How my company's first deep-cleaning job went Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:16 PM PST My cousin and I started a deep-cleaning service in our city focusing on commercial/restaurant kitchens, and we got our first job on Monday. The job was to deep-clean the kitchen and the exhaust hood/grease ducts. It was a free job on a high-rated restaurant so we could build credibility since we have a good relationship with the owners. This is in a developing country, so the cost of labor and materials is relatively cheap. I had three technicians/cleaners working on the kitchen all for about $120 USD for a full day. Here's how it went:
I just wanted to document this and say I now know that starting a business is never a straight line to success, and there's a lot of hurdles (some preventable and some not) along the way. But I learned a HUGE deal about the business, and know how I can improve it for the next job. [link] [comments] |
How to Write Copy that Actually Makes you Money (A Guide) Posted: 28 Jan 2020 11:46 PM PST Hey guys! Writing copy that convinces people to buy something isn't hard. And if you don't know what "copy" is, it is just text that you read online (you're reading copy RIGHT NOW). Anyway, people smarter than you and myself have CRACKED the code on what makes good copy that actually generates dollars. Ray Edwards, one of the greatest copywriters of all time came up with the acronym P.A.S.T.O.R. to teach effective copywriting.
He used PASTOR, which originally means to shepherd, to show that the copywriter is like a shepherd, someone who leads his flock(audience or customers). Breaking down P.A.S.T.O.R. (the examples can be changed to fit any business)
That's it! The P.A.S.T.O.R. model is simple but will definitely help you write some better copy just after following those steps. Go implement this technique and see if you can get some more sales or leads! Hope you guys enjoyed this guide! Like this method or do you think there's a better way to do it? Let's discuss in the comments! Sources: Ray Edwards blog (not a ref link) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2020 01:21 PM PST Basically, I own an insurance agency and make a pretty decent living off of it. However, the industry is changing and its getting harder and harder to grow. I see the writing on the wall and I need to start making plans about diversifying my income streams. I live in a town of 20,000, county of 50,000. Most people are lower middle class. No nearby towns. There is a locally owned burger chain in the region that has a cult like following. It's not a popular brand at all outside of my general area, but they have about 10 restaurants or so but none close to me. I'm thinking about opening one as we do not have a good burger place in town, we just have McDonald's and Burger King. This chain seems to have locations that have remained in business for a long time, I have only found one location that has closed and it's in a horrible area. I do not want to flip burgers for a living and really don't have any desire to work in a restaurant. Which I understand is going to hurt the bottom line because good, responsible help isn't cheap. I'm planning to try and contact other owners of this particular brand to see if they'll tell me about their experience. Any advice? I've got plenty of money set aside doing nothing (since I'm self employed I keep way too much cash stashed for a rainy day) and I need to figure out a way to do something with it. Real estate (rental houses) aren't all that lucrative in my area so I'm trying to find a good alternative. [link] [comments] |
Any coders here working on Company Management Softwares? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 10:16 AM PST Hey there fellow entrepreneurs! Its 2020 and I am surprised that more companies haven't automated a lot of their daily operational tasks. A lot of work in many companies is still done manually and I am looking to create minimalistic software solutions for these problems. Do you guys know of any existing suite of tools that solve this problem? It must be a suite, I know individual solutions exist. If you are interested in solving this problem with, let me know in the comment section and maybe we can brainstorm a way forward? I'll be super interested to talk if you're a programmer who can help me create the MVP that we can pitch to onboard initial members. Cheers! Feel free to critique the idea! 👍 [link] [comments] |
The Value Proposition of Micro Influencers Vs. Macro Influencers Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:40 AM PST I have been utilizing Influencers to grow companies since the days of Myspace. I used to call them "Brand Ambassadors" back then but it's the same concept as Influencers today. It seems like a lot of people doing Influencer marketing use Macro Influencers. I've only ever used "Micro" influencers as I feel the benefits outweigh the initial lack of reach using smaller Influencers with fewer followers. Here's my rational, tell me what you think: Macro Influencer DisadvantagesCost Prohibitive - Macro Influencers charge hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars per post, this makes it very difficult to scale your brand with smaller budgets. Limited Engagement Opportunities - Macro Influencers tend to post "ShoutOuts" which can't link to your website, landing page or lead forms. The only thing they can do is add your Instagram handle. If your intent is to drive traffic, this limits the amount of traffic you will get from a shoutout as potential customers have to navigate to your bio and click on your bio link. Short Life Cycles - ShoutOuts also have short life cycles, most only stay up for 4-8 hours before being taken down so there are no long-term benefits to them. Only