Kudos to businesses that are fighting COVID-19 and trying their best to retain employees and help customers. Found one inspirational note by this hair system manufacturer. They are sending free face masks to their customers and also doing tons of things to grow in the post-COVID world.

Just got promoted to COO, have first meeting with outside rep on Wednesday. Advice please

    Posted: 11 May 2020 05:04 PM PDT

Title say it mostly. My first meeting with an outside rep is Wednesday. My team are in talks about joining his (larger) company and I was asked to evaluate the decision. I am feeling pretty prepared on the numbers but I am unsure on the etiquettes. Is it okay if I ask direct questions about other teams numbers/stats at the new place, or am I suppose to ask leading questions hoping to glean the info indirectly? Any advice is appreciated, please delete if this is not the right to post this.

I just started at a company, and I want to properly map everyone's skills and expertise so we can work better together as a team. Any advice?

    Posted: 12 May 2020 12:37 AM PDT

    Hello,

This january I started at a research company (about 60 employees). There is a mixture of people who have been here 20+ years and those that came in the last few years. The ones who has been here the longest have established working relationships inside and outside the organization, meaning it can be hard for someone new to break in. I also find it difficult to know exactly what everyone can do, and this limits our ability to properly market ourselves and apply for collaborative applications.

    • I'm looking for advice on how I, or by advice to my leader, can map everyone's skills so it's easier to know if the competence for an application or project is available. Are there tools can create something similar to a "mindmap" but instead showing clusters of people with the same skill, the connection between them (e.g. person A knows Skill 1, and also Skill 2. Person B knows Skill 2)? Does something like this exist?

    • I'm also looking for advice on how I can suggest this be implemented without coming off as the "new guy with the crazy ideas" :-)

Helping ideas needed in business during this pandemic.

    Posted: 11 May 2020 06:56 PM PDT

Hey redditors, i am from india and run a water treatment business of selling and servicing of water purifiers.

But due to this pandemic and almost 2 month lockdown i suffered huge losses and after partial opening i don't see any income mostly people don't want to take an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) which was our main source of earning since they think about the uncertainty of the future. What should i do to overcome this situation ? Or some other ideas that could help me though ?

Since we use UV lamps i thought of making some UV sterilizer at home to sell but my father says it won't be feasible and would only return in a loss.

Please help me if you could.

What would you do if your employee did this?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 07:37 AM PDT

Me and my brother own and operate a small/medium business, and we had decided that all office staff would get a 3% increase this year.

Our accountant prepared the salary sheet for our payroll person to enter the info into the pay system.

All the salaries match up with the correct increase amount, except the accountant, she tacked on an extra 0.11$ an hour to her own salary without checking with us.

It was not a mistake, when the payroll person asked her about it she replied to get it approved by my brother. When confronted this morning she says that she was sure he would see it, and that she felt she deserved the extra increase.

Now that's just an impact of a couple hundred bucks a year, but by principle, isn't she technically trying to steal from us? Scares the hell out of me having someone capable of pulling a stunt like this in charge of our finances.

What do you think reddit? is it attempted theft? would you fire her? She's definitely not getting the extra 0.11$ that's for sure!

    Outside Perspective

    Posted: 11 May 2020 01:55 PM PDT

First time poster here and could really use some outside perspective.

Backstory: My brother and I are in a position to buy the family company. Company model is a distributor with a few extra things being sold on the side. I would like an outside perspective as this is all new to me and I may be over/under thinking things.

    1. They have yet to talk to our manufacturer about selling their business to us. This worries me as the manufacturer had recently talked about getting rid of their distributors. Those talks have gone away, but the relationship between us and the manufacturer is not as good as it once was. I'm also concerned that the manufacturer could say we didn't agree to this, we are no longer selling to you. Is this a common occurrence with manufacturer/distributor relationships?
    2. They don't want to get their business valued. Only they know it's "true" worth and are convinced it will value higher than what they are selling it for. They are selling it to us for a "great price" because they say their retirement is dependent upon us succeeding and don't want to put us into a hole financially. Example figures are that they are asking 1 million, but know it will value at 3 million. Personally I wouldn't want to leave that 2 million on the table. They tell us that if they charged us that much that we would never see a good return on investment. This worries me as I'm not sure I would buy any company without them having been valued first. Is this a normal occurrence?
    3. They are still in debt after thirty years of being open. They are able to pay all their bills, but they use lump sum money to pay for inventory. They said they were fully capable of paying the debt off but keep it around as it's "just good business". They then will point at companies that are multi-million dollar companies and use them as an example as to why debt is good. The way they also explained it was that they use their loans to maintain their salaries. So instead of using whats left to pay off debt or put aside for future payments they pay themselves out and keep the debt rolling. They are an S-corp. So they only pay taxes on the money once. Is this truly best practice? or does paying off the debt and getting the company to become self-sustaining make more sense? They've expressed the ability to be able to pay this debt off right now, they just wouldn't be able to keep their pay outs.
    4. Our accountant is one of the family members. He's the only one who really knows what goes on with their books. there is no one really checking his numbers or keeping an eye on him. He's also primarily the one who says that having debt is just good business.

These are just a few of my concerns and could really us some outside perspective on this. Any information or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Edit 1: Grammar and better readability.
