The reopening of Vegas this past week drew in more visitors than originally expected which has prompted MGM to reopen another hotel on June 11th and then continue to reopen more hotels on a biweekly basis.

Are support and resistance levels just an illusion that Technical Analysis tries to explain?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:27 AM PDT

If we believe the premise that stocks follow a random walk, then technical patterns can't define or predict stock movement. But rather, a stock moves first, and then a technical label is applied to it after its movement. If this is true, technical traders are basically Captain Hindsights.

I recently read about this and decided to perform an experiment using Excel and =RANDBETWEEN(0,1) to simulate flipping a coin. And then plotting the results on a graph. (This experiment was actually already done by Princeton and in the book A Random Walk Down Wall Street).

If heads, I'd plot the next point higher. If tails, I'd plot the next point lower.

My first 88 coin clips looked like this:

    https://imgur.com/gEANazL

Immediately, you can see what people might call a support level around -4. And that the coin is flipping "within a range" between -1 and -4.

I then filled down the formula as far as it could go using CTRL+D. It got to a little over a million.

My resulting chart turned out this way:

    https://imgur.com/l3S4Krp

This second chart displayed "support" and "resistance" levels much clearer. The first resistance area around the 200 mark. Support area around -300.

Between coin flips 400,000 and 700,000, you can see what a TA trader would call a perfect head and shoulders pattern.

Follow by more resistance a little below 200.

Technical Analysis' attempt to explain trading and stock movement using market psychology might, in reality, have a random walk element to it. And maybe it is this random walk that explains stock movement a lot better than TA does. If true, using TA might be a naive method if we see stocks moving independently of its previous move.

We do come to a problem point where a stock's price cannot go below 0, and that's where the Random Walk hypothesis fails. Does that mean that the next coin flip should be to the upside? I not 100% convinced it would.

However, with the TA movement, if every trader believed in it and bought stocks at an inflection point where the TA says to buy, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. But in that case, that would mean that stocks move based on the illusion of an inflection point, and in actuality, it's only the result of everyone buying in aggregate. Which means stocks can move at any price point if everyone bought at that price, and not necessarily have to wait for a candlestick to say so.

This might also help explain why there are so many newsletters and trading alert services trying to make money teaching this stuff, when they aren't successful in trading TA themselves.

The global pandemic has reshuffled the global economy and our society and life in general. I was curious which stocks you would choose for the next 10 years starting today?

I would start with Tesla, Square, and Illumina

    Do NOT buy Hertz (HTZ)

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:15 AM PDT

Ok I've seen a lot of posts on Hertz. Here's the thing. If you know my posts, I'm a huge proponent by saying a stock goes up when "there's more buyers than sellers." This is true and applies to a lot of stocks, so you can throw fundamentals, especially in the short term, all out of the window.

However, Hertz is different. Right now, it is indeed going up because there are more buyers than sellers, like with any stock that goes up short term, but the reason it is different is the bankruptcy is actually an event that will cause the stock to go to 0 or near 0 (if you are lucky) regardless of how many buyers or sellers there are.

Think of it like an option. An option's price, directly related to by its IV, is also controlled by buyers and sellers. However, if at expiration it is OTM, it's worth 0, no matter how many buyers there might be. That's because theta takes over and it goes to 0 at expiration.

This is like Hertz. Hertz has an event, when they officially finalize bankruptcy, that will wipe out all equity holders and you can treat this event as an "option expiration for an OTM option." So in this case, this stock will go to 0, so if you are buying now you are gonna be completely screwed. If you have Hertz, you should sell immediately next week.

Look at the Jan leap options. You'll notice that almost all of the OTM put options are worth similar to their strike price, so it's pretty much implying that it's going to 0 in the future. The 1 strike put didn't even decrease in value despite the stock going up like almost 100%. The bonds are still basically worth nothing. The only thing propping it up is supply and demand and that won't matter unlike the other stocks since there's an event that actually will cause the stock to go to 0.

Now, someone smart here will be like "yea but it can go up in the short term." Sure it can. But anything can. If you just wanna gamble like that, you should gamble in like an option on one of those highly volatile travel stocks in that case. Because that gamble is strictly more +EV than buying HTZ stock. You can get lucky and maybe get it right one random day, but on average buying HTZ stock is literally the most -EV thing on average you can do right now.

People absolutely should not be buying this stock and you should offload it if you are up on it early next week.

