    Navigating Tornado Claim in Tennessee

    Posted: 07 May 2020 05:07 PM PDT

We had significant damage to our house in the Easter Tornado (Chattanooga). Still working through everything. We had a guy (a storm restoration specialist) who stopped by trying to get to be our contractor. He mentioned something and I want to know if it's true. He said per TN law if any trade has more than 50% damage the insurance must pay to replace the whole thing. We currently have the adjuster saying they'll replace ~65% of our siding and then paint the house, so that's certainly interesting to me. Is the guy telling the truth?

Should I add my husband to my health insurance when adding child?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:59 AM PDT

He has insurance his work pays for as a benefit and would not get reimbursed if he cancels. I am adding our baby to my plan, and for $13 more per month I can add him. His employer said his insurance would be primary. No health issues. Is it worth it to add him?

Disability and long term care help

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:22 PM PDT

Family member of mine had a stroke earlier this year, and he's currently in a nursing facility getting therapy via his employer health insurance. We've been informed that likely his insurance will stop coverage soon for everyday therapy and care and no longer cover his stay at the facility, but we don't feel he's ready to come home yet.

I applied him for MAGI based Medicaid (aka Obamacare) and he was approved. He currently is receiving short term disability via his employer but his income has been low because there's been deductions from his paycheck to account for state paid medical leave (I live in WA state). I wasn't aware I had to even apply for this so he hasn't been receiving this portion, but I do believe benefit from the state for this is up to 12 weeks.

I learned that MAGI Medicaid plan he was approved for will help pay for his room and board at the nursing facility if his insurance stops coverage. This is huge and something I was stressing about because he's clearly not ready to go home and private pay at the facility is a crazy amount, something he wouldn't be able to afford.

I'm concerned now that if I continue his short term disability payments, that he will no longer qualify for for the MAGI based Medicaid that he was approved for since income based. Should I and can I stop his short term disability payments to ensure his coverage to stay in the facility longer until he's ready to go home? Would this impact his ability to get payments from long term disability later on?

Renters insurance, but without photos, receipts, and a spreadsheet of everything I own?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:51 AM PDT

Preferable, this would be catastrophic coverage only. If my apartment burns down or someone breaks in and steals everything, I'd need an insurance payout, but if my bicycle or laptop or dining room table is stolen, I'd just replace it out of pocket.

Does a policy product like this exist?

    • high deductible

    • covers only worst-case scenarios

    • no itemized inventories

    • sign the policy, pay the premiums, peace of mind

I am the "stupid" in "Keep it simple, stupid." I prefer life to be uncomplicated.

    Thanks

Minor Parking Lot Accident in Los Angeles

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:56 AM PDT

    Hello!

I was involved in a minor accident a few hours ago for the first time in my life and am in need of some advice/pointers.

Setting: A narrow, one way parking lot where the two parallel lanes of parking spots are shaped like a V.

Situation: I was backing up out of my spot and did not see a car behind me and ended up rearing ending a car. Being it my first accident, I immediately got out and apologized to the two people in the opposing car. They started taking pictures and asked for our insurance.

However, my mother was with me in the passenger seat and was upset that I quickly assumed all responsibility and brought to my attention their rear end should not have been facing our way and that their car was also parked in the middle of the lane, as opposed to in an actual parking spot. My mother also does not think our car was angled in the direction where the damage was done on the other car. Things started to get heated between my mother and the woman in the other vehicle because my mother vocalized that it was not 100% my fault.

They accused us of being uninsured given that I did not have my insurance papers on me and claiming my mother's license is fake, (probably due to the fact that we are people of color), so I gave them mine as well. They took pictures of our licenses, but refused to give us theirs. They also did not give us their insurance info. Funnily enough, they left the parking lot going the wrong way.

Looking back now, I wish we had called the police to file a police report, but being so taken aback by the yelling and negative tension, I froze and anxiety took over.

Notes/Questions: I do not have a camera installed in my car, and I do not think they had one installed either. I can ask the store I was parked near if they have security footage, but it is closed now. I don't think my mom has called insurance yet, but we also don't have their info. Will probably call tomorrow. We did not file a police report, is that something we should still do? My mom feels a bit regretful giving them our licenses, as it had our residential info. Is there something we should be worried about/protect ourselves from? And lastly, any advice or thoughts?

    Thank you so much.

Is there a way to get Certificate of Insurance for a single person?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 03:35 PM PDT

    Hi!

I'm moving soon but my condo building won't allow movers into the building and requires a Certificate of Insurance for me to move out large furniture. If I want to move out my furniture by myself, is there a way for me to get insurance that would cover that?

