When a stock is halted, how are orders queued?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:52 AM PDT

If a stock is halted and everyone is placing buy orders.

So do market buy orders get placed before limit buys?

Does it matter who placed orders first?

Does it not matter at all and is just all random?

If you change your order does it affect your queue if there is one?

Pretty sure PSX is about to pop in a big way/long term tomorrow

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 06:30 PM PDT

    reasons for saying so:

    - earnings tomorrow morning

    - huge influx of inflows to it's ETF 3 days ago: https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/notable-etf-inflow-detected-ixc-psx-slb-mpc-2020-07-27

    - it's easy-to-borrow and has been falling sharply lately

    - everyone seems to be so "sure" the earnings tomorrow will be horrible and the stock will tank as a result

    - watching the level 2 after hours today, I noticed some huge dark pool orders drop in that were always for 63.09, which was the closing price at the bell. this happened consistently anytime someone bought at a price lower than that

    - per the finviz daily chart (see here), we landed right on the support line that's extending up from the March/April low

    - several insider Buy's (and no selling) in the past few weeks, all right in line with today's "bottom" (see here)

    - the 200 SMA on the 5 min got worked up to (from below) all day and 20 minutes before the close, just casually fell away to close the day ~$0.50 below, so crossing above it tomorrow will be fast/easy (see here)

    - the dollar was up today. oil was up today. good earnings from the big tech's shows people are spending money

I expect this will open tomorrow with a huge sell-off to get everyone's expectations confirmed and go short, only to sky-rocket and never return. good luck

    Indices to watch

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 07:58 PM PDT

I'm starting to dip my toes into the idea of day trading a bit.

I think a good place to start is by watching the sectors. Should give me a good idea of where to start looking for specific stocks.

I go into ToS and there's way more sector indices to watch. I was hoping to use these to narrow down what I have to look at but there are a lot of these too!

There are S&P, NASDAQ, DOW and NYSE sector indices.

Are any of these not worth watching and using to narrow down my search for opportunities?

Diving into this world, it's so vast it's very overwhelming. Trying to do what I can to shrink it down to something more digestible and tangible.

Any other advice/suggestions in regards to this would really be appreciated!

Help me understand Federal Withholding Tax

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 05:32 PM PDT

I'm a foreign, non-US resident, recent graduate looking into starting to invest likely through IB or TD Ameritrade.

From my understanding as a foreign national without a tax treaty with the US, I will be subjected to the standard tax rate of 30% on all income made through dividends but not on capital gains.

My question is: When it comes to US listed stocks would it be wise to focus on growth ETFs rather than in total market index ETFs, in order to minimize dividend paying companies in my portfolio for tax purposes?

Are there any good resources to read up on for someone in my circumstance?

    Appreciate the help.

Significant Insider Trading Activity (Last 7 Days)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:29 PM PDT

This is a list of the top 20 companies that experienced the largest change in insider shares in the last seven (7) days. The SEC defines an insider as any officer, director or 10% shareholder. It is not illegal for these people to buy or sell their own shares. In fact, since most of them get paid in stock options, it is expected. However, it is illegal for them to trade on inside information that has not been made public. So for example if there are drug trial results that are bad and not public, insiders cannot dump shares. That said, many people have observed that insiders - in general - seem to have a good track record at timing their purchases. All trades that are marked as part of a 10b5 plan are excluded from this report.

Anyone creating a stop loss order before big tech earnings today?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 12:01 PM PDT

Mostly concerned about Apple, but other big tech names could see a bad quarter, not to mention the congressional inquiry going on. Based on the wacky earnings movements during this RH era, I feel like AAPL will either go up 10% or down 10% overnight. Setting a hesitant stop loss order at $381 I think. QCom earnings seem to suggest that the iPhone 5G will be delayed. However, the price has been going up today despite the markets being red today. Thoughts?

Significant Activist Hedge Fund Activity (Last 7 Days)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:29 PM PDT

These are the latest Schedule 13D forms filed by activist investors in the last 7 days. Activist investors are investors that make an investment with the intention of influencing management in some way. There is evidence that following activist investors into investments can generate excess returns. Schedule 13G forms, in contrast, are filed by significant investors with no intention of influencing management (such as Index funds).

There is always a lot of interest in insider trades, but what a lot of people probably don't realize is that hedge fund activity is probably more predictive of future returns than insider activity. The reason is that hedge funds (a) have large research budgets, and (b) have a choice where to put their money. In contract, insiders have no choice where to put their money, but only when to time their transactions.

    New Filings

This table lists new 13D filings in the last week. A new filing does not necessarily indicate a new position, as investors frequently accumulate in advance before reaching the filing threshold.

