Moving to USA (Idaho) from UK, what should i be looking for with a healthcare plan? How do I tell a good plan from a bad one?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:42 AM PDT

So ive been interviewed for a job in Idaho, and i think I'm a strong candidate. I'd be moving across with my wife and twin 2 year olds. There's the plans offered by my employer, one is low cost/high deductible (which scares me frankly) and the others are with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Idaho.

Having lived in the UK all my life, I've never had to deal with getting health cover beyond buying travel insurance. What do i look out for? What makes a good plan good or a bad plan bad?

    Thanks!

Can you be denied in the future for having had confirmed coronavirus?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 03:23 PM PDT

I want to get tested for coronavirus but I don't want insurance companies accessing that information and then denying me in the future if it comes up positive. Do you think that is a possibility?

    UK Car Insurance Renewal Question

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 04:44 AM PDT

Apologies for the basic question, but if I'm renewing my car insurance am I still insured for the full day on the date my current insurance expires?

So if it expires on the 12th, would I set the start date for my new insurance as the 12th or the 13th? I just ask because delaying by 1 day is £21 cheaper.

My car insurance lapse during the COVID-19

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 04:32 AM PDT

On Jan. 02, 2020 I got car insurance by Geico but unfortunately met in an accident the following week which was apparently my fault. Geico then told me my coverage will be cancelled on January 31st because Of the accident. After January 31st I did not proceed to get coverage from another company because my car was still being fixed and I also did not return the plates immediately because in New York you have 30 days to surrender the plates. After my car was fixed New York began to seriously shut down because of the pandemic including the DMV. I kept the plates on the car all throughout March - June 13th when the plates were stolen from my backyard. I kept it that long because I couldn't turn in via the DMV because of the pandemic but I recently found out that I could've mailed it in. I also did not drive the car at all. Honestly didn't think it would be a big deal because of the pandemic. Now my registration and license is suspended because of lapse in coverage and I have no idea how to go about getting them restored without paying all that money.

To sum this up so everyone understands my main concern; insurance cancelled January 31st because of accident, I didn't bring in plates immediately because I had 30 days to do so, after car was fixed then comes the pandemic, plates were then stolen on June 13th. What is the best way to go about this and to get my license restored. I have a police report of stolen plates but wouldn't I still have lapse in coverage from January 31st to June 13th (day the plates were stolen?) will the DMV forgive this whole situation because of the pandemic?

Update: I no longer have that car so it is not registered to me anymore. My license being restored is my main concern.

    Allstate auto claim

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 03:53 PM PDT

I was hit by an Allstate insured, so Allstate will pay $757 to have my car's dent fixed. But I'd rather have the cash, and I would settle for less than $757. Is that possible?

    Front bumper annihilated

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 03:19 AM PDT

I was driving home to Atlanta from Birmingham, Alabama and drove into an object that I did not see until the last second and it took out my bumper, fog light and splash guard from my car. 2 other vehicles followed by me hit the same thing and pulled over to check for damages. The first car was fortunately fine with minor damage but the second vehicle suffered major cosmetic damages to leaks from the car.

I already called my insurance company(allstate) to describe what happened, and they stated that I was at fault and have to pay the $500 deductible. Since two other vehicles hit the same thing I hit, should I still be at fault for the accident and would all insurance companies put you at fault for it?

    In Need Of Serious Advice

Need Help, Insurance Won't Really Be Doing Much

    Hey all,

So today I was driving to my house and I got into my neighborhood. I was driving about 25mph when I seen 2 homeless people (male and female) on a bicycle. I didn't think much of it, they were in the side of the rode. I get a bit closer, and all of a sudden the guy decides to swerve into the front of my car. Like seriously, how did you not hear my car? And how did you manage to perfectly run into the FRONT of my car. I got out the car, and saw they were both getting up. I asked if they were okay, and both stated yes but I saw the guy looked a little impaired (from drugs or maybe alcohol). I saw the front of my car was scratched to hell, and he fell on my windshield so it was shattered on the passenger side. I asked him if he could stay here til the cops came and he started cussing at me and trying to bike away... I asked him where he was going and that he needed to stay here with me because this was his fault. He was a Hispanic guy and i think he had warrants because he started telIing me that if I called the cops he would find me and kill me... I wasn't intimidated, but then I started taking pictures and he went to the back of the alley. I live near a cemetery and the alley leads to one. He saw an open fence area and took his bike with him and I tried to chase him and the girl he was with down. I got pictures of him but I didn't want to leave my car.

