    Pizza store owners?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:37 PM PST

Hey guys I have been reading and learning from all of you so thank you for the insights keep giving us newbies wisdom.

I am in Canada and I work at Rogers. I am 22 years old and I finished at UofT last May. I have always wanted to open a pizza store that's quick and easy.

I would like to buy an already established one then rebrand or fix all the issues

I was wondering to all current and former pizza store owners what are the positives and what are the negatives to owning one?

What should I watch out for? How's the profit margins? Little tips and tricks I can use?

I would like to start with this then carry forward. What advice do you guys have ?

Really passionate about turning this idea into a business but feel unsure of my capabilities: making mini-documentaries for terminally ill people.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 05:00 AM PST

    Hi all

Been lurking and following this sub for a while. Really in admiration of all of you who put yourselves out there and making a stand to create somthing for yourself.

Over the last year I have had an ever increasing urge to make a small business out of making small documentaries for terminally ill people. Aka Legacy videos.

Somthing for them to leave for friends/family/loved ones. A chance to express thoughts and feelings about Thier life, regrets, accomplishments.

And perhaps, if the opportunity arises. Touch upon somthing deeper within them. Somthing that goes beyond Thier personal identity. That somthing deep within us all, that we can all relate to.

I'm a recovering drug addict + an episode of psychosis/depression/anxiety. Been clean for 3 years now. Working part-time in autism care & support.

Self care is (and has to be) my first priority. When I'm not on top of it I easily slide into unhealthy patterns and negative States of mind. Still struggle with achieving healthy sleep routines.

Some years back I studied broadcast- production at college. Got the basics of making a documentary. Though still a lot of room for improvement in production quality.

A year ago I started volunteering for a charity that provides emotional support to terminally ill people. I was put through extensive training and feel quite confident in creating a safe space for people to open up.

I am very passionate about making mini documentaries for terminally ill people. But I feel quite unsure about if I can actually turn it into a business. I have often had a habit of making myself small.

It's almost as if I look at you guys on this sub and I am in admiration of what you have achieved, but then there is this quiet little voice in the back of my head saying "but you could never be like them". It's very subtle, but it does come out in my actions... Or rather, lack of actions.

I struggle with self discipline and routine. Being employed is easy in this regard. I turn up late I get fired. But with my own project... 'there is always tomorrow'.

Can you guys/gals offer any advice on starting a business like this, the self discipline, the self confidence?

Thankyou for any advice, and thankyou for all that you share on this sub

    Sourcing cruelty free raw materials

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 03:56 AM PST

    Hi

I have been working on a handmade product line for weeks now. It involves sewing pure wool felt because it feels better and lasts a lot longer than plastic felt.

Anyway, i was researching the benefits of felt but so many resources say that wool is a highly cruel industry, almost as bad as the meat industry. Apparently there are extensive incidents of animal abuse while shearing etc.

And then there are so many COUNTER resources saying it's all propaganda by PETA etc.

As someone who feels very strongly about animal welfare, this has left me very confused. I feel like my brand's foundation is in shambles.

I guess I'm looking for opinions on whether wool really is the evil material they say it is. Or am I over thinking the whole thing?

    Thanks

Quick Question on Mental Health during the "bad" times running a small business

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 11:46 PM PST

    Hey Guys...

Many of us here all slogging it out... and good luck to each and every one of you.

I'm actually here seeing if anyone can chime in with some guidance... I've had a very, very good 8 or 9 years running a small business from Melbourne Australia. Honestly - its been great... been able to work from home, watch my children grow - build and invest in property and really have a great run.

We're not HUGE - so don't get the wrong impression... but just been able to make some really good money for small business, great profit and great lifestylle.

I know many of you are working very hard, each and every day... So I feel a bit privileged to even write this - but I'm very, very grateful for the past 10 years... and i hope many of you find it too.

But with that said though - (FYI I work in a signage industry and we're really starting to show signs of going decline. Digital is taking over - always knew it would.) with business going slow - and so rapidly, it's really taken a hit on my mental space.

We've gone from consistent work... to almost nothing at all... and my area is one that being a dying industry, the more and more I work on it - it may be to no avail.

