A Lifehack about how to get to know your employees and your top management Posted: 26 Feb 2020 11:12 PM PST When I was CEO, I always had between 7 to 9 employees reporting directly to me. Naturally, not all of them had the same relationships with me. With some it was easy for me while I felt some tension when communicating with others. They were all professionals, but professionalism does not guarantee personal compatibility. At the same time, I considered the understanding between me and top managers to be a crucial factor in the success of my company. And then I came up with a way to overcome the problem: I started taking such employees with me on business trips. Sometimes under a vain pretext. My goal was to spend a lot of time with them in a relaxed atmosphere in a plane, train or taxi. Whether one likes it or not, people, when sitting in neighboring chairs, begin to communicate more. Little by little, I used this opportunity not only to listen to them, but also to speak myself. I tried to explain my position to them on various issues. It's true that sometimes the result was different - after two or three trips, I realized that the top manager and I were incompatible, so we parted. Not all relations can be brought to perfection, but it is definitely worth trying. How do you build a rapport with your employees and subordinates? [link] [comments] |
I'm Ready To Start... Help For a Noob? Posted: 26 Feb 2020 11:56 PM PST I've run some websites over the past several years, but they don't do all that well. I've also noticed that in general, relying strictly on Adsense revenue seems to be way inferior to selling and making money that way, but obviously it depends on the product too... But I think a lot of you see what I mean. So for a number of months now, I've been brainstorming for an online store dedicated to a particular niche. Looking to sell all kinds of stuff. Apparel, related widgets and so on. For the former, I've been looking heavily at Printful, at least to start. Seems great not having to invest in a bunch of stock that may not move. That could come later, but for now this seems like the way to go. I've brainstormed a ton of products, did a bunch of mockups in GIMP, thought a lot about a name, all that kind of stuff. My questions really are this:
I guess I have a few other concerns as well such as taxes on self-employment, easy and proper accounting both for myself, and come tax season (will be using Wordpress w/ WooCommerce). But these are the main ones I'd really need to clear up before I'd feel comfortable even buying a domain name for it. Just want to do it right and protect myself, you know? Thanks so much for your guys' help! [link] [comments] |
Is it bad that my employees know more? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:29 AM PST Hi all, One of my many business ideas is to start an architecture agency, specialized in parking garages and tunnels. I noticed that many people find parking garages and tunnels scary places, and I can definitely see why. I will put together a team of architects and people with an understanding of interior design who know what makes a place cozy or creepy. We will contact municipalities and places of entertainment such as theaters or shopping centers, proposing to make their parking garage a better place. The problem I have is that in high school I chose not to do physics. Here in Europe that means that I can never follow a formal architect education. Of course I need to know what my employees are doing. I thought about taking multiple courses and reading multiple books about architecture. As much as I can. Steve Jobs couldn't code. Will it be a problem that I have less knowledge of architecture than my employees? Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 08:39 PM PST Hello I am currently a sophomore in high school and was just looking for some advice on possible career paths. I have been in ap/ honors classes my whole education (especially math) and sort of like analyzing data and planning. What careers in business are there with interests similar to this. Although I do not want to hunched in a desk TOO much. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Initial steps to follow to form a company or a business Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:17 AM PST Consider that two persons, one from technical background and one from financial background, work on a project. They get a huge success doing that project and they decide to form a company. My question is that, how they will decide their shares in the company profits? And how a partnership agreement will look?. What are the initial steps they should take to form the company OR set up their business? [link] [comments] |
How do I find or attract clients when I've started a new single member LLC software company? Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:01 PM PST I'm a full stack cloud developer with experience creating mobile apps and web apps in the cloud. Eventually I want to hire new team members but first I think I need a client or two. What's the secret to finding clients and attracting business? [link] [comments] |
