A quick note on subreddit rules

    Posted: 13 May 2020 09:15 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

With the growth of this sub we are seeing an influx of spam, self promotion and pump and dump posts. To be clear, going forward, people who do any of the following or anything similar to them will be immediately and permanently banned:

    • Promote your own YouTube channel/videos or your social media accounts (Twitter/Instagram/etc)
    • Share your Webull/Robinhood/Amazon/whatever referral or affiliate links
    • Promote your own Discord chat (or any chat for that matter)
    • Attempt to sell your trading course/service
    • Crosspost to/from your own sub to direct traffic to it
    • Post links to your own blog posts/websites/etc
    • Try to get people to follow your "hot trading alerts" and other such nonsense
    • Promote low volume/otc/pinksheet companies that could potentially be pump and dumps
    • Basically anything similar to any of these intended to exploit the growth of our sub for personal gain (and yes we know all the tricks)

We've added two new report reasons so you can report posts that violate these rules:

    • Self Promotion: This includes discord links (other than the official /r/StockMarket discord), subreddits (including crossposting to/from your own sub), personal websites, trading courses/services/chat rooms, youtube channels, social media, etc.

    • Possible Pump & Dump: Includes spammy/scammy posts (particularly promotional ones) about low-volume and OTC/pinksheet companies that may be intended to influence stock prices or manipulate the market

The intention here is not to censor the sub but rather to improve its content as a whole. If you see posts like the above, please report them as it really helps us out in keeping it under control.

We've also revamped the sidebar/about section a bit to reflect these rules, and updated various links over there. We'll be adding some additional automod rules soon too which will also help keep content under control.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE SUBMITTING HIGH QUALITY CONTENT: THANK YOU AND PLEASE KEEP DOING IT!!!

Thousands of Covid-19 ‘Heroes’ Are About to Get a Pay Cut

    Posted: 14 May 2020 01:28 PM PDT

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-14/companies-are-nixing-hazard-pay-for-covid-19-essential-workers

The planned cutbacks have rankled unions, employees and customers who are accusing companies of putting profits ahead of worker well-being. They also raise questions about how to value the essential workers who are keeping society functioning. Many continue to put their health and safety on the line in exchange for relatively low wages.

But the virus, which has infected more than 1 million Americans and killed over 80,000, remains, and workplaces are still potential hotspots.

Wanted to continue the original thread https://www.reddit.com/r/StockMarket/comments/gcgns0/airline_stocks_crash_monday/ about the Airline industry. Major hits for JETS ETF, DAL, BA (etc) last few days, and we are at new lows again today. How much lower do we go?

For 2 days the market actually felt like it should be

    Posted: 14 May 2020 04:56 PM PDT

How the news on media synced up

How Powell wasn't hopeful in his speech about the future and markets went down

How Jobless numbers came out and the initial response dumped

But here we are again, full force pumping markets and futures like nothing like this mattered

China is producing higher value goods — even as factories are shifting away from the mainland

    Posted: 14 May 2020 06:12 PM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/14/china-is-producing-higher-value-goods-even-as-factories-shifting-from-mainland.html

Chinese companies are developing and producing more higher valued goods, even as companies are moving production out of the country due its trade war with the U.S. and the coronavirus pandemic, an expert said on Thursday.

"We are actually seeing this movement from manufacturing in China to other locations, but also China then investing in technology," said Patrick Winter, Asia Pacific managing partner at Ernst and Young.

"We are seeing a lot of manufacturing now moving into other locations - toys and cameras are going to Mexico; personal computers, we're seeing those go offshore from mainland into Taiwan. Other manufacturing automotive manufacturing down into to Thailand, Vietnam, and India and so, we're seeing manufacturing move out of China," he said.

Even though some of these factory activities are moving out of the mainland, China is moving up the value chain through its huge investments in technology, artificial intelligence, robotics and blockchain - in turn developing and producing higher valued goods, Winter told CNBC's "Squawk Box." There are "a lot of investment into technology which would actually move China to a different spot within the supply chain," he added.

Even before the U.S. and China battled over trade for over a year, overhead costs of operating in China were rising due to increasing cost of wages.

Did I understand dividend stocks correctly?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 06:34 AM PDT

I am somewhat new to the stock market so please don't hate me for the newbie questions.

I always thought dividend stocks were BS, because why get 5%/year in dividends if the sp500 average is 7%/year.

