U.S. stock futures pointed to sharp declines on Wall Street at the open on Monday as the number of coronavirus cases outside China surged, stoking fears of a prolonged global economic slowdown from the virus spreading.

As of 7:10 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were down 686 points, indicating a drop of 679 points at the open. Dow futures were down more than 800 points earlier in the session. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were down by 2.3% and 2.5%, respectively.

Found an old AOL Time Warner stock certificate that I got from my grandmother for Christmas 18 years ago. Do I still own something or is it not worth pursuing?

It's only two shares. I can't figure out what happened to them.

For those thinking of investing now for the long term...

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:13 PM PST

I've seen quite a few posts today asking if they should start investing.

This reminds me of a terrific story of Bob, the worlds worst timer of investing.

    Story here: https://awealthofcommonsense.com/2014/02/worlds-worst-market-timer/

For those that are busy, here are the lessons from Bob's story:

If you are going to make investment mistakes, make sure you are biased towards optimism and not pessimism. Long-term thinking has been rewarded in the past and unless you think the world or innovation is coming to an end it should be rewarded in the future. As Winston Churchill once said, "I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else."

Losses are part of the deal when investing in stocks. How you react to those losses is one of the biggest determinants of your investment performance.

Saving more, thinking long-term and allowing compound interest to work in your favor are your biggest accelerants for building wealth. These factors have nothing to do with picking stocks or a complex investment strategy. Get these big things right and any disciplined investment strategy should do the trick.

What does it mean when a stock like $SPCE is in the green in a day like this?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:57 AM PST

In a day like today where there is so much fear, $SPCE is in the green.

Why are investors willing to short other stocks but not this one?

    What does this mean?

    Just luck?

Is nothing going to stop this stock until investors finally see their money send people to space?

Is FOMO the strongest tool in the market?

Are people starting to think we are doomed with this coronavrius, and we need to start exploring new habitable planets? Are they aware this is not what Virgin Galactic is doing?

SPCE Virgin Galactic Earnings Tomorrow After the Bell

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:18 PM PST

Quite the turn around today from 9% down to green, will be interesting to see what the stock does tomorrow. I've been bullish on the way up, but this market cap worries me a bit, revenue doesn't correlate cap but then again it's tough to go against momentum stocks.

    Time to buy?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 08:49 AM PST

I have to imagine the next week or so is a great time to buy. This coronavirus scare will be over at some point (hopefully in the next couple months). Market should correct at that point. Thoughts???

What does Super Tuesday mean for stocks?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:28 AM PST

Its kinda a given that trump will be the republican nominee but the democratic nominee is iffy. If it seems that bernie is the front runner, will stocks most likely go down?

I still have a lot to learn

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:31 AM PST

I bought about $1200 worth of TSLA, AMD, NVDA, BABA, and SPCE last Thursday because I thought it was just a dip day. I also bought MSFT at an ATH of $186 a few weeks ago.

I've only been investing for a few weeks now but have been watching the market for a few months and have been seeing all these companies constantly hitting ATH's so I really wanted to get started to take advantage of the current market growth. I don't plan on selling as most of these buys were for long term holds anyway, and I knew the only way for me to really start learning was to just start, but it taught me to pay closer attention to why things are in the red than to just write it off as a dip day. Also I should have figured it was more than that since EVERYTHING was in the red, but again, it's all a learning curve. I'm not playing with emergency money and I have my Roth dedicated to a simple three fund portfolio.

I'm just hoping that a year from now I'll look back and just be glad I got started and bought in, regardless of what the price was at the time!

    All Red except Gold

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 06:58 AM PST

Right now since everything is going down I thought it was a good time to invest in gold (HMY). I Don't know how long gold will keep rising but I think that any gold will definitely rise today at least.

Okay, so what is on everyone's shopping list this week?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:30 AM PST

Since we are going to fall sharply for the time being, time to grab some deals. What are you looking at?

I'm thinking DIS, AMZN,TOT, MSFT, ENPH, and maybe even some SPCE just in case that goes bananas for some reason.

Should I invest in stocks right now?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:42 AM PST

I'm new to investing in stocks. I have about $90 worth of stocks right now, so not a lot. But I'm curious if I should splurge on stocks since everything in the market is down? I know they're all down because of the coronavirus and was thinking I should buy a lot while they're cheap. Should I expect to see an upward trend later? Or is there a way to tell? A strategy in investing?

We choose to pick individual stocks over ETFs in an attempt to beat the market, how has your portfolio done in comparison?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 04:58 PM PST

According to Investopedia the average investor does not have a very good chance of beating the market. Meaning the average investor will mostly likely underperform and take on additional risks.

That being said, how have you done when compared to the total performance of the S&P500.

Here are the performances of some of the more popular S&P500 ETFs as of today:

    5 Years:

    • SPY - 58.07%
    • VOO - 58.41%
    • IVV - 57.93%

    1 Year:

    • SPY - 19.9%
    • VOO - 19.87%
    • IVV - 19.77%

Looking at my current profile. My 1 year performance is at 22%. My 5 year performance doesn't exist as I started around the Q2 in 2015, but it's all time performance is at around 66%. I'd say I'm okay with how my portfolio has slightly outperform the SP500, but I'd say it's marginal. Albeit we are witnessing one of the largest bull runs in recent history.

    Will CLL bounce back?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 02:06 PM PST

Carnival cruise lines are now at their worst level in five years, no one in their right mind would take a cruise right now - sess pools of virus mongers that they are. Technically, though is this a dead cat bounce opportunity? Upside has a gap from the $30 range to the $50 range... which is .... tempting. Thoughts??

A piece of advice for someone who started investing in stocks last week.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:20 AM PST

I'm a 24yo that's finally getting some good money due to my job and last Tuesday I put part of my savings in the US stock market. It wasn't that much money (4K) and I can live without it, but it still hurts to jump on board right before the ship starts to sink. I jumped in for the long run, and I know it should go back around eventually. I also know this is the best time to buy but I can't afford to put more of my safety money to buy more without knowing if it will take several months or maybe even a couple of years(?) to get it back.

So far I'm down only by $200, which is quite ok. My question is: If you were me, would you sell, afford this tiny loss and wait for the market to dive even more and buy-in again? Or would you just forget about this money, hope that Corona virus doesn't kill everyone and wait until the market is back up?

Which stocks or industries to invest in as coronoavirus continues to have a a widespread impact on people and businesses?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 06:16 AM PST

Global stock markets plunged today and I strongly believe that this is just the start. I want to hedge my current positions as this pandemic grows and continue to invest as it has a greater impact on the stock market in the coming month.
