    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - May 05, 2020

    Posted: 05 May 2020 01:07 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

Unpopular Opinion: Keep buying stocks at prices you are comfortable with and stay with them.

    Posted: 05 May 2020 10:09 AM PDT

What I'm seeing is that people are panic buying and selling losing money to fees, and losing into their emotions. In order to combat this, think long-term, sure the stock price seems like it could be dropping or rising, if you made a decision to buy a stock, you should hold on to it.

No sense making a few bucks here and there. In Canada for example using TD Web Broker, it costs $9.99 per stock transaction. Let's say for DIS, you buy at $100, sell at $105 and re-buy at $108 are you really making anything worth staring at? Having an understanding of the business model and cash flow of a company is very important in making a decision. Do you see the company being in business for the next 1-5-10 years? If yes, just let it sit and let your money work for you.

Norwegian Cruise Line says there's 'substantial doubt' about its ability to continue as a going concern

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:45 AM PDT

Is anyone still shorting right now?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:02 AM PDT

There's just so much going on right now but markets still green for some reason.

We have liquidity but fundamentals still not there yet and we still have months ahead of us but it seems like we might reach an all time high again if this continues.

    Don't be an Emotional Investor

    Posted: 05 May 2020 06:05 AM PDT

It's become clear over the past several days and weeks that the majority of the Reddit community are emotional investors. More so now that we're in a volatile market. Luckily, you can become a smarter investor and see greater gains and fewer losses.

To become a better investor it's important to get your emotions in check. Emotional investing causes people to buy near market peaks and sell while the market is contracting. This is contrary to the old saying Buy low, Sell high. Remember, staying invested and diversified through short-term volatility is the key to long-term success.

When investing do your own research and due diligence. Don't follow the herd or follow water cooler talk. Look at a company's balance sheets, listen to conference calls, read some SEC filings...do research! Understand the nuances of a company and the industry they're in. Always have a goal in mind and don't be afraid to modify that goal as market conditions change.

If you're just getting into investing don't buy individual stocks without understanding how they're valued. The safest thing a new investor can do is to learn about dollar-cost averaging (DCA) and invest in mutual funds or my personal favorite, index ETFs (such as $VTI or $SPY). A mutual fund portfolio will not get you rich in the short-term, but consistent gains of 8-12% annually can result in millions of dollars come retirement age.

The best way to stop being an emotional investor is to educate yourself. Understand why the market moves the way that it moves. Read as many books as you can on investing and value investing specifically (e.g. The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham). Stop chasing those quick gains, unless you're educated and know how to properly assess the risks quickly and accurately. You can actively trade intelligently if you have a strategy and know how to keep your emotions in check. Hope and greed are traits of an emotional investor, don't let those words define you as an investor.

    $SHOP Shopify Perspective

    Posted: 05 May 2020 09:41 AM PDT

According to Tradeview: Shopify has a market cap of 80.936 billion and Amazon has a market cap of 1.163 trillion. By market cap, Amazon is 14.369 times bigger than Shopify.

Shopify's full year revenue was 1.578 billion and Amazon's full year revenue was 280.522 billion. By revenue, Amazon is 177.77 times bigger than Shopify.

Please take a second to read that again. Yes, Amazon's revenue is 177.77 times more than Shopify!!

Shopify's potential for growth is tremendous, but just in terms of valuation, Shopify's current price is already pricing in a ridiculous amount of growth. At the very least, I'd recommend trimming some profits, because ANY bad news or mediocre earnings in the near future will send this stock tumbling very far down.

Full disclosure, I'm long Shopify but have been trimming my position as it's been skyrocketing.

Google Sheet - Buffett Style Investigating Financial Statements

    Posted: 05 May 2020 01:10 PM PDT

After reading a few books, namely "Warren Buffet and the Interpretation of Financial Statements", I've created a Google Sheet that allows quicker calculation of various formulas that can evaluate a companies efficiency and possible growth. It can be found in the link provided. Type corresponding numbers in the bottom half of the Sheet and your formulas will populate in the top half. It's currently set up to analyze the past five years of data.