And just quickly, before you say "oh just move with the time" - I've actually been doing this sooooo long that no, I don't want to get into the digital side of things, or even really stay in this field at all. (Advertising/signage)

So yeah... its a really funny place to be in... as all our friends/family looking outwards in think that we've got it made (and we had)... but its really changing.

We're used to X coming in and really not getting it.

I'm again lucky to have a bit of a nest egg to see things through... but I'm really faced with starting all over again... and its just so overwhelming.

I don't know what, where, how and so on... and the idea at my age (38 with 2 kids and a wife) - when I started this business 10-12 years ago, I was child free- fit, energetic, full of life and so on.

I really feel like I'm complaining here... and again, super, super grateful for my life and those around me.... but damn, this is really hard at the moment.

So any heads up from anyone out there that had EVERYTHING in front of them... than to have it fall over, I'd love some pro tips.

Thanks guys - really appreciate it

Just got 1099-C that we have no clue who it's from.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 03:36 PM PST

My company just got two notices in the mail. One was a 1099-c and another was a request form for taxpayer identification. I had to lookup just what a 1099-c was. Charge off Looks like they are listing $1,592.31 from 7/23/2019. They have some loan number on the bottom.

They only have our company name and for our tin 00000000.

No such charge offs exist, no clue what the loan number is and we didn't owe anyone last year or had any debt forgiveness. Not even in the smallest chance this happened unless somebody used our company name for something and somehow the bill collectors never contacted us.

So I'm thinking scam for information. They list Retail Finance Credit Services and then also c/o Synchrony Bank. No clue who either of those are. 1-800-552-5239 phone number to call.

I can just call and see if it's a fishing attempt. Or I could just ignore it as they only have our company name and address and no FID number. Anything to look out for?

Feedback: Managing Late and No Payments Concept

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:48 PM PST

I am exploring an idea where we help small & medium sized businesses manage late and no payments. We pay at the due date of the invoice and manage the collections and claims on our backend. On average we would charge 2% an invoice. Is this a useful services to you? Check out Antle.co and let me know what you think. (Our partners are in North America only for now)

    Virtual Assistant Salespeople?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 08:42 PM PST

I am the owner of a small biz and I have a team of 3 people that work for me- an admin and 2 technicians that work in the field. Over the past year, we've experienced decent growth, so I've hired 2 new full-time employees (technicians listed above.)

The overhead of having all three employees now is starting to hurt my bottom line. I was hoping that by hiring more technicians to service the incoming jobs would make my life easier and generate more income, but during the slow season (winter), it's proving to be costly and my technicians need A LOT of help finding potential leads and driving sales.

Have any of you ever hired a virtual assistant salesperson? If so, what was your experience like? My business is sort of niche and is part of the film and video industry in NYC. Would a virtual assistant salesperson know how to secure leads and sales within my industry? How should payment work- hourly rate vs. commission?

    Any insight would be helpful!

Resources to learn about starting a digital product business?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 07:42 PM PST

I'm ready to jump in and try to start my own business. The concept for a B2B digital product, and I've done my market research to validate it.

My question is — what resources/influencers/experts can I follow and refer to for tips on how to run a business like this?

Most of the "gurus" I see out there are pushing affiliate marketing and/or blogging...

    Taxes upon business sale

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:07 PM PST

A relative is telling me they have to pay $500k in taxes upon the sale of their franchise business. They've owned it for years, and it is worth 1-1.25mm at most. I thought they'd pay capital gains at 15ish percent...but in what other scenario might they owe this much in taxes? Is there a tax deferred loss scenario that could be impacting them?

Do you offer discounts to groups such as police, teachers, students, etc.? How did you let them know of the discount? What are your general thoughts?

I'm curious what has been your experience in offering discounts to these groups of people.

What's your thought process for why you offer the discount? Has it been worth it in the end? How did you let them know about the discount?

    Business planning

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:28 PM PST

Hello, advice would be very welcome. My business partner and I are health providers. Over the years, we have developed a side business to our own clinics, with associates who provide therapy and we manage and do all of the behind the scenes stuff. This has increasingly expanded, but we are realising now that we have never really properly planned this out and have instead just 'gone' with where the business has taken us and been reactive.

We can see that there are many parts of the day to day running processes which aren't as efficient as they could be. However, before jumping in and changing these systems, we recognise we need to now step back and set goals and plan long term strategies more thoughtfully, first.

