This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

U.S. may need another 1 billion square feet of warehouse space by 2025 as e-commerce booms

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/09/us-may-need-another-1-billion-square-feet-of-warehouse-space-by-2025.html

With more people clicking "buy" online, demand for industrial real estate could reach an additional 1 billion square feet by 2025, according to commercial real estate services firm JLL.

The boom for fulfillment centers comes as the traditional retail real estate industry is suffering with store closures piling up and rents plummeting, as companies look to negotiate new leases.

I'm sure you guys see this post often, but, I'm excited! I only wish I had started investing when I was 20. I'm 29 now. Better than than never, right?

I'm going for long term investing. My first purchase was in AMD! :D

I don’t understand it, I didn’t realise until coming onto this subreddit that it’s possible to know the exact price a stock will dip to, and exactly when it will reach that point.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:30 PM PDT

It's absolutely crazy, I hear people saying that when NIO reaches $9 in a few weeks everyone should buy it back and more just like this, I didn't realise people could so confidently predict the price of stocks, it is very cool.

    Edit: /s

As if being backed by the Chinese gov and by giant Tencent, and exceeding Q2 sales forecast wasn't enough.

Gotta hoard shares while they're still 2 digits.

This could be very interesting, they already have enough liquidity to last till 21 with additional funds from 6 largest banks in China this could cause a large move

Made the mistake of buying a 3x leveraged ETF - DFEN

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 08:46 AM PDT

I made the mistake of buying a 3x leveraged ETF (Direxion Daily Aerospace & Defense Bull 3X Shares Direxion Daily Aerospace (DFEN)).

I'm down 40% now, should I just cut my losses and get out of it. I assumed ETF's were safe but just realized leveraged ETFs are NOT safe for long term investments. I wanted to invest in an aerospace/defense ETF due to space this sector becoming more important (space force, more satellites being launched per year, etc...).

How should I exit the 3x ETF DFEN stock?

Edit: I work in the space sector as a spacecraft systems engineer - I understand this industry and sector fairly well. I am not saying I know what the future holds, but from my understanding space is a growing sector and will likely continue to grow, in both the private and government sectors.

My 1 year TSLA ride and how I DCA out of my position.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 03:56 PM PDT

Hi all. Today I officially closed out my Tesla position at least for the time being. For me the price has gotten to high for my personal comfort level so I sold my last 2 shares and I feel fine about it. Here is a story of my 1 year ride on the Tesla coaster.

My first purchase was 5 shares back in June of 2019 @ a price of $220 a share. I work in the solar industry and was seeing how many power walls my company was installing to pair with solar projects. I also was noticing more and more Tesla's on the road and this is what swayed my decision to jump into what at the time was considered a bad stock. By July the stock was up to $260 and I was feeling great about my investment. Earning were just around the corner so I decided to hold and see what happens. It did not go well. The stock dropped right back to my purchase price and even dipped below a few times. I stuck with it because I believed in the company and my position never got to -10% which is a rule I try to follow and cut loses there. Thank good I stuck with it because we all know what happened from there. October earnings hit and the price jumped and continued to climb.

My next purchase was 1 share @ $354 in late November. Next quarter earnings come out and that's when things really got crazy. By January I was over 100% return on my investment. This is where I made my first sale. I sold 3 shares or half my position @ $479 a share and essentially took all my risk off the table. This is a strategy I always take with any stock that has a 100% return. I've been lucky in the 10ish years I've been investing to have had that opportunity several times. It helps that I started investing in the greatest bull marker ever but I also did my research, learned from past mistakes, and tried not to repeat those mistakes.

My next sale was 1 Share @ $731 in early February. This locked in official profit but also left me with 2 shares to wait and see if this rocket ship would continue. Covid hit and the market dived. However it was very easy for me to sit and watch as my Tesla shares went from $900 to $400 because I had already made money on the trade. Had I been smart I would have bought back in and rode the wave again but I had decided to put most of my profits into QQQ and I also wasn't sure the selling was over.

Today after seeing the crazy run Tesla has been on I decided to end this adventure for now and sold my last 2 shares @ $1393. This put my total profit on this trade at $3,493 minus some small commissions.

My average purchase price was approx $243 and my average sale price was $825. Sure had I've had the guts to keep all 6 shares I would have done even better but for me I feel much better reducing my exposure as a stock climbs that rapidly.

I see lots of post on here about DCA into a stock but not many on DCA out which to me is a great strategy as well. It's incredibly hard to nail to perfect time to get into a position and it's just as hard to decide the perfect time to get out. DCA both ways for me takes away some of that FOMO especially if you have already locked in 100% gains.

Hope you enjoyed my story. Keep learning, keep investing.

    Crack open a book

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 12:22 PM PDT

I'm seeing a lot of people who are new to stocks (like me, I just started this week) and 95% of the questions being ask by newbies could be answered if you just do a little reading. It's so easy. It's getting hard to get up to date news and tips without seeing "I need advice because I am new". I'm also pretty young and just bought in this week. I asked econ majors for the basics but also did A LOT of reading over the weekend before I bought in. Js.

Any ETF's that are purely tech? I noticed tech is outperforming every sector

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 01:55 PM PDT

SPY is being dragged down by it's heavy bias towards boomer stocks like Johnson & Johnson, JPM, Procter & Gamble, UnitedHealth Group, Exxon Mobil, etc. Just absolute indebted boomer garbage.

Is there an ETF for prime young companies that is heavily weighted with SaaS or tech like Veeva, Intel, Tesla, MongoDB, etc. It has to be young and fast growing.
