    Stocks - 2020-2029 Time Capsule

    2020-2029 Time Capsule

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 06:44 PM PST

Just like the title states. You all wanted this, so you better fill this post with well-documented™, highly-rational™, things-that-aren't-Tesla™ predictions for the decade.

I'll make best efforts to ensure this post is preserved until 2030 but relatively hard to find until then, like a real-life time capsule! Probably hide/delete the post until January 1, 2030. Various sticky notes will be left in the mods' office to ensure the people managing this place in 2030 unearth this very high quality post for your reflection.

This post will be locked and buried on February 28. The quarterly portfolio sticky (posted in December 2019) will be unstickied in favor of this post until then. The new quarterly portfolio sticky will replace this post in March when the automod posts it.

    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Feb 06, 2020

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:06 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

The average holding period for a stock is only about 8 months; What is your longest holding stock and how much is the gain?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 07:13 AM PST

The average holding period for stocks is about 8 months and I'm sure its going to lessen even more with zero fees and fractional shares. I know I would have benefited more if I had held on longer to almost all of my holdings. Everyone says they are long term investors, but what is your longest holding stock and how much is the gain?

    SpaceX IPO

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 10:30 AM PST

    • SpaceX (SPACE) is likely to spin off its satellite-based broadband business and pursue an IPO, according to COO Gwynne Shotwell. • Shotwell made the comment today at a small investor conference in Miami, according to Bloomberg. • Last year, Morgan Stanley set a bull case valuation of $120B on SpaceX (Starlink satellite and rocket business). • A lofty valuation for SpaceX could also give a boost to Virgin Galactic (NYSE:SPCE).

I think this would be interesting for people who already have Virgin Galactic in their portfolio

Buffett has said that if he dealt with smaller numbers, he’d be able to beat the S&P easily. How would he exactly do that?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 11:54 AM PST

I understand that Berkshire can now only invest in equities that actually move the needle at their scale.

For example, their current holding total is worth $256B. So to even create a 1% holding, they'd have to invest at least $2.6B.

Therefore, Buffett has a way more limited pool of investments. Which is why Buffett has gone on the record to say he'd do extremely well if he was able to purchase anything, like we can.

With that said, how exactly would he do that? What about his process and thinking could guarantee that he'd do better than the S&P?

Should I sell NFLX or NVDA?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 11:58 AM PST

I have to sell one or the other or both. I need to move money from stocks to bonds. I've had both of these for a while so I will take a nice profit no matter which one I sell. But as far as future growth goes, I want to keep the best one and sell the other. Or I could sell half of each. What does Reddit say?

    Draftkings / DEAC

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:25 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm researching about Draftkings and their potential company to merge to be public, DEAC.

How is your experience with DK? I love the fantasy sports league and deceived to pay some entry fees to test by myself.

I like the interface of the site and the app. It is stable but I have not been played in the peak season so not 100% sure.

The company and the industry is profitable b/c 1. Cash business 2. Have good liceansings with the major sport leagues 3. Highly online orientated. 4. Market share is strong.

My concerns are 1. Will people pay money to play if they can get it for free? But no prize. 2. Can they expend their business to the international level? 3. Can they really merge with three companies? Risk to have the deal breaker.

The stock is trading around 13.50 - 14.50 for now. What do you think?

What's the best way to keep up with daily market developments?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:42 AM PST

For example I missed out on the BIIB news yesterday. Ideally I'd just want one central feed to keep up with market developments, whether that be composed of multiple sources or not. I just don't wanna have to scour several sites and dig through a ton of duplicate stories and differing site designs.

What does everyone use? Curated RSS feed from several sites? Something like Seeking Alpha? Are Stocktwits and Trading View an goo

How do warrants work for you're small time retail investor?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:24 PM PST

I haven't encountered these very often, but I'm interested in DEAC. It is a SPAC and on Schwab by can pick DEACU or DEACW. U means 1/3 warrants, W is 100% warrants. So let's say it comes time to exercise the warrants. Let say you have the right to buy stock at $10, does that mean your shares are really costing $14 ($10 sp + $4 warrant) or will it only cost you the difference between the SP and warrant ($6)?

What is the advantage of owning a warrant over say an option? Or just buying class a shares right off the bat?

    Oil Stocks

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:31 PM PST

Have 30K in SLB stocks, down 35% (45K). I have been holding for the last 5 years.

This is about 50% of my savings. Bought as a part of ESSP.

Should I sell all and move my money to ETFs (VTI/QQQ)? I do not see this stock going anywhere.

    Thank you all.

Should I put down on $JAN?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:16 PM PST

I am fairly new to stocks and investing in general, so I apologize beforehand if this question is obvious in answer.

I saw $JAN had a great day today due to their manufacturing agreement. It topped at $6.38, yet has dipped down to $4.05 at the moment. Would it be smart to purchase 25-50 shares in it as a penny stock (I hope I used that right)?