Anyways, I called the cops and my insurance and the cops couldn't do much. I have insurance with Allstate and the most they can do is cover my windshield but even then, since it's a collision they need an estimate. So basically now, I'm driving with a broken windshield and I work the next 4 days... like seriously. To make things worse, I JUST bought this car 6 days ago. I had an 01 accord that I had for 5 years and I never had anything happen to me.

Continuing, I have a deductible of $1000 for repairs. The hood doesn't look too bad, but there's a huge scratch on it and the hood is a little bent. And my better has a dent and it's slightly tilted. I don't have a lot of money to spare right now. Since the damage might no be over $1000, I might not even do the claim and just fix it myself. I don't really know what to do here, and I'm not sure what to ask for this. I'm very lost. I called my insurance but they told me I have to wait for an estimate. I know the obvious answer is to wait for the estimate, but I'm just stressed.

So my truck is recently considered a total loss due to hail damage. I was wondering if I accepted the settlement that allowed me to keep my truck. If My GAP insurance would still cover the remainder of my loan even tho I retain possession of the truck?

Electric service line damage advice (Michigan - Liberty Mutual)

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:50 PM PDT

So my electrical service line (which runs underground from pedestal box to my house) randomly shorted out last night. I had an electrician come and repair it, but had to use a mini-excavator. I haven't gotten the bill yet, but I am certain it will be higher than my $1000 homeowner deductible. I have 2 questions:

    1. Is it likely this will be covered by my insurance?
    2. What language should I use when describing the issue to my insurance agent? My electrician said it was likely the line was damaged during installation and finally shorted out due to moisture/soil movement. Is there any other way to phrase this that will make it more likely for my claim to be covered?

    Thanks!

She won’t go through with the claim

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:15 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Let me get straight to the point:

I got in an accident in June, and I was at fault. I gave them my information and insurance.

At first, I told her not to file a claim cause I could cover the costa since there was barely any damage. But, eventually she wanted to go through my insurance, well not really my but my mother's insurance which was progressive.

So now there is this open claim, and no matter how much I try to contact her or the insurance company tries to contact her, they can't get to her. She's at the point where she has to take the car to a body shop and have them inspect it so Progressive can figure out the total of the costs. But she's completely MIA. Like what? Before she was super pissed because she claimed her car was leased and the lease was ending soon, but now she won't even pick up the phone?

I asked Progressive if there was a deadline for her and they told me she has 3 YEARS to file this stupid claim!!

It's just frustrating and makes it hard for me to shop for other insurance quotes.

    Do you have any advice?

    Btw I'm from brockton, MA

    Home Insurance Question

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 03:23 PM PDT

I recently filed for a Home Insurance claim and the restoration contractor gave a bid for 16K for a small leak, The insurance agreed to pay only 5.5K. I signed a contract telling I will go with him. He now wants me to go with a public adjustor telling me I will get what I deserve.

Now I have gotten 2 other quotes and they are 3.6K and 5.4K. The insurance has paid me close to 5K while the rest is depreciation and they said it will be paid after the work is done.

Now, I like the contractor who quoted me 3.6K as he seemed like a nice guy and knew what he was talking. If I were to go with him do I have to return the surplus money or do I keep the actual cash value and forego only the depreciation.