    Thanks!

(Virginia) I have insurance but got approved for Medicaid

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:58 PM PDT

My girlfriend tried to file for food stamps and Medicaid about a month ago because she doesn't have health insurance. I, on the other hand, do have health insurance through my dad who is a school teacher. We live together and she told me when she did the application she made sure to select that I already have insurance and she was only applying for herself.

Last night I checked the mail and had a letter from the city addressed to me, as well as a letter from the city addressed to her. Mine telling me that I'm approved and hers telling her i am but she's not.

I guess my main questions are

    A) is there any legal trouble i could get in for this? I'd assume not since it doesn't seem like a huge deal, but also if I CAN I want to change it before it gets to that

    B) should I just simply call my local SS office and cancel my medicaid?

Question on my girlfriend's health insurance under her parents. (Upstate New York)

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:42 PM PDT

Without getting into too much detail, she turned 18 a few days ago and her abusive parents kicked her out, and along with other things, are threatening to take her health insurance away. I know you can be covered under parents insurance until 26.. but if she doesn't live in the household does that even matter? Is there anything she can do? She needs to start counselling ASAP, and needs to be able to afford her prescription medication. If there's anything we can do to keep her insurance, or get new insurance, please inform me. Thank you

(MN) Employer never gave notification to enroll in plan until after deadline

    Posted: 07 May 2020 03:40 PM PDT

Hello. I apologize for any formatting issues as I am on mobile. Today (05/07) I recieved a letter in the mail saying I only had until last tuesday (05/05) to enroll in the health insurance plan at work. This obvisouly makes me ineligible to enroll in the health insurance plan offered at my job. I spoke to my manager about at the beginning of my employment in how I would enroll in the health insurance plan, but he assured me that a member of the benefits team would reach out when I was eligible. He did not provide what the eligibility was, I was assuming after I worked X days i would have been contacted. This has caused issues, as I was planning to use my health insurance in the upcoming months for some health related appointments. Now I am unable to do so until the next year, putting my health at risk. Is there anything I can do about this notice? I have reached out to the benefits department, but have yet to hear a response as it is after hours.

    Off Road Coverage

Unfair outcome to a rear-end collision that was not my fault...

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:59 PM PDT

I was attempting to make a right turn, but there was a pedestrian in the crosswalk. I yielded, stopped to wait, turn signal on. I was then rear ended.

At the scene, the other person apologized and claimed responsibility. Later in traffic court they plead guilty for failing to avoid an accident.

I'm dealing with their half-rate insurance to cover my damage. They're claiming I slammed on my brakes and didn't use my turn signal and trying to minimize their payout. All lies.

They're totaling the car, keeping the salvage value and leaving me with the car to deal with on my own. Can they do that??

NADA, KBB, etc. values my car at $8500. The cost of repairs come in at $7800. Their insurance is only offering $4400 as a final offer. I need to fix the car.

This all seems totally ridiculous to me.

If I sign their release to get the $4400 am I unable to go to small claims court to recoup any other losses? Any advice in general is welcome!

    I'm in Illinois.

    Thanks for any help!

    Expectation of repair

    Posted: 07 May 2020 06:22 PM PDT

(Indiana) A young driver ran through a decorative brick wall at our church a few months ago and left a big knocked down hole of bricks. We've been back and forth with her insurance on repairs. They told us to get estimates, which we have. They finally agreed to a contractor, but are now claiming they are going to reduce the payout between 15-30% because the church is over 100 years old; so the value of the wall is "depreciated"

I mean, maybe so. But we aren't asking for a new one. We're asking for it to be repaired. Don't they have to make us whole again? We just want it repaired; not be on the hook for 15-30% of a charge we weren't responsible for in the first place

Is this just hardball? Or is this a reality of auto insurance and we need to eat the cost and then directly go after the remainder from the original party?

A question about business insurance and responsibilities for things

    Posted: 07 May 2020 06:01 PM PDT

I own a business and have both a general business insurance and what I thought I had cancelled /requested to be cancelled last summer was our worker's compensation because we didn't have an employee after April 2019.

Finally fixed a statement mailing issue with the agent's office and started receiving paper statements again only to realize our premium did not go up. They never cancelled our WC. I have a dated email sent to my agent giving the amount for 2019 total payroll of the employee YTD.

I was never provided an on boarding packet, no information about how to change the policy or anything. I do not even have any information on how to change which bank account my payment is drawn from beyond calling his secretary.

