My parents tanked my credit when I was 16, I’m now 20 and need advice. Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:24 AM PDT Throwaway account for anonymity. I've recently discovered that my credit score is in the ballpark of 500 even though I've never owned a credit card in my life. I checked my credit report and discovered a plethora of negatives and unpaid accounts totaling to about $7000. All of the charges occurred when I was around 16-years-old so it would've been impossible for me to have made them. I asked my parents and they admitted to having made the charges and said that they would "make things right". That was 2 years ago. I did some research and discovered that even IF they paid the accounts off I'd still have a pretty shitty credit score. I've also talked to my brothers and they've reported having the same thing happen to them. My score has prevented me from securing a car, applying for housing to move out, and securing loans. My score is also not a reflection of my financial literacy and it sucks because I have great money management skills and have always paid my bills on time. I need advice on how to go forward with the situation. [link] [comments]
Laid off but employers keep asking for my time/advice. Posted: 07 Apr 2020 12:05 PM PDT UPDATE AT END: Not sure if this is the correct place to post, but it seems like sort of a financial problem too! Sorry in advance for the long post, but I am frustrated. I was a marketing manager for a small physical therapy business and I was recently laid off due to Covid19 without warning, meaning no time to gather my work materials or explain to my bosses what I was currently working on. I was one of two people in the marketing department (the second person worked both front desk and marketing) but I was the one who knew the ins & outs of all of the software being used, and we were also planning to rebrand in April (new logo, name, business plan). I have been a little frustrated during this whole process, as AFTER they laid me off, I offered to come in for 5-10 hours a week (I did work 40-45 hrs) and receive partial pay, since I knew the owners did not know anything about marketing, and this is a crucial time for website updates, virtual meetings, and IT problems, all of which I could work on or solve. However, they told me no. So now I am in the position of being called/texted nearly every day with them asking if I can log into the software and show them how to email, explain to them how to navigate complicated software, and pretty much make them a new marketing plan for the pandemic & having to go completely virtual. Now, at first I didn't mind giving them a few tips, but it is now getting out of hand. Like I said before, I wake up to emails & texts with in depth questions, most of which I would reply "I am not entirely sure. all of that information would be on my laptop at the office." and the proceed to give them my username and password to my laptop so they could log on. A few days ago my boss texted me asking if I could call her and a colleague and explain the email marketing software I use for our email blasts, as well as explain how to edit the website. Seeing as I don't want to offer my services for free (this would likely take hours to explain) I replied with "It's a really complicated process. I can give you the user and Password, but this would be something I would really have to sit down to explain/do. I am available to come in tomorrow or Friday if needed for a few hours", to which my boss replied, it's ok, we'll keep in touch. Now, fast forward to today, I receive ANOTHER text, asking to call me tomorrow to explain the same processes/systems asked about in the previous text. I haven't replied, and I don't know what to do. I feel guilty not helping them, but I know that if I offer my advice for free, they will likely take advantage of me and my skills. However, if they do hire people back after this, me working for FREE out of my own time could put me ahead of others when it comes to the re-hiring process. Any advice? Has anyone had a similar problem in these times? UPDATE: I wanted to thank everyone commenting for the thorough, great advice. With this being the first time I have ever been involuntarily laid off/furloughed, I was really lost, especially with the situation of the world currently. I'll be taking the call from my boss tomorrow afternoon and make a point of my prices for independent consulting work, and from this point forward standing my ground and not offering anymore details/help. As everyone has made a point of, its clearly a business relationship- service in return for $$. I think over all I just needed a little confirmation to stand up for myself and most importantly, have faith in my skill and ability as a marketer. I'll update again tomorrow afternoon! Again, thank you all for the meaningful advice, I truly appreciate it! [link] [comments]