I’m done with sell-side agents. Posted: 26 Feb 2020 01:40 PM PST Not sure if this is the right sub. I'm an investor (public assets) but now looking at privately own assets (private equity, real estate). I'm having the worst time calling agents that represent sellers on the current market. I finally had a conversation with a nice woman who is an accredited buy-side advisor. It took a long time to convince her to take my meeting (she was scared bc of my young voice) and I was like ummm want to see proof of funds? She said sure and I sent it. Now that I've built some trust... How can I best navigate our relationship? I don't really want to pay a retainer because of the risk but I'd be willing to pay her a closing fee of 3% (on top of the 3% she'd get from the seller's representative). I do not enjoy conflict of interests, especially when it comes to money. Any comments or experience with using buy-side representative would be helpful. I have represented the buy-side before with fundraising and deal-flow but my experience with small businesses are limited. As context: I'm looking to buy a small day care center with 50k EBITDA and with further M&A — I'd add on to the platform to total 200k EBITDA or about 1M in revenue. I do not plan to fundraise but have friends/family who always beg to invest with me. I have about 150-200k in cash so I'd have 1M in buying power (about 15-20% on the deal). Also, it's important to note I've been studying the market and all of the on-market deals do not fit my investment criteria. Which makes me uncomfortable utilizing such high leverage. I want to ensure I find the exact deal I have in my head, hence the buy-side advisor to find the off-market deal. I'm aware I can do it myself — but between taking care of my family, learning a language, finishing pilot school & other responsibilities — I'm extremely limited on time. I will free up my time once the deal is active. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 12:52 PM PST I am trying to figure out what niche my website should mainly cater to. I have a couple of online businesses, but I am primarily a website developer/designer. Most of my clientele is local, but I am wanting to switch up my income streams. So, I am planning on adding content marketing to my web development site. Starting the blog on the site isn't the issue, figuring out what audience I am trying to appeal to is what is tripping me up. Basically I have two options in my mind (please feel free to point out another I may have missed). Either way, my audience is basically small businesses and entrepreneurs, as that is the majority of my client base. First off, I could write content about creating a successful business in general. This would be things like basic marketing tactics, the best onboarding systems, things like that. The ultimate purpose would be to drive more website service sales and possibly grow my business enough to hire other developers. The second option would be to write content to teach others about website building, maintenance, hosting, etc. To appeal to those who want to do it themselves. This would have a goal of creating and selling products and courses to go along with that. As my current business stands- which makes more sense? To write things relevant to my target audience that just so happens to also try to sell them my services? Or to create products that would create more passive income, but essentially is competing with my own services? [link] [comments] |

Stock tips and socializing can get broker-dealers and financial advisors in trouble with the SEC. Posted: 26 Feb 2020 09:12 AM PST HERE'S THE SITUATION:You just sank an 8-footer to save par and close out the front nine with a couple of clients. The sun burned off the layer of morning moisture that rested on top of the grass when you teed off. After you shove your trusty bronze blade putter you've had since high school, you and your client take your seats in the golf cart. Then, as you drive past the clubhouse to the 10th hole tee box, he asks you whether he should be shorting Tesla. "Sure," he says, "Ol'Musky is a miracle-worker, but maybe we should shift some of my exposure to an ETF or something. What do you think?" It's an innocuous question, but does Regulation Best Interest require you, an RIA or BD, to exercise discretion? Must an RIA or BD meet all the Best Interest Obligations even in casual conversations? Whereas what constitutes a recommendation as "best interest" will be more clear in time, the SEC is quite explicit about this type of interaction. https://rixtrema.com/blog/stock-tips-and-socializing-can-get-bds-and-rias-in-trouble-with-reg-bi/ [link] [comments] |
Setting Up A UK Company To Use For Crowdfunding Posted: 26 Feb 2020 08:06 AM PST Greetings, I'm a video game developer. I'd like to launch a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for the game I'm currently developing, but I'm based in Greece, a country where Kickstarter is not available. I've searched around and found many creators in the same predicament, and many of them formed companies in eligible countries and launched their campaigns through them. Kickstarter requires the following in order to launch your campaign as a business entity:
It then requires you to complete a form for identity verification as a UK resident. You need a UK home address (Could I use the same address as the business Address?) Afterwards, the site asks for bank account details, and of course, the account must be UK-based. Lastly, it requires a UK Visa, Mastercard or American Express Debit card to use in case of chargebacks. The goal of the campaign would be to raise around 3844 ($5000) pounds. If the campaign succeeds, I would have to pay the taxes, transfer all the funds to a personal account and close the company. What would be the most cost effective way to handle this? Thank you for your time. [link] [comments] |
Career path to gain skills for starting a small business? Posted: 26 Feb 2020 06:51 AM PST I am currently an entry level production engineer responsible for planning some aspects of the construction of offshore vessels. I have the oportunity to move to the commerial department to do procurement/purchasingfor equipment and contracting. If I want to start a small business that sells some widget unrelated to the offshore industry, what career path should I take to gain the most skills related to starting a business, stay in production or move to commercial? To me it seems as if commerial would be the best option. What do you think? [link] [comments] |
