The partner when a 1st year staff blows up the budget on a project

    Well boys nice knowing ya...

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:46 PM PDT

So I just got a message from my VP requesting a meeting for 4:30 today with our HR director CC'd. Looks like I'm outta here 🤷‍♂️

I'm in the finance department at a large firm in the US, not public accounting.

Wish I could say I was mad but the ironic thing is I do the headcount calculations per department, I always helped trim the fat, now I'm the fat 😭

Just doing a mad scramble to try to save some of my personal templates and models on excel right now before the axe falls.

Edit: so it happened, this was a virtual 1:1 with Vp, hr was cced but didn't attend (it was recorded though). they are doing a haircut of my whole department other than essentials for day to day operations. I will get a lump sum severance for 2 months full pay which is far better than I expected or deserved (if I take a voluntary severance now rather than wait for involuntary layoffs) and health benefits for 3 months. Glad they did me a solid like this. Looks like I can finish the week, haphazardly transition some of my more crucial work, and go into the office on Friday to return Laptop /phone/ monitor. All in all I'm very happy. Since it was a lump sum I might apply for unemployment but I don't I would get it based on my salary :( on the bright side my next check will be fat cause of a ton of PTO that rolled over from PY, final pay period, and bonus for 2019, so alls good. Upper management is cool here, I'll def use them for references. I've sat on the other side of the table before and this is a no harm no foul situation.

When your manager says you only have to work 40 hours this week

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:16 AM PDT

For your own anxiety levels, remember that layoff posts are self-selecting.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:59 PM PDT

r/Accounting is popular with accountants: Remember that people posting on here are not an accurate reflection of the amount of layoffs within the accounting field. People who are laid off are more likely than people who haven't lost their jobs to post about it.

Not saying layoffs aren't happening, but just keep that in mind when you are getting anxious about these posts.

for those of you who are worried

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:22 PM PDT

In 2009 I was laid off from a smallish cpa firm. I was not the first round of layoffs, and people who were at the firm for years, were laid off before me.

I was a experenced staff, but not clever, and was kind of scapegoated. When I got laid off, I asked for all of my reviews, (all were positive, no negative points) and went home. This was the day before thanksgiving.

Obama had extended unemployement, it took me 1 year to find another accounting job, and I live in NYC. I applied everywhere, even department stores, and I couldntget anything. I was living with my parents and I had savings, and with unemployment I was able to get by.

about a year later, I got a job at pwc, asset management. Ive moved on since then, to hire paying positions. I own my own house in NYC, have a family and am a director now.

Did it fuck up my career abit? yea, did it cause me discomfort and stress? yea. But had I not been laidoff, I wouldn't have gone to pwc. I would have stayed at that shitty fucking job.

I want to offer some advice to anyone who is looking for it....

    1) save as much money as you can, I don't care what your boss says, I have had bosses say to me that I had nothing to worry about, with no shame, knowing what was to come. Have a year of emergency funds.I know that people say 6 months is fine, but you know what, having a year, gives you a fucking cushion so your not freaking the fuck out. Even in great times it takes like 2 months minimum to start working at a new job (from applying, interviewing, getting the offer, going thru the paper work and background checks.

    2) If you get laid off, apply for unemployment right the fuck away, the first week is not paid. Figure out your necessary expenses and make a plan. Maybe move back with your parents, get anothe roommate... idk. figureout how long your emergency fund will last you. look into what accounts you have at work that need to be closed (wageworks commuter card, hsa card, 401k) while your within your 2 weeks, get those things squared off) I would say do it the day off, case your going to be numb that day.

    3) Be sad or depressed for a day or 3 and snap the fuck out of it. I know you see people write shit like, oh the low performers were let go. That is not the case, low performers are protected, by someone. SO they get the easy jobs, with the good staff, and their erros are ignored. Its the average performers that do their jobs but dont have protection that need to worry. Who is the manager going to recommend get fired? the girl who sucks his dick during lunch? or that 300lb guy who just does his work and doesnt bother anyone? or the superstar that everyone loves?

4)A mistake that I made, that I wish someone told me. If your unemployed, use this time wisely. Organize your life, make a schedule, and routine. What are your goals that you couldnt get thru due to working the hours we work? Maybe cpa? Maybe weightloss? Maybe you want to be a better tax accountant and know all the codes/rules/forms by heart. Dont do crazy goals that are unreachable, but maybe you can say, I will study for 1 cpa exam every month. THats only 4 months. Make a goal to apply to jobs for 2 hours a day at most. and the rest of the day, study or gym.The goal should be to look back and say, yea it sucks but u knowwhat, I wouldhave never lost100lbs other wise. Or atleast I passed the CPA. Or atleast, I'm a better muslim or whatever you are.