Lost. Sadly laid off after 8 years. What to do with my retirement? Posted: 07 Apr 2020 03:30 PM PDT Hi all, laid off and I filed for unemployment. I got that going for now and I am applying with my resume and cover letter to jobs I am interested in. Just wanted to say since I have your attention I feel many are in my shoes and I am thankful you are reading this and providing suggestions. I hope you and your families doing okay. My spouse works in health care field and I miss them a lot and currently haven't physically seen them in a while... I'm not even sure companies are looking to hire at the moment. The only thing giving me hope is that job postings have very recent dates. I'm confused and haven't heard back from any potential employer. I had about $190k in the 401k with Fidelity. Now that I am no longer working, what should I do with this 401k? Leave it or do something with it? On a side note I am bummed and trying to keep my head up. I've learned despite being an awesome employee/colleague/manager companies will cut you off if they want. My company didn't even need to lay off a ton of people since I am familiar with our company's finances. I am bummed and trying to keep my head up. If it helps I am 30 and with 3 kids and a spouse. No debt at all. We rent an apartment. Anyway my question is about the retirement and just wanted to vent that it sucks to be unemployed. Maybe I'll buy Animal Crossing to relieve some stress. Posted: 07 Apr 2020 07:18 AM PDT My ex girlfriend and I were going to a vacation resort in Mexico on April 10th 2020. We booked it on September 22nd 2019 and her brother (one of my best friends) paid for it using his card because my card had a 3,000$ limit on it and there was only one room left at the time. The vacation cost 7500$ total and he paid for it using his CC. I sent him 7500$ over the next 3 days and everything was fine. However, my ex and I broke up in December and I tried hard to find someone else to go to the resort with me but ultimately figured, 7500$ would be nice to have. If you called within a month of the reservation you didn't lose anything so I waited until March 5th. After talking to them on the phone about cancellation and requesting a refund, we had to get my buddy on the phone because I forgot we used his card and I didn't have the last 4 digits of the CC. Turns out, my buddy cancelled that card in February and the resort cannot release any funds to anyone / any card that isn't on file. The lady we spoke to said it's not a problem that the card is cancelled. All we had to do was verify the cancellation and the funds would be charged to the cancelled card and we could just call the CC number and request the funds be sent via check by mail. She said it happens often and people never have a problem getting the funds from their cancelled card. Well, it's been over a month now and my buddy has called the CC # 4 or 5 times and they've said they haven't received the funds. I'm on hold with the resort now for the next 54 minutes and not sure what to do about this. I don't think it takes over a month to refund my money. [link] [comments]
Is it not smart to buy a house and just rent an apartment instead? Posted: 07 Apr 2020 01:31 PM PDT My girlfriend and I are moving in together next month. We have found a nice apartment that we like and signed the lease on it. I just graduated college and she will graduate next month. I just got a job as a financial analyst making 52k a year. I have 28k in student loans, she has about 35k. The second we mentioned to her parents several months ago that we wanted to get an apartment, they were on our case about buying a house. To them I guess the only right way to do it is to buy a house. Her parents are in the 60's and have lived in the same house they bought 40+ years ago. Is there a right or wrong way to go about renting vs buying? I have about 14k in savings but I am in no position to buy a house right now and neither is my girlfriend. Do I want a house one day? Of course I do. I just don't understand why her parents are pushing the issue so much. [link] [comments]

My bank account was hacked for 25k. I don’t know what’s going on Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:01 PM PDT I signed into my account and noticed a wire transfer for 25k to a brokerage account in my name. It says my name in the detail. I was looking into a recent wire I sent to my bank for 10k, which never went through / or reversed for some reason so I ended up ACH transferring 10k to get it to the bank I needed. The fraudulent 25k wire happened 2 weeks ago around the same time I initiated the other wire transfer. I used public wifi recently but I can't think of any time when I comprised this account info. I now believe my account has been comprised it's no longer safe to keep open but I need the rest of the money in there to pay my bills. Will they freeze the remaining funds? I have been trying to reach customer service but there is a long wait. [link] [comments]