ELI5: Why did Treasury yields tank in the mid-March sell-off?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:14 PM PDT

The fundamental bond yield/price relationship is inverse. Understanding that there was a massive rush to liquidity in March across all financial asset markets, why did we see Treasuries dip to some of their lowest yields ever? My thought is massive selling would do the opposite and send yields sky high?

    Swing Trade Studying

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 09:03 AM PDT

I want to focus on swing trades. I know that's pretty vague, but I made a bit of money on options and I want to switch gears and focus mainly on taking regular positions for a few days to a few weeks. For those that trade this way, how would you suggest learning how to analyze specifically for swings? Are there any good books on swing trading methodology you would recommend? Thanks!

The GDP drop is getting twisted.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 05:17 PM PDT

The 32.9% rate is the seasonally adjusted annual rate (which assumes that the current contraction lasts for a year at full blown capacity).

The actual YOY contraction is 9.5% (still not great, worse than the annualized rate for Q4 in 2008 which was 8.4%.

"We are heading into Apple's earnings report with a higher level of investor interest relative to recent history given the confluence of softer macro but also low bar of expectations," they said.

What are they building here with 'low expectations' / 'high interest'?

Burcon Nutrascience (BU.TO) Part II (Canadian Stock)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:47 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I thought id share this undervalued stock with you guys! I believe Burcon Nutrascience (BU.TO) is undervalued and we will see this much higher than what it is right now. I shared this DD with another page yesterday when it was at 2.16 (now at 2.40), and I thought id share it here as well!

"In an update to clients on Tuesday, Hammill reiterated his "Buy" rating and 12-month target of $3.00, which at press time represented a projected return of 45 per cent"

I believe that it will surpass the $3.00 target before September. As I mentioned in my previous post, Burcon is opening one of the largest processing facilities in the world in Winnipeg.

"Merit has further strengthened its financial position as it drives forward to complete its state-of-the-art plant protein production facility in Winnipeg," said Johann F. Tergesen, Burcon's president and CEO in a June 22 news release, "Merit fully anticipates future increases in demand and is well positioned to increase planned capacity when the time is right."

    Watchlist: 7/30 Speculation, Short-Squeezes, & GDP Data

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 04:41 AM PDT

    Market Notes:

KODK showed the market is alive and speculation can drive massive moves after several weeks without a major run-up and most breakouts failing. Later in the day short-squeezes drove price spikes in BLNK & KNDI later in the day as the EV sector appears to be reigniting.

GDP data from Q2 is due out this morning. I don't expect a strong reaction from the markets since it's telling a story from the past and the market is forward-looking.

Futures are down this morning after a strong trend day and rally yesterday. I'm going to stick with small positions through the end of the week to see how things shake out.

    Watchlist:

CLSK is a low float, resistance at $7.34

ONCS is a low float, watching for a setup above $5

    BGFV has resistance at $7.17

BLNK is a low float, on watch

LPTH is a lowish float, resistance at $4.10

USX is a lowish float, watching for a continuation

    ICLK has resistance at $7

    GRWG has support at $8.50

    HOME is on watch

    TAST watching for a continuation

YCBD watching for a setup above $3.47

    KNDI is on watch

PEIX is on watch, probably a little overextended now

    ATEN has resistance at $8.69

    REED has resistance at $1.40

    STLK has resistance at $6.71

GSS watching for support at $4, resistance at $4.40

ADMP support at $1.20 and resistance at $1.50

Is there a tool to see large orders that have been placed?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 05:34 AM PDT

I have been thinking about it and if someone buys 10 million dollars worth of shares they probably know what their doing so I was going to follow their lead but the best tool I could find for this is Market Chameleon but idk how quickly it updates since it's showing the same orders as it did yesterday morning. Can anyone recommend a good website or app for this?

Shorting Hard to Borrow Equities - Tastyworks versus TradeZero US

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:33 AM PDT

This probably seems like a strange comparison, especially given Tastyworks is lesser known and geared more towards options. But these are the two I have narrowed it down to for shorting HTB. I have TD Ameritrade and they require a $100k min to get access to hard to borrow shorting so I am looking for another broker. (Interactive brokers and centerpoint also have minimums)

Tastyworks and TradeZero are two solid platforms that require no minimum (other than margin req) to get access to HTB stocks. I assume their availability of HTB stocks is roughly the same and perhaps the mobile apps are both sufficient (relatively - all trading apps have poor reviews). Trade zero however has this new 5x locate fee on the first overnight which seems a bit ridiculous.

Any other thoughts on the advantages or drawbacks of each? And does anyone here actually use Tastyworks given its small?
(Unrelated to the main topic here but I also trade options occasionally and TastyWorks has nice preset options strategies)

Fun fact - Creator of TastyTrades/Tastyworks founded ThinkorSwim many years ago and sold it to TD Ameritrade.
