House guest "got hurt." I reported it to my insurance company. As it turns out, she lied. Now what?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I had a guest (a "friend" of a friend) over to our house several months ago. While she was out of sight outside, I heard a shriek. I found her lying on the ground, crying. Nearby, our Labrador was standing there looking confused. The guest accused our dog of jumping on her, knocking her down and hurting her neck. Knowing this could be a serious injury, I reported it a few days later to our insurance company as a potential issue.

Now, before I go any further, please understand. This dog is not quite elderly (but close to it), extremely gentle and, in the 9 years we've had her, has NEVER jumped on anyone (other than a few times when she was just a tiny puppy...but she learned quickly not to do it and never did any harm with her 7#-puppy jumping).

I told this to the insurance company but that didn't seem to matter in the least.

In the weeks following the incident, I talked with people who know this house guest. She is a liar. She has done this repeatedly. She apparently doesn't do it to defraud insurance companies but rather because she likes the attention. "Oh, poor me. I've been hurt again."

I'm not worried about getting sued. Apparently she dropped the pretense of being hurt shortly after the incident. The Saturday after she was still claiming to be in a lot of pain. The Sunday (the next day) after that, she was apparently playing tennis.

But now we have a black mark on our homeowners' insurance and they are threatening to drop us as part of a reorganization where they are saying they would technically have to rewrite (not just renew) the policy.

We have NEVER made a claim in more than 20 years with them (other than for a roof damaged by hail). For "reasons," it would be very disadvantageous to move to a new insurance company. What can/should I do? Is the insurance company going to believe me and/or care if I say, "It seems that she lied"?

Where would the fault lie in a wayward trolley incident?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 11:06 PM PDT

So today I saw a wayward trolley rolling through the carpark, it just thumped haphazardly into a concrete wall and stopped, no harm no foul.

But it got me wondering, if someone released their trolley into the wild, whereupon it hit a vehicle in motion, and then proceeded to hit another car or a person, where would the fault lie? Assuming the driver didn't intend to hit it, and assuming they took all reasonable steps for evasive action, where would the fault lie?

Is there any way to remove claims that are closed and weren't my fault?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 05:24 AM PDT

I have been involved in 4 minor fender benders of which none were my fault. I stupidly called my insurance company first to open a claim with them even though they simply closed them and had me call and open a claim with the at faults company. My company progressive basically didnt do anything for me, but now the 4 closed claims seem to be hurting my quoted rates when applying for new insurance. Im in Florida.

At fault accident: Hitting a parked car

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 03:20 PM PDT

Yesterday I backed into my neighbor's car. It was 100% my fault and I felt horrible. He has a huge dent in the body of his car now (luckily it's a two door car and the dent missed the door, so the door can still open and close just fine.) I explained to him what happened and he was very nice and understanding, and today he took the car in to get a couple of estimates. He's not home yet but I hope to talk to him about it tonight.

I was hoping to not report the accident to my insurance as I'm a new driver and I already pay an astronomically high price. I'd rather just pay out of pocket, as I know my neighbor and he is a kind and trustworthy man who I know is not going to scam me. However, my mom says that I should report it to the insurance because if I don't report the accident within 24 hours, they won't pay for it.

I want to wait until he tells me how much the damage will cost. If it's under $1000, I can pay out of pocket but if it's not I will have to bite the bullet and use insurance. Does anyone have any advice? It's a huge dent but I know nothing about cars so I have no idea of a ballpark estimate.

If it's a really high price, could I just wait and say that the accident occurred later, so I'm still in the 24-hour window??

    Edit: I am in Florida

    Short term car insurance

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:47 PM PDT

I'm from California and might need to take a long distance trip to Washington. I fear my car might not make it. Instead, I plan to use my brothers car which is insured under his name. Would I need an additional policy for coverage under my name? If so, is it unheard of to find temporary coverage as this would just be a one time thing.

Companies for entry level GL underwriting? [GA/US]

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:47 PM PDT

I have a friend and former coworker who has five or six years of GL claims adjusting experience at an E&S carrier. He's looking for a new job and wanting to make a change into underwriting but knows he can't start out in E&S and even most standard carriers require some underwriting experience. Can anyone recommend any companies that are willing to train entry level GL underwriters, particularly any in the Atlanta area if you happen to know of any.

