Everytime I get a email notfication (the yellow message popping up), I get a cripping anxiety and panic attack. Could you do this REPORT regarding PPP that doesn't even exist anywhere on our system?? I always cringe at every opportunity that may expose my flaws as a person. I wish I can live in a pokemon world and just catch pokemon.

After 5 years, I'm finally done with Public

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:54 AM PDT

The day has finally come. After a year of attempts to switch to TS internally, I gave up trying and left to join my favorite client. The new role should be a good mix of accounting and FP&A and I'll be working with the CFO directly, whom I greatly respect. Best of all, he's given me the flexibility to pursue my part time MBA with all the flexibility I need, and his permission to explore business school recruiting options while working with him. Nothing better than being candid up front with an employer and working out customized roles/job perks.

To all of you still in public - do what's best for you, but don't stick around a month longer than after you have learned everything you want to. I learned an incredible amount through public, however it was mostly front-loaded. My last year in public was mostly spent earning a paycheck and getting through the first year of my MBA; I don't think I learned anything new or worked on any sort of project that would develop my resume any further in the past year.

To those of you still in school - I would still recommend starting in public, and particular auditing. Get your CPA, and see a variety of businesses, industries, sizes, management styles, etc. This will give you the time and opportunity to learn what you like and what you don't like and help you understand what you want later. I'm glad this is how I started and don't think I would have understood what I wanted at this point in my career had I not seen all of these options.

Top 100 CPA Firms Receiving PPP Funds

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 03:57 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

So I was bored this afternoon waiting for my 6/30 clients to give me stuff and decided I wanted to look through to see how much PPP Funds went to the 2020 AccountingToday Top 100 CPA firms.

It appears that some firms have multiple lines because they have multiple entities that applied for separate PPP loans. I didn't want to combine them because it was enough work as it is.

I may have missed some, but I think I found them all.

I'm also wondering how many of these firms that had above 500 people laid off people so they could be eligible for the PPP loans.

    Enjoy.

How can I be better at my job when I SUCK??

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:58 AM PDT

TLDR: I lack common sense, ask dumb af questions, and I try really really hard but because I do dumb shit or ask dumb questions it looks like I don't even put in effort to my work before asking for help...when in fact I am already trying my hardest at work...

I am a junior accountant, graduated maybe 2 years ago with a 3.55. This is my first accounting job and I'm beyond miserable. I worked as a clerk with basic data entry duties in an accounting department in my last job, but this is my first accounting position. I never liked accounting back in school, but I didn't really have much choice of options as I needed to stick close to home and it was the only half-way interesting major in the school (there wasn't even biology...)

I don't mind bank recs (they can be pretty interesting, especially company cards. I don't mind the repeated nature of AP and AR…) but it's the stupidly small other stuff that I keep getting yelled at for. I just ask stupidly dumb questions. "Does a payroll include the last day (pay date?)" "Where can I find this file? (I have already clicked every file in that folder)" "Can you tell me if this company has a merchant ID with this system?" "I don't understand how to set up [thing]" I started in January. I'm still asking dumb af questions. I doesn't help that instructions come vague and answers to questions leaves more questions in my head.

I'm just incredibly air headed and I'm fed up with myself. I tried checklists, being extra "present", I have actually put effort in looking up questions and going through past booked items to see how things ought to be booked (eg. Nobody taught me how to issue a CM using the system). This has helped cut down some dumb questions, but really not everything can be "Google-able" especially if it's ABOUT a company (what category does this go to) (who can I ask about this).

One time I had called in to inquire about an invoice because nobody in my client's office recalled ordering the thing. I was scolded afterwards by my manager when I came back unable to void the invoice because the item was "already delivered" and was told "I don't understand what is so hard. Just have them void it??" A lot of the feedback I receive goes along the lines of "You should've figured it out yourself" or "I don't understand the problem, it's not that hard!"

The other day I sent a payment list to a client (it's the same AP each time, pre-set). I told him twice that the greyed out items were on hold because those do not get paid (it's a temporary change so it didn't feel right to leave it off the list). Stupidly enough...all I probably had to do was move those 3 lines to the bottom of the excel list. It would remain on the tab, but wouldn't be included in the screenshot (they don't need the whole file, just the screenie for that chart). But I didn't think about that. I didn't think about creating a second heading called "temporarily on hold." Simple solutions just...don't ever come to me. Not unless pointed out. I'm so dumb that I honestly make more steps for myself or complicate things when very VERY simple solutions are RIGHT there. It's frustrating for others. It's frustrating for myself...

I would be better at my job if I wasn't so dumb. I lack common sense a lot…and common sense can't just be…fixed (can it?) A lot of times, you hear about lazy co-workers or coworkers who ask dumb questions who didn't bother to look up the answer. But the thing is, even if I do try to do it on my own or research, or look at older files...my questions are SO dumb I ALSO look like I'm one of those "did you even try?" people.

Any tips on starting a job hunt?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:33 PM PDT

4.5 years experience (2.5 years industry while in college, 2 years B4 post-grad) with CPA in-hand. I'm one of the unfortunate few who got on one of those super toxic teams everyone in the office avoids and I can't do another 100+ hour a week busy season with them, so I'm looking to get out. Sad, really. I'd probably stay if I could swap off this team, but I can't. I can deal with the 50+ hour weeks now and everyone being rude/pissed off all the time, so I'm not looking for an out ASAP. I do want one by EoY if possible. In short, I'm waiting for the right exit opp.

COVID is probably the worst time to be doing it since I want to go into either F500 FP&A or FDD (whichever bites first with an offer I like) and those have pretty much dried up. I would like to get out of accounting if possible or at least to an FP&A role that is hardly any accounting (<20%).

Any advice on how to get to job hunting besides LinkedIn? I've never really had to hunt before, so I'd appreciate any tips.

Also, does the size of the F500 really matter for long-term progression? Let's say I work for a $10b rev tech firm vs a FAANG, is it really going to mean anything when it comes to getting other jobs or nah? I ask since most people I know in F100 or higher jobs all basically either stayed B4 for 5+ years (3 audit, 2 TAS/FDD) or are lifers. Want to make sure I'm not locking myself out of jobs if I don't shoot for a larger company.

    Thanks!

**TL;DR: 4.5 years experience (2.5 industry, 2 B4) and CPA in-hand. Want to go into FP&A or FDD. Never had to job hunt before. Any advice on how to get a new gig before year-end?**

Public accountants... How are we going to recover from COVID-19 no raise/pay cut down the road? [Serious]

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 05:26 PM PDT

Checking out few compensation threads, I'm seeing a lot A1, 2, 3 and S1 kind of underpaid now due to COVID-19. I understand they're also cutting new hires pay too so I guess at least we're not making less than new hires. I highly doubt they're going to give us like a "double raise" next year because many of us didn't get any this year. Is the only way to get a fair wage is to bounce? Is it just going to be a standard lower wages from now?

    For myself,

I started mid last year @ RSM @ MCOL as fresh A1 audit @ $54k. It was fair wage but RSM implemented NO RAISE for non-promo this year due to COVID-19 and only 5% for any promo people. Now I'm going to into A2 as same $54k. When I get to S1, I doubt they'll all of a sudden give me a double raise... it's very discouraging. I don't want to be S1 barely above $60k if that.

I just want to go to work, without being shit on, do my work, and invest in my life that has nothing to do with my job/company.

I feel bad about having this lazy approach
