    Intermediate III is Over

    Me after charging billable hours.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:44 AM PDT

There honestly is nothing worse than working in public accounting and studying for your CPA exam at the same time.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 05:29 PM PDT

I often ask myself if putting up with this shit is worth it. This is honestly hell. I'm not depressed or have any mental disorders or anything, but I find myself wanting to give up a loooot of the time. I have multiple friends who just have a bachelor's in comp sci/software engineering and are making ~90k+ right out of college. Meanwhile we make half of that for like 75% more school time.

    It's honestly nuts

I don't know how you all handle public hours so well

    Posted: 08 May 2020 02:05 PM PDT

This is my first busy season as a full time staff and it's never ending. I'm so miserable working this many hours. Especially with the weather getting nicer. My busy season hours are only 60 /wk. Those of you working more..I don't know how you handle it. You're much stronger than I am!

Feel free to leave any tips for motivation. Traveling after busy season was my motivation and now that's no longer viable..

    How important is LinkedIn network

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:55 PM PDT

Aside from the obvious help finding work through connections.

Do hiring managers evaluate how many connections you have?

I have 15 connections because I dont like adding just anyone but after talking to some people with over 100, they said it was wierd I only have 15.

I thought having a high quality network would be better, even if its smaller, but am I wrong?

    Big 4 Employee Benefits

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:46 PM PDT

    Hi all,

So I just signed my FT offer with one of the Big 4 and was reading some of the benefits they offer. As a 20 year old student that has only worked part time jobs, this is kind of overwhelming. Are there any key things I should know about the benefits that are generally offered for these firms? Also things I should keep in mind when joining the firm (ex. opening up savings/retirement accounts)?

    I need an honest opinion

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:16 PM PDT

So Im a accounting major who is just got done final exams and i want an honest opinions from those in the field. I messed up bad and had a terrible first semester. My gpa was 1.3 i was able to fix myself and was able to get a 3.5 this semester which leave my gpa at 2.56 as of now. I wanted to eventually get my cpa and get a job at the big 4 but i feel like i crippled myself because from what i hear they want gpa of 3.5 and above. Do you think i can recover or did i screw up to much for redemption

    Advisory- Valuation @ Big 4

    Posted: 08 May 2020 02:53 PM PDT

Hey all. For those of you that know anything about the valuation department at an accounting firm (big four or otherwise) can you tell me a few things?

    1. What are the titles of the positions in this department? Are they called analysts or advisors? (so that I can Google more)

    2. What do those jobs look like day to day?

    3. What does compensation look like along the carrrer?

    4. What are the exit opportunities from this department?

I'm studying accounting but my passion is for investing. Long term I want to work at a hedge fund or maybe a private equity firm. My ideal day to day would be reading and researching companies for the most attractive investment opportunities.

This department sounded as close to what I want as could be at an accounting firm.

    Thanks!

    PERT Verification from CPA

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:46 PM PDT

My 30 months are up in the next few weeks, but I haven't written the CFE yet. I'll write in September. Can I submit my experience for review from CPA in a few weeks and get confirmation that I met the requirement before the CFE? Or will they sit on it until I apply for membership after passing the CFE? I've heard stories about CPA sitting on reports for a long time then claiming inadequate PERT reports, which delayed people's memberships. I'd like them to review my experience ASAP so that it will be smoother when I apply later, especially if they're going to refuse a report. I'd obviously like to know sooner rather than later if they're going to nitpick a report. Does anyone have any experience doing this?

How to start a part time financial advising gig?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 05:55 PM PDT

I personally like giving advice and love the area of personal finance. I want to start helping people out with their finances on a fee only bases. No commissions, no sales, no bs. Just charge an hourly rate. I'm a licensed CPA, and I know the basics of personal finance but by no means am an expert. How do I go about doing this? I figure I have to first increase my knowledge base. Is there any part time gig I can do after my full time job where I can learn more complex financial planning? I would like to go from there and start my own part time gig. Opinions?

Which masters degree would be the most beneficial in the long run?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 02:02 PM PDT

I'm currently finishing up my junior year in university and am trying to see which masters degree would help the most further down the line. As of now I am enrolled in a 5 year program to receive my undergrad and MBA from my local school. I was lucky enough to land an audit internship with KPMG and have been reading into their Masters of Accounting and Data Analytics (MADA) program. Initially I didn't see any reason to get a masters in accounting as I plan to get my CPA and saw that as redundant. Which option would you recommend and are there any other options I should be looking into?

Does it look bad to switch firm?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Just received an offer from another B4 in a different city that I've been trying to transfer to with my current firm.

I'm a 1st year and received great reviews from my office and have been trying to transfer to a new office for the last 5 months with not much luck. I recently interviewed and received a poison at a different big 4 that would be 9K more than my current firm pays in that city plus 5K CPA bonus.

Should I try to counter with my current firm? And would this move look bad since I've been with the firm less than a year?