I know that several of the larger carriers will recruit from college and train new underwriters, but he's already over 30 and just looking for a career change, and willing to take a pay cut for a couple years to get the experience. Any help would be appreciated.

Auto accident contributory negligence in Virginia

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:10 PM PDT

I was involved in a 3 car accident. The drivers involved were A, B, and C. I was Driver C.

B and C were coming off of a highway- i66W- onto another major roadway- SR 28N- and as such had a dedicated merge lane to get up to speed and safely merge.

The merge lane that B and C were on is on the far right of SR 28. Driver A is in the immediate left lane to the merge lane. A decides to change lanes and come into the merge lane- which makes no sense because this lane ends half a mile down the road- however he does not perform his due diligence in checking to see if he has the space for such a move. As a result A sideswipes B and B came to an abrupt stop which caused C to collide with B's rear.

The police were called and they concluded that A caused the accident but that C could have prevented his part in the accident and as such was issued a citation for "Failure to pay full time and attention". This citation was dropped in court.

Despite C's citation being dropped A's insurance has denied liability to C on the grounds of "Contributory negligence". However A's insurance has admitted liability to B.

I- Driver C- now want to pursue litigation against driver A- the driver who by the police's own account caused the accident- for personal injury and damages. How can I argue against contributory negligence? Is there any precedent to combat it?

As people who work in the insurance industry, what would be your verdict in this, would you deny me or admit liability?

Spouse is talking about taking over my car insurance

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 02:02 PM PDT

So what he says is that I should end my policy, and he becomes insured over my vehicle (cause he drives it maybe more than I do) and that he puts me under as a secondary driver. He suggests this because it can save us money.

I don't really understand how this stuff all works? Is this what some people do? Would I be safe as a driver if I don't have my own policy?

At fault insurance company demands a copy of registration (Canada)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 07:24 AM PDT

    The story so far:

    Edit: Alberta registration.

My grandfather was hit while driving, totaled his cargo van and broke his pelvis. This was in April, he was in the hospital for over a month, and his registration on the vehicle expired a month after the accident. The insurance company is claiming they need a copy of valid registration before they can pay out for the car. The thing is there is no way to get valid registration as they already put the title as salvage on the van. And they took over a month to get any paperwork to us to get this started. And I believe the old registration is in the van, which I told them.

My question is, is this a legit requirement? They are also requiring a bill of sale, which should be enough to transfer ownership.

    Condo insurance question/deductible question

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:59 PM PDT

Hey guys. So I'm a middle unit of a 3 story condo building. I had a water leak come from my upstairs neighbors pipe under her cabinet under her kitchen sink. A pretty decent size hole is now basically over my sink in the ceiling. I know I have to claim that on my own condo insurance as it's damage done to my property, and I haven't even brought this up to the neighbor yet because I wanted some opinions on it first but should I look to get them to pay the deductible I have? Or should that essentially be my responsibility as well? The reason I'm asking is because if it was something that should of been obvious to them that's a no brained they should just offer to cover that deductible but I understand that unless they were under their cabinet and looking for the leak they would never know there is one so I know they weren't really negligent in this case. TIA

Why is my quote cheaper than my actual rate?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:24 AM PDT

So I currently have geico car insurance, but I recently decided to get an online quote from geico using the same parameters as my current geico policy. I was quoted $600 cheaper for the full year. I called geico and they didn't know why the quote was cheaper, is there anything I can do to get this cheaper rate?

    Infinity Insurance - Fraud.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:32 PM PDT

    I am based in California.

On December 25th, I was rear-ended by a driver who is insured by Infinity Auto. I was making a right turn and was hit from behind by a driver who was not paying any attention to the road. The driver got out of his car to make sure I was not hurt, which I wasn't. I felt bad for the guy, he was distraught. I told him insurance would handle it. He gave me his insurance information and I took photos of both of our cars. He didn't ask for my insurance nor did he take any photos of the scene.

I have since learned he's decided to hire a person injury attorney. The story he's telling is completely fabricated and entirely impossible given the damage to my car.

If the other driver was injured or thought I was at fault, you would think he would ask for my insurance and / or take photos? He did neither.

He only decided to hire a personal injury attorney after I filed my claim.

It was an open-and-shut case and this guy, with the help of Infinity Auto Insurance, has turned the situation into a nightmare. I have called Infinity Auto Insurance (and the adjuster) repeatedly since and have yet to hear back from them. Yet, I continue to receive paperwork from Infinity Auto Insurance in the mail stating that I am "unreachable" and they "see no liability on the part of [their] insured."