Reaches Passive Consumers - If you are trying to sell a product or service on Instagram using Macro Influencers, you will only be reaching passive consumers. These are people that are only on the Influencers feed to consume content produced by the Influencer. They aren't actively trying to find your product, so their purchase intent is minimal at best. This results in few sales and lots of wasted ad dollars. Unless your Influencer is hyper targeted to a specific niche of followers that directly match your niche, the ROI of these campaigns can be very small to non-existent. Difficult to Scale - Working with macro Influencers sometimes requires long negotiation periods, content calendars and limited engagement opportunities. Leveraging numerous Influencers for your campaign will be difficult especially if you are trying to launch a full campaign all at the same time. The Micro Influencer DifferenceMicro Influencers are easy to work with, they have no misconceptions about their limited ability to reach millions of followers because they don't have many. Micro Influencers have the ambition to become Macro Influencers and getting to work with any company who reaches out to them is an exciting prospect. Here are a few reasons we only work with Macro Influencers: You can afford an army of them - You could easily spend $5,000 on one shoutout with a Macro Influencer. For the same budget, you could engage over 1,000 Micro Influencers using a contest and pay the winner $1,500 to $2,500 and use the rest of your savings to cover other related campaign costs. I would rather have an army of 1,000 people creating and sharing content for my brand everyday for three months at a time than waste it on one shoutout. You'll get greater reach - Micro Influencers reach infinitely more targeted customers than an Influencer with a million followers. Only a small percentage of an Influencers followers will even see their post and engage with it. Having 1,000 influencers create, share and promote your brand all over the internet will reach millions of eyeballs. Further, Influencers can rank your own content in search engine result pages allowing you to generate higher quality, highly targeted customers see your content. Build brand affinity - Hiring Micro Influencers gives you an awesome opportunity to tell your story to people who will listen to it and share it with family and friends. Micro Influencers get hyper engaged in the process of creating and sharing content. Build lasting value - Micro Influencers can create a massive amount of content about your products and brand. They can create product review videos, informational videos about your industry, unpackaging videos and social media posts. They can also share content you create like blog posts, social media posts and videos. This content allows you to drive more product and brand discovery long after the campaign is over. Build Authority - Micro Influencers help you build brand authority with Google, Instagram, YouTube and other platforms you use to reach consumers. Authority helps your content rank quicker in social search engines and Google search as the content you create that is shared and engaged with during your campaign is now very authoritative. As Influencers share your posts, like and comment on them, they become more authoritative along with your brand. [link] [comments] |

How do you self fund a high capital business without borrowing money? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 02:09 PM PST I don't make much money at my day job at all and the capital to get started is too much. It is a manufacturing business that requires a decent amount of room and equipment to start. I live significantly below my means, pretty much starving myself to save money. I live with my parents to save even more, but still coming out short. I do 99% of the business myself to save money too. 0% outsourcing. What do I do? There is no room to do the operation in my parents basement. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2020 01:54 PM PST I'm a software engineer. I've always been looking for ways to help my country, my dream is to bring down the corrupt oligarchy ruling us but I've learned that there's nothing to do within my power to reach that dream, that my dream is somethings irrational and there's no systematic way to approach it when the government stifle every political movement and willingly kill the protesters. I learned what we need is rationality, healthy education and knowledge. when more and more people recognize the systematic corruption and learn that all of this misery which is brought upon us is not by chance or individual carelessness, we'll certainly move toward a better future. So enough of political lecture, I've been pursuing a CS program in one of the most prestigious colleges in my country and I've got the chance to easily leave the country and pursue higher education in countries like the US, Canada or western Europe, but I haven't been able to convince myself to do so because I want to do something, just pursuing a better life for myself isn't self-fulfilling for me. I've learnt that top students in my country usually come from rich families, families who can cover massive expenses of private tutor, great schools, dozens of books to help their children get the education they need to perform well at universities entrance exams. I believe this's a massive problem. our colleges aren't diverse enough any more. bunch of rich, happy-go-lucky students come, spend a few years and then apply for colleges abroad and never come back. basically every year hundreds of millions of dollar is wasted. I want to provide a platform with rich and high-quality content, for the ones who can't afford buying dozens of textbooks and even for those who are