Is it worth buying Gold and/or Bond ETFs here? I am not sold on them as defensive allocations

Personally, prefer to either be in value or dividend ETFs. With rates so low, not really worth going long duration and introducing interest rate risk...the returns on buying the front-end of the curve are nearly zero. In terms of gold, just not there...sounds crazy, but I think I prefer to buy Bitcoin to simply buy gold.

How to make a great dividend portfolio?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 07:09 AM PDT

So what are some great tips to beginners on how to start and make a good dividend portfolio? What are some of your favorite stocks that have dividends? How did you build your own dividend? And how long did it take to make a decent profit every month?

    Just turned 18 year old

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:47 PM PDT

Hi all, I'm from the UK and I've just turned 18. I'm wondering you can help me. During this wonderful lockdown, I've not been getting paid much and have been getting brilliant lessons from my mum about investment and pensions and telling me not to impulse buy and to save save save.

I'm should be able to invest around £200 a month but I'm not sure what to invest into. I've got a trading 212 but I want something I can pay into for up to 10/15 years and withdraw to help me pay for a house

    Mini Options question

    Posted: 03 May 2020 06:38 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I've been trying to get into options now that I've put some research into them, but the heavy costs on the tickers that I'm comfortable making options trades on is discouraging. I read into mini options, but I am unable to find them on my brokers (I have accounts across multiple big-name brokers.) Am I missing something in regards to how to find them with the XXXX# format? Same with trying to find the XSP ticker on a few of them. Any help would be appreciated!

Annualized Return for AMZN for 10 years?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:30 AM PDT

Hi, I am struggling to find the annualized returns % for the stock AMZN over 10 years. The price was $137 on 05/03/2010 and it is $2270 on 05/03/2020. Is there an easy way to calculate the 10 year annualized return so I can compare it to ETFs ?

    Viacom

    Posted: 03 May 2020 05:43 AM PDT

Is viacom a good buy right now? I'm debating between VIAC SYY and DIS. Someone told me VIAC is on sale right now and it might be a good time to purchase. But I also have been interested in Disney for a while, and news just came out they will be opening their parks in limited capacity in around June I believe. Then finally there's SYY, which I think has a good chance of moving up with the opening of restaurants across the country. Any opinions?

Best place for stock market news?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 08:40 PM PDT

Is there a website where your watchlist of Stocks is updated with news and articles in real time? I feel like I'm always 10-20-30 minutes behind the news because I hear of it, and the stock is already shot up or shot down.

May 2020 Community Stock Picking Contest

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:57 AM PDT

    Hi r/StockMarket!

Just for the fun of it I have decided that I will run another community stock pick contest for this month.

You guys may recall that I ran this back in February of 2019.

It was fun for members of each community, but admittedly a bit time consuming to run.

Basically how this works is, instead of having all of you guys competing against each other on this subreddit, I thought we could change this up a bit and have you guys all go up against my other 2 stock communities that I also run.

Many of you may or may not know this, but I co-run the Stockaholics forum (link on the right sidebar here). I'm very active there, and put up a ton of content that you all see me putting up here on r/StockMarket. Additionally, I run our Discord live chat community (link also on the right sidebar here). So, basically this would be a 3 community stock picking challenge, instead of just 1.

I think this could not only be a fun monthly competition going up against another group of members of an entirely different community...but, more importantly, I think this could be an opportunity to potentially introduce new people from our Stockaholics and Discord communities here into r/StockMarket and vice versa.

That all being said, unfortunately due to the limited number of participants on our Stockaholics community, I'm having to cap members at a minimum of 7 per community so that we have the same amount of participants for each community. So, basically I'm only allowing the first 7 members who submit their picks to participate on this month's community challenge. Sorry about that!

Anyway, this community picking contest will be following the same rules as our other regular monthly stock picking contests.