Also will I be in trouble for breaking a contract with the restoration company, I tried explaining multiple times to them in a polite manner and all they are interested is in more money. They already got paid around 1.5k from my insurance company for drying which was just a fan. I am not sure if this is the norm in the industry.

With this pandemic it is getting harder to find contractors.

The restoration company only gave a quote using the insurance software no work was done by them. The drying was paid by my insurance company.

    This is in Michigan US

    Thanks!

For those of an underwriter what's your day to day like?

With my condition I get really fatigue all throughout day, and would like to find a job that's between 20-32 Hours weekly. Is this a feasible goal? Or am I just wasting my time.

If you guys have any career recommendations I would love to know about them. Thank you for any help you can give me :)

Purchasing old car from friend, what insurance should I get?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 02:30 PM PDT

I'm planning to purchase a 2003 Nissan Xterra. This will be my first car I've purchased by myself so I have no real experience buying cars and I was hoping to get some insight. I have driven lots of cars before and have had a license for at least 10 years now (I'm 28, M). What insurance should I get? I live in NJ by the way. I've heard from varying opinions to only get liability insurance to needing to get comprehensive. What's the best course of action here? For context, I'm being sold the car for $2,000.

Selling our CO home. Asked agent to help change policy to new residence and he canceled our current policy before securing alternate coverage. HELP

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 09:49 PM PDT

We are moving from 31 forested acres with a five bedroom home to a small condo while the house is up for sale.

Our new agent was told the our current insurance company would not insure vacant property so they cancelled our coverage on the spot.

The agent then said it would be very difficult to find coverage due to fire danger, but he'd try.

He found a company that would insure it but the rate was $1800 for three months. (He said originally the company had a minimum of one year prepaid with no refunds which was $7,000 so we were getting a deal)

I am willing to move back in if I have to until it sells. I'm shocked I am in this position. I think the insurance agent realized his mistake when we told him this house could not be left without coverage.

I think we should have been informed before he canceled the coverage

    Any advice is appreciated.

Can an employer (payroll company) recoup an FSA account loss from previous years?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:55 PM PDT

    CA

I worked for a company that used a 3rd party payroll company that handled the payrolls, benefits and general HRs. One of the perks was an FSA account. I signed up for $2000 at the beginning of the year. I got furloughed and eventually laid off.

I used up ALL my FSA balance ($2000) for medical expenses/copays that were incurred before and during COVID. I believe, I've only contributed about $400 ish to my FSA.

It was my understanding that since the balance was available for me to use and if I left the company before making full contributions, the payroll company would eat up the lost. And also, since FSA is use it or lose it, if I had any unused balance by the end of the year, I'd forfeit the amount (profit for the company).

Now, I'm told if I come back to my company (they said they'd like me back when things are better), they'll recoup their loss. The payroll company rep even said if I get hired by another company that uses their service 4-5 years from now, they will make deductions to my future paychecks. ?

    Is this right? and legal?

Got a quote for my business - too good to be true?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 09:22 PM PDT

I got a quote for my business insurance this week and was hoping for some advice. We are a well servicing contractor in Alberta and our renewal is the 15th. Our revenue is going to be down 30% this year so I asked our broker to look for alternative options and see what we could do about the premiums. We have also sold off some of our equipment and discontinued some higher risk operations.

A few weeks ago another broker called me asking to quote. I said my broker is already getting me quotes and we are happy. He said they have exclusive access that other brokers cannot use, so even if my other broker goes to everyone else for quotes they can still do better. I ended up sending him my information and my current policies less the premiums, and after a few more emails back and forth I received my quote today.

