Title. Obviously I don't want to blatantly lie but if there's any other way of getting the most for the items lost, I'd appreciate the help.

My New Motorcycle Insurer Listed the Wrong Model. Can I Still Legally Drive?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:29 PM PDT

    Hi /r/Insurance,

    I live in Michigan.

I just left Allstate to stick with my old insurance representative. She'd joined a new company after our local Allstate branch closed down. As such, she had all of my vehicle information on file, plus access to my old policy. Consequently, I didn't read through her quotes with a fine-toothed comb--I assumed she knew what she was doing.

Today, she sent me my new proof of insurance certificate. I noticed almost immediately that the model was incorrect. I own a Suzuki DL650, whereas the certificate says I own a Suzuki DR650SE.

My insurer doesn't open until Monday, and I doubt they're going to check their voicemail or e-mail before then.

I am supposed to move abroad relatively soon--corona permitting--and no longer own a car. This motorcycle is therefore my own transportation. Can I legally use it to drive to the grocery store over the weekend?

I feel like an idiot for not having checked the initial quote closer. At the same time, I trusted this insurance representative to get me information right, since she's insured all of my vehicles for the past five or six years.

How Fair is My Homeowners Insurance Adjuster Being

    Posted: 15 May 2020 05:09 PM PDT

Hello, I recently sustained some very serious hail and wind damage to my home. I have had three roofing companies give me bids on the repair which is in the ballpark of $18,000. In addition my 1 year old gutters, a large window, my wooden privacy fence, a trampoline, and a few other small things were damaged. The quote for the window was about $450. In total I would say there is probably $20,000 in damage to my home which is thirteen years old. Based on the quotes I was given.

The field adjuster came to my home about two weeks ago and filled out the paperwork. One of the roofing salesmen followed him around which apparently is part of their tactics. I received a call and email today informing me the desk adjuster had completed my claim. These are the figures

    Line Item Totals: $11,899.87

    Material Sales Tax $478.95

    Replacement Cost Value $12,378.82

    Less Depreciation (2,578.52)

    Actual Cash Value $9,800.30

    Less Deductible (1,000.00)

    Net Claim $8,800.30

    Total Recoverable Depreciation $2,578.52

Net Claim if Depreciation is Recovered $11,378.82

Obviously this is not sufficient to repair the damage. I have read online that you can reject the offer but I've also read insurance companies use Exactamate to determine the figures so is that something i can negotiate with? Regardless, the only items included in my quote were the roof and the window, nothing else. How do I go about negotiating with the insurance company to get a fair amount?

    Thank you for your time.

If wear and tear on your car causes you to have an accident, would it be covered by insurance? e.g., your ball joint gives out on the highway and you total your car.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:07 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've searched online and cannot seem to find the concept that I am looking for nor examples of this happening in the past. Let's say that your car has a bad ball joint that decides to give out when driving on the highway, which results in your wheel falling off your car and you crashing in an other car and totaling both cars, what exactly would happen insurance-wise? Would that be considered an at-fault accident? Would knowing that you have a bad ball joint but not taking actions to repair it have any impact on whether you are deemed at fault or not?

    Accident in Fathers Car

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:33 PM PDT

    Hi guys

In November 2019 I rear ended someone while driving my fathers car. His insurance took care of everything and his car was replaced.

Now I have my insurance renewal coming up at the end of the month and was thinking of shopping around for cheaper rates.

My question is, when applying, do I state i have been in an at fault accident, or no because it wasn't on my policy? When I got into the accident on my fathers car I never called my insurance company to tell them since his insurance took care of everything.

    Divorce & Insurance

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:29 PM PDT

My husband and I are separated. Currently stuck in the same house due to Covid.

I am wondering if we should be separating our insurance - vehicles, etc. We both still own our home, which we plan to sell. I'm assuming that we would need to stay joint on the homes. Any thoughts? Should we split our insurance while separated (before upcoming divorce)?

I live in Canada, in case that matters.

