Auto Insurance - Is $1MIL/$1MIL bodily injury liability excessive?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:08 PM PDT

For a 30-something graduate school student with no dependents, low income, and about $40k in assets do you think I'm over-insured with my car insurance?

I live in SoCal & don't have a daily commute. If I decrease my coverage from $1MIL/$1MIL to $500k/$1MIL, I'd only save about $9 per year. I guess I could drop it to $500k/$500k and save $16 per year. Thoughts?

    Current policy:

    • Bodily Injury Liability - $1MIL / $1MIL
    • Property Damage Liability - $50k
    • Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist - $300k/$300k
    • Medical Payments - $25k

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 01:03 AM PDT

Hi all, this is in Texas. I was walking my dog and she yanked me into a neighbor's side mirror and I broke it off. It's late so I just snapped a few pics and left a note with my name/number. Since I was in my car will my liability coverage still cover this?should I file a claim with my insurance? Never been in an accident before

    What are "Rate stability factors"?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 10:23 AM PDT

My motorcycle insurance is up for renewal with Progressive and the 12 month premium increased 30%. Nothing on my end has changed so I assume they're just increasing their own rates. The renewal offer shows a "Rate stability factor" that has changed in the following way from the previous year:

    Bodily Injury & Protection Damage: 0.831 -> 1.000

    Guest Passenger: 0.960 -> 1.000

    Comprehensive: 0.340 -> 0.452

    Collision: 0.600 -> 0.797

Are these numbers in-house computations based on risk? Or something else? Also would this be the cause of the rate increase?

edit: florida, not that its particularly related

I’m a first time car buyer looking to travel across the country from Philadelphia to Los Angeles. What do I need to do to get the proper insurance coverage for the move itself?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:51 PM PDT

At the end of July me and my girlfriend are planning to move from Philadelphia to Los Angeles. In order to do said move, we are looking into buying a used car (for the time). Ideally we would purchase the car here in Philadelphia or New Jersey (my girlfriends family is from NJ just 20minutes outside the city) and then use it to make the long trip.

Along with buying a car for the first time this will also be the first time we purchase our own insurance NOT via our parents plan. From my understanding your car needs to be registered in the state of your residency. Considering this interesting transition I was curious what would be the best way to handle getting insurance for the move? Any advice would be extremely helpful as we are quickly trying to learn about all the nuances that go into getting a car and insurance. Would also love to hear about your preferred auto insurance! Thanks so much in advance!

Can someone explain an umbrella policy?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 09:57 PM PDT

My mother in law has a rental property that she owns with her siblings (who we don't like or trust). Someone told her to get an umbrella policy. Can you explain what that is, what it does and when someone would need one?

What are my LEGAL obligations to subrogation demand letter from a law firm that representing my health insurance? CA

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 07:41 PM PDT

I was in a car accident 2 years ago. I hired a personal injury lawyer. I got treatments through THEIR doctors. The case has been filed and in process. I was supposed to have a deposition in March but due to COVID, it got delayed to August.

During Covid, my pain came back. I saw a doctor through my private insurance (work). I saw an orthopedic for consultation, I went to 10 physical therapy sessions and saw him once more for final consultation. In total my medical group only paid about $600 in total after my co-pays/discounted contract rates etc.

I received a letter from my medical group's insurance 4 weeks ago asking me to sign a paperwork to waive my HIPPA rights. I told my lawyer and they sent the law firm a letter saying I'm represented, further communication should be directed towards my lawyers, not myself.

Today, I got another letter again asking for the same thing. I called my medical group and told them, without admitting anything, I am represented and they should call my lawyers. I gave them the name of the firm and their contact info. I asked them to ask their lawyers to stop sending me letters.

Right now, it appears the lawyer is only asking me about my first initial consultation with the doctor. I'm guessing that's why they're asking me to waive my rights, so they could see what else they could get reimbursed.

I understand subrogation is legal but my questions:

    • Do I need to give them access to my medical/billing records? While they can always subpoena me, do I have a legal obligation to waive my HIPPA rights?

    • I only have to pay what they paid to the doctor/health provider, right? Not more?

    • is this civil or criminal? I haven't lied.. when I called my insurance earlier today to give them my lawyer's contact info, i was asked if I was an accident and I told them "I'm not answering that. Here's my lawyer's number, call them and stop sending me letters".

    Insurance not covering registered owner?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:21 PM PDT

Hey, so long story short, my dad sold me his vehicle (we signed the bill of sale), I got insurance, but haven't managed to actually register it due to having some tickets, so have been driving it with his plate.

Fast forward to next month and I get into accident with another driver. The insurance determined other drivers fault, however now he decided to personally sue me (and my dad since) for damages. My insurance said they might defend me, as the vehicle was insured under my policy, but definitely won't defend or represent my dad (registered owner at the time of accident)..

It was a relatively minor accident around a parking lot, with the other driver having a broken back bumper and us just exchanging information and going on our way, and now he is suing for an absurd amount for so called "personal injuries" for over 500000.. it is absolute insanity and just really don't know what to do.. Have spoken with a lawyer and he said my father would need his own representation going forward, and I would absolutely hate it to put him through this as he wasn't even the driver, and it is quite costly and frankly don't even know he can afford it..