We both work part time as health providers, alongside the associate business and have very young kids, so we want to try and use our limited time effectively.

What process or system would you use as a first step to plan your long term strategies and goals. From there how would you plan changes to your day to day operations, which fit with these strategies? We are not looking for investment, so don't know if it's worth spending the time on a full business plan at this stage. Words of wisdom gratefully appreciated!

    LLC Registration Scams (New York)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:02 PM PST

TLDR: Got a scam letter for filling out a required NYS form. Ignored it.

Hey people. Just got an official looking document in the mail concerning re-registering my LLC with the State of New York. In NY you are required to update your contact info with the state every 2 years. It's basically if somebody wants to sue your LLC, they have an address on file which to serve papers. It must be my time.

So, I get this notice in the mail, and it wants $100. I was taken back, like, "Fuck, this used to be $9!" I jumped out of my chair, and starting ranting, running around my office cursing out Gov Cuomo and the state's legislature. Then, when I calmed down and I read this letter more closely. It wasn't quite as official as I thought. The entity that sent me this garbage this is called CPG. From what I can gather they are legit. They provide a service of filing this form for you for a fee, which if you do the math, is $91. They'd rather take a check, so they aren't paying credit card fees.

To be fair, there is a disclaimer saying they are in not affiliated with New York State.

You can go to the NYS government website and re-register and guess what? Pay $9.

    Be careful.

Do I need to register as a business? What kind, etc?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 12:09 PM PST

Not actually my business, but I would be helping out with various things. (Not sure if that is relevant as far as how to register things). Ok so my mother is a crafty person and has been getting increasing interest for the various things she makes. So far it's really just a hobby, mostly she donates to different organizations. Occassionally she will sell just for the cost of materials, so not to make a profit. Does this warrant getting a business license? (Location: Sacramento Ca). A couple different shops (in different counties but both in Ca) have expressed interest in selling her crafts which I assume would mean she needs a business license, right? So what type of business? (No employees, she does everything herself with occassional informal help from me so sole proprietorship? Partnership?). Does she need an accountant, a bookkeeper, insurance? This is all so new. We are just trying not to break laws, not even really looking to profit as a priority, (just break even if anything). Not looking for financing so I don't see much need for a written out business plan. (Should I?) She doesn't work otherwise so my father is the only one who files taxes, how will that be affected? Has anyone else had a situation where a hobby accidentally became profitable or just needed its costs covered? Any common mistakes to be aware of? The main thing is she doesn't want this to transform from something fun and relaxing into a headache inducing chore.. So I'm trying to figure out how to keep everything legal and OK in the simplest way possible. (Sorry about rambling post, not even sure exactly what questions to ask.)

How do I set up distributorship for a spice business?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:01 AM PST

    As the title says.

We are a 5-yr old business and we manufacture dried herbs and spices that we sell to hotels and restaurants. 90% of our clients are in our city and we would like to sell to other parts of the country but can't afford to open offices/distribution hubs at this time. As we live in an archipelago and have to send products to different islands, shipping cost and transit times is really a challenge so in order to reach clients, it would make sense to get distribution partners instead. We already have 2 people in 2 different areas interested but I don't know what to do. My idea is to set a distributor price and distributors can decide on their selling price according to their market.

Some of the key questions I have are as follows:

    1. How do I set the distributor price? Should it just be a certain percentage off of our retail price?

    2. I'm thinking of requiring a bond and giving the distributor a credit limit that is equal to the bond amount. Example, bond is 100k so they get to have 80k as line of credit. Is this a good idea?

    3. I'm sure we would need a contract but what should I include? Do I impose a quota or sales target where if they don't reach it we will revoke the distributor agreement and give it to someone else? What about territories?

    4. What kind of support do I give? I told them I will be happy to fly to their cities and help them set up their warehouse and maybe shadow them on their sales call or do their appointments with them to see prospective clients. What about samples and marketing materials such as brochures? Are these given for free or do they need to buy them?

    5. Are there other things that I need to be aware of, need to study/consider, or things that I missed? Are there resources that I can read online about it? Or a book? I tried to look but can't find any. Maybe I'm looking for/at the wrong places or things.

Thank you all for your insights, I greatly appreciate it.
