Identity thief / previous employee opened BoA account under my business name

    Posted: 14 May 2020 11:05 AM PDT

I got a random call one day that someone was trying to cash a $2000 payroll check at a little check cashing place. I said, no that's impossible and that I only do direct deposit. They sent me a photo of the document which turned out to be a legitimate payroll check with my business information on it. This was issued from BoA. I called the bank and was inquiring about why I would have an account with them and that I never opened the account. They hesitated and proceeded to transfer me to a check fraud department where they started an investigation. I am furious, I have been waiting on an EIDL grant that I applied for on March 30, the payroll check amount would fall in line with what I put on the short application of two employees, me and my partner, everyone else is 1099. I fear that the SBA found this account and just sent money to it even though I put my business account info on the app. I havent received any info regarding the EIDL to date, except a generic email. Why the fuck would BoA authorize opening a business account, wouldn't they need proper identification and documents? Looking for advice

Waiting on Relief Funding That Might Never Come...Decided To Get Creative: Free Cello Music Offering Below!

    Posted: 14 May 2020 09:56 PM PDT

Who I Am: I'd just started my own creative production services LLC in Feb right before the pandemic shuttered all my venues and bookings. (I'm a trained professional classical cellist). To give you an idea of my usual clientele, last year I played backup for opera star Andrea Bocelli.

What Is Offered: If anyone would like a brief recording (30 seconds or less) of my cello playing to use for your business, I will send it to you in exchange for positive PR - you must publicly name me and my company as the artist for the clip and leave me a positive review on my website. That's it, no gimmick! Let me know if you're interested in PM or comment below.

What Is Not Offered: If you're going to use my recording to sell in a song or other media for future profit - it would need to be paid for, since that's part of my business service offerings already. We can mutually negotiate a fee that is reasonable and fair. I accept Venmo, PayPal and Square.

Thanks for your time and best wishes to everyone with their businesses!

    Paper bag business.[NO MANUFACTURING]

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:23 AM PDT

    Hey,

I'm from India and there has recently been a plastic ban so all the retails shops are not allowed to use plastic shopping bags. This has created a new demand for paper bags. As far as i have seen, most of the well renowned brand are using very low quality paper bags with not so appealing designs. I was thinking of starting a small business that makes custom designed paper bags for retail outlets.
This idea has been on my mind for the past six months, but i have been having trouble coming up with a proper business plan.
Would be great if anybody could help or give and ideas.
    Thank you! :)

    Managing Payroll S-Corp

    Posted: 14 May 2020 08:57 AM PDT

My brother and I have an S-Corp where we are both partners, the company consists of just us. When we first started, within this year, we were advised by an accountant to start an S-Corp but he's kind of left us high and dry in terms of how to operate it. We have a business bank account and have been splitting profit equally and keeping 25% of it in the business account for taxes and transferring our share to our personal accounts.

We now plan to 1099 some work as business has picked up. What is the best way for us to pay ourselves and contractors so ensure we are all doing this legit?

Property Owners - Seeking Information to Expand Property Lines

    Posted: 14 May 2020 05:51 PM PDT

My original intention was to simply repave my driveway and parking lot. My driveway, however, is just wide enough for my Ram 1500 to fit through with a bit of space. This means I can't use my rear loading dock because trucks like FedEx etc don't have the room to go through. This causes trouble not only due to large shipments but because I don't have parking for customers. To make matters worse, every now and then a police officer decides to make it her duty to ticket all my customers/employees when they are forced to park on the street corner.

Today I had another contractor come in to give me an estimate to repave my lot and driveway. He explained the entrance of the driveway is the city's responsibility as its all broken up and it has a manhole cover next to it. So I need to contact them to fix that. Then the portion further up is my responsibility and I need to use concrete for it as its part of the sidewalk. Other than that he gave me a price for the asphalt/concrete for the rest of the property.

Once that was settled, I explained my problem with the driveway. he then told me that the cement side (a small wall about waist high) of the driveway that separates my property from the neighboring train tracks is being pushed by the trees on the other side. This cement wall is actually mine. Its definitely on my property and its breaking apart and being pushed further into my driveway because of trees. These trees likely belong to the train track owner (i believe he said ConRail or something). He claimed that that train company once simply gave the property to their neighbor, his client, because they prefer to do so in order to maintain the property for them.

As it stands, the buffer between my property and the train's is full of garbage, leaves, small trees, and basically a hill of dirt. The fence is all beat to shit and has massive holes in it. I dont know if the fence is mine or not. I dont know if my property is before the fence or after but I know that people could sneak in through it and they likely do. Ive just discovered one of my company vehicles had its catalytic converter cut off so the thief could make a few dollars. So this needs to be resolved.

The contractor explained to me that my property line is definitely wide enough to expand my driveway. We looked at a phase 1 inspection I had done before COVID hit and it looks like my property really does extend at least 2 feet if not up to 6 or 10. The problem is Im not familiar with surveying land and Im now waiting on a realtor to get back to me about an official survey to establish my property lines.

The reason Im posting about this is that I think it might be worth investing in widening my driveway. The contractor explained that the land likely will just be "given" to me because it's just a buffer with no value to anyone. He explained that they do this so long as I maintain the property which I will obviously do by leveling the mound of dirt that leads up to the train track. I would take down all the trees, flatten the buffer zone, and create a parking lot out of the area which would greatly benefit my business.

How likely is this to pan out? Obviously I have to establish property lines first, but who is the best person to call when it comes to:

    1. The City fixing the driveway entrance and manhole area

    2. The train company -NJ Transit runs through there.

I posted on here before but I was continuously interrupted and it may have come off as incoherent. So I hope this cleaned up everything. Im looking for advise for anyone who went through anything similar and possible tips going forward.

