If I am struggling with Audit, is a career in Corporate Finance even an option? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:01 PM PDT I started Big 4 A&A around 1.5 yrs ago and am about to be promoted to Analyst. In spite of my efforts, I am a pretty poor auditor and constantly fuck up at this job. I am under performing relative to my cohort and feel like I am one negative feedback sesh from a PIP. The only reason I have made it this far is due to my good attitude, willingness to learn and the relationships I have with my team mates, but as far as my work is concerned it's mostly dogshit - I take too long on tasks and at times struggle to understand the accounting behind the testing without a thorough walk-through. Like many who go into Accounting I have always planned to exit into a high finance job - something to do with modelling, valuations, D&D. However, with my performance so far in Audit, i question whether I would even be able to handle the work in Finance. To me, Corporate Finance has always seemed far more technical than Audit, by which logic if i can't handle the technicality of Audit, how could I in finance. However, I have heard on occasion that Audit is actually more technical than a lot of these high finance roles due to the reliance on standards, but have also heard a user here saying that they could teach audit to a monkey - so I'm pretty naive when it comes to plotting audit on a barometer of difficulty. Anyway, just looking for some advise or confirmation if my concerns are justified. Cheers [link] [comments]

How do people keep transferring to the Netherlands w/out speaking Dutch in b4? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:23 PM PDT I constantly hear about b4 auditors internally transferring to the Netherlands. Even here in /r/Accounting there a lot of posts talking about it for different reasons. This makes me believe that there are quite a lot of people transferring especially to the Netherlands. What I don't understand is how do you work in the Netherlands without speaking Dutch. I mean ok, Amsterdam is an international business hub with a really high percentage of English speaking people but isn't the work itself mostly in Dutch? Why would a b4 firm want someone who can't speak Dutch? Can someone please explain how does that works? [link] [comments]
Which dental plan from kpmg is best for braces/invisalign? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:57 PM PDT I'm new to understanding how to decide between insurances. And can you get dental insurance and not get others insurance? [link] [comments]
[CAN] CFE Update - Sept 2020 is a go Posted: 29 Jun 2020 11:12 AM PDT Update below, what do you think? Bought a laptop with a keypad for these exams, not excited about using theirs. Dear Student, Following a comprehensive planning process, the profession is now able to announce the delivery approach for the September 2020 Common Final Examination (CFE). This plan to deliver the September 2020 CFE in-person recognizes physical distancing guidelines and addresses public health concerns. Delivery approach The plan is that CPA candidates will write the September 2020 CFE at multiple hotels across the country, in the usual cities where examination centres were held in the past. Each candidate will be assigned their own hotel room for the duration of their examination. Within each room, candidates will have access to their own washroom and writing desk. Candidates will be provided with CPA-issued laptops that will have Word, Excel, and Folio Views installed. The Surpass software will not be used on this CFE. During the examination, hotel room doors will remain open and the writing desks will be visible from the hallway. Candidates and their invigilator, as required, will be the only persons permitted to access the rooms. Personal protection equipment will be provided to each candidate and invigilator on each day of the CFE. Candidates will not be allowed to sleep in the rooms in which they write their examination but will have the option of booking another hotel room if they wish to stay at the same hotel. To maintain social distancing guidelines, we will stagger start times, as needed, to minimize the number of candidates entering and exiting the hotel at the same time. The arrival times will be provided to candidates in advance of the examination. Next steps Closer to the CFE dates, you will receive more details regarding logistics and other pertinent information. This information will include the comprehensive measures the profession plans to implement to mitigate the risks related to COVID-19. At that time, you will be asked to sign a waiver, acknowledging these health and safety risks. In the meantime, if you have any concerns or questions about the described approach, please contact us at Customer Service or review the regularly updated FAQs document on our website for valuable information that addresses candidates' questions and concerns related to the profession's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The profession remains committed to our candidates and their pursuit to attain the CPA designation. We wish you well in your studies and thank you for being patient and understanding. Any of y'all have experience doing tax work for high net worth individuals? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:14 PM PDT I'm helping out our tax side for a bit and got to see what company & individual returns I'm going to be working on and I'm weirdly excited. Some of the individuals are...incredibly wealthy, like in the billions according to Forbes/Wiki. I guess I'll get to see how accurate/inaccurate those estimates are. I'm also excited to see firsthand how a billionaire gets their taxes done - we all know how polarizing that subject is. Obviously I'll be doing some really low-level work but nevertheless it seems interesting to me. Any of you all felt the same way on similar returns? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:58 PM PDT I've heard the differences can be pretty big. Anyone here willing to share? I'm most interested in Kitchener/Waterloo Big 4. Even though I've looked on Glassdoor, it doesn't really indicate the manager level, and doesn't include reliable/enough data for certain cities. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jun 2020 09:26 PM PDT I am currently a staff accounting at a small CPA firm. I do not like it at all. I am currently studying for my CPA. And want to get out. I have around 1 year of experience, and was wondering what other possible careers could I do with this? I've literally considered everything, from being a cop (which I think would be cool but I've been arrested in the past), to just switching to corporate and just praying it's not as bad. Any recommendations would be nice! I would want something that pays similar to what I get now. Which is around $55,000... I do expect a raise in the next month or 2 to 58ish. [link] [comments]
[CAN] CPA PEP - Taxation Exam Discussion - June 29th, 2020 Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:56 PM PDT How did it go? I thought the first exam was pretty fair, was a little unsure on what to do with the rental property component in terms of mortgage and/or interest deductibility. Second exam I found pretty tough, wasn't sure what tax rates to use on the types of income, didn't how to minimize taxes on the sale of shares to his holding corp... Overall seemed like a fair exam overall though, nothing crazy thrown at us. Thoughts? [link] [comments]

[CAN] CRA auditor to B4 audit entry level...is that possible? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:53 PM PDT I am 27 and Canadian Cpa with almost 4 years work experience. I have been working for the CRA doing corporate audits for private corporations, review of tax plans...etc I've been thinking of trying to join an accounting firm and as an entry level auditor job and do that until senior and then move to something else that's accounting related. At some point, I would like to be a controller. For those who know or involved in recruiting. Is this move possible considering I already have my CPA and these jobs are mostly for university grads? Question on making manager at B4 Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:52 PM PDT What are chances of making manager at a B4 when consistently getting average year-end reviews? For context, going into my 4th yr at a B4 and was rated Average, highest rating, average the past three years. This past yr (S1), made conscious choice to coast when possible. All project reviews were very solid, but utilization and extracurriculars weren't great, which was on me. Don't mind the work and do well when on projects, but have little motivation to pursue internal initiatives/extracurriculars. Curious from past experiences if a good network and strong technical skills alone is enough to make manager after 5 yrs or if your really do have to buy in to all the other shit. Considering Big 4 Job but have no Accounting Knowledge/Experience (Many Questions) Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:46 PM PDT Hi guys, I'm a UK student who's just finished his 2nd year studying a Maths degree at LSE, with a 1st more or less guaranteed providing I don't fail my final year. Throughout uni I've been mostly looking at IB, but over the past few months I've had a drastic change of heart and am now considering accounting, with an eye on the Big 4. However I do have concerns over what my job prospects would look like, considering I have no formal accounting knowledge (maths student) and will most likely be unable to secure any accounting work experience before I start sending out applications. I'm intending on spending the next few weeks looking further into the different roles available so that I have a clear idea of what it is I want to apply for and why, but would that be enough or do I need to actually learn some accounting content? My initial thought was that tax sounded interesting, with the idea of meeting and advising clients on how to legally reduce their taxes being very appealing, but reading on here it sounds like it's just filling out a load of tax returns instead? Likewise, audit previously sounded like just checking other peoples work and making sure everything adds up, but on here you guys say it's superior with regards to exit ops so I really do need to learn more before I decide on anything. Any advice or a brief overview on the options available (so far all I know is tax vs audit) would be hugely appreciated. Another concern is taking accounting exams on top of a full-time job for 2-3 years, especially when some people have said you have to work 50-60 hour weeks during busy months. Do trainees get specific time off to learn their exam material? And roughly how much work time-wise needs to go into exams? Finally, what do the salary progressions look like for a graduate joining Big 4 straight out of uni? I've heard some people quote 6 figures after a few years, but surely you've only just qualified by that point? Is that perhaps referring to a few years after qualifying, or are those kind of figures realistic? Thanks in advance for reading all of this and any advice you can give will be immensely helpful!