I personally like MarketWatch.com for Financial Statements, but there are other resources you can use. For a much better understanding of how to use the results of these calculations I would suggest reading the book. But you also can Google search around. I'll do a simple break down in the comments as well with what limited understanding I do have and hopefully other more experienced investors can chime in. Thanks

Anyone feel like SHOP is way overvalued?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 06:35 AM PDT

My short on SHOP is down 16% already because back then I thought it'd fall for sure. Or is SHOP just gonna keep defying bears' expectations?

    DHT Q1 Earnings Call

    Posted: 05 May 2020 02:27 PM PDT

What do you guys think? A solid dividend payout at $0.35 and revenue higher than expected. Personally I didn't expect Q1 earnings to be spectacular but I sure hope they capitalize in Q2.

    Posted: 05 May 2020 01:10 PM PDT

what % of stocks are held by them

are they a large enough presence to be able to manipulate the economy in their favor? any examples?

Stock Watch List May 5, 2020

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:36 AM PDT

Good Morning, Here's My Watch List

Gap Ups: ADVM, AKBA, AMD, BYND, CHGG, FANG, REGN, SGBX, TGTX, TREX, W, XPO

    Gap Downs: FIVN

SPY gapping up slightly after testing the 20 day moving average and giving bulls exactly what they want to see. Nice hold of short term support levels and room for price to move until the 200 dailly oving average which is at 300. Price action was good yesterday and there were quite a few of the Gap Down ORB setup's which I mentioned in the video last week. RCL, UAL, BA were some of the stocks that gave this setup yesterday. Business as usual for active day traders. Only trade the best setups with stop and targets calculated before entering trades will help keep emotions out of the equation and help to avoid big losses. Good luck trading today.

I am not holding any positions in any of the stocks listed above. This list is meant for the purposes of watching for opportunities to make intraday trades during the trading session.

Disney earnings report to release aftermarket today

    Posted: 05 May 2020 12:04 PM PDT

What are your thoughts on Disney after its earnings report is released today after the market closes? Their price has really fluctuated between $100 and $110 for the most part post-covid.

Those who have shares- buy and hold?

Those who don't- what price are you waiting for?

    I sold Etsy today

    Posted: 05 May 2020 07:50 AM PDT

$1 man here, made my largest gain yet by investing $10 in Etsy 2-4 weeks ago & selling it today for $13.80!! I also made $1.30 yesterday from selling GDX.

I saw both not going much higher, so I sold & unfollowed the companies to minimize FOMO. I read that Etsy's future estimated high was $78 & estimated low was $30. I figured $74 p/s was close enough, although I missed today's peak of $75 p/s.

Here's a pic of my trade history.

So I cashed out around $5 this week!!

Buffet says "Don't bet against America"... but what if I wanna

    Posted: 05 May 2020 02:41 PM PDT

Warren Buffet said not to bet against America because it would always grow and come out profitable but what if I don't believe that it will continue to have the economic dominance that it had in centuries past.

It seems like corona has shown the disfunction present in this country like never before. Our failing healthcare system based on insurance companies that charge too much but also provide inadequate service has led to a fervent pandemic. The political hacks floundering at this time and failing to get much done. The people themselves who have foregone their protection in order to protest lockdown.

There is something to be said about China, South Korea, New Zealand, Denmark, Canada and other countries that have been been able to close off their countries quickly, decisively and aim all their efforts into containing this problem successfully with a fraction of the number of cases.

    Am I wrong?

    $NAT is making me bleed

    Posted: 05 May 2020 08:29 AM PDT

I bought a lot of NAT shares around $6.35. but ever since, the price has been going down. Yes, I am the one responsible for all our losses with NAT!

Please convince me to hold because with each passing day, my will gets weaker seeing my portfolio get smaller and smaller.

Is FANG going to just keep going up from here?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 04:51 AM PDT

I don't think we are going to see these crash or go much lower. It's only going up. Is it a good assumption that a company like Facebook will only go up from here? Wondering if I should buy now or wait. I'm in for the long haul by the way.
