    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Feb 25, 2020

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 12:07 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

JPMorgan announces big moves to support environment, including ending loans to coal industry

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 05:09 AM PST

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/25/jpmorgan-says-it-will-fund-200-billion-in-sustainable-deals-this-year.html

JPMorgan Chase announced a pledge to facilitate $200 billion in environmental and economic development deals and will pull back from advising and lending to the coal-mining industry.

Apart from helping to fund new climate and economic inclusion projects around the world, the bank said it was taking new steps to accelerate the transition to clean energy.

On top of stepping back from advising companies that get most of their revenue from coal extraction, JPMorgan said it will put restrictions on financing new coal-fired power plants, phase out "credit exposure" to the industry by 2024 and will stop funding new oil and gas drilling projects in the Arctic.

Please try to remember you bought shares in the business and the company. You didn’t buy numbers on a screen.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 11:13 AM PST

Warren Buffett's best quote is "invest in the business not the stock" and in these scary times it's important that you remind yourself that you are legitimately owning a company.

By far my largest holding is Costco.

I will continue to buy Costco during the virus fears, during Not QE, and long after all financial instability. The business is completely sound.

If you find yourself refreshing your portfolio a bunch, just ask yourself, do you want to own this business in 2024?

If the answer is yes, close the tab, if it's no, sell.

Did the stock market get hit hard with the ebola virus as well?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 10:24 AM PST

Relatively new to trading in the market and am experiencing my first major dip in the market. Im wondering if there was any other virus that hit the market hard and how long did it take to recover? Is there any stocks I should be keeping an eye on? Im still building diversification in my portfolio which i have focused tech and retail so far with a handful of etf's. What sector should I focus on with this virus?

What's next after the 1000 drop

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 03:27 AM PST

Yesterday the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 1032 points down. This was the third biggest point decline in the history of the index, just one point less than the second biggest drop registered in February 2018 and 143 point away from the largest point decline that also happened in February of 2018. Many people are asking what is next after a bad day like yesterday. There are two things to consider when evaluating your next investment and trading moves.

Did the circumstances that caused the plunge yesterday change, will they change and what effect is priced in?

The major reason behind the sharp decline yesterday is the growing fears of the economic impact the Coronavirus might have on the global economies. And unfortunately nothing really drastically changed from yesterday, if anything the fears are only growing. I am currently in Europe and people around are talking about buying up food supplies in case there are food shortages, they are canceling trips and so on. So to answer the first part of that question, no nothing has changed for the better, if something only for the worse.

Will something change is a good question and my understanding is that the only significant thing that can make a big difference is for pharmaceutical companies to find a vaccine. Since we are not talking anymore about the number of total patients in China, instead we are looking for infected people in other countries, there is a big chance these numbers grow and all of this is negative news for the market. So no positive changes in the near future (and by this I mean the next couple of days).

Lastly, even dew we dropped more than 1000 points, since the market was hovering around record highs, there is still ways down this correction can go. The P/E on the Dow Jones was 21.76 yesterday, and this is with the current earnings estimates, if they take a hit like it is projected, this ratio will go up and to get it back down, there has to be a correction in the prices of stocks.

The second question is to see what happens after big down moves at the market and your time horizon.

After every big correction like the one we saw yesterday, we normally see a rebound. But that rebound can happen today, or it can happen a month from now. This is why the second part of this question is more important. What is your time horizon? If you are looking to trade and make fast money in the big market moves, going short has a lot bigger probability of making you money than buying right now. If you are looking to invest in a long term commitment, because you believe people are still drinking Coke products and people are still eating at McDonalds, than this could be a good time for you to buy the company you have been looking for at a slight discount.

Our recommendation to the traders is: short in the next couple of weeks and hopefully make money with this correction. To the investors, hold off for a little longer and invest after this whole thing clears. The downside at the moment is far bigger than the upside. This is our opinion and we could be wrong, but it is my job to put it out there for you and only you can make the right decision.

I have a problem with trading with emotions.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 09:10 AM PST

I get happy when a stock rises and don't want to sell or i get greedy. I chase stocks and buy in to late. And sell to late. Often just breaking even. With TSLA for example I bought 2 shares at 800 ea. Then the stock dropped so I bought another share around 765 lowered my Cost basis to 788. I held those 3 shares for a while. Planned on going long saw 900 and 940 and still held. Held through a dip and a recovery. But today the stock tanked. I couldn't afford to avg down so I though I'll sell and just buy in lower. I hesitated until it hit 788, my CB. I sold basically breaking even. It immediately took off to 800 again. Then had a run up and I bought 4 shares at 807. I'm clearly trading with emotion here. Basically gambling. What are some ways I can start trading smarter

Which long term stocks to buy right now ?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 10:15 AM PST

    Hi,

I currently hold 6x AAPL, 10x MSFT and 75x SPCE. I plan to hold all my stocks longterm. Now that the market is low, should I increase my holdings in one of them or add other stocks like V, MA, AMD, DIS, NVDA ...?

I also have World ETF's but would like to spice it up with shares.

    What do you think?

    Thanks !

    How low can we go?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 11:43 AM PST

Everyone's portfolio is down. What are you're guys' buy goals and price targets with this dip? Personally I am in it for the long haul, so this dent in my portfolio will pass in the coming years. I am setting personal goals to buy more MSFT at $150, V at $170, AMZN at $1800, DIS at $115, AMD at $40.

"Shorting" on stocks this week? Is anyone selling their shares and then re-buying as the dip continues?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 01:51 PM PST

I don't think I can short through Questrade.

However, say I believe that the stock market will continue to decline for the coming few days, at least in this week.

Would it be a good idea for me to sell some of my shares today and buy them back on, say, Friday?

I see a lot of people want to "buy in" to the dip and I suppose this is the same mentality of knowing "when" to buy in - I basically want to sell ASAP and buy back once I think the market is turning back up.

    Is anyone selling their shares?

Should i even be slightly worried about Tech stocks dropping so hard?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 01:32 PM PST

Seems like the long term impact of this correction will bounce back within the year based on how fast these stocks usually grow

Why is GWRS down 5%? Water utilities affected by corona virus? lol

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 12:32 PM PST

Why is GWRS down now 8%? Makes no sense. Loading up on it today. This virus will likely push the fed to lower rates which will directly increase the profit margins of water utilities. Water use does not go down in a recession or due to a virus. Lower bond yields will also increase the worth/demand for the utilities dividend.

Are big tech companies like Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, etc, worth the buy with the dip cause by the coronavirus?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 11:40 AM PST

I have been wanting to get into big tech stocks for awhile now, always been a bit hesitant because of the price range, but with the dip happening both yesterday and today, I'm Starting to think it might be worth it. Technology is not my strong point however, do these stocks still have room for growth? I know Apple surely does, but fb and Microsoft?