simply just looking for material online, one massive problem is that there's literally no usable content (in my native language) about anything related to education. take "law of large numbers" which is among the most famous Statistics theorems, there's literally just one rigorous mathematical article about it, the rest are simple applications which is more helpful for those who want to throw buzzwords around not for a real college student. The way I want to achieve it: I want to develop an MVP in my free time in 6 months or so, and then use qualified volunteers to prepare a draft for some high school courses (high school courses are not that hard and they're lots of willing people to help) and then use a pull request (like in Git) model to let anyone propose their changes to the course (basically a person can edit the course with a text editor and then propose her changes, then some qualified moderators check her changes, if they add value and there's not errors in her edit, then it will be merged with the main course). For financial matters, I'm thinking about donations as the main source but I have no experience doing this kinds of voluntary nonprofit work and I'm not sure how people will donate and whether it'll be enough or not. If everything goes well, I think I can handle the engineering side of the business myself or with minimal help (there's no cost so) for the first year. as for moderators, again I think in the first year we can make do with volunteer moderators. if the business takes off then we need a team of full-time engineers and full-time content moderators (for urgent needs, we'll still be dependent on our volunteer moderators, people like professors, competent students who can devote some time but need flexible schedule), and business people to take care of spreading the word. we'll surely scale according to the budget we have but if donations were surprisingly low then I consider advertisement as another source of income to keep the business on its feet. I want the business to embrace complete transparency, everything from donations, to salary reports, who's proposing edits, who's approving the edits, who merge the edits. I want them all be transparent so that people can trust and feel that the money they donate is spent in the right way. That we're not another money laundering charity. So what do you think? do you find what I said above rose-colored or you find it doable if enough time and effort is put in? do you have any related, semi-related experience that I can use? any tips? Thank you for your time. [link] [comments] |
Building a business good as a learning experience? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 07:46 AM PST I'm 16+ and my school has taught me absolutely nothing about business. I've started a few businesses (in which I kept stopping and making new businesses) I've learnt a lot from my businesses but my main question is if I should continue trying to build my latest business (good for future resume? Good to test out tips and tricks from the new business course I'm admitted in?) or I should just give my business away and let other people handle it (If the person is able to keep the hobby-business afloat I'll gain 10% royalty fee from the profits he makes) - also hard to find a person who can actually keep a business afloat as everyone I know are of the same age as me and are equally or worse than me in building businesses [link] [comments] |

Need a way to enhance my portfolio pictures Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:33 PM PST Hello, I run a small roofing/siding/window company and haven't had the best online presence. As I currently work on it, I always run into the same issue with my photos. Almost all of them are taking using a phone camera and probably haven't been the best angle/lighting. I have a lot of jobs though. I need help choosing the best ones, or easiest ones to work with, and making them look more presentable. Not changing a lot, just not dreary. Not something I necessarily want to do on my own as I struggle with these sort of things, unless there is an easy program that is free or something. Any help will be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Selling tea online and taxes? (Erie, PA USA) Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:00 PM PST Hey everyone! I own a relatively new business that I sell loose leaf tea online through eBay and my online store. My sales for the year adds up to about $3000. I have been a bit confused on paying my taxes here. I have no employees and I run my business out of my house. Since tea is considered tax free (at least in my state) how do I go about filling out taxes? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
What is the best way to approach a company with an app idea ? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 11:57 AM PST Hi ! I am a 16 years old web developer. In the last months, I built a massive project by myself about volunteering. It got some impact in my local community and my school may even finance the project for the next years. This is my first project, but it is pretty big and many people find it very interesting. I got some confidence by contacting people and interacting with them and I got a LOT of experience in web development with this project. I am looking for something that could make me actual money. When I went to the gym, I got an idea. I go to a very cheap gym, but they are little videos explaining some machines in the middle. It is good, but you can't hear anything and you have to stand there for like 5 minutes. I thought : what if there was an app that could do this more easily ? So, I started thinking about an app that would allow you to scan some machines, get a card about the machine, how you must adjust the