    It's a joke.

I would like the opportunity to speak with Infinity Auto Insurance and the insurance adjuster, if only I could get them to return my calls. I am absolutely confident that their driver is at fault. The situation is black and white.

After reading every review on this website, I see this is a consistent pattern for them. This company seems to be fraudulent. If necessary, I will have to elevate this to the Better Business Bureau and the appropriate authorities.

What is my recourse in this situation? I might have to elevate to the appropriate state authority but would like to explore what my other options are first.

How to cancel homeowner and auto insurance? Through agent or call the insurance company?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:30 PM PDT

I have been with Nationwide for many years through one "local" agent (I never met him). Over the years, I asked him once every few years to check if my auto and homeowner rates are still the best he could get for me, and he always told me yes.

I sold my house and became a renter. I emailed him with all the changes trying to get an updated quote from him, but have not received it. In the mean time, I decided to shop around myself. First, I have the suspicion that he might not be a broker as I thought he was. Secondly, the broker I found on Yelp and talked to did give me a quote (not with Nationwide) that's substantially lower (for auto as a comparison $1086 vs $1608). Renters insurance is cheap at $148/year.

I'm pretty sure I will cancel my policies with Nationwide. So far, my experience with their customer service has been good. Should I just call Nationwide and cancel with them directly, or do I need to go through my "local" agent?

State Farm vs Liberty Mutual auto and renters insurance

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:11 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I've been researching auto and renters insurance for the past couple of weeks now. I've received quotes from all of the major insurance vendors and I've narrowed it down to State Farm and Liberty mutual.

I'm finding it really difficult to pick between the two since reviews on any insurance company tend to be mediocre at best. If you have some time, would you be able to comment on your claims experience and rate fluctuation for the two? And if there's another company you would recommend, I'm all ears.

    Cheers!

2019 Premium Tax Credit Penalty Surprise. We had no idea that we had an active marketplace insurance policy.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 04:44 PM PDT

My spouse had coverage through healthcare.gov when she was in between jobs in 2018. She obtained a job that provided essential coverage in September 2018. She thought she updated this life event with Healthcare.gov at this time. When completing 2018 tax form through HR Block she was directed to fill out Premium tax credit form 8962 in software. (This form should not have been filled out in retrospect, she thought this info only applied to the previous year) This form requested Advance premium of tax credit. We called Medica, (the insurer) today and they stated her coverage was never termed. We finally managed to figure out how to term her duplicate coverage today by calling Healthcare.gov. We are located in Iowa, USA.

Is there any way to reduce this Excess advance payment penalty based on the fact that my wife had proof of employer sponsored insurance for 2019 (and part of 2018)?

Also-we were married in 2019 and are filing jointly for the first time.

TL:DR: We found at that my spouse had overlapping Health insurance for 20 months when filing for our 2019 tax refund. Is there any way to retroactively terminate this coverage or reduce our repayment of excess advance payment of the premium tax credit?

    Need to Dispute Insurance Claims

    Thank you very much.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t call my homeowners insurance company?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:13 PM PDT

We had high winds less than a week ago. We found two "sheets" of shingle on the ground, and when looking, found bare wood near the peak of the roof on the house. Never had to deal with this before: I'm supposed to call the homeowners insurance, right? Not a roof inspector? I don't want to file a claim unless it's worth it.

Moving insurance from OR -> WA?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:35 AM PDT

I'm moving from Oregon to Washington.

I have a few furniture items ranging from $5-$12k and I want to have them covered for their replacement cost if they become damaged in transit. None are electronics. I'm hiring movers, but their insurance (60c per pound or like $1 per pound for the upgrade) is inadequate. My Farmers renters policy doesn't cover items in transit, nor do they have additional coverage I can purchase.

The total value of what I'm moving doesn't exceed $60k, and nothing is irreplaceable (that is, I can go and buy it again). I don't necessarily need $60k of coverage except in a total loss, but the pieces I'm concerned about run about $40k in total. The move will take one day in total (packing -> move -> unpacking).

What should I be looking to buy and from whom?

Premiums better go down since more people are staying home.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:17 PM PDT

The title pretty much says it all. We should expect premiums to go down with that much less driving. Dont forget this fact. Because everytime you ask why your premiums go up you hear "More drivers on the road" and "Uninsured motorist"