They are 40% cheaper than my renewal quote and 50% cheaper than last year and claim the coverage is better. I don't understand how. Questions:

    • Current policy is replacement cost on items 3 years or newer then actual cash value. This policy is agreed value coverage, where in the event of a total loss your claim payout is the value filed with insurers less your deductible.
      • Can we actually insure for what a new unit would cost and expect to see it? We have a lot of equipment that is 7-10 years old that was $400,000 new but have been insuring it for much less for what it has depreciated to.
    • The full value of truck or trailer and attached equipment is covered under this quote, while your current program has the vehicle or trailer under the auto policy and the attached equipment under the equipment policy.
      • Is this common to cover our vehicles not on the automobile policy? We have been providing the value of just the equipment mounted on the chassis historically.
    • Entire liability tower now under one policy; excess automobile liability attaches at $2MM so current carrier will have to increase the auto limit. Our wording is tailored for oil and gas exposures, with longer discovery periods on pollution and much fewer exclusions.
      • Currently have $1,000,000 liability and an umbrella and excess. I just assumed that is how it is done. Is this common place? Is it normal to need to increase my auto limit?

Sorry if this is very specific, I just do not understand how this could be so cheap and I do not know where else to go. I asked him for some references so am waiting to hear back. Appreciate any input or other questions to ask.

    Renter’s Insurance if I don’t technically rent?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 09:10 PM PDT

So my husband and I live in his family's home, owned by a family trust. It's only him and I- we don't live with any of the owners.

There is no mortgage on the home, but they do carry homeowners insurance. We don't technically pay any rent- we just pay the bills and taxes, and it is an informal agreement. Can we still get renter's insurance?

I'd like to be covered if anything terrible happens! We're in Michigan if it matters. Thanks so much!

edit: other question I forgot- if I choose say, $20,000 in coverage- then everything is lost. Do they just give you a check for $20,000? Or should I only choose an amount for receipts/proof I have available? In other words, I don't want to pay for coverage I can't use because there's no way I've got receipts for most of my stuff anymore. I'd rather get a lower amount of coverage if that's how it works.

    Combining car insurance polices

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:30 PM PDT

My wife and I have been married for a year but still drive around with separate auto polices (NJ). I have GEICO and she uses State Farm. It's kinda annoying and hard to compare because we both have different levels of coverage.

I think I was able to get us a good deal with Progressive. $640 for both cars

She was overpaying for crap we can get elsewhere like roadside assistance and I am over paying for stuff like PIP because I'm nervous about getting medical bills paid.

Basically what I did when combining was to knock down PIP to state minimum $15k/ $2.5k deductible, set as secondary because we both have health insurance.

I left her collision and comp deductible at $500. ($50 glass)

I left my collision and comp deductible at $1000. ($50 glass)

I guess the question is, am I making a mistake lowering the PIP? I had mine high, $250k and set as primary.

Secondly my windshield is cracked. Do you think Progressive will be suspicious if I file a claim for glass if I switch?

Calling to ask about my policy created a claim?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:48 PM PDT

I called Geico today to ask about about their rock chip repair policy for rock chips prior to when I purchase or insured the car. The guy on the phone asked me how much the rock chip was, then automatically created a claim and wouldn't undo it. I've been driving for 15 years and I get my first ever claim because I called to ask a question! Do I have any options to have this removed? Washington State.

    Lease Deductible?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:40 PM PDT

I am going to get a Subaru Legacy in a few months. I just turned 19, live in Virginia. So I decided on geico because in my area it is by far the cheapest, the only one within reason. So the only thing I am worried about is that I need the highest deductible, essentially state min, to be able to afford the insurance (age). I am a great driver and have been licensed since 16 and never have had any accidents. I was looking into Subaru leasing and under a pdf buried in their website, it said that you needed as follows: Bodily Injury $100,000 per person $300,000 per incident Property Damage $50,000 Collision, Fire, Theft and Comprehensive $500 Maximum Deductible I talked to a Subaru representative asking about insurance requirements and they just said I needed full coverage and GAP coverage(included in lease). So who do I believe? I don't want to be in the Subaru office and I get my insurance and they decline it. Will they even have a way to know my deductibles anyway?

How much auto insurance coverage should I get

I live in a no fault state (dont know what that means exactly). I know I dont need collision/comprehensive. I want the minimum coverage I need in case someone hits me and gets injured or injures me.
