For those who are in B4 or have moved on, do you have any advice on how to quit properly while still maintaining good relationships? I.e. What time of year? Who did you reach out to to announce your departure? Any last-day tips? Did you tell any work pals beforehand? Did you have a job lined up? What level were you? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:25 PM PDT Has anybody else found working at a big 4 to be totally overblown in terms of how grueling or hard it is? Yes working 60-70 hours a week is less than ideal and can be tiring, but the actual work is not hard and involves minimal levels of critical thinking (hint - figuring out how to merge support files and run a vlookup doesn't count). And yes, this applies to everybody at the staff level regardless of how many times your team claims you are working at the senior level or how complex your client/workpapers are. You can boil down most of the work below manager level at the big 4 to writing simple memos or what is essentially recreating the answer to a test using the key. And if you somehow can't recreate it? You are encouraged to ask for help rather than wasting time trying to figure it out on your own (with the help usually coming from the person that planned it and removed any need to think while completing it by vetting the client work beforehand). As crazy as it sounds, I actually think the job gets part of its reputation from the typical big 4 employees who want to trick themselves or others into thinking they do such meaningful/complex work. They make sure everybody is aware of their the complex models they work with and all of the c-suite meetings they attend (translation - emailing a controller), despite the fact that an intern was likely doing the same exact things just a few months before. But they always seem to conveniently fail to let everyone know things like how "high performers" are literally the ones that display basic grammar skills or the ability to write a concise email to the client. And if they can follow directions without asking a lot of questions or hold a conversation with a client without throwing up on them? We're talking: absolute.top.right.scatter.plot. Moral of the rant: Working at the big 4 is great work experience, but lets not pretend like we are doing anything beyond what most recent college graduates are capable of until at least manager. Also, if you are nervous about starting you internship or job soon, don't be. You literally only need to have a good attitude and ability to follow directions. [link] [comments] | ||

You also have all your current experiences in public accounting - shitty partners, crazy overtime, wack expectations with budgets but also all the positives, maybe fantastic exposure or strong networking opportunities. What would you propose as a solution to any problem you might currently face? Or any suggestions on how to radically change the audit industry? I specifically didn't poof you into a Partner because I feel they're too involved in Audit to really consider the changes that might need to be made to that portion of the firm from an executive perspective - hence you being the CEO. I sincerely believe that audit is an intrinsically important part of any half-functioning economic system - so why insist on these ways that we know result in low staff morale and retention? Meaning of "net" in accounting Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:05 PM PDT Hi there, I am watching a video on stockholder's equity and the instructor stated that contributed capital is the "net" of capital stock and treasury stock. Does that just mean that contributed capital is capital stock minus treasury stock? So does "net" in an accounting sense just mean the difference between? And why would we need to subtract the two? Also, the video says contributed capital is the capital owners have invested into the company. Are investors the owners? [link] [comments] | ||

Feeling overworked. What do I do? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:10 PM PDT Im a third year senior and I've just about had it. I like my job except for the amount of work and lack of compensation for it. I work at a 100 CPA firm. I'm at the main office which has about 70 of the CPAs. Every year so far my total hours (charge and non charge) have increased. I've brought this up and was told "its not about the amount of work, its about the product. Also don't compare yourself to anyone else". I get good reviews, but my compensation is the same as my peers who work hundreds of hours less. This year through busy season I have the second most hours out of all the CPAs in the 3 offices. Yea I have more than the managing partner even. The next closest senior is 116 hours behind me through 4 months. This depresses me. I know I'll never be fairly compensated for this. It feels like all I do is work. And I can't even even bring this up to anyone (not like they would do anything) because I'm not supposed to know this, I have a manager who provides me this raw data when it's just supposed to be verbal about how you compare to your immediate peers. What do I do? I can't work less. My client load is a bunch of tight deadlines (tax, promised delivery dates) and we always have mandatory minimum hours every week, which I sail past to meet these deadlines. The only solution would to be to ask to be removed from some clients which I feel will just kill any compensation and promotion as I will be viewed as a complainer and not a team player. But I'm at the point where my mental well-being is suffering because I just grow angry. I busted my ass to get all my normal 4/15 stuff done by then while my peers worked 40 hours. Now I'm being told I need to work 55 hours starting next week to help with the backlog. [link] [comments] | ||

Both audit associate; salary is trash at both, and it's a move from restrcutruing at a small botique firm (20 partners, 250 staff accross the country). Mainly just looking for insight. I have been a native of Illinois my entire life and I can't lie, the job outlook for CPA's here is huge. However, I am tired of the cost of living, weather, traffic, and many other factors in the big city. I wanted to originally move to Arizona due to the lower cost of living and great weather. However, I see that the big 4 are relatively small in phoenix. I may consider asking for a transfer or consider applying to other companies. Is anyone from phoenix currently at the big four or a national firm? If so, what is the work-life like? Are you traveling out of state to major cities to meet with clients? I am still fortunate to be working and have an opportunity to continue on and get the MAcc. My question is, does the MAcc make a difference? Mgmt Skills: Little Asks Take Up Entire Day Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:47 PM PDT I'm a recently acting Senior and starting to feel overwhelmed. I have 2 staff members testing on processes areas myself and my SC were able to knock out just the 2 of us last year; my entire day is filled with last minute questions and asks from the client, if I don't know the entire answer at the top of my head the moment I am asked, they get all the way up my ass about it like I'm not already working 70 hours and should be the drop dead human dictionary. Like today, I let something sit in our B4 internal tracker because while all the actions for it were completed, deliverables completed, reviewed, due date no where close; something about it bugged me and I wanted to revisit it to fine tune the item to look better for next testing quarter, so I let it appear overdue (once again, internal tracker for our own project). It's a long story about how our reports work. Anyway, it was in my queue, didnt show up on other reports, no one asked me about it until today client two levels above chastised me for using our internal tracker as a personal tool, he said put that on your personal calendar. I hate it when people say put items on your personal calendar, do you know how many items I have on my personal calendar I don't get to because when the pop-up occurs I'm tending to some other last minute bullshit? Most of my day is spent tending to these FIRE drills and last minute asks, I don't get to any of my actual work until after 5 and even then I'm doing as much work as my C's because they can't get the volume done by themselves. I've started dedicating the first and last hour of my days to only reviewing work/going through emails. What other tips are out there to support this sudden new level of all the way up my ass I haven't dealt with before? [link] [comments] | ||
