Feeling like I'm being cut out, please help!!

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:17 PM PDT

I'm a senior in college with one semester left in the Fall. I am working on a team consisting of me (handling business) and an experienced designer (who is back in school). For the past six months I have been working on a project developing a product partnered with a prominent, and massive business in my area.

Originally, my partner and I were brought on the project with hopes we would be able to further it enough to take it to a large pitch competition and with $100,000 for further development. At this point, the business we are partnered with said we would then own all IP, and we would license from them. However, due to the Coronavirus, this pitch competition was canceled, and we were cleared to compete in 2021.

We are now at the beginning of the prototyping stage. As of today, we were in a meeting and it seems as though our "partner" has been doing some work behind our backs. We were notified that there are two companies they have contacted:

    - Company #1: Has not reached back to them. They seem uninterested and may not contact back about the project

    - Company #2: Is interested in the project, and brought to light a new market for our product

The reason I bring this up is because my partner and I have no signed deal that we will receive IP and this meeting sounded like whoever gives the best deal for the IP (us against the companies) will get it. I'm struggling to come up with a plan to position myself in a way where we will either get the IP or be able to partner with the company who takes it. Problem being, is we are students and are probably being looked at with little value.

I've thought of the following situations:

    1) If we wait, another company may snatch the IP

    2) If we don't think company #1 will be interested in the project, we can refuse to continue (if we believe company #2 won't purchase the IP at a $5,000-$10,000 value and run with it themselves – this is probable they won't as they want to tweak the project and we are still prototyping) unless and agreement is signed, then they could just bring on other students??

    3) We could go directly to company #2 and make a deal with them … but again we are being looked at with little value as we have no IP and are students

I have poured six months of my life bringing this idea into validation and working with my design partner to create something truly amazing! Now that promise has been shown I feel like we are being cut out. Please help!!!!

Resources for Startups in all stages?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:47 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can share a list of resources that describe anything and everything to do with various stages of Launching a startup. For example Ideation, validation, MVP, marking, and so on.

If this 'list' doesn't exist I'll work on curating a good list.

Update # 1 - I am beginning to gather all these links and info and creating a Notion reading board. Once complete or have a fair amount of entries I will share it.

Update # 2 - I have put this on Gumroad for those who prefer to be notified upon launch. At the moment I put an arbitrary release date of July 1st, but I plan on revising that date once completed. I committed to providing this resource for free and that is still the case. However, if anyone is willing to support the work that option is also available. Take a look at the link I think its already coming together nicely. If you have any comments or suggestions let me know.

Is it just me? Do you track your SaaS metrics in Google Sheets?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 11:23 PM PDT

I am fairly comfortable using Google Sheets for tracking the performance of my SaaS company. My business is small.

    • I sell tiny digital products online and get about 15 sales a day, so may be its easy for me.
    • I track sales, payments, products numbers from my database using a custom MySQL Addon for Google Sheets

Do other founders do this too? If not which tools do you use?

How do you become part of a start up if you’re not technical?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 12:11 PM PDT

My experience are business based, mostly finance, accounting, pricing, regulatory work, and a little sales. Is there any value i can bring?

How to I pitch that value and meet others in the same space I can work on building something with.

I'd like to contribute to building a startup I can meet with face to face while gaining experience but I don't know where to get in on the ground floor to meet founders. I'm in the right place (Silicone Valley) but I've yet to meet a single person in casual day to day stuff that was actively working on a small startup. Mostly, the sf Bay Area is filled with tech and sales workers at big companies.

Is there a place to go to meet the right people? I bring valuable skills to the table but not of the technical type.

Ranking well but needing ideas to pivot

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 10:38 PM PDT

So I've a slightly unusual problem...

I created a website to sell marketing services. It was kinda an experiment after loosing my job to prove to myself I'm not half bad. 6 months on, I'm ranking well for keywords like 'marketing consultant' and have plenty of enquiries.

Anyway, while this sounds like a good thing, during this period I became more interested in selling my own products than my services. I've earned others so much money I'd rather use my marketing skills now for myself instead of clients. And, not have my income dependent on the hours I work.

I could refer enquiries to subcontractors or an agency I trust, but at this stage I don't really have those relationships.

Do you think there are ways I can I leverage or pivot my site? I need to serve the search query and SME needs, but I want a more 'canned' product so to speak. Eg. Independent marketing assessment. Or I'd be more interested in a cut of the business in exchange for taking on a (vetted) client.

Or should I just can the whole site cos I've proved to myself I'm ok and that's all I really wanted? I can't sell it cos it's not a generic enough domain.

I thought about offering courses etc as a product but the internet is full of those and I just don't want to be another one of those type of people.

Sorry if this sounds like a odd situation. What do you think? I think I'm to close to it to see clearly right now and need to borrow you as a sounding board.

Useful infographic explaining the steps of funding from StartUp to IPO. Including the usual % the founder can expect to keep at each phase.

I am considering investing and getting involved in a Startup and I found this infographic really useful for a newbie such as myself. It's from 2013 so perhaps the amounts are no longer valid? I'd be super interested to hear people's points of view on this.

