I feel my parents are getting ripped off on a kitchen repair job...any advice?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 10:13 PM PDT

So long story short my parents found water coming up under the floor in their kitchen. They discovered that the water line running to the coffee maker had like a pin tip hole in it and had been leaking/spraying water behind the dishwasher for a while...dry wall all rotted and moldy.

So basically insurance agrees to repair it and thus this now month long endeavor that's not even done yet begins. Naturally my mom asked if she could upgrade anything in the repair/replace process...insurance said "Sure, if you wanna pay for it elsewise we're just under obligation to repair things to exactly how they were". Alright, kinda sucks but fair enough, right? They're there to repair, not replace.

    Well so far:

    • The wooden subfloor under the dishwasher is all warped from water damage...they didn't replace this, why? Who knows.

    • Parents were charged $5,000 for "rebuilt cabinets" in which all they did was rip out the old ones, replaced a few pieces of the wood that had mold and repainted them and reinstalled. Didn't even replace the old worn down rollers, knobs, hinges, nothing. EXACT same cabinets plus new cheap ass paint and a few pieces of compressed wooden board. This costs $5,251 some how.

    • Counter tops originally were just that sort of laminate but they were nice and had seemless beveled edges/rear border and a nice texture to them. New counter tops are literally the cheapest thing ever. All the edges are square with flat cut smooth cheap as shit feeling laminate. Now where near "exactly how they were". To me seamless edges is a feature, not a preference.

    • The house has hard flooring flowing seamlessly through the whole house. The lock together nice plastic stuff - even the people tearing it up mentioned how nice it was. Now this is something they paid good money for and a major selling point to a house. Insurance wants to put threshholds everywhere and just redo the kitchen. Again, how is this "exactly how it was"?

Like, these people aren't a goddamn CHARITY...my folks PAY to have INSURANCE...I could understand the cut corners if it was like a church repairing it for free because they couldn't afford it and shit...that's fine...but they're paying money for this and I don't think it's right that all these obvious cheap ass corners are being cut if not problems being outright ignored.

Oh wait, they are doing us one favor...they charishably agreed to repaint the top cabinets to match the new colored bottom ones...but ya know...only the outside. Inside we'd have to pay for.

Any ways if anyone has words of wisdom, good or bad, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

Roof replacement, including interior estimate. The ACV - deductible = claim check. What is the total we will have to pay?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 02:48 PM PDT

I just wanted to make sure I understand.

RCV for the roof = $11k RCV for the interior = $3k

    Total RCV = $14k

ACV for the roof is $9k ACV for interior = $3k

    Total ACV = $12k ($1k deductible) = Claims check.

    Depreciation = $2k

Why is the RCV and ACV values different for the roof? They both include overhead, profit, and tax.

My understanding for ACV is the fair market cost to get the work done. RCV is the value of it after the recovered depreciation. Just want to make sure I understand everything. Thank you!

Having trouble renting a car due to lack of credit card....

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:51 AM PDT

They won't allow me to pay cash to cover the access or even put it on my debit card.

So I have had the idea of a friend renting a car and adding me as an additional driver. My friend will drive out of the airport and then I will take over from there and the car back a month later.

Worst case scenario is that I have an accident a long distance away from where my friend is based........would I be covered?

Will Cigna Open Access Plan Short Term Disability work right after it kicks in?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:30 PM PDT

It starts on 4/1 along with my other employer insurance. We're in the enrollment period and transitioning over from the old insurance (which I didn't have, but I think it was also Cigna) with the old company and just got bought out by a new company. Now we're getting their version of the insurance.

I have STD and LTD through them, as well as hospital indemnity, Gap insurance for the deductible, etc. It is about $160 bi-weekly for everything.

I have Gastritis (inflamed stomach) with no specific diagnosis as to why. An Upper Endoscopy was done and the biopsy was negative for cancer and H. Pylori. My stomach is likely swollen due to my sympathetic nervous system overreacting because of lots of sleep issues that haven't been diagnosed yet. I had a sleep study in 2018 that showed over 100 RERAs in just under 3 hours. I was negative for sleep apnea, however. I don't even have a Gastritis diagnosis from my GI doc, technically.

With all of this virus stuff going around, I'm at a higher risk due to compromised immune system. I also feel like utter crap most days at work. I'm shaky, my stomach hurts, I get chest pains (probably the Gastritis), dizziness, heart palpitations, etc. I've been to a heart doc. Healthy heart.

My job has recently furloughed lots of employees. I've been moved to a new department with lots more lifting of heavy stuff all day. If my GI doctor wrote a letter requesting Short Term Disability, would they allow me to use that right after it kicks in? I've looked at our booklet for the insurance and I don't see a waiting period. It only pays 60% of pay, so up to $1,352/month, which is way less than what I normally make. I need the time off for doc appointments and to heal my stomach that can't heal with all of the lifting. I can't file for unemployment because I am limited in the job duties due to my health issues.

    Penske Limited Damage Waiver (LDW)

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 08:46 PM PDT

    Hello all,

Picked up a rented 26' truck from Penske for a 440-mile one-way move and the person driving the truck for me noticed on the paperwork the LDW is declined which I know I accepted but in the midst of comparing rates with other trucks online, I must've completed the checkout process with declining the insurance somehow.

Is there any possible way to add this on even if I've already picked up the truck? It's a brand new 2020 truck and don't really see how they let me off the lot with no insurance/coverage for the vehicle.

I'm going to call in the AM and see what happens, just stressing after spending two whole days loading the truck and now the driver won't move the truck without LDW coverage, understandably so.

