What a couple of years at a big 4 doesn't do to ya Posted: 30 Jul 2020 05:50 PM PDT
Posted: 30 Jul 2020 09:50 AM PDT I just had my first ever work related emotional breakdown. I just got into the field in 2019FEB, started my first full time position at Firm in 2019JUL. In March I got sent to work from home. I now am half-assing both work AND being a dad to my three young kids because I never have time. Which is fine except for this really high maintenance client I was just assigned. I've been getting 20 or 30 emails A DAY between her and the partner; they all have the same subject line, and they all have attachments with varying degrees of relevancy and they're all just called SCAN. There's not even any numbers, just SCAN. So the Partner calls this morning and just starts laying into me about my performance and my "communication issues" while my two younger kids are in the background being whiney and needy because they're 1 and 2, and I don't get a whole lot of help from Mom because she works so much (she's in healthcare so they've been asking her to take a lot of overtime). So I faked like I stubbed my toe and went and just cried in the car. I don't want to do it anymore. I always thought you guys were bullshitting about how fucked up and emotionally taxing it was, but now I get it. I haven't slept more than an hour or two since Saturday trying to get all this shit done, I'm surviving on Red Bull, cigarettes, and Concerta. I don't think I CAN do it anymore. Posted: 30 Jul 2020 07:23 PM PDT I've been in tax for 7 years and this season just feels impossible. I find myself working to the point where I get 3-4 hours of sleep M-F and attempt to make it up on Saturday. Anyone else sharing this experience? Or figure out a way to shake it? Feel like the motivation to work is just zapped by the fact there's no separation of home and work anymore. [link] [comments]

Just read my 3rd horror story in this sub and now I'm lowkey freaking out Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:47 PM PDT I start next Wednesday in audit and I'm nervous as shit. I understand it's a learning curve and it's a young person's job but I'm terrified that I wasted 4 years in school learning this and just regretting my career as soon as busy season comes. I just don't want to feel like I made the wrong choice. [link] [comments]
Easiest Path to Earn 6 Figures in Accounting? Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:32 AM PDT So, I'm sort of looking for some insight as well as advice... I see a lot of people on here saying they make 6 figures in Accounting with 4-6 years of experience, and sometimes never going through Big 4. Often times it seems like industry, and it sounds like they rarely work more than 40 hours per week. That has not been my experience, so first I wanted to ask, what the hell? Secondly, what do you do? For example, are you in industry? Also, Public company vs. Private Company? I feel like that's probably a huge distinction.... And how did you manage to get there, because I'm incredibly frustrated so I (31M, CPA) left Accounting last October to try out Sales to try to make more... My background: Licensed CPA - 2 years at Big 4 Audit... hated it for obvious reasons - 3 years doing Fund Accounting at a small Investment Administrator. Doing PE Accounting. Loved it. Small shop, good people, decent pay, but the hours got crazy once they tried to grow aggressively (which didn't work) and I got too invested... (Made up to ~$65K) - 1 year in Industry at a Public Company. Eh, ok. Very entry level stuff, so it was incredibly boring and I was overqualified. Felt like a small cog in a big wheel. Hated that. Heavy workload during 10Q's and 10K's. Between being overqualified and having NO interest in the minutia of the SEC reporting that Public Companies have to deal with, I transitioned to the Sales Department... (Made up to ~$75K with target annual bonus) - 9 months in Sales since last October. Doing Well and Enjoying it so far. There's basically no path for me to make 6 figures with this team until 2-3 years in AT LEAST, but it's great experience as an Account Executive. However, Sales is a GRIND. I am enjoying it, but 30+ calls a day, and emails can get exhausting and boring, especially when you're commission structure is delayed as hell, so you see no real reward for your work. That said, I'm considering going back to Accounting if I can't find a better Sales job next year... (Make ~75K). THAT SAID, I know I want to make 6 figures, don't want to work at a Public Company, want work/life balance, so what's the path of least resistance? PE Accounting? Going back to Industry but for a Private Company, where I can wear more hats, small team, and NOT Feel like a cog in a wheel? [link] [comments]

Has anyone called their employer out on their bs before Posted: 30 Jul 2020 04:35 PM PDT My employer blames corona virus for no raises/promotions this year but is also piling on more work. I've been burnt out since like 2018 now and I just feel like calling out this bs and tell them I'm having a difficult time reconciling these two things, but know it probably won't benefit me and could potentially get me shitlisted. I'm in somewhat of a position to be unemployed with 1+ years of emergency funds but I also hate the thought of looking for another job. I know I can stay working there and try to find another job but job hunting, even while employed, is absolutely atrocious for me. I guess it's not as bad as being unemployed and job hunting but it's still pretty bad for me. I've gotten so stressed and had anxiety from how badly I wanted some jobs that I interviewed for because they sounded so awesome and id be able to escape my terrible job..has anyone here ever just got so tired of the bs and stopped putting up with it? Would I be better off just getting out of this hell hole and figuring the rest out later? [link] [comments]
Career change AWAY from accounting? Posted: 30 Jul 2020 04:24 PM PDT Hi everyone, I was wondering who here has made a change away from accounting and which field you ended up in. I'm contemplating a change as I feel completely miserable in this field, like not wanting to wake up for work in the mornings. I'm hoping to get as much advice as I can before making any sort of decisions. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

(CAN) How difficult is the CFE? Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:43 PM PDT I am looking at a career switch to accounting via the UBC DAP, but I am terrified of not being able to find a CPA PEP accounting job afterwards, partly because of my lack of any social skills whatsoever. Furthermore, I am concerned about failing the CFE 3 times. I would not have any backup career, and would be completely and utterly fucked - I think all my perseverance would be lost even after failing one of the days the first time. I have below average intelligence and have looked over past threads detailing the CFE, and I think that I might not be able to pass even with lots of studying. Should I still pursue accounting (thereby UBC DAP), or a different program at BCIT for less risk? I've been very indecisive about this, and do not know what to do at all with my useless science degree. [link] [comments]

Questions to Ask a TAS (Transactions and Strategy) Associate as an Intern Posted: 30 Jul 2020 07:22 PM PDT Just started as an audit intern at a B4 so obviously my first move is to dump audit and start networking for a TAS gig, right? I got a new TAS associate to talk to me tomorrow, anybody got some good questions I can ask him? He's an audit senior who transferred to TAS if that helps [link] [comments]