Thinking of switching my online store from Magento to Shopify or Woocommerce - Advice needed

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:13 AM PDT

    Hey,

I'm thinking of shifting my Magento 2.3 site over to Shopify or Woocommerce(hosted on Woocart). Wanted some advice considering my requirements and priorities on which one would be good or if I should continue with Magento.

    Site details:

    • Magento 2.3 hosted on AWS - 5 years old
    • Daily Traffic - 2000
    • Conversions - 1.5%

    Problems with Magento:

    • Too complicated to change or add new functionality for my staff which has no tech people.
    • Dont want to handle hosting myself
    • AWS is really expensive

    Priorities for new platform:

    1. Scale:

How scalable are these platforms compared to Magento? In 2 years, if we're looking at 10,000-20,000 visits per day, will these sites scale up easily to handle the demand or will there be some problems?

    1. SEO:

Are any of these 2 platforms significantly better or worse than Magento for SEO? How long will it take to recover my current levels of traffic after I shift?

    1. Are there any pitfalls in either platform I'm not thinking about yet?

    Thanks in advance.

Looking For Ideas On Cost Of A Project

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 08:06 PM PDT

I have someone I am helping out and he wants to build a directory type website and app which I will help with but then he wants have an infrastructure which will allow business service providers so home carers, mechanics to be able to sign up so when the end-user let's say has a flat tyre in the morning or many other different problems one can run into they can open the app (or website) and be able to have one of the business services sort the issue out fast.

Now, this is the issue as I have no issues with the website or the app but its the actual infostructure as it will need to be programmed as it will be a little like Uber where it can track the service when they are on their way and can direct message the service business.

What I want to know is how much would this kind of project cost getting the businesses on website and app and getting people to sign up is not that difficult but its the infostructure of having the app and website programmed to allow businesses to sign up and have their own backend and also for the customers to sign up and have their own backend but they both can link up a bit like how Uber connects people together and has tracking.

If anyone can give a very rough price of the costs of this or whether it would need funding etc anyone who can shine a light on this would be a great help as I am trying to gauge out the costs beforehand of the actual infostructure and programming side of this.

Guide for Founders setting up a Tech Hiring Process

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:01 AM PDT

I recently posted this article at Remote Crew but wanted to share a short and sweet version with my fellow redditors.

    • Be aware your first hires heavily influence your startup's culture.
    • Don't rely too much on CVs - if you can test job-related skills quickly that's better.
    • Follow a Structured Process:
    1. Sourcing: 12 Sourcing Strategies
    2. Phone Screen: Phone Screen Template
    3. Tech Assessment: Assessment Tools (HackerRank, Codility, CoderPad)
    4. Interview: Interview Template
    5. Offer: Focus on Job Fit, Team and Benefits

I want to start a TV Network, any tips on how to much it would cost to do this?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:35 AM PDT

I found a certain niche that doesn't yet have a channel for US television. I would get the rights to play movies, we wouldn't create any ourselves; at least to start. Any idea on cost for a TV Network that doesn't make any content? I've been doing my research and have found nothing helpful on costs for my situation because most articles talk about how much with creating your own content. Any tips are very appreciated!

Is there a list of accelerators that offer GCP/AWS/DO/Azure credits?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:32 AM PDT

I saw the spreadsheet with places to post your startup. Really cool list. Then I thought it would be cool to have something similar for accelerators.

Does anyone know of any spreadsheets or lists for this? Maybe we could put together a repo on Github or something. Or just create a collaborative google sheets. Any ideas?

Shares among founders. How does that work?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:21 AM PDT

Hey guys. I, with 2 others run a start-up which is a few months old. We get decent sales already.

Originally, I and two others started this. The third one left the startup early on. We onboarded another guy to replace his.

We haven't formed any terms between us yet.

I work the most ( I'm online Marketer). The second partner has invested the most and works moderately. The third guy doesn't work much and doesn't take initiatives. He does what we tell him to do. His investment is low as well.

How do we decide who owns how much? Wanted to decide this early on to avoid future conflicts.

Also, I'm the one who decides most of the thinks in the startup.

    Thanks.

    Non Tech friends pitching ideas.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:02 PM PDT

Hey guys. So it's pretty well known that I am an above average engineer within my circle, which includes a lot of non tech people. Often time people in Sales or Marketing or other business will come to me with an idea. Pretty solid ideas might I add and they will try to sell it to me. They want to be partners in business with me and want me to build out their ideas for them so they can sell it. Some of them are pretty good ideas might I add.

However I Could likely do all of this on my own. They want me to co found with them but I would be owning and doing all the work. They would just be selling it essentially. And I'm pretty sure they'd want founder status or CEO, owner etc..

How do you go about this? I would obviously be owning the product from start to finish. Until it hits market. And even then, it being in the tech space I would still be the main point of contact. I would create the MVP. I would design the product. I would create the actual product and get it to the world. They understand this is my area of expertise and I could do it if I took the time and put in effort to do it.

But that's the thing, I'm more inclined to pour my time and energy into something that I outright own. I'm not as willing to do these things for an idea someone pitched to me with little in depth detail, just set face level details. Because I would be taking it from 0-100 and they would sort of be riding the wave, even though it is technically "their" ideas. I would refine nearly all details.