Car crashed me into parked car

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:46 PM PDT

Hello, I am wondering who is at fault in this accident. I'm fairly positive the other driver in question is, but I'm just looking for others opinions.

As I was pulling out of parallel parking on the left side of a one way street, the car to my right merged into my lane, and crashed me into a truck parked to my left (it was parked directly in front of me when I was still parked). At this point, my car and the truck's front and rear bumpers were already aligned, I was already driving in my lane. The other driver is at fault, correct? Any opinions would be appreciated, thanks a lot guys

    $500 deductible, file or not

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:41 PM PDT

Asking for a friend in Florida Gate arm was up, when car was 25 yards away Which is unusual, unless gate locked in open position Raining moderately (bar code for gate doesn't work in rain sometimes) As car goes through (5 mph due to speed bumps) arm comes down on roof of car, bouncing 10 times causing dents. Police called Property manager called to scene 2020 leased vehicle Property manager puts new bar-code sticker on car claims the arm malfunctioned due to using a sticker from a previously owned car.

Asked her and she said the dealer transfered the stickers when she bought the car and the property manager that day said "as long as it works no need for a new one"

Usually arm goes down 1 second after a car passes through, no car was in front of damaged vehicle. So she proceeded. In hindsight, the car behind her had a bar code sticker if the gate recognized it, that may have been the reason the arm moved.

Is the arm supposed to stop? By law? When a car is coming thru

She did filed a claim, wasn't she suppose to?

CA: Car totaled, other party at fault, when do they need to make payment?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:53 PM PDT

    Extra details:

Car was totaled, moved from the auto repair shop. They (third party) proposed a dollar settlement amount, that I have not agreed to. They never paid my lender/lien holder, so I paid the car off. I signed the power of attorney, and pink slip. They picked up the car.

When do I get any money? If they cut a check and I cash it, can I still debate the amount?

Car backed into me when I was driving by in the parking lot

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:58 PM PDT

Please bear with me. This is my first Reddit post! Thank you

This occurred in California and with a witness. I was driving through a parking lot that had many families and kids crossing through. I was going about 5-10pmh as I had to stop two times for families with strollers to cross the parking lot. As I continued, this car backs up from a parking lot when more than 80% of my car passed by and I did not see any reverse lights. The other car backed into my passenger back bumper and rims and scratching it. Other driver claims that I came speeding down and ran into his car. (Note: After the driver's insurance accepted fault, the driver now is claiming that his car was parked the whole time; meaning that the driver's car was parked with half of his car just hanging out of the parking spot...driver is also claiming he has more than one witness now even though he clearly had only one.)

All I felt was the impact of when the other car backed into the passenger rear bumper me. I stopped and we took pics of each other's cars. I then asked if we could exchange info. I asked if the other driver had insurance and said "no its a borrowed car" and walked away. Other driver came back a couple of mins later saying what insurance the car had. I assumed the driver called the owner of the car to ask.

I took a pic of the driver's ID and he took a pic of my driver's license. A couple of minutes later, I realized he showed me his ID. I assumed he accidentally showed me the wrong form of ID as the ID and Drivers License looks pretty much the same so I asked, "sorry, you showed me your ID. Do you happen to have your Drivers License?" The driver proceeded to start yelling at me about how he already told me his license was at home (even though no such thing was ever said) , how I can take it up with the cops if I don't believe him, and how I was the one who ran and hit his car. Literally screaming and cussing at me. I replied to him with, "it was just a simple question". And that is when he and his ONE friend came running at me yelling, cussing, harassing me to get back into my car all while with their hands raised. I, by this point, felt threatened and did call the cops. I called the cops and they said they were going to come and help. They never came.

I am just confused about whos fault? I am just confused and don't understand as to how it can be so easy for someone to claim that an accident is not their fault and start making things up and for insurance companies its "word against word"? I don't know... I don't buy that. I have pics that clearly show the other driver is at fault. My insurance adjuster AND the other driver's insurance adjuster both agreed it was the other driver at fault. Days later, the manager of the other insurance adjuster says that they are reversing their liability and they would agree with their driver. My adjuster agreed that the other insurance was shady and I may not ever get my money owed. I just don't understand...