My Grocery Delivery business was just asked to co-op with a local Super Market. Looking for advice

    Posted: 14 May 2020 05:26 PM PDT

As the title says my small personal shopping/ delivery service was asked if we would co-op with a local Super Market.

My small business is the only grocery delivery in my town of 25,000. I had a brief conversation with the store manager earlier this afternoon and we will have a more formal discussion tomorrow morning.

For some background, I have only been doing this side business for a couple weeks in between my other 2 jobs and has had middling success. Maybe 1 or 2 customers a day (that's all I've had time for) mostly just relatives and friends of relatives.

This all changed after i made a Facebook page promoting my service 2 days ago... Since then it's been shared well over a hundred times and I have been getting many messages (mostly questions on fees and the like)

Since my business is so new and I really don't know it's potential, I have no idea what to expect from this business call tomorrow. There is another grocery store in town that some customers prefer over the one I'm talking with tomorrow.

I guess I'm looking to see if anyone here has been in a similar situation or if anyone could offer advice.

    Fire employees and start fresh?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 12:37 PM PDT

I've got a technical repair business in Brooklyn, NY. We closed down for two weeks following the COVID shutdowns, but I started going back to the shop to continue work after that. I told my employees to stay home and have been paying them a part time wage in the meantime.

Miraculously, we have still been getting a ton of work. So much that I can't keep up. This, mind you, while many long-established businesses have had to shut down for good. I feel exceptionally fortunate.

It will soon be 2 months since the city has been on "pause", and I really want to call my crew back and put them--SAFELY-- to work. We operate in a way that they would not have any contact with the public.

But they don't want to come back until the city officially ends the pause.

While I understand the health risk, I have a business to run, and we have received almost nothing from the PPP and absolutely zero from the EIDL, so I have been doing all the work in order to stay afloat.

I am at the point where I feel like closing the business down and firing the employees is starting to look like the right move. I'm not made of money, and I'm running my shop all by myself anyway. Might as well just go solo.

    right?

Creating an app for my business?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 07:01 PM PDT

Our escape room has a small coffee/ice cream bar. I would like to expand this into a larger operation within our lobby, and I have looked into creating an app for purchases. I'd also like to include gift card/ticket purchases in the app.

Has anyone had good luck with plug-and-play type app creators? Or do you suggest hiring someone to code an app from scratch? It doesn't need to be too involved, mostly just a place to make purchases.

I just started researching this, so I am open to any suggestions! TIA

Landlord wants to Come by for A Property Assessment - Should I Be Worried?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 03:01 PM PDT

I haven't heard from my landlord in a long time - we usually only communicate like once a year, if that. Usually I just work with his maintenance guy if I need anything fixed. But out of the blue I got a call today saying he wants to come by next week to do a property assessment. My first thought is that he's going to sell the building. He'd never tell me (he's very secretive) but if he does sell the building, and I'm in the middle of a lease, can I still be kicked out?

How to boost your organic visibility without spending money to an agency

    Posted: 14 May 2020 10:31 PM PDT

    Hey, there /r/smallbusiness ,

I have been going through the subreddit for a while now and a lot of the questions were related to how you can improve your organic standing or how you can improve leads coming in from Google, Bing, etc.

I have created a small infographic with some SEO details that an SMB can do without hiring a dev, an agency, or an SEO specialist. The majority of the tasks are easily applicable to anyone with very limited knowledge. If you have a website and you know how to enter the CMS or do some basic editing you are able to optimize your website using the guide in the infographic.

Hopefully, it will prove helpful enough to kickstart your organic visibility.

    PPP Loan Forgiveness Estimator

    Posted: 14 May 2020 09:16 AM PDT

Hey all, long time reader, first time poster.

I modified David Worrell's PPP Loan Forgiveness Calculator spreadsheet collection to make a single-sheet estimator tool for how your PPP process will go for companies WITH employees. (This does not work for Sole Prop companies)

This form is up-to-date as of SBA Guidance 5/13/2020.

To download an editable version of the form, in the Google Sheets set of menus, go to File > Download > Microsoft Excel. For best results, we recommend re-uploading it to your own Google Drive to edit the document (It's known to not work properly with Apple Numbers, which strips out all the functions and makes it a dumb document)

As with all general estimation tools, this system is only as smart as the math you put into it. Check your work, and have an accountant/CFO or even your Bookkeeper check your work and make sure there aren't any errors or special situations. Please use this as a discussion tool with your accounting advisors, not an exact plan. No one has final-final-FINAL-final-ReallySuperFinal guidance from the SBA yet, so it's all just an estimate until that happens.

And I kept David's contact info in here in case you want to get in touch with him about the formulas of how the form is designed. I am not a financial professional, but he is. I hope this doesn't break any rules about advertising. I just think he should get credit for the work that he did.

Hope this helps someone out there!

Credit Card Processors for Blue Collar Business

    Posted: 14 May 2020 05:18 PM PDT

Hey fellow small biz people -

We started a blue collar business (welding) at the beginning of the year. We are just now getting our first customer (horray!) who wants to use a CC (technically 2nd customer but the 1st paid with check).

Anyway, at this point, it's more of a side business, but it is a registered LLC and hope to make it full time soon. So there aren't many transactions going on, and since it's welding, the transactions will typically be $200+/per.

What would be the best processor for our situation? Strip, PayPal, Square, Wave...?

Any suggestions on articles to best present the online "invoice" to a customer would be helpful too. Would you just email the link? Or do you include it as a clickable link on a PDF of the invoice (or both)?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    1. Balance Sheet
    2. P&L
    3. Unit Economics
    4. Credit Card
    5. Bank
    6. eCommerce platform