How do you guys go about this? Anyone can pitch ideas. It doesn't take that much effort to come up with ideas and pitch it to a tech guy you know can get shit done.

    Right?

How should I be seeing this.

Can you recommend an outline of steps needed for early stages of a startup?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:27 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

Can someone here recommend to me a resource (article, guide, book, etc.) that outlines the step-by-step recommended journey for what to do at the very early stages of a startup?

    For example:
    1) Do a Lean Canvas
    2) Run experiments
    3) Build successive prototypes with the customer
    4) Figure out revenue model
    5) Figure out Go To market
    6) etc.

Any resource you know of that kind of covers the general steps? Thanks!

    Indiegogo Prelaunch Option?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:48 PM PDT

Does anyone know if Indiegogo still allows prelaunch sales/perk options? This is for when you launch your kickstarter through its prelaunch stage. I know I'm 2018 it was possible and they also have a webinar talking about prelaunch launch perks. However right now that doesn't seem to be possible. Cant find any resources explaining this either. Indiegogo also doesn't have anything about this change in their support. Wondering if anyone else knows about this or how to navigate this?

CRM/ERP for early stage startup to manage business

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 01:38 PM PDT

Our startup has been in business for a little over 18 months now, and we have received our first startup funding ($400k).

So far we've been managing everything in google drive but it's becoming unmanageable. We have document everywhere and we're at the point where we have quite a few supplier leads, we're in discussions with suppliers, we are having meetings and setting tasks but there's no easy way to manage it, and make sure things are getting done.

We are in the medtech/biotech space so typical software dev Agile platforms don't exactly match what we want. Over the last few days I've been trying what I thought might be a good option - Bitrix24 - in depth. I like a lot of what it does, but some things are just annoying. For example, I'd like to be able to easily attach a quote to a contact (for example a supplier) so that everyone in the team can see it. For some reason I can only set up a "deal" in one direction (us being the supplier and the contact being the purchaser) - but we aren't really at the sales point in the business yet.

Essential features: - contact management to keep track of our growing list of contacts - email integration (saving emails in the CRM so everyone in the team can see them) with GSuite - project management (even if it's just simple tasks and Kanban) - Linking to Google Drive docs would be nice (many "cloud CRMs" have 5gb file allowances. We already pay for google drive... - relatively easy to use (some of our team members while scientifically talented aren't entirely computer geniuses) a nice interface makes it a lot easier to sell to the team

Nice to haves: - some moderate accounting stuff (tracking sales for companies, making invoices, tracking costs?)

We don't want to be spending a fortune on this, $400k sounds like a lot, but it really isn't a huge amount in biotech. We will be going for Series A in 6-10 months, but we'd like to spend <$100/month total for 5 users.

Appreciate any insights anyone has. I'm trying to look around some of the CRMs and ERPs and they look like they're either stuck in the early 2000's or simply don't give a demo!

No code platform options for building a CRM

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:58 PM PDT

Are there any no code platforms that can be used to build out a CRM type software? As someone who is not technical I'm very curious if a "full stack" no code platform is worth it, or going after the individual no code pieces and piecing it all together. I've come across Adalo and it seems like it can do a lot, just not a CRM (I could be entirely wrong, though).

Is it a good idea to pursue a buildout myself this way or seek to outsource it for a custom build which likely will cost significantly more? I'm sure there are arguments for either direction but am definitely curious on what options are out there.

Any and all insight into options within no code platforms and arguments for or against would be greatly appreciated!

How do I get more clients?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 10:39 AM PDT

I've started a consulting firm and we got extremely lucky in obtaining our first two clients. But my question is how do I get more?

I know relying on contacts is a good idea, but I'm not exactly sure about going with the cold approach? Our marketable strengths are the testimonials/portfolio and the fact that we're also launching a soft "product" for clients with strengths in user experience, marketing, and scalability.

What do you folks use to quickly show your design ideas?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 10:21 AM PDT

Looking at various wireframe/prototype options. We've got about 6 or 8 different options for a product (e.g.), and we'd like to get them beyond paper, enough that an investor could look at it and 'get it', at least in a basic sense.

I know we want something really easy to learn, even if it means limited features.

I've looked at balsamiq, and it looks good. I think the lack of colour etc is actually really helpful from a true UI/UX perspective, but this is closer to an ad, I guess?

Ideally it'd be cheap to use, as well - free or a few bucks a month.

Does any one have a list that includes all expenses of a software startup ?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 10:08 AM PDT

I need a list that includes all expenses and their costs for a software startup, I have found the following expenses yet but I need the rest:

1 -Accountant and bookkeeping handling 2- lawers and contracts (e.g. founders contract) 3- brand 4- website and domain 5- intellectual proberty 6- marketing and advertising 7- software license for software development
8- servers hosting 9- employees 10- food and drink 11- equipment

So what is the rest ? The comprehensive list should give me a better insight into software startups and so Ill be able to estimate expenses better (if you can't list the costs it is ok, the expenses factors would be also enough)

    Thank you