    They are the following:

    • Use your Reddit username exactly as it is on r/StockMarket.
    • Pick 2 stocks (only with a minimum price of $2) that trades on the NYSE.
    • You cannot duplicate someone's exact pick!
    • Choose Long or Short for both picks.
    • 1 ETF allowed (no leveraged 2x, 3x ETFs/ETNs allowed!).
    • No indexes or pinks/OTC or IPO's allowed.
    • Give a rationale for both picks (OPTIONAL).
    • You may edit your picks at any time, but all edits need to be done by 9:30AM eastern time on Monday morning.

IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES YOU WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED INTO THIS COMPETITION!

I will be running a Google Form where you guys will be submitting your picks so I don't have to input them manually by hand.

(CLICK HERE TO SUBMIT YOU PICKS VIA THE GOOGLE FORM!)

Please follow the guidelines exactly as they are posted at the top of that Google Form!

If you guys find any bugs with this form please report them in here!

Using the Google Form requires you to be logged in with an account on Google. Simply create one (it's free). The reason I have everyone needing to have an account with Google to submit the form is so that we don't have duplicate entries in the spreadsheet. Only 1 entry per user is allowed!

Looking forward to seeing how this format goes in here for us this month. I think this will be a very fun experience for everyone participating.

Best of luck to all 3 of our communities in this second ever community monthly stock picking challenge! May the best community come out on top by month's end!

Oh, and almost forgot here is the spreadsheet link in here where all your responses from the Google Form will be going to.

(CLICK HERE FOR THE GOOGLE SHEET!)

Again, if you guys find any bugs or errors with any of these, please let me know pronto.

    Thanks.

I need help with understanding options trading?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 07:27 PM PDT

I understand it a decent amount but what I don't understand is selling options.

If I were to buy an 3$(x100), and the stock price jumps from 100-109 dollars, I would be sitting at 900$, so if I sell this option, do I still have a risk of losing everything if it continues to rise?Or can I just exercise the option to lock in the 900$? It's really confusing me with all the terminology.

Buffett on why he hasn't made any big investments: 'We don't see anything that attractive'

    Posted: 02 May 2020 09:35 PM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/02/buffett-on-why-he-hasnt-made-any-big-investments-we-dont-see-anything-that-attractive.html

"We have not done anything, because we don't see anything that attractive to do," said Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.

Berkshire had a record $137 billion in cash and equivalent instruments by the end of March, according to the company's latest 10-Q filing.

Berkshire shareholders have been waiting for Buffett to deploy some of that cash, particularly after the coronavirus sparked a massive drop in stock prices.

"We are willing to do something very big," he said. But at the moment, "we haven't seen anything that attractive."

Sell your Losers and Keep your winners?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 06:50 AM PDT

I am a beginner at trading and have only started within the last month or so, I have read in a couple places to sell your loosing stocks and don't wait for a rebound. I have a couple airline stocks that are already in the negative and I am sure they will only tank more on Monday. Do I sell and make up the loss elsewhere or sit it out ?

    Thanks 😊

Can someone explain why Whiting Petroleum Corp stock has gone up so much even though they are filing for bankruptcy?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 09:08 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!
Was reading up about this company Whiting Petroleum filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and it's stock price naturally plummeted to like 30+ cents, now all of a sudden people are buying the stock and its jumped up to 1.68 at one point before now settling at 1.24?

    Question:
Why would anyone buy a stock in a company which has declared itself bankrupt?
    What is the play here?
Wouldn't you essentially be buying a portion of the debt ?

I want to learn about stocks

    Posted: 03 May 2020 07:49 AM PDT

I'm 18 years old and because of lockdown I really want to learn more about stocks.

I've read articles and watched videos of the basic stuff already and yes I am aware that the stock market isn't actually a nice place to visit right now according to some people.

But I still want to learn. Where and how do I start and do you guys/gals have any opinions regarding this pandemic and its effect on the stock market a few months/years from now assuming that I want to start trading by then.