Any quick insight would be awesome!! TIA

Backed into someone like a moron, need help determining my most financially viable option.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 07:45 PM PDT

I live in Ontario. A 9th gen Impala has been parked adjacent to my driveway almost a week. Today I finally got complacent enough and didn't check my mirrors before backing out. Used to not having to check, however its a street people park on commonly. Considering that fact and after the amount of close calls I've had, it is beyond me why I didn't clue in. Hit the driver side door and the dent is pretty gnarly.

My car only has some scuffs, not worried about it. The only damage to the other vehicle is the dented door. I know I'm supposed to report it within 24 hours, but I want to eliminate any better options. I was sick for a week and couldn't work, now I can't pay rent and the extra insurance would be ... bad. I could mention that and see if they're cool having a busted door (doubt it), if not offer $500 in cash and tell my landlord I need a rain-check till next month.

As far as I know if I contact my insurance company I won't have to pay the deductible and will just have to deal with the extra interest. Maybe better than coughing up 500 big ones, but I want to try and keep a clean driving record, too. (I'm also really fucking mad at myself and would like to try and salvage some of my pride).

Car insurance – incorrect info, letting them know without getting in trouble...?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 11:44 AM PDT

When I took out my car insurance policy, I said I was a named-driver on another vehicle, because I thought my Dad had put me on his car – found out my dad never actually did because he thought it was 'too expensive' – luckily I've never driven his car so no harm done.

I feel I should let my insurer know that I'm not a named driver, but I don't want it to look like I lied to them at the beginning. If I phone to say I'm 'no longer a named driver on a vehicle' are they likely to inquire when this came into effect?

    Thanks.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 05:40 PM PDT

Hi all, i have a question regarding my insurance rates. My vehicle got hit by a piece of debris on the road that was kicked up by a truck. It hit the front left bumper of my car causing some of the paneling to pop out and a small section of the bumper did get cracked. If i file a claim will my rates go up?

Anyone know anywhere that offers pizza delivery insurance for teens?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 01:53 PM PDT

My current car insurance won't cover teen delivery drivers, I would be working for a major chain and they do not have a company policy. I have a clean record but I'm having trouble finding places that offer it. Any help is appreciated!

Home Insurance For A Property I Don't Own - Should I Do Something?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 03:06 PM PDT

Last year, I "sold" our family home to my ex-wife in our divorce settlement. I moved out and she lives there with her affair partner.

However...I'm still listed as an interested party on the home. I received a letter from her insurance agent (USAA) noting that I'm an interested party on the home. I also use USAA for a bunch of stuff.

    Questions -

    1. What does this mean to be an interested party by her insurance carrier on her home?

    2. Should I do anything? Why or why not?

    3. If anything happens to her home (e.g. hail, tornado), then do I somehow get involved?

I could just call USAA and ask the insurance agent but they tend to have red tape about what they can discuss with whom. In other words, a wasted call that would throw a red flag to my unstable ex-wife.

    Rental Car Woes

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 10:19 AM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. I recently made a two location, same day pick up and drop off with Enterprise. The drive was entirely uneventful. I reached the drop off Enterprise location, hoping to return the car to an employee as the original location had warned me to. However, their hours were shifted due to the ongoing coronavirus situation in the US, so I had to do an after hours drop off.

Naturally, the next day I saw charges for $150 and $500 on top of the pending $200 dollar deductible. My email from enterprise stating "passenger fender" as the reason. To check out the damage that required an instant $850 dollar charge, I went back to the rental location to find the same car still parked there: undamaged driver fender and the claimed damage.

The woman working at the rental car place told me that the damage is "blindingly" obvious. Like the first thing she saw when she got to work and thought, "wow that's a doozy, gonna need to take care of that." Then, presumably the manager came out, and basically told me there's nothing they can do and that I should call the original branch. Am I crazy (or being gaslit) that the damage is either not there or incredibly hard to see? Is there anything I can do?

Unfortunately, I didn't take a before picture of the car because I got rushed through the checkout process and didn't see any damage. These are dumb excuses and the lesson is to always take a before picture.

Edit: additional footage of "damaged" area: https://imgur.com/pVdxVlC

    short term life insurance

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 01:37 PM PDT

What is it like to apply for first time life insurance as a <65 individ while the coronavirus peaks? Does the virus count as "natural causes" or are the insurers already denying the complications related to the virus (some companies are already using *force major* clauses to avoid payout)

Will we just be flat out denied life insurance? Or is this futile because no clinic will perform a non-lifesaving procedure in the next 3 months as part of an insurance application? If we can apply without a checkup, have the current rates already spiked to account for the increased risk of death due to COVID19?

And do policies have a min term before they are active? Can they also be canceled, say after the infection rate drops and death rates go down?

    Travel insurance

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:05 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

So basically i booked a trip to Venise on the 2th of May. As you probably know with the current situation I will not go. The airline with wich I booked refuses to reimburse, give a credit or allow any change of date for this trip. They have cancelled all trip until the 30th of april but they say they cannot give me a credit until they cancel trips in May. I have a ilness cancelation coverage with them and I would like to know what kind of ilness is covered. Does a sudden gastroenteritis 1 day before the trip enough to cancel my trip and get a refund? Or does these insurance only cover very serious ilness.

Insurance check for roof repair made out to me and the contractor

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 08:18 AM PDT

I have been in the process of repairing the roof, finally, the bank released the last check but unlike the first check which was made out to me and the Mortgage company name this one was made out to both the Contractor and me.

Now the contractor is telling me that they charge me 10% of the amount of the check just for endorsing the check. Has anyone ever had this problem?