Applying for life insurance w/ multiple carriers?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:57 AM PDT

    Hi--

I'm applying for term life insurance for the first time. I obviously want to get the best rate possible. But I won't know my rate until I go through underwriting. Is there any problem with my applying for life insurance, filling out all the forms, etc., at multiple carriers? Or is this typical? The initial quotes I've gotten (which I don't put much stock in) are very different, for the same policy.

    Thank you!

Macbook Pro Insurance - Lost claim question

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:16 PM PDT

    Hello,

    I have a insurance for a 3000 usd macbook.

I want to know how does the insurance know that I lost my gadget? Can they track it ?

I'm not planning to do a scam claim, i'm just curious of how can they be sure of that. Because it seems too easy, I can pretend to lose it and get a brand new one. Also I can really lose it and then they say it doesn't look lost on their system or something.

    Thanks for answers.

CA: Auto total loss help: when do I get paid?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 02:19 PM PDT

Hi /r/insurance, thanks for your expertise, and apologies for the long post, I want to include as much pertinent information as possible. I was in a car accident, and a couple of weeks later, the insurance informs me that the car is a total loss. The shop that the car was at was threatening to charge me $150+/day for storage fees while I was negotiating FMV for the car, so I moved it to my parent's house, I am still unhappy with their number, and I don't know what to do next.

    Details/facts:

    • Other party is at fault
    • I am dealing with third party insurance (Progressive)
    • No personal injury claim
    • I did not take a rental car, and requesting loss of use
    • Carfax shows my car title history as totaled
    • There was a lien on the car, I paid it off to because I didn't want to accrue interest.
    • They have not paid for anything to me
    • They have made several offers, which I have not agreed to
    • They have paid for:
    1. towing to the shop
    2. adjuster to come out to inspect the car
    3. costs to remove the rear bumper
    4. costs for a second inspection
    5. claims people to talk to me
    6. multiple valuation reports
    • I have paid for:
    1. towing out of the shop
    2. storage
    3. appraisal report
    4. paid of lien
    5. new car

    Assumptions:

    • I don't have collision coverage
    • The car will not be repaired
    • I have made an attempt to explain why the offer is worth more with comps, examples, tried to discredit their examples, etc.

    Research:

    1. 2695.8(2): A comparable automobile must have been available for retail purchase by the general public in the local market area within ninety (90) calendar days of the final settlement offer. The comparable automobiles used to calculate the cost shall be identified by the vehicle identification number (VIN), the stock or order number of the vehicle from a licensed dealer, or the license plate number of that comparable vehicle if this information is available. The identification shall also include the telephone number (including area code) or street address of the seller of the comparable automobile.
    2. The vehicle they chose in their appraisal were either not from licensed dealers, not in the local market, or not within 90 calendar days of the settlement offer.
    1. Loss of use is calculated by referencing the rental value of similar property which the plaintiff can hire for use during the period when he is deprived of the use of his own property.
    2. Council of California Civil Jury Instruction 3903M

    Questions:

    • What should I do?
    • How do I release the car?
    • Should I release the car without being paid?
    • If they take the onus to declare my vehicle a total loss:
    1. can I stop them?
    2. do they need to make payment? to whom (lien-holder/lender/me)?
    3. when are they required to make payment?
    • Can I release the car, get paid what they are offering and continue to dispute their amount?
    • Where else can I look all this up?

    Thanks!

How to start my (21F) car insurance search (CA)?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:42 PM PDT

I'm getting a car this weekend (2001 Rav4) because I'm going to be graduating and starting a full time job. I was originally planning on just adding it onto my dad's insurance plan and paying him the monthly fee (estimated at $40/mo). The car will be under my name though - is that allowed? My friend thinks it would be cheaper if I get my own insurance plan because it's an old car and under my name. How would I go about starting car insurance shopping?