“Far more money has been lost by investors preparing for corrections, or trying to anticipate corrections, than has been lost in corrections themselves.” — Peter Lynch

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 07:24 PM PDT

This really sinks me in. This explains why most $$ missed the rally for the last 3 months. Either sold at the bottom, or dodged the bullet but never got back in. Now people are just chasing.

I mean "stonks only go up, right?" Just DCA US indices til the days you die if you don't need the money.

Sell DKNG puts, or buy the shares and sell covered calls?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:32 AM PDT

Been wanting to get in on owning DKNG for awhile but have been too scared of their valuation, so I had been buying calls on the way up. Price SEEMS to have stabilized now in the High $30's-low $40's. I am torn between buying shares on Monday and selling OTM covered calls or selling OTM puts with the hopes of eventually getting assigned the shares at a lower price. Fundamental analysis of this stock seems to be useless so I'm looking for the general sentiment, is DKNG gonna keep bleeding, or do we think the current price is as far as FOMO will let it fall?

What sources of data do you use to assess if a stock is overvalued, has good financial health and potential for growth?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:37 AM PDT

I am new to investing. I am quite risk-averse and so I am going for "buy and hold investments", especially those that pay good dividends.

What sources of data do you use to assess if a stock is overvalued, has good financial health and potential for growth? I've been using Simply Wall Street, but I've read that it's not that accurate.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks! Also, are financial health and potential for growth the best factors to focus on, or should I be looking at other things? Thanks!

Thank you to those in this community who recommended getting in on (VTIQ) weeks ago. It was awesome to learn how a merger works and see my shares of (VTIQ) get converted to (NKLA).

If you weed through the BS of people trying to predict whether the market or a particular stock is going to up, down or sideways.., there is actually some value in following this "stocks" community. Thank you

    Sleepy Joe Stocks

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:34 AM PDT

Now seems like a good time to ask:

Presidential elections tend to have a serious effect on the stock market, giving some a major boost while others fall hard.

What are some moves you see coming provided Joe Biden ends up winning ?

What is the time horizon of these picks? Will the moves occur as soon as the election results are out? Earlier, as outcomes become more obvious? Or only after some time provided certain legislations is passed?

    Thanks!

Is NKLA a market open sell on Monday?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:19 AM PDT

Personally where I'm at with NKLA is that right now... this is a hype stock. Personally there's nothing about this company that makes it worth 36 per share. I think people will eventually begin to forget about NKLA and it will drop at some point maybe to 18/20? Then I think if they get some real meat to their preorders, partnerships, etc. it could really be successful in the future.

Because of that I'm looking to sell what I have, however does anyone think the hype is gonna continue on this stock? I don't wanna miss out if it makes another hype/FOMO run.

Lagging Sectors Ready For Next Leg Up

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 01:39 PM PDT

The market has been moving pretty much as a whole with most stocks trading with very similar setups. For instance weekly trend changes, and some with large gaps above ready to fill.

The difference being some sectors are playing laggard. For instance this past week we saw Hospitality and Airlines starting to make their big moves up. Friday and perhaps going into Monday it looks like energy companies started to make their moves up. XOM, SU, ENB, OXY.

Not necessarily laggard but online gambling stocks had some great consolidation this past week as well, DKNG & GAN. PENN has the benefit of being part of both hospitality and online gambling so It also looks great. I expect huge upside this week for both with Sports slated to come back.

Does anyone have any recommendations for laggard sectors or stocks with catalysts coming up?

Why weren’t landlords paying the renter’s rent in ‘The Big Short’?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:40 PM PDT

Hi I know this is not the place to ask this question but there wasn't a 'The Big Short' subreddit to ask, I figured this was the best place to ask.

I was watching the movie today and I noticed one part, when Moses and Collins went to a neighborhood full of foreclosed houses, and they talk to one of the residents there. They stated that the landlord hasn't been paying the renter's rent forward.

May I know why this is, when no one knew about the housing market bubble ?

    Thank you

A $2 stock is NOT always cheaper than a $200 stock. Yet we see $2 stock going to $20 faster than a $200 stock going to $2000. What's the play?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:50 AM PDT

Is it only psychological, seeing a smaller number even if it is, in fact, expensive? I know this doesn't apply to all the shares out there but I've personally seen "cheaper" (in terms of $ value) shares fly faster than bigger $ value shares.