21 years old making $44,000 a year while still living at home.. how do I not screw thus up? Posted: 07 Apr 2020 03:09 PM PDT Hey PF, So I am very fortunate enough work at a place where they've increased my hourly pay substantially in just 7 months. From about $29,000 a year to now just shy of $44,000. I don't have too many monthly bills: Spotify - $9.99 iCloud - $0.99 AppleCare+ - $14.99 Monthly contribution to household - $145 Car payment - $350 Insurance - $150 $1000 in savings and about $200 CC debt. So I've got some extra cash floating around.. how can I take advantage of my current situation. I have basically no finance knowledge, the only thing I have is a loose budget setup with YNAB (more to just track my purchases than really budget my money). [link] [comments]
Airlines mandated to refund. How’s that work with Chase cards? Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:30 AM PDT Per the recent DoT message, airlines will need to refund flights cancelled or significantly changed due to COVID. Anyone have luck getting a refund through chase? I submitted forms 3 weeks ago and finally heard back and am getting a credit through Delta and Air Canada. However, looks like we can now get refunds. Chase customer service line took about 4 hours to get ahold of. Chase holders- do you think we will get refunds? How will you approach that given how impossible it is to talk to someone from support? IRS is telling me my SSN is ivalid... Posted: 07 Apr 2020 01:31 PM PDT so i tried to get a transcript of my tax return from last year and used the automated phone service as i do not have a credit card (so the IRS can verify my identity). and the automated service told me my SSN was invalid. it's the same SSN thats on paystubs, previous tax returns and the social security card itself. i tried multiple times to make sure i wasn't making a mistake. why would my SSN be invalid? i wasn't really able to find any help with a google search. just verification help for employers. thank you in advance for any information you can provide. Assurance for Home Under Renovation (IN) Posted: 07 Apr 2020 01:56 PM PDT Hey guys! I'm looking at renting a house that is currently under renovation starting later this year. Is it normal for a lease for such a house to include assurances that the house will be finished with renovations before the move-in date? If so, what are some common assurances and what is the name of such a clause so I can look into common language use in these clauses? [link] [comments]
Always Join Class-Action Lawsuits Posted: 07 Apr 2020 04:32 PM PDT If you ever get contacted by a law firm about joining a class-action lawsuit (unless you're planning to sue the defendant independently), go ahead and add your name, as it only takes a few minutes, and you have nothing to lose. I just got a check for hundreds of dollars for having responded to a postcard in the fall. Their estimate had only been $20, but I guess not enough people bothered. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Apr 2020 03:08 PM PDT Besides taking up administrative resources to the hindrance of others who are in a much worse position, is there a downside to asking for a 6 month forbearance? According to some recent news, like https://www.housingwire.com/articles/fha-rolls-out-new-mortgage-relief-options-amid-coronavirus-outbreak, we may qualify for a bullet repayment at the end of the loan - and by then we can presumably refinance or move. We just got this house in October on a 30yr term, so we have 29.5 years left to go. We can continue to pay the mortgage - albeit on one salary which is less comfortable. However, we could also use this money for other debt repayment, renovation projects, and to create a better savings cushion. I feel like this is taking advantage of the situation. Is this just a rude thing to do? And are there any other downsides, like if we wanted to refinance in the near future? [link] [comments]
Advice on Allocating my Savings? Posted: 07 Apr 2020 05:52 AM PDT Hey all, I am a 25 year old teacher, and I have been following this sub for years, and have taken the advice I have seen often. However, I am at a point now where I am not sure what to do with some of my savings. Here's a quick breakdown of my savings so far:
