r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Apr 03, 2020 Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:07 AM PDT This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post. Some helpful day to day links, including news:
Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well. See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki: If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned. Posted: 03 Apr 2020 02:41 AM PDT Questrade is allegedly trying to silence users using legal instruments. Please take a stand. I can not say more here. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:34 PM PDT So, to most of us, it would seem the market is behaving irrationally. However I keep thinking about this phone call between Trump and heavy-hitting investors and what was actually discussed. I'm wondering if this is actually an orchestrated move to avoid heavy selling and if selling occurs, large MMs coming in to buy assuming that others on this call will step in to buy at any moment. This is the only reason why such a negative outlook in unemployment and GDP reduction would be actively ignored, and prices seem too high still to be "priced in" for this literal halt of economic activity. Edit: Positions 2800 shares $SPXU @ $27.38 [link] [comments] |
US payrolls plunge 701,000 in March, the first jobs decline since 2010 Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:44 AM PDT https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/03/jobs-report-march-2020.html Nonfarm payrolls dropped by 701,000 in March, according to Labor Department numbers released Friday that only begin to show the economic damage wrought by the coronavirus crisis. The unemployment rate rose to 4.4% as employers just began to cut payrolls ahead of social distancing practices that shut down large swaths of the U.S. economy in order to stop the virus's spread. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a payroll decline of 10,000 and for the unemployment rate to rise to 3.7%. [link] [comments] |
Apparently an insider at Luckin placed a massive short before the fraud announcement went out Posted: 02 Apr 2020 09:13 PM PDT I received this screenshot from my colleague in China, which was distributed in her Wharton classmates group chat. I can't read Chinese but it seems to show a big put on LK expiring 5/15 https://imgur.com/gallery/N21I0Iy Edit: these people need to go to prison. It's too bad SEC likely won't be able to do much. Absolutely fucked [link] [comments] |
[Serious] I lost 20k trading, most of my net worth. I don’t know what to do. I’m really numb. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:59 PM PDT If anyone can provide any sentiment or advice I would greatly appreciate it. I feel absolutely devastated. I am 23. I just don't know what to think. I keep falling for the same stupid problem, emotion and greed. I worked hard all my life and here I am. Not so far from a lottery person. Poor but only for it to disappear for the same stupid reason except I never got to enjoy it. Fuck me. I only have less than 500$ left. I even dropped most of my emergency fund in last month and here I am. Edit: Remark holding held it for a year shit droped And now a bunch of options.started last month when quad witch started. Shouldve looked at the chart it was sold to shit. remark I had put 12k in it, and dropped to 3k. Then I finally put 5k in. Played around and today was the final fuck up had the drop 1.5k switched out for 4/3 expirations and it went up 2k. I knew then I should have pull but heavily influenced by wsb. Droped down to less than 500. Sold it last moment because it wasn't gonna be worth anything tomorrow. Sorry of messy thought im allover the placd [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:50 AM PDT I'm only wondering now because of the Tweet he said yesterday which caused the rally of oil prices. Sorry if this has been posted. [link] [comments] |
Friday brings 1000000 world cases and a spike in unemployment Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:58 AM PDT Friday brings us 1000000 worldwide cases, over 50000 deaths, start to the SBA loan program and unemployment for March. Unemployment jumped to 4.4%, with U6 unemployment up to 8.7% and Nonfarm payrolls down -700000. All of these numbers were bigger than expected, with broad layoffs in all industries and sectors. Global stock markets are relatively calm compared to other Friday's during this crises. In Asia, Japan and South Korea finished almost neutral, while China was slightly down, -0.5%. Europe started in the red over 1%, but as trading has continued at this time 8 30AM ET, they have recovered some of their losses. British FTSE is down 0.5%, French CAC down 0.2%, while the German DAX has turned positive +0.4%. The US futures have followed the global markets, going down around 1% in the early hours of the morning and regaining some of these losses after European trading started. At this time they are down around 0.5%, after being positive for a couple of minutes around 8AM. The coronavirus outbreak is still spreading and the US is contributing the most to the new case count. Yesterday it had almost 30000 new cases, up 10% from the day before. The President invoked the Defense Production Act to press more companies, especially 3M to ramp up production of necessary materials since the stock piles are running out. If the numbers continue to grow at this rate, we could see ventilator shortages and escalation of the emergency. Hopefully this will not happen. Economic data from Europe this morning was very week, with PMI's from Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the EU all missed expectations, down in the low 30's and high 20's. This signal significant economic decline. In the USA, the Small Business Administration will start the loan programs to help the economy. After the unemployment numbers hit there was the same reaction to the jobless claims numbers yesterday and last week. A spike of 1% in the next 3 minutes. I will not go into the logic of this, since there is absolutely no logic but that is what is happening. For trading today, I do not recommend getting at the open, let the algorithms do their thing. After this in the afternoon I will be looking for a decline and try to take advantage of it. There is a lot of long positions out there that could cover from weekend risk and this should bring the market down. Good luck! [link] [comments] |
It’s all gonna come tumbling down. Prove me wrong. Posted: 03 Apr 2020 04:34 AM PDT We've got about 90 days before it's DOW 8000 and it's Stone Age time. Covid-19 isn't gonna stop. There's a second wave sweeping China. People have already stopped paying off credit cards. Auto loans are next. I'm shorting everything I can And hedging against Funds that are holding debt. It's worthless paper. Credit defaults were already up 5% this year over last. If it gets to 20% it's a fire sale. And this was trending up before. Covid-19 Don't get me started on bad, ninja no verification, no down payment auto loans. What's done is done. 7:45am Friday 4-3-2020 I hope I'm not to late to have my broker put my plan in action. Talk me down. Anyone. [link] [comments] |
