Great Lakes COVID Warning Student Loans

Great Lakes COVID Warning Student Loans

    Great Lakes COVID Warning

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:52 AM PDT

Two of my loans are showing interest charges this month. I've messaged Great Lakes and am waiting to hear back but you might want to double check yours. I only noticed because I'm paying ahead and the $ amount went up since last month which makes no sense at 0%. There are also no billing statements available March forward so no way I can find to see if they've done this in previous months on these two loans either.

Found an uncashed student loan disbursement from 2018. What can I do?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:39 PM PDT

I cleaned out my desk and found a $2k check I received from a loan disbursement in 2018. The check was issued by my grad school. What can I do? I am sure that it is part of my federal loan amount.

    My loan servicer is FedLoans.

    Limit on student loan disbursements?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 06:40 PM PDT

Long story short I'm starting my masters degree this fall. The program has always been online. Despite that, I was offered $20,000 in loans. I accepted because I wasn't sure how much total I would need. I definitely wanted to be able to take the disbursement money and pay the rest of the program without needing to take more in loans. I registered for classes and it looks like I may be paying just under $1000 not sure if this will change in the future. Considering my loan amount would be $10,500 for the semester, I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a limit on the amount you can receive back in a refund. Clearly their estimated cost to attend is way off. As it is this would leave me with a $9000 refund disbursement.

I live in a very expensive area

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 09:26 PM PDT

Despite being a US citizen, I am not familiar with the educational system and need some help from you guys.

I received my bachelors degree from my home country (Iran) about 10 years ago and having a very hard time getting my transcripts. All I have is my certification of completion. What are my chances of finding a university that would accept my B.A as a base-ground without requiring the transcripts?

Now having said that, most of my friends have survived the costs of living in SF area only with the help of student loans. One of whom received 12k per semester and 7k for summer courses (M.S). All of which went directly to rent, gas and whatnot.

Additionally, I would like to know that in case of not being able to get my hands on my transcripts, and having to start from scratch (getting another Bachelors) am I still eligible for student loans to help me with housing, food, etc. If so, what channels I am looking at?

    Perkins Loan- ADVICE NEEDED

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:40 PM PDT

TL;DR: Perkins Loan servicer never contacted me about the loan/payments due. Now trying to deal with a company (UNISA Inc.)that seems kinda scammy. HELP

A little background: my first 2 years in college, I went to a rather expensive private college- about $36,000/ year. My first year( 2015/2016), I took out a Perkins loan. After the Spring semester of 2017, I left that school. I've been in contact with, and working with Great Lakes for most all of my federal loans. I assumed (stupid, I know) that ALL my loans were under this one company. I never heard anything from any other companies, or from the college, about this Perkins Loan.

Fast forward to this summer. I applied for FAFSA to go back to school (different college!) and was told that I can't get federal aid because I have a loan in default, and to contact that college to fix it. I call the college, they tell me my loan is being serviced by UNISA Inc and that I'll have to talk to them about it. I research this company and find nothing good, but I reach out. In then told that they've essentially sold my loan to a collection agency (Second Alliance) that also sounds sketchy, and that I'll have to deal with THEM to handle my loan. Any advice on how to deal with this situation??

How to get over feeling overwhelmed?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:40 PM PDT

I've got a mountain of student loan debt (about 2x my gross income) and I make decent money. I do anticipate that income increasing, but not by a whole lot at least in the next couple of years.

If I pay aggressively, I'll be debt free in 6 or 7 years. Honestly just thinking about doing this for another 7 years exhausts me and makes me feel so shameful. I know the time is going to pass regardless, but I can't imagine another 7 years of this stress. Any tips?

    Question: Student Loan Interest Rates

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 09:20 AM PDT

    Hi!

I know that with COVID and everything going on that different places are offering loans for extremely low interest rates. I have refinanced one of my loans with SOFI and have a 4.2% interest rate, but am working with another huge parent plus loan (we are talking over 100k) with a 7.9% interest rate. I checked with SOFI and I could get it closer to the 4.0-4.6% interest rate but I was wondering if anyone has had better luck somewhere else. Does it make sense to shop with banks to see if I can get a lower interest rate there? Or would it make sense to offer a chunk of money to just get it completely paid off?

Thank you for any and all advice!

    Negative Amortization and IBR calculator

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 06:05 PM PDT

Hello all! A little bit of background. I currently have about 306K in federal loans (yeah I was dumb but I'm trying to help myself). I'm in an IBR plan with payments about $800 a month. My loans are at 6% interest so I'm accruing about $1450 a month in interest. I'm trying to do some calculations so I know how much I need to try to save for the tax bomb. Does anybody know a good calculator for student loans that takes into account negative amortization situations. I would also appreciate any other advice you may have for those with very high debt loads. Also please no "just work hard and save so you can pay it off in a few years".

Is there any way to move my consolidated private loan back to federal?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 05:52 PM PDT

So I kind of got swindled when I refinanced my federal student loan and mistakenly consolidated it to a private loan (SoFi) and lost my federal status. I found out I'm applicable for partial student loan forgiveness but because it's now with a private vendor, they're telling me I'm not applicable.