5)IT hurts when you see other working and notyou, and you thingwow do I suck? Keep in mind, I have been inround tables at a big4. once, the partner was like ok everyone is saying their staff is good. Nobody is leaving until I have 5 names to put on a pip. It basically ended up being people who wereaverage at their job but not bad. even some peple that sucked were not on the list, cause they were liked for other reasons (cute, handsome, social, or they were just really good at one engagement, nothing else). And you knowwhat, even if it was you, even if you droped the ball, we do the best we can during that time. I knew a manager that would burn the staff out to the point where they were fucking up on other things. Cause the manager was bad, and 10 rounds of comments since she couldnt catch shit. fuck that bitch. I know someone who is employed cause his dad is a partner. The guy sucks. You cant compete with that protection.

Look anyway, I hope everyone keeps their job, but if something happens remember, use the time wisely, be sad for a week if you want and snap the fuck out of it and accheive some goals. In 5 years you will look back and say it was in my beneift, if u use the time wisely. Ive been fired and laidoff, you just get back up and try to get something. past is the past, and remember things happen for a reason, it means you will find something that better fits you. If you are unemployeed, try to get any job possible in your field, and the second you do, keep looking for better. Don't say I will hold off on something better, cause the longer you are laid off the harder it is to get another position, and to even get back to the routine of going to work.

FYI, the people who fired me, laid me off? THe old company is complete shit now, and they were treated poorly after.

    Big 4 Layoffs Watchout

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 02:37 PM PDT

Ok soo I have been reading a lot of posts about Big 4 layoffs in GTA for KPMG/PWC and just wanted to make a post with some advice for fellow redditors... here goes.

If a random partner schedules a call with you- DO NOT ACCEPT right away. Email them and let them know that you're currently sick and they can reschedule for another time. Just know, they can't fire you when you're sick AND they cant do it over email. Extend this period as long as possible. Start looking for a new job ASAP. At this time, no partner has the time to be scheduling a call with a random staff for 15 mins so you can 99.9% sure that its to fire you. Meanwhile, start transferring all your docs from your computer etc. Your severance 2 weeks are effective from the date you are let go, so prolong that as much as you can.

Seen on Indeed last week. Sometimes you need to hire people so you can fire people...

(CAN) PwC partner just scheduled a quick call with me this afternoon for 15 min. Should I be concerned?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:26 AM PDT

The call just said "Meeting with randoaccount1235".

Assurance, GTA Office, Senior 2, bucket 2 last year.

This is after the CEO mentioned that layoffs won't happen just yet, but given what happened at KPMG yesterday, how concerned should I be?

Edit: Another coworker also got another invite.

Edit2: terminated. Will get my vacation days and severance once I hand in my laptop at the office. It was just the scripted conversation and i my mental health feels shit right now.

Drunk rant from a staff 1

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:44 PM PDT

Before I get into this let me just say I am fortunate to have my job at the moment & am glad I currently have a source of income to pay off my crippling debt of student loans I have amassed. But that aside...

Holy balls I hate B4 public accounting after 7 months of it. Every since the day I started I have absolutely despised it. The people are fine, and I can maybe sit down and do some serious work for about 2 hours, but after that I just start getting that same feeling of pointlessness in what I'm doing akin to how I felt about my assignments in college. But instead I constantly feel behind on work and never get enough done to make the higher ups happy.

Now just trying to shift my mindset that this is just an extension of school/a residency for the next 2 to 3 years/until I get laid off. My higher ups are my professors and I just have to do enough to get a passing grade from them. Not sure if that's the right mindset to have at this point but I could give 2 shits about my "professional development" and extending my "learning opportunities". It all just already seems like a bunch of BS. Just want to get the 2-4 years experience it seems like all industry jobs are asking for then I can't wait to dip. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Is it terrible that I don’t care if I get laid off?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:53 AM PDT

To be clear, I'm not saying that I don't think I'll be laid off. Even though I work for a good company that's paying it's employees when our operations are shut down. I still have to close the quarter from home, so I know I still have a job for at least 2 weeks.

But I've been thinking about it, and I don't think it would be the worst thing. I have savings. I have no kids. I have a mortgage, which is my only debt. Honestly a break sounds good right about now. I've been feeling blah about this profession in general lately, so this may be where these feelings are coming from. I've got 8 years experience (half of which were in public), CPA, etc.

Idk. Maybe a part of me is hoping to get laid off so I can refocus. I'm not sure I can handle 30 more years of this. But I also don't know what I'd want to do other wise.

I know, there are people who would kill to have a job right now, and I feel terrible about that.

Was going to start in September. However these layoffs are a bit worrying, especially because my offer was for a firm that just laid off people in the past couple of days.

Something to think about when you hear news about layoffs at accounting firms

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:27 AM PDT

We have all seen news stories about layoffs at various accounting firms. During a slow time this would probably cause a good deal of anxiety.

One thing to keep in mind is how transferable your accounting skills are to different industries. Accountants are in a much better position to transition industries from one that will be highly impacted by a downturn in the economy (airlines, hotels, cruises etc) to one that may benefit (healthcare, retail groceries etc)

Be proactive in getting your resume ready and have your references lined up. Also take this time to evaluate the types of jobs that you will be looking for.

Can anyone think of a harmless prank to pull while working remotely? I was thinking maybe a couple of us pretend to our senior that some work papers disappeared from where they should be and we can't find them.