seat, how to move, etc. I want to contact the company that owns the gyms (they own like 70 gym that are pretty close) and talk to them about my idea and how I would like to build it for them. I think the idea is pretty good, but maybe I can play the "I am young, this is good press showing that you allow something young to work for you to achieve their dream, it would help my futur career, etc", but I don't want to rely on that. I am also kinda lost. How do I establish a price ? If I pay myself 20$/hour and I can do it in like 20 hours, I would ask them to pay me 400$. However, a small price like this for an app that would be used in 70 gyms seems illogic. How can I settle on a price ? Do I tell them how much I would like, then negotiate ? Do I ask them how much they are willing to pay, hope that they tell a high price and if it's too low I bargain ? I am just afraid I am going to not be taken seriously, that they will try to take advantage of me, etc. [link] [comments] |
$50 Social Media Course Idea Feedback (NOT SELLING ANYTHING) Posted: 29 Jan 2020 11:38 AM PST Hello, I would like to know if you would find a comprehensive but compact course on how to schedule a month's worth of content in 1 hour valuable. The course will probably take anywhere from 1 week to one month to complete. I have been doing social media for a long time and thus have a very efficient system where I can schedule a month's worth of content in one hour using just my phone and tools like Canva, hootsuite, Tailwind, etc... The course will include basics on smartphone photography, Lightroom, Canva designs, branding, staying organized, audience research, brand voice, and then a streamlined organization and scheduling system so they can "set it and forget it" My target market is entrepreneurs/SMBs who don't have the time or money to hire a social media content manager/ graphics/etc... By showing them how to streamline this process, it will help them establish a clean brand and presence. Or they can provide this info to an intern or assistant who isn't social media savvy. You would surprised how many young people just don't get professional social media. I feel like $50 is a fair price for what I am teaching them, I am happy to hear all feedback and of course reciprocate. - Jackie :) [link] [comments] |
What should I read before hiring my first employee (part time) in the UK? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 03:53 AM PST I am a self-employed financial consultant in London making over £300,000 per year. How will I receive waived tax penalty refund for my LLC? (in NC) Posted: 29 Jan 2020 10:25 AM PST Hey guys in December I paid a late penalty for my partnership LLC in NC. Recently I got a letter saying the penalty was waived and I will be refunded the penalty amount via mail. I was wondering who the check will be made out to? I paid the penalty using my personal credit card to pay it all at once for both my partner and I. Will the check be made out to a partners name or will it be made out to the name of our LLC? And if that is the case I'm assuming neither me nor my partner will be able to goto our personal banks and deposit/cash it, is that correct? Thank you so much for any insight. I have been on hold with the IRS for 4 hours over 2 days and it gets disconnected every time after a long wait. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Advice for hiring a freelancer from India? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 10:15 AM PST I made a deal with a freelancer in india. An extensive Website and SEO for $1800. I've never bought anything from outside the US before so I'm looking for advice, what I should worry about, and how these deals are usually done. We've agreed very in depth on the work expected should take about 3 weeks for the website and then more time for SEO. We've come up with a payment plan. Should I make a contract? I feel with a risk always less than $500 and being across an ocean it wouldn't be worth the time and money pursuing legally if it happens to be a scam. I've seen a lot of proof of work and am very doubtful on that. What do you guys think? Am I overpaying? Is there other risks im unaware of? Am I being naive? My gut tells me this is a good deal. Any advice is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Any non-technical solopreneurs launched using a development agency? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 10:05 AM PST Context: I want to launch a local taxi service (Uber, but not really) to allow for more efficient dispatch of the existing taxi pool. Currently, cabs are booked by calling the cab companies and waiting for dispatch to connect you with a cab. Sometimes their lines are busy, or they can't raise one of their cabs and they'll ask you to call again in 5 minutes. Frustrating, as you can imagine. Anyway, doing a straw poll of cab drivers and a few said they would be on board if there was a system that worked and could get more passengers in their cars. So, I've been thinking of moving ahead with this, to at least create an MVP that I can launch with some drivers, and build out from there. It's important that I mention that I am NOT in the US, we don't have Uber or a market that would support their model (a ride share would be considered an illegal taxi and your car would be impounded on top of the humongous tickets you'd receive). I'm not a developer, but not a complete tech novice, either. Currently, I run a web design and marketing agency. I want to partner with/hire an app development agency to build it while I work on the marketing (to recruit more drivers, and increase the userbase). Has anyone here who doesn't have a programming background ever started a tech-based start-up without a technical co-founder? Did you hire an agency? What