Python For Finance Youtube Tutorials (Back-testing, Stock Screener, Alerts + more)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:43 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I just posted another episode in my python for finance Youtube series. This series walks you through step by step many relevant python programs and is perfect for beginners as I start right from downloading python.

Episode 6: Calculate Pivot Points and Resistance

The new episode shows you how to automatically calculate key pivot points and resistance in a stocks price action. . Here is an example of what it looks like for Tesla: https://imgur.com/ElCqTy5

This program can be easily linked with a python email alert system to notify you when a stock breaks through resistance.

If you are interested here is the link to the newest episode:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gdpaita5GcE

I have also linked below the other episodes.

Episode 1: Intro to Python for Finance

This should be the first one you watch if you are new to python. I go through everything from downloading the language to accessing and manipulating stock data

    https://youtu.be/myFD0np9eys

Episode 2: How to Back-test Strategies (Moving averages+ more)

I show how to set up a program that can test any strategy where you can codify entry and exit signals. It can test performance going back decades and outputs Batting average, Average Gain, Average Loss, Max Gain, Max Loss, Average days held for Gains, Average days held for losses and Total Return.

    https://youtu.be/eYK2SNygAog

Episode 3: How to make a Stock Screener (Mark Minervini Criteria)

This episode covers how to set up a program that can screen for any technical criteria. I use Mark Minervini's trading template as an example. It's very easy to modify.

    https://youtu.be/hngHA9Jjbjc

    Episode 4: Green Line Calculator

This episode shows how to calculate Green Line Values and write them to excel. Green line values are prior ATHs that are significant resistance.

    https://youtu.be/m90HHpbHzlw

    Episode 5: Email Alerts

This episode shows you how to set up email alerts that you can use to alert yourself of any technical criteria. It is easy to modify and use with any strategy

    https://youtu.be/Ut_CpsF4qcs

I hope you guys find these tutorials helpful. I've found that coding helps strengthen discipline and remove emotion from your trading. These tools have helped me improve my process.

    Take care and stay safe!

Futures are up after lower than expected US GDP contraction

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 06:00 AM PDT

The reported 4.8% (4.0 expected) contraction in GDP was the largest drop since late 2008.

But yet DOW is up +327 as soon as the report was released. How long can the fed keep this up? Do I pull the trigger and invest all my cash and hope the fed won't stop printing money?

    Just mind blowing. Thoughts?

Markets completely ignoring new, randomized and controlled Remdesivir study finding

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:46 AM PDT

There were a few interesting news of Remdesivir out today. In the news everywhere, we have the following:

    1. Gilead's own study withOUT a control group showing 5-day course and 10-day course of Remdesivir showing no difference.

    2. An NAIAD study showing that Remdseivir helped patients who were already on the path to recovery to actually recover a few days earlier—but no effect in those succumbing to the disease.

Besides these two results today, a multi-center collaboration in China released the study of an actual randomized, double-blinded study with placebo control. A much more comprehensive, albeit an ever slightly different study goal, study than the two results that American news are flaunting. This other study showed a much different result than what the market is being hyped on today.

Yet, the news outlets and the market has completely ignored this more comprehensive study.

    https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31022-9/fulltext

In case you don't have time or background to understand the study, here's the authors' summary:

Our trial found that intravenous remdesivir did not significantly improve the time to clinical improvement, mortality, or time to clearance of virus in patients with serious COVID-19 compared with placebo. Compared with a previous study of compassionate use of remdesivir, our study population was less ill (eg, at the time of enrolment, 0·4% were on invasive mechanical ventilation or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation vs 64% in the previous study) and was treated somewhat earlier in their disease course (median 10 days vs 12 days). Such differences might be expected to favour remdesivir, providing greater effects in our study population, but our results did not meet this expectation.

But, hey, whatever. If people want to keep dumping money into a faux pump, then more power to them. Wish I had that kind of disposable cash.

Stock watch list April 29, 2020

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 05:45 AM PDT

Good morning, here's my watch list

Gap Ups: AAL, BA, CCL, DIN, EAT , GILD, GOOG, IMMU, JNPR, LSCC, LOV, NCLH, RCL, SIG, SPOT, TCOM, VLO, WW

Gap downs: AKAM, AMD, APRN, HAS, NFLX, ZM

SPY gapping slighty after declining all day yesterday but still has room to the 200 day moving average which can act as resistance. There are many stocks going to be moving right now due to earnings catalyst in the market but the biggest movers will usually be earnings plays themselves and thats what I will be focusing on. Good Luck Trading.

Crude oil surplus is less than predicted in the meantime oil tankers are used for storage?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 12:48 PM PDT

US crude oil inventories rose by 9 million barrels last week to 527.6 million barrels this week that's 3 million barrels less than expected in the meantime dozens of oil tankers are parked outside harbours. 1 VLCC oil tanker can store around 2 million barrels so can't it be that a couple of these tankers are filled up?

Also the US gasoline stockpile has come down but that's not strange since refineries are operating at less than 70% in stead of the normal 90% see chart.

Question: long on oil tanker stocks?

Capricor Therapeutics Jumps 80% On Positive COVID-19 Treatment Data

    https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/stock-alert%3A-capricor-therapeutics-jumps-80-on-positive-covid-19-treatment-data-2020-04-29

I wonder what the future holds. Its a risky bet at this point since the sample size was so small. But if the next sample size confirms the results, this could be very promising both financially and for COVID-19 in general.