But now that I'm thinking about, I think its better.

Here is my theory (please tell me if I'm right):

Lets say stock A costs $100 and pays $5 dividend.

Stock A goes down to $50, and it still pays the $5 dividend right? So basically you will get a 10% dividend yield stock.

I am currently looking at stocks like Exxon, which is currently at 8.30%.

If my theory is correct, that the best I can do, is find dividend stocks that are really really cheap at the moment.

I know that companies might choose not to pay dividends for a year or two but that's ok. My time horizon is 30 years.

P.S I know that buying individual stocks is riskier than buying an ETF, and for this reason I only want to invest 5%-10% of my portfolio in this.

What is your strategy of stop loss during this crisis ?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 04:04 PM PDT

Normally I put a "following order" of 5% = not sure of the name, it is a sell order who follow the up but when it go down a certain % it sell. And I sell when +15% BUT a stop loss during a such volatility just activated within a day... So in general solid stock but in short term what kind of stop loss do you put ?

Stock Watch List May 14, 2020

    Posted: 14 May 2020 05:42 AM PDT

Good morning, Here's my Watch List

Gap Ups: APDN, CODX, FUTU, IMUX, NNVC, NVO, RVLV, TVIX, WIX

ALLO was gapping to highs pre market but has dropped. Keep on watch if it decides to move higher after market opens

Gap Downs: BA, BABA, ONEM, RCL,

SPY trying to move lower, nearest support at 272 at the 2019 pivot and 50 day moving average. Big moves yesterday in Corona related stocks most of which are very overbought but in a volatile market extreme moves can happen. To last in this game your strategy must be consistent. I will not trade a stock long if it is extremely overbought and I will not short a stock that is extremely oversold even if it means missing a big move. The reason is because the odds of the trade working are low and I want the odds on my side, more often than not losses will occur. If you see stocks that do not fit your criteria, do not trade out of fomo, that is trading emotionally, trading statistics will make you money, trading emotionally will cause you to lose money. If the market continues to drop, I will look to catch a move in TVIX or UVXY. Patience is your friend when there are a lack of movers and when the market is finding direction. Good luck today.

Is earning call sabotage a common concern?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:20 PM PDT

The CODX earning call was bombarded by trolls and the share value is down $1.50 since the call was supposed to begin. Is this a common concern? Was this the result of an inexperienced company or uncommon sabotage?

Navigating the stock market. What are your plans?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 02:49 AM PDT

With such a fast decline and recovery. I can see another big drop coming in the next half year once things start to reopen and alot of businesses potentially going bankrupt. In a perfect world everything goes back to normal But I don't think this would happen so easily. Eventually we will go back to normal but nobody knows when that would be.

Curious to hear everyone's plans and strategy moving forward. Are you liquidating your stocks? Loading up on cash? Buying? Or holding?

Watchlist: 5/14 Powell, Wisconsin, and Bears

    Posted: 14 May 2020 04:08 AM PDT

    Market Notes:

Fed chairman Powell made remarks yesterday that prompted another day of selling. While he has largely been a cheerleader of the economy to date, yesterday he stated there are many things that are still "unknowable" when it comes to recovering and reopening. Markets like certainty.

The Wisconsin State Supreme Court has struck down the statewide stay-at-home order. Some cities and counties are putting their own in place. But this ruling is the first of it's kind. Worth monitoring for developments.

The bears appear to have a clear advantage going into the day. Futures are choppy. near flat, but leaning towards red.

    Watchlist:

CREX is a low float, watching for a setup above $5.50

GCAP is a low float, moving after a positive article, resistance at $6.70

ALT is a low float, earnings play, expect support at $4.45

ORGS is a low float on watch after some COVID-19 news

GNUS is a low float, watching for a setup above $1.40

GNSS is a lowish float, watching for a setup above $4.60

CMRX watching for a setup above $3.40

Machine Learning/News/Mock Trading - Website Beta

    Posted: 14 May 2020 01:58 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone!

My name is Joe Montaño and I would like to share a personal stock market tool turned website I've been developing for a couple years.

    StockHacks.jolomo.io

Don't worry the domain is temporary while in beta...

Our systems build machine learning models that predict future closing prices. These models (which are in their simplest form for now) use a combination of typical data you would expect and also considered many technical indicators.