Opinions on a reasonable entry point for MGM? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 11:24 AM PDT Been looking to get into MGM but I'm not sure what a fair price to jump in it would be. I'd like to go back in time and pick it up for $7 but I doubt it'll drop to that again unless the US orders a shutdown for May.... Anyway if you have a price target I'd like to hear what it is and why! Thanks [link] [comments] |
Stocks that dipped the most since the pandemic? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:17 AM PDT |
Unpopular opinion- it's okay not to buy at the very bottom Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:34 PM PDT A lot of users are putting themselves in bad positions by trying to time the very bottom and then buying in only to sink with the rest of the market. If you're planning on holding for the long term there is nothing wrong with waiting for there to be sure signs that the market is staying in the green. You are tossing money out the window trying to squeeze the most profit out of questionable stocks like AAL. Wait and sit on cash for a while. [link] [comments] |
Anyone loading up on oil stock/etf shares? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 11:27 AM PDT Logic is this meeting today at the White House with oil executives should go well and the OPEC meeting on Monday. Bought in today around lunch time and will hopefully sell for a small profit on Monday. Anyone else have thoughts on this? Btw I see oil keep sinking a little further but this could be a short term play Positions: Exxon $38.80 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2020 07:55 AM PDT I wrote this post in another sub on Monday and the timing was a bit lucky but I think it still applies. Good Day Eh? Its your favorite Canadian making a post that might even interest you yanks while your markets gets ravaged by JPow and the RONA. I've been looking for a proper oil play in CAD dollars for a week so far and this is what I got: I'll keep this short. SU and CNQ are best in breed and they've held up surprisingly well. So they're the safe 12 month bet for those of you with TP hands. For gents who's balls have dropped I would recommend ERF and FRU. My favorite is ERF because their debt to EV is still reasonable. Cashflow has been revised down almost 50% and it currently trades at 2.5x. It's EV is down the most of any energy company in Canada over the past 1 year but it's assets are ok. It wouldn't take much to get this thign back to $5. CAD Dollar is dirt cheap as it's tied to Oil as well. I bought all 4. I intend on doubling or potentially quadrupling down on these if the prophesied dump comes in April. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 10:10 PM PDT His tweets were obvious attempts at pumping up the oil markets. And, again, turned out to be bullshit. The Saudis called an emergency meeting for OPEC tomorrow...but the only one crowing about a "truce" is Trump. So, what the fuck? Why is Trump still taken as a serious source of news on fronts like these? [link] [comments] |
If you had to commit to one or two airline stocks what would it be? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 11:52 AM PDT I began my stocks journey by attempting to learn day trading but realized with my profession, I don't have the time needed to be successful without sacrificing my current obligations. Instead of withdrawing my money, I decided to place them all into long term plays and let it sit. I current have shares in DIS, XOM, BAC, MGM, PK, F (looking for a price to get out and place those funds elsewhere) and 4 airlines (DAL, UAL, ALK, ALGT). I want to diversify a bit more and am trying to decide which airlines should I remain in. If you had to hedge your bets on one or two airlines to survive the COVID crisis, which would it be? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:03 AM PDT I'll start. These are not in order but: Dominoes Amazon GSX Nvidia When I think of long term I look for a stable earnings with a mild to medium annual earnings growth rate [link] [comments] |
Why don’t companies have emergency funds? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:11 PM PDT You always hear about how us as individuals need to have a 3-6 month emergency fund. Do any companies (big or small) follow the same practice? Seems like common sense, but I get the feeling most companies don't have enough cash on hand to weather this pandemic. [link] [comments] |
Are you entering or are you looking for a bottom? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:10 AM PDT Are you scaling in now, or waiting in anticipation of a significantly lower bottom? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:39 PM PDT is the bond market go up or down if the country of it suffers? or am i asking the wrong question [link] [comments] |
Confidential and proprietary? McKinsey report on impacts of COVID19 Posted: 03 Apr 2020 11:18 AM PDT Well this PDF is on their own website for now, and freely available despite being marked "Confidential and proprietary". Did someone mess up folder permissions? It's a great read for investors and stock pickers, and I recommend downloading a copy immediately. Cheers!

If you're investing in casinos/resorts which ones and why? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:09 PM PDT I've been eyeing MGM, Wynn and Penn but it's tough to make a decision. Obviously in the short term they're decimated by this virus, but in a normal market they're very profitable companies and popular among the people so as long as they don't go bankrupt I expect to see them returning to normal within 2-4 years, which for some of them could mean 2-4x your money. Which ones are you looking at and why did you choose that one when comparing it to it's competetion? [link] [comments] |
Are Russia and the Saudis actually coming to the table? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:15 PM PDT Earlier this morning, Trump posted the following tweet: Just spoke to my friend MBS (Crown Prince) of Saudi Arabia, who spoke with President Putin of Russia, & I expect & hope that they will be cutting back approximately 10 Million Barrels, and maybe substantially more which, if it happens, will be GREAT for the oil & gas industry! As a result, the market jumped 5 percentage points. Later this afternoon he tweeted that 15 million barrels were being cut, leading to another afternoon jump. Crude oil futures ended the day up 35% based on his tweet. I think Trump is not fully telling the truth:
https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2020/04/02/kremlin-denies-putin-spoke-to-saudi-crown-prince-a69850 Based on all this evidence, I believe Trump is not telling the truth in his tweet. I'm not sure I can go as far as saying he's lying, but something seems off. [link] [comments] |