    NTG/TYG thoughts?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:44 PM PDT

I've been looking at these for awhile, both energy investment funds with >40% ADY. I was looking at NTG primarily and I'd only need around $20,000 invested to make a $1000 a month return with it's 60%. It's at all time lows, and since the stocks crashed in the middle of March, it's been on a bullish trend and is looking like it'll keep rising. My question is; as a new and inexperienced trader I know this is a too good to be true situation, and am wondering what I'm overlooking here/how I can find better high yield and stable dividend stocks.

What Stocks should I look into today?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 08:04 AM PDT

With recent news and panic sellers, the Oil tankers stocks came down. They have the best bullish option that I know of. But the panic selling brought the stock down when is projected to shoot over $15. What other Stocks are being brought down when theyre supposed to be up or bullish?

NAT is the leading Oil Tanker stock who went down from $8 to $6. When is projected to be up to $10-$20. I bought at $6.50 3 days ago and I'm holding.

    Transfer stocks from Cash App??

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:20 PM PDT

Does anyone know how to or if I can transfer my cash app stocks to another brokerage? Didn't realize how stuck I'd be but I have now invested over 8k and I'd honestly like to be in a more advanced and reputable platform for investing. Don't get me wrong... honestly have nothing against cash app but I would just prefer a different platform for investing.. thanks in advance!

    Question about online brokers

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:06 PM PDT

Why does it take until the next morning sometimes for cash to be available after a trade, when other times the cash is immediately available?? I don't have day trading ability and use TD Ameritrade if that matters

    What works for some...

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:20 PM PDT

"There is no single market secret to discover, no single correct way to trade the markets. Those seeking the one true answer to the markets haven't even gotten as far as asking the right question, let alone getting the right answer." – Jack Schwager

Not everyone is going to trade the same. If we did we would all be rich or broke, no in-between 😅 remember that there's isn't a one true rule to trading the markets. If you ask one trader how to do it and ask another, you will get completely different answers. Don't expect to ever ask that one question that is suddenly going to turn you into a profitable trade. The best thing you can do is gather all of the information you can find, process it and try and implement that into trading in a way that is helpful to you. Practice, practice practice practice. You will likely lose money. But if you make sure that you use small amounts that are relevant to your experience and you keep practicing and learning from mistake then you will get there.

There are things like indicators and oscillators and trends that can help you make a decision that a lot of people use. There are new apps and articles that people use. These are things that can be used in the exact same way as another trader uses them. But when and where they use them is an entirely different story.

One traders frame of mind may be completely different to another. One trader can set their TP just one pip above another traders TP and that can mean the difference between making money and losing money. No single trade will be the same as another (unless your copy trading).

You must remember to ignore all of the noise and process the information for yourself. That's the only way you will know whether something will work for you or not.

Saying that, its good to hear OPINIONS on how to do things and have good discussions about the topic in hand. It can be very productive in fact. Any question is a good question if it means that you yourself are going to learn something from the answer. There is so much solid information and educational to be taught and learned. BUT they are all just pieces to your own puzzle that you must figure out.

Illiquid securities? Can’t buy a stock I’ve been wanting...

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:09 AM PDT

So there is this gaming company, CD Projekt, that I have had my eye on for some time. Their stock is very small, doesn't exchange hands frequently. They tend to jump between 18$ and 22$, so I set an alert to let me know when it drops below 20$. It's at 18.50 today and I can't buy any shares due to "illiquidity". I use fidelity by the way. I've been waiting a while to buy this stock, and I'd be willing to buy it at up to 20$ a share. Of course I'm only dealing with 150$ as I've spent most of my budget for stocks so far. So I placed a limit order of 6 shares at 19$.

For those seasoned in the stock market, what can I expect? Is there anything I can do to make sure I get some shares in this stock? My belief is that this is a very good company, with a solid balance sheet and good yearly growth. I think it has the chance to blow up over the years and would like to at least get a little money in it now. So any advice would be appreciated. The ticker is OTGLY by the way.

Best sources on how to analyze and pick dividend stocks for safe dividends as well as stocks that grow their dividend over time?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 02:45 PM PDT

Hello I posted this earlier but apparently I didn't have enough words and so it got automatically deleted. But anyways I would appreciate if anyone here can point me to a YouTube video or an article on what would be the best way to analyze DIVIDEND stocks so that I can learn to pick stable individual stocks instead of risky ones. As right now I'm investing in ETF's but I want to grow my horizons and start picking individual stocks. Thanks.

What are the risks of trading after hours?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:27 PM PDT

Hi. I was thinking of selling off some stock using thinkorswim.

Basically, if I have an Ameritrade account, that is the same account as thinkorswim? But only on thinkorswim can I trade after hours, if I understand right.

Let's say I put a limit order to sell shares after 8 p.m. in extended hours? What are the drawbacks of doing it that way? Isn't this an advantage because it has all night and all next day to sell at my price?

Selling airlines AAL for pre-earnings report profit?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:27 AM PDT

Hello, 3 days ago I bought American Airlines at $10 since it has not reached that in a few weeks. I wanted to know if I should sell again (it being at around 12.30) since the earnings report should not be positive due to the corona virus. Hopefully it'll go down even lower or just as low.

PayPal Holdings and Square have both proven to be very successful. As leading companies in digital payments, PayPal's Venmo and Square's Cash App are allowing people to receive their stimulus check via these platforms. PayPal obviously has longevity but they both also compete with banks.

Do you have either of these companies in your portfolio? If not, which one would you prefer and why?

    Does value averaging work

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:28 PM PDT

I read an article and an excerpt went like this:

"An investment period which begins with $100 invested would have a greater weight than one that begins with only $75. This makes intuitive sense: More money invested means the percentage return over that period affects your portfolio more"

In that sense, how does value averaging actually bring about more returns, than compared to say investing a lump sum or even DCA?