Do I have ANY options to get my loan back to being a federal loan? This has really really hurt.....

    Which private loan to take?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:06 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Hope everyone is doing well! I just wanted to get some tips on which private loan to take. I applied for fafsa but unfortunately it won't be enough to cover all my tuition and cost of living since it is a second degree (ABSN program). I've been looking for the best private loan to take, so far I've looked into discover and earnest. I've heard a lot about discover but not earnest. I was wondering if any you guys have experience taking out a private loan with earnest and if so, how was your experience? I am more leaning towards earnest because it gives a no co-signer option. Thanks so much!

Need some advice on how to pay on my student loans

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:08 AM PDT

    Hello!

So, my brain is flooded with different formulas and ideas on how to pay off my loans...so, I'm looking for some insight. I owe $48,000 on two loans...one with $22,000 balance and 5.375% and another with a 26,000 balance and 5.375%. I consolidated these loans ages ago and they've gone from lender to lender. I am paying on a fixed repayment schedule with $375 a month payment and recently I'm wanting to pay an additional $100-$150 a month. I have good credit, and have been paying on these loans since 2007. I am in a clinical training program currently and make peanuts- about $4500 a year. My husband is the main earner for our family right now. It doesn't look like I will have much luck consolidating again at this time because of my income, and my husband rightfully doesn't want to cosign on a joint loan. I called up my student loan provider and they said I would have to specify if I wanted my monthly payments to be paid a certain way, as well as where I wanted the extra $100-$150 to go. I have no clue what the best method might be. Thoughts? Thanks

    Federal Perkins loan

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 07:42 AM PDT

The online account for my Federal Perkins loan is showing that I don't owe a payment until November. This is new. I didn't apply for any deferments or payment changes. Google search isn't revealing any new legislation. I like to try to be informed before I call, has this happened to anyone recently or is anyone aware of why this is happening?

    RISLA Refinancing

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 03:42 PM PDT

Anyone have experience refinancing private student loans through RISLA? Wanted to ask around a bit before I pull the trigger. They're the only company out of about 10 so far that will give me an offer due to poor debt to income ratio, but I've never heard of them before.

    Loan origination fees

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 03:26 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I took out a loan and realized I don't actually need ~$2000 so I was planning on returning it to my school. The money has already been disbursed and the school used it to pay my tuition and fees and issued me my refund.

Returning ~2000 would lower my total loan amount and so what happens to the difference in the origination fee? Shouldn't that be cancelled for the amount that I returned? An advisor in my schools financial aid office told me I will lose that money but I thought that within 120 days all fees and interest for that money would be cancelled? I'm very confused..

    Loan advice

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:46 PM PDT

Hi so I have financial aid and I've reach my limit on it to where I can pretty much only afford on class a term (I have government loans? I think it's called the unsub and subsidized ones) and that only covers one class a term. I have 27 more classes to finish my degree, should I consider taking out a personal loan to finish this? I really hate only taking one class a term but I guess since I'm jobless maybe that's a dumb idea. I have about 1200 possibly (? Still verifying how much my mom has saved from a trust fund or whatever it was called) so that's about one extra class I can take once plus a bit extra.

I'm just wondering if it's a terrible idea and I'm gonna be one of those stuck under mountains of loans people. I'm getting a computer science bachelors btw. I currently owe 5k i think according to cornerstone.

Any advice would be great my family never went to college much so I have little knowledge of how to handle this.

Using Subsidized loans to pay off unsubsidized loans?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:01 PM PDT

I tried looking around and haven't really found anything about people doing this, but for instance I have 3,500 in unsubsidized loans, but I was offered 3,500 in subsidized loans for the next coming term, would it be a smart idea to do this?

When you should or shouldn't take out US private loans

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:51 AM PDT

U.S. citizen here. I am considering studying a foreign language at a language institution in another country. I am curious to know what some people think the general rules are for when it is best to take out private loans. In my particular case, US federal loans would not work. Also, the cost of studying the language for roughly 6 months would be at the most 6k-8k. It depends on my living situation and everything obviously, but in essence, the country/s I want to go to are not really expensive - we're not talking UK price tag for school or cost of living.

Hi. Considering taking out my first loan of $500. How will this effect my credit?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 12:04 PM PDT

Im a 18 year old junior in college with a 714 and perfect payment history since I got a credit card on my birthday. I have 10% credit card utilization and just got a credit line increase. I was wondering if a $500 direct unsubsidized federal loan will impact me negatively? I plan to pay it off within 6 months of getting it to boost my credit types.

Need suggestions for best private loan!

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 07:49 AM PDT

Hey everyone. I don't want to take out a Parent PLUS loan this year just because application fee itself is crazy high. I only need to borrow like 8-9k and need advice on which private lender would be best for me with my parents co-signing. I have heard things left and right about Sallie Mae, Discover, etc and not necessarily good things so I was wondering if you guys could give me some insight. Thanks!