When to get my insurance involved

    Posted: 15 May 2020 09:03 AM PDT

I'm having an issue. On April 30, I was in an accident that was the other driver's fault. I had a witness, and filed a claim through his insurance, while letting my insurance know of what happened. His insurance accepted liability and sent me a check for the amount a repair shop estimated. The check was in my name only, I own the car, so I went to deposit it so I could pay the auto shop directly. This is a small insurance company for events, I was hit by a company car. The check is now on hold and my bank is saying it's due to an error code that either means that account lacks funding or is not authorizing my deposit. I called a couple number, so did my bf trying to get a hold of someone. Straight to voicemail. It's been an hour or so. How long should I wait to let my insurance know, and if I do will they make me pay a deductible if this insurance is unwilling to make wrong right? I can't afford my deductible and my car is ready as of today and I need my car to work. Im so flustered on what to do.

My mom received a check for 12k from her health insurance, then later received a bill from an out of network hospital for 17k. Could the hospital know about the 12k she was sent?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:46 AM PDT

I was sent here from my original post in personal finance. post

We are from NC and my mom has BCBS

I need to help my mom negotiate the hospital bill because she does not have the money to pay the extra costs. I have been advised that the hospital may not even know about the check from the insurance? Do I mention it when negotiating the bill? If they reduce the bill to be less than 12k, would that later create problems for my mom?

I would very much appreciate your help! I am not completely clear on what my mom has been told. I do not stay with her, but know that I can help her more than she can help herself.

Should I have my car repaired before trying to sell it? Weighing my options.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:22 AM PDT

I recently moved to NYC and would like to sell my car. It's a 2012 Nissan Sentra with ~82,000 miles on it. The car runs great and--aside from the body damages I'm about to list below--it's in great mechanical condition.

    • It was hit in 2016 and has some pretty noticeable aesthetic damage to the passenger side of the car (a big dent).
    • Since moving to NYC, my driver's side mirror was hit, and the whole apparatus is sort of hanging precariously.
    • Last week, someone broke into the (very empty) car by smashing my rear passenger window.

I'm thinking to get the most money for the car when I sell it, I may need to fix the damage...?

A bit of background: I went through Geico when the accident happened, and though the other driver was at fault, the police officer on the scene couldn't verify this, and so the other driver wasn't responsible for covering the damage to my car. Per the request of my insurance, I had my car inspected at a repair shop and the quote they gave me to repair the damage was ~$2700. At the time, I couldn't afford to pay the $1000 deductible, and because the damage was purely aesthetic, I decided to live with it.

I also decided to live with the broken mirror, assuming I'd be selling the car ASAP anyway. I didn't file a claim for this. I did, however, immediately file a claim with Geico for the smashed window and will be bringing it to a repair shop for a quote in a couple of days. I can't imagine the quote will hit my deductible.

I don't know a lot about cars: repairs, selling them, or insurance. I guess I'm looking for advice. Can I still use insurance to cover the damage from the accident in 2016 or is it too late? Is it even worth it to get all of these things fixed? FWIW, here is the Kelley Blue Book value for the car:

    • Excellent condition (Looks new and is in excellent mechanical condition): $3274
    • Very Good condition (Has minor cosmetic defects and is in excellent mechanical condition): $2,975
    • Good condition (Has some repairable cosmetic defects and is free of major mechanical problems): $2,545
    • Fair condition (Has some cosmetic defects that require repairing and/or replacing): $2,210

I don't know whether I should just get the window fixed when I bring it in, whether I should get all of the damage fixed, or whether I should just take it to Carmax in its current shape and get what I can for it.

Wheels+tires stolen, what to expect from Geico?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:04 AM PDT

The claims agent on the phone was nice, but was extremely vague about the details of how they cover me in this situation. The wheels+tires were factory and come out to roughly $8k new. But the car is three years used (purchased 9 months ago).

How do they typically value these things? She said an adjuster would come out, but it's not an accident/damage in that way...