Additionally we have some news headlines load for you to read to get an overview of the companies current events. Here soon we will also incorporate news sentiment analysis to the model building parameters.

The newest feature that is about ready is the mock trading system. So if your new to investing you can practice and track your hypothetical returns!

Anyways would love some feedback/testers to register and poke around. Things aren't perfect yet but that's where you come in!

    Thanks ahead of time,

    Joe

    Thoughts on Abbott Laboratories (ABT)?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 05:33 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I've been trying to get into the market a bit more with the Covid-19 situation going on. I did fortunately hit the dip and bought up a bunch of VOO which has been a nice investment. I've wanted to start creeping into some stocks.

Needless to say I feel as though I made a bit of a brash decision on Monday to buy up some of Abbott Laboratories (ABT) with the announcement that they were approved by the FDA for the emergency use of some of their new antibody testing.

The stock hasn't done as great as I had hoped it would over the last couple of days.

Am I being too short-sighted? Is this one to ride out? Do you think there is future potential with ABT, or should I just pull out with my small losses now and put in somewhere else?

Appreciate any thoughts out there on this one.

First time I worked at a place that offers Stock Options, i know the very basics but i have no point of reference for what is considered good conditions to compare? Any advice would be appreciated it.

    Posted: 14 May 2020 10:25 AM PDT

I have a basic understanding, the company offers options, after X years i can choose to sell those stock at the price at that time. Is that about right?

Problem is i have never worked at a place with this before so i have no point of reference as to what is good and what is a bad deal.

Is it always at a reduction of salary and in return you gain shares at a set value? What happens if employee leaves or is laid off before the vesting period. Is there a common standard for that or is it literally different at every employer.

What about vesting periods? can any one share any insight on their own just so i have something to compare to?

Airline OTM puts kept me even.

    Posted: 14 May 2020 10:49 AM PDT

What may work for me may work for you. During the next big upswing (if that happens) buy some LUV, DAL, SAVE, whatever long-ish puts on the cheap. I figure, if anything is gonna tank due to covid, it'll be those. Spend $500 to save your butt. Hopefully sell them for a couple bucks later on, or if this thing does tank, it'll give you some dough to buy back what you like. The benefit in buying calls and puts is, your gain is multiplied x2 or more, while your loss is always x1. This is terribly obvious to many but those airline puts kept me even this week and I wanted to share.

    Reliable source for "Shares float"

    Posted: 14 May 2020 03:32 AM PDT

    Hi,

What I have found till now?

    - Found the common yahoo finance site > Statistics tab which has "Shares Float"

    - Found Finviz which shows "Share float" as well for individual stocks

However, I noticed differences in quite a few stocks:

For example, today when I checked for a stock called CODX, I saw the below per site:

    Yahoo finance : Float 24.19M

    Finviz: Shs Float 20.80M

Does anyone know a which one is more reliable? Or any other reliable source for such data?

    Thanks

    Thoughts on HM?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:51 PM PDT

I work in a shopping mall in Europe and every day I look over at a an HM store. The mall has been open for 2 weeks now and every single day that HM store has been completely packed with customers. Before the mall opened and everything around here was closed for two months, I frequently visited my local post office and there was always a ton of HM packages there. Currently HM stock is super cheap at 123 SEK. If you look at a 5 year window, it's faced a downtrend but if you take a look starting January 2019, it's been going up steadily until the pandemic hit. Following the financial crisis in 2008, it rallied big time and doubled in value from 2008-2010. On April 3, HM reported that online sales in March 2020 increased by 17 percent and that digital sales channels remain open in 47 of the group's 51 online markets. Between 1 December 2019 – 29 February 2020, the H&M group's net sales increased by 8 percent.

Maybe people will buy cheap clothing again following the current crisis. What are your thoughts on HM?

Should I invest in airlines? UAL specifically. New to investing.

    Posted: 14 May 2020 10:59 AM PDT

I just setup my account and have been looking at stocks to invest in. I'm completely new and still learning a lot.

My thought is that if I buy low (UAL is at like 8.40 a share right now) and tough it out for the next few months, they are bound to rebound right? I mean its an airline company. When the world opens back up people will be booking like crazy and shares will go up and those who bought stocks at 8 a share will see profit, right?

Like I said I am so new to this so if my thought process is completely off, I would love to know.

    Thank you
