Fedex is threatening to stop shipping for me due the volume of my shipments. Any recourse? Posted: 17 May 2020 02:51 PM PDT Hello, Recently I designed and began manufacturing a product that has exploded in demand due to the coronavirus. I went from shipping 15-20 boxes a week to over 500 boxes a day. The other day I got a phone call from Fedex corporate and was told that due to the quantities of product I am shipping they are going to cut off my account. They are claiming that the local distribution network can't handle the strain all of the additional boxes I am shipping. If they cut me off I would lose my only stream of revenue right now and would effectively be shut down and have to lay off over 15 people. What recourse do I have here or am I just SOL? Posted: 17 May 2020 06:36 AM PDT Wages, benefits and worker protections in the United States are abysmal compared to Western Europe. ALL workers in Germany: cannot be fired without documented cause, have 6 weeks of sick leave at full pay then 1 year at 70% pay, 21 days vacation, parental leave for moms & dads, full medical coverage, and cannot be bothered outside of work hours That's not even discussing their tenants rights, rent control, free education .. people have it pretty good over there. In the US on the otherhand .. the above benefits are unheard of, unless you work for Google, Apple or Facebook A lot of the people on this sub are acting like their workers are their slaves - that they can demand they return back to work. They're also complaining that low wage workers are making more on unemployment than previously before. For the first time, American workers have a sense of power and financial security that they didn't have prior. I for one hope this becomes a trend. America is basically a third word country for the poor. Bosses have all the power and can pay someone $8 an hour without a single benefit or any job security - do you honestly believe this is fair? Posted: 18 May 2020 05:10 AM PDT I signed loan documents Friday at 2pm. The portal now says 100% and congrats your funds will be deposited within 1 day of closing. I have not seen the funds in my account yet (I do not bank with US Bank). Does US Bank set you up an account with them or deposit into your bank account you provided during the application process? How long has it taken others to be funded after signing docs? [link] [comments] |

People Should Focus / Businesses Should Diversify Posted: 17 May 2020 08:43 PM PDT I'm looking for some feedback. I was the General Manager of a company before I launched my own. The previous company was really good at one thing and we did it very well. But when that one thing would have a slow season our whole company slowed down, it kinda felt like feast or famine. I convinced the owner to launch a new vertical that was related to our main line of work but had different business cycles and easier to predict. We diversified and it helped smooth out cash flow. I had the expertise needed to higher a new manager over the new endeavor and lead the team. I comprised of about 70% of the new sales, but we grew that vertical to about 70%of our primary focus. It felt like a win. Fast forward a couple of years and I left the company to start a new one. The company I launched had 3 verticals. Each one I had experience and expertise in leading. I also had a network of customers in each. However no one group of customers brought in enough business for me to focus solely on the one vertical. After 3 years I was scatter brained, and had a hard time describing exactly what my company did, and even a more difficult time deciding what system to focus on. We were weak in all 3 areas and didn't stand out in any. I had to focus to move forward. I cut off one of my verticals and kept 2 that were closely related. Right before the shut down I was in the process of rebranding and focusing even more narrow. I was going to 1 singular thing that we have become great at. Our business has grown and we have built systems for this one thing. Our rebrand was going live April 15th. Everything is finished and ready to go live and I am sitting on it. I have 4 employees and about 10-15 1099s. Everybody is kinda wondering why I haven't pulled the trigger. Why? Because I have received a couple of phone calls, for what could be, enough business to make up for all our losses in the vertical we were about to kill. In discussions with some other business owners they have told me diversification is the only way to survive down turns. But I have become a huge fan of focus. Yesterday I had an epiphany: People Should Focus / Businesses Should Diversify I'm not a one man show any more. We have a good reputation and people know the quality of work we provide. I need to focus as the owner on growth and building systems (at our stage). But my need to focus doesn't mean we can't serve a more diverse client base. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. Posted: 17 May 2020 04:41 PM PDT Sorry about the bad title. With everything going on in China I have started looking elsewhere to have my products created. Currently I spend around 500k-700k a year importing from China. The main products I sell do very well and it's something that I feel could be made fairly easily and there is no place in the USA currently making these. I'm a very technically savvy person but I have no idea where I would start with this. What I envision is spending around 50k on materials and machinery and having production mostly automated, I could then work on hiring people after that. What I can't wrap my mind around is, how do you know which machines you would need. I know what the machines would need to do, I just have no idea what they are called (ie. a machine that cuts certain material into shapes, a machine that prints on certain material, etc). I can't just ask my current manufacturers and I don't want to make a guess. Is there someone that you can go to for things like this where they work out exactly what you would need? Posted: 18 May 2020 02:59 AM PDT I'm doing some research towards purchasing an existing business using an SBA loan, and I'm a bit curious about how exactly you pay back the loan. Specifically, do you pay the SBA loan back out of your own pockets, or the businesses? As an example, here's some finances: Gross profit: $250,000 Net profit: $65,000/year In this instance, the SBA loan payment would be about $5,000/month. This is doable if the company profit is paying off the SBA loan. Heck, there's even a few hundred a month to put into business upgrades. However, if I instead draw the $65K as owner's compensation and then pay the loan, the federal taxes alone mean that I'd be making less than the monthly payment on the company. I'd have to hold a second job just to pay for the business! There's no way I'm understanding small business finances correctly. Could someone please guide me? [link] [comments] |