I am a teacher, and I don't get a 401k - instead, I get a 403b with no matching. Right now, I am not contributing to the 403b because there are additional fees associated with it, where I could just buy the same stocks through my IRA with much smaller fees (I am limited to the $6,500 limit with the IRA, but I can't really take advantage of the $19,500 limit of the 403b anyway, so I just don't invest in it). Now, I am still unsure of my future in regards to buying a house. I had a serious long-term girlfriend, with whom I saved for buying a house; however, we have since broke up, so now I am unsure of what I should do with that money. My goals are to have enough for retirement, enough savings on hand in the next 3-5 years for a down-payment for a potential mortgage. Let me know what you all think. Thank you! Investing child's savings account Posted: 07 Apr 2020 07:43 PM PDT My child's savings account has over $700 in it currently. Is this a good long-term investment plan? 24, 10k to invest, long-term investing with Vanguard. Posted: 07 Apr 2020 05:27 PM PDT I have 10k to invest. Would it be a good idea to put 3k into Vanguard Wellington fund (VWELX), then with the 7k left, put 50% of it into either Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) or Vanguard 500 Index Fund Investor Shares (VFINX). Then put 20% into VXUS, then the remaining 30% into BND. Then once a year adjust these amounts so that they're equal. Hold onto for 5-10 years? (Hold onto the wellington for however long i want) [link] [comments]
Appraisal came in under accepted offer Posted: 07 Apr 2020 03:49 PM PDT Hi all, Right to it... 2br 2bathroom condo unit was listed for 178k. I saw it and offered full asking price after 5 days on the market. This was mid/late March. Appraisal came in yesterday at 175k, so 3k difference from purchase price. Not a big deal, I can afford the minimal difference in payments. As a note, my lender is a major bank, got locked in at a rate of 3.375 at 12% down. Could've done more but didn't want to leave myself pocket poor or dip into emergency savings. I have a call setup with my realtor tomorrow to discuss, but just wanted to hear any ideas/thoughts/options I may have? I've done my basic google searches and will be doing more tonight. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
How fast do funds clear from a wire transfer? Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:57 PM PDT I need to wire funds tomorrow and just found out the account I moved my money into to make the wire transfer can't make wire transfers to outside banks. I am able to wire funds to other bank accounts I have own however. Does anyone know how quickly a bank to bank wire transfer will take? Ideally I wire the money from Bank A to Bank B, and then send the external wire from Bank B. I want to make sure I'm fine there and don't need a backstop. [link] [comments]
Are IRS tax payments automatically extended to June 15th? Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:35 PM PDT My father did his taxes and owes about $900 dollars to the IRS for this year's taxes. Before this whole thing started, he set it up so that the IRS would deduct the money from his checking account on April 15th. He's now lost his job due to the shutdowns and it owuld be helpful if he could pay on June 15th instead. Are they automatically moving back payment dates or do you need to send the IRS a letter requesting that? Question is whether he needs to contact the IRS to change the automatic debit date. A few questions about filing taxes for the first time Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:33 PM PDT This year I'm going to be filing for the first time, and there are some things I'm a little confused about. First, I'm a freelancer. As best I can tell I'm required to file quarterly, right? I've also heard of people paying monthly instead of quarterly. Why would someone do that? Also, am I required to file and pay quarterly, or do I file each quarter and just pay in the April filing along with everyone else? Speaking of quarterly filing, since this is my first time filing I'm filing specifically for the quarter from Jan 16-April 15 (I know the deadline was extended to July, but that's the period I'm accounting for on my taxes, right?) Finally, I am an adult dependent living at home. When I file, is my dad no longer able to claim me as a dependent on his taxes? Thank you all so so much for the help. I answered a lot of other questions I had just doing my diligence Googling, but got overwhelmed with info and confused on a few things. ty! [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Apr 2020 07:55 AM PDT Hi. I currently live in NYC and make around 130,000$. I want to move out of NY and recently got a job offer from Tampa FL. They are willing to give 85K annually, wanted to know is it a normal price for FL and will it be enough? I am married and no kids. Wife is dependent on me. Edit. Thank you all for your replies. Should have mentioned as well - whether i will save more money if I want to live in FL. Bc part of reason is, I want to leave NY to save more money and buy a nice affordable house.