We live in the same household and I was the only driver listed on the policy and have been driving the vehicle ever since, paying for everything and eventually registered under my name.

Can't the lawyer assigned to me from my insurance represent him as well? Or does he just file his own statement of defence and then sort of kick back while my insurance lawyer fights it? He didn't have insurance on it, since it was insured under my policy.

Really a messy situation and really can't even sleep over this..

Would appreciate some thoughts or feedback. Thank you.

Should I Leave My Insurance Co

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:05 PM PDT

My insurance company denied my claim for hail damage to my roof. I appealed so they sent another adjuster and my claim was denied again. I spoke with a claims manager who reviewed my claim and came to the same conclusion as the adjusters- claim denied.

Meanwhile, the home directly across the street to my left...different insurance company, claim approved. And the home directly across the street to my right....another insurance company, claim approved. But here's the real kick in the groin, I live in a duplex and my neighbor, the one I share a roof with, different insurance company, claim approved.

I'd be crazy not to switch insurance companies right?

Divorced, remarried. Forgot to remove ex from auto insurance policy

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 04:49 PM PDT

    Hello,

I got divorced maybe 7 years ago and I forgot to delete my ex-wife from the policy. I tried to do it online but it asked for paperwork and I completely forgot to send it in. Fast forward and I got remarried a couple years ago. My wife and I have been meaning to combine our policies but just haven't done it yet.

Can I just replace the spouse information with my new wife's info or do I need to drop my ex-wife as an insured and add my current wife as an insured?

Will the insurance company give me any grief for my mistake? Should I just cancel the policy all together and go to a new company?

Water damage to my car but it’s my fault

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:34 PM PDT

Just putting a feeler out here. Today I did a little light off roading in my subie and came across what I thought was a big mud puddle. It turns out it was about 3 feet of water and I got stuck. The subie took in a lot of water and a Good Samaritan eventually pulled me out. The wagon limped home with dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. I called my insurance and they were pretty comforting and said that this should be covered but I have my doubts once the adjuster comes and looks at it. What do you guys think?

    Incident during hail

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:09 PM PDT

Hey everyone and thanks in advance!

In April we had a pretty bad hail storm. I had just gotten in the car and left the parking lot as the hail started to fall. I ended up bumping into one of the parking spot signs and causes some damage due to the quick onslaught of hail. I was going under 5mph, but hit it right in the middle of the grill and caused a bit of damage.

Someone told me to call and just file the claim, as it may be covered due to the storm. Will this still be held against me as an accident?

    Thank you!

    Not sure what’s good

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:27 PM PDT

I'm a 19yr/o male good college student and recently got my license in early march. I work during school breaks so I bought a 2014 V6 Mustang. The lowest quote I've been given was $253/m for just liability from State Farm. Most other agencies I've looked at have rates so astronomical for just liability it's honestly insulting (i.e. $670/m from progressive).

Is $253/m for just liability a decent price considering my age group and, obviously, the stereotype behind Mustangs? No other discounts can be applied and I have the lowest insurance coverage possible.

    Thanks!

Edit: Live in NYC but go to school and have an apartment in Buffalo, so I set my insurance address to Buf since rates are lower.

I have two speeding tickets both are about two years old and I have an accident that is about a year old (I was at fault) what kind of payment I am looking at. I am a 23 year old male, I pay about $180 a month right now and I own the car I drive out right. This new car I am looking at is a 97 pickup and I would have a car payment.

Just curious. How could an insurance company earn money while it offers certain plans that have no waiting period and can be ended anytime?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 04:07 PM PDT

As the title described, if I pay for the plan for just 1 month and stop paying after finishing everything covered, how do they get profits?

Edit: Dental insurance in this case.

“Fee” column in dental claim form

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:15 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I'm having to file a dental claim myself, and on the form, there is a section where you list the treatments the claim is for. And next to it is a "Fee" column with a "Total Fee Actually Charged" field at the very bottom. Can anyone confirm if I am supposed to put the total amounts before insurance coverage, or only the amount the patient (myself) is responsible for after insurance? Thank you in advance!

    Dental insurance [ Medicaid]

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:00 PM PDT

I just got approved for Medicaid through Ohio and I received my cards today as well... I need to get a lot of dental work done,it says online Ohio covers EXTENSIVE dental work. Does that mean they would probably cover a lot of the work I need done? The only thing I can find that they won't cover is dental implants since that is cosmetic. Does anyone know how all this works?

Insurance Brokers and Agents: What are some tedious document processing tasks you wish could be automated?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:21 PM PDT

Please let me know if this isn't the right place to post.

My business partner and I are interested in document processing automation (so automating repetitive office tasks like manual data entry from pdfs into spreadsheets or other systems, downloading and renaming files, etc), and through conversations with friends understand that there's a lot of that happening in the insurance industry. Trying to get a sense of the specifics.

What are some annoying, manual tasks that you guys are doing currently for work that you wish could be automated?

Hi, I've been with Mercury ~10 years but after getting a new car, I've decided to start shopping around so I can move to a more reputable car insurance company.

I'm comfortable with $1000 deductible on collision & comprehensive. I've played around with the coverages Geico's site and will start looking for quotes with AAA and other providers once I have the amounts nailed down.