If I bring back employees at 75% hours can they still claim $600 CARES act check? Posted: 17 May 2020 09:45 PM PDT I own a small business in NJ. Is there a sweet spot where if I brought back my employees at a part time capacity that I would be able to use my loan (forgivable) and the employee could still claim the $600 CARES act unemployment check? I believe I'd have to have my employees hours be at 75% of pre-COVID Hours for the payroll to be forgiven. Would my employees still be eligible for state employment and $600 CARES ACT unemployment? How can I Leverage a Recent Interview in an Industry Leading Magazine? Posted: 17 May 2020 03:08 PM PDT I was recently interviewed about my small B2B business in an industry-leading magazine (my business provides cloud software services for operations management and scheduling in a sector of the utilities industry). My business is small - just me so far. I have one utility district customer now, and am in talks with several others. I feel like this interview is great and adds some legitimacy to my business, but what should I as a small business owner be doing to take advantage of this opportunity? Any recommendations will be welcomed. I'm pretty new to working on my business vs. working in my business. (also posted at /r/marketing) [link] [comments] |
What is the purpose of Content Marketing? Posted: 18 May 2020 12:50 AM PDT I recently read many articles regarding the role of content marketing is to generate sales. This is one of the myths of content marketing - if we create it, we will get sales. If you make sales generation the objective of your content, this will appear trivial and your voice will be untrue. Thus, you are seen as not caring about helping your audience and only caring about making money. The goal of your content marketing should be to build a relationship with your target and help them on their buying journey by giving them the tools to help them make smart decisions. Content marketing is really the art of communicating without selling. We all know that users are becoming very smart these days and do over 75% of their own research before contacting different agencies. This represents a huge opportunity for content marketing. Help your users do the research so they don't have to spend the time doing it. Being clear that the goal of your content marketing should be to build a relationship with your target and feed them in their buying journey by giving them the tools to help them make smart decisions, will open doors to add more value to the relationships you build and nurture. On a mission to feed healthy food to kids Posted: 17 May 2020 06:05 PM PDT Hi, everyone I have this business idea in my mind, and I would appreciate any feedback. I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I realised that we don't have any service which provides healthy lunch options for kids with busy parents. It is hard to feed healthy food such as vegetables to kids. My idea is to create a lunch box using eco-friendly bento box and deliver it to customers a night before, and then parents can repack food into kids everyday lunch box if they wish to. I will have a form which will help me know if the kid has any food allergies or any religious preference. To encourage kids to finish all the food, I will have a fun presentation to make food looks more exciting so, kids enjoy eating their food. Customers with a long term subscription will get some fun lunch box accessories which parents can use to pack their kid's lunch. [link] [comments] |
Which are the best effective marketplaces to list my services? Posted: 17 May 2020 11:54 PM PDT I am an infopreneur meaning I assist people to improve their skills by coaching, training, and mentoring. Things that I have done to ensure success
Failed here Business is helping people to solve their problems so my weapon of choice was Reddit itself where I could see a lot of people with problems. I messaged them for the last two days to know that they don't seem to need any service. I assume that its because people come to Reddit to vent their problems rather than buying something. Since, it is just two days of experimentation, I will try more and post the update for you here. Solution I want to know where I can list my services so that people who have buying intent would be able to see my offering. Since I am bootstrapping, I need websites which are free to list. Did I google? [link] [comments] |
Acquiring similar businesses without cash Posted: 17 May 2020 06:24 AM PDT I am in the process of acquiring a similar business to mine with a trailing revenue share. He will get a percentage of all revenue tied to accounts that he brought into the relationship for a specific number of years after the acquisition. I would like to replicate this with some of my other competitors and keep rolling it up until we have something big. The next one I am looking at is already presenting the first challenge. His revenue is not enough for him to make the same type of cash this other guy is so it is less appealing. Thinking about supplementing with a small salary and having him oversee part of operations. A few challenges I see with this model; Obviously, nobody likes to give up a percent of revenue. In reality, I am paying him the true value of his business and he is financing it and saving me from any upfront cash while also mitigating risk since accounts that leave are no longer commissioned. Too many chiefs. I am already seeing that with our existing staff, the new staff, and then looking at bringing in "leaders" through these acquisitions I am going to be a little top heavy. Curious if anyone else has done something similar. Love to hear your EXPERIENCE. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 May 2020 10:35 PM PDT My husband spent 4 years doing apartment maintenance (1 year of that as the maintenance manager), then spent 1 year doing framing, and became a carpenter's apprentice last year. He loves carpentry work and is really talented. He would eventually like to start his own carpentry business, and I want to support him as much as I can with this dream. We are clearly in no rush to officially start the business as he needs to gain more experience, but I was thinking about starting an instagram account with his business name (already picked out!) where we could post before/after pictures of his side jobs and the furniture he makes on his downtime. Family and family friends have sent some people his way for side jobs as well, but how else could we work on getting his name out there and really laying down the foundation for the business? Are there other steps we can take now? He also asked if I can help with running the business eventually since I went to school for economics and math, but there's a big difference between an econ degree and understanding how to run a business. What resources have you personally found to be very helpful with general business management? Thanks in advance for any advice/tips you can offer! [link] [comments] |
Did not include Schedule C in loan calculation Posted: 17 May 2020 07:28 AM PDT I applied and was funded through PayPal earlier this month. I'm a sole proprietor/single member LLC. I only calculated my payroll for employees, as I was not able to add in my schedule C yet. However, I do have the schedule C now. The 8 weeks have already started, and some of my staff are not back full time yet. Am I able to include the 8/52 from my schedule C in the forgiveness calculation? Thank you guys so much- this sub is what's gotten me through this entire process! [link] [comments] |

Second Credit Card Same Company Posted: 17 May 2020 05:01 PM PDT I currently have a biz credit card (pay off monthly) and am looking to do an expansion for my business. Would I be able to apply and get a different biz card thru the same company with 0% APR intro offer. Just trying to avoid using cash and interest on around 15-20k that I can pay off in under a year. I am aware that I could go with a different card brand. Currently have 2 cards with different companies and would rather keep it simple. [link] [comments] |
