to I'm OK with it just being acceptable. Thoughts?? [link] [comments] |
Anyone else have issues with google maps marking them temporarily closed? Posted: 07 Aug 2020 01:39 PM PDT I've been back open since June and have contacted Google Maps via customer support at least 5 times since saying I'm open and I still get calls everyday asking if I'm open because google says it's temporarily closed. My business is mostly seasonal May-September and I can't imagine how many customers I've lost because of this. Extremely frustrated. Any ideas to rectify this would be appreciated! Posted: 07 Aug 2020 04:37 PM PDT Hello, guys! It's me again 😅 I an liking so far the E-Myth Revisited. I'm wondering if there are other books that I should read too. I am hoping more on managing business and marketing strategy. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
I keep getting hung up on the legal fears/details... Posted: 07 Aug 2020 05:56 PM PDT Anyone have any advice? I'm 90% ready to a launch a kids clothing brand, in which I enhance wholesale sweatshirts with patchwork I buy from China. I keep getting hung up on all the little what-if's / worst case scenarios about any legal ramifications even though the risk is super minimal. (i.e. - labeling, care instructions, testing fabrics for flammability / lead). I imagine this is a common issue with green entrepreneurs. I have an LLC and will be getting a biz insurance policy. Just curious if anyone has any words of wisdom. I feel like this is paralyzing me. [link] [comments] |
Banks offering small biz loans/lines of credit? Please help, Reddit. Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:54 AM PDT Hi, I am finding that banks are unwilling to lend during COVID, particular to a new business without a track record of history ie start up. Anticipating a $50K loan/credit. I've talked with Wells Fargo, Chase, and Capital One. Now to Reddit. Can someone help here by chance? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Aug 2020 05:27 PM PDT I'm thinking about starting a consulting firm to help small and mid-sized businesses successfully navigate through having custom software built for them. Things like how to properly budget, finding the right development company, and actually ending up getting what they want, etc. Totally non-technical. I'm looking to collect some horror stories that people have experienced in their businesses. I'm looking to validate the business concept and have some good stories I could share with prospective clients. I have my own stories, but would like to gather more. Thanks in advance! Individual Tax Preparation Service - What Tax Preparation Software to Use? Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:06 PM PDT Hello all, I wanted to start a tax preparation service focused solely on individuals' and their federal and state tax filings. I am a Controller for a mid sized company with five years of public accounting experience and three years of private experience. Anyways, is anyone aware of a tax preparation software that I could purchase that files directly to the IRS and the respective state upon completion? I have used software such as Ultra Tax CS, but I am looking for a software that is relatively inexpensive until the side hustle blossoms and my clientele is much larger than the fifteen or so folks I currently assist. Any advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Go To Solution for Static Website for Business? Posted: 07 Aug 2020 03:36 PM PDT Wondering your thoughts on the best platforms for static websites? I have some Shopify sites but Shopify isn't the ideal for a static site. Any suggestions? Is everyone the same or is Wix or GoDaddy the go to for a static site in which I have no need to update content except for updating a Blog section and having people email me? [link] [comments] |
What are the best ways to advertise job positions? Posted: 07 Aug 2020 02:56 PM PDT I found a couple of the same post as this, but they're a few years old so I figured I'd ask again to get a more updated response. What's the best way to get good quality candidates? In addition to good quality, what option is the most efficient when it comes to price? LinkedIn Jobs is $10-20 per view of the posting, not sure how much Indeed and Monster are exactly. Any feedback is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Any business owners from Germany ? Posted: 07 Aug 2020 02:36 PM PDT I know that the USA is a great economy for enterpreneurs of all kinds and small business owners, but what about Europe, highly focusing on German speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). I don't know why I have the idea that everything is done over those places, or that regulations are too high for small shop owners or non tech enterpreneurs to do something. How is it over there ? Can a bank refuse my application for business account because I gave an EIN? Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:19 AM PDT Hello everyone, I have been self-employed and a sole-proprietor for a few years. My online business has become my main source of income. I wanted to create a business account with my bank. However, they rejected my application because they claimed I only provided my EIN instead of my SSN. Can a bank refuse an application because I provided in EIN number? I already have personal accounts with at this financial institution. Has this ever happened to anyone? I have done research online, but I cannot find an answer to this question. *Update* I gave both my SSN and EIN on my application. [link] [comments] |