Is this normal? I went from a bad agent who wouldn't return my call or direct me to where I could find my coverage for a covered event (tornadoes) to this. Am I asking too much?

From what I can figure out is I've at least overpaid by 650.00 in the last policy period and possibly more given the employee was not active at all during the 2nd quarter last year.

Availability of Joint Term Life Insurance (California)

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:44 PM PDT

My wife and I are in the market for term life insurance and joint life (first to die) appeals to our situation.

I'm having one hell of a time finding any insurance company that offers joint term life. There are a lot of articles about joint term on the internet but funny enough the companies with the blog posts or articles about joint term don't offer it any longer.

Please let me know of any companies offer this for California residents.

    Roof repair

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:15 PM PDT

Our roof has hail damage from some recent storms, and we have reached out to a contractor and our insurance agent. They have been in contact with each other and our claim was approved to go forward with a certain dollar amount.

Our contractor has not given me an estimate yet, but would like to see our claim.

Am I wrong in thinking that if I show them how much we're approved for will make that the estimated cost? The other possibility is that our insurance adjuster came to the replacement cost from the information our contractor gave them.

Any insight into what's going on?

    Located in Indiana.

Car Insurance evaluating my Car base a sub type model.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:38 PM PDT

I was recently got in to an accident. I was hit from behind by another person while I was stop at a light. This happens in Canada in Ontario.

Then I filed a claim to my insurance. They then gave me an offer that is compared to a base model vehicles, and has no other features. My Car was fully loaded. Some of the comparisons has even a manual transmission.

I asked them why this was the evaluation which I find shady.

They are now then asking me for paperwork which I don't have. They are asking for the bill of sale. Do I have to provide this? Should I just hire a lawyer or will my settlement be less since the longer I wait the lower the value of my vehicle.

I just want to be able to buy a similar car with the same features and I don't want to under settle and get a base model.

    Insurance adjustments

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:33 PM PDT

FLORIDA: We had an insurance adjustor come to check in our roof after he was soliciting and he put in a claim to our insurance company. The basic contract says pretty much we are responsible for the deductible and the costs of the roof. There is a cancellation section that says we would have to pay 15% of the total cost of the roof in case we decide not to let them change the roof. That section required initials which we didn't put in.

Now, question is. Our insurance company, sent a check along with their estimate, the opposite of what the adjustor and us, expected.

When we contacted the adjustor for the estimate, they said they don't have that info because that comes from the insurance company.

    Is this how it works?

Then if i cancel how would they know how much the 15%is?

It doesn't sound right...but I don't want to judge if i don't know. Can anyone shed some light into this process please!!!

Scraped the doors against garage wall

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:20 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have a 10 year old Camry (KBB: 6-7k) with less than 60K miles. I unfortunately scraped my right side car doors in the parking garage at work yesterday. Very few spots were available and in trying to avoid the car parked next to this empty spot (and the one parked at 90 degrees), I scraped both the doors quite badly against the wall while turning. There are white scuff marks on both the doors and a dent also :( Looks quite bad and I would ideally like to get this fixed. I went to a local body shop (with great Yelp reviews) in the morning and the person looked at it and immediately said that the doors will need to be replaced which would cost upwards of 2K. I went to a second body shop and he told me something similar. I am now wondering what to do. I currently have Geico insurance (since June last year). I haven't made any claims with them. I do have collision coverage with a $500 deductible. If I report this to them, what will be the consequences ? I am in CA / SF Bay Area. Looking for some inputs. Thanks!

(TX) - Is this Homeowner's insurance quote a good deal?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm shopping around for homeowner's insurance and I found one from Nationwide. I live in Dallas, TX.

We live in a 2 story home with no basement.

For $2278 a year, they are offering:

    Dwelling - $383,719

    Other structures - $38,372

$287,789 personal property (with $2500 deductible)

Personal liability + personal injury liability - $300k

Medical payments to others - $5k

    $2500 deductible and 1% for wind/hail

$25k water backup limited with $2500 deductible

$10k service line with $500 deductible

Loss of use - actual loss sustained

"Inflation protection" + property replacement cost

According to Zillow, my house is worth around $410k or so. My current homeowner insurance has the dwelling at $455,000.

Is there anything I should increase/add on? Is the $25k water backup too much coverage or too little?

Is the $25k identity theft coverage worth it? It saves like $4 a month.

Is Nationwide a good company? I was looking at https://www.opic.texas.gov/policy-comparison-results

and it was saying they only offer an HO One plan? I heard I wanted to get at least an HO-3 plan.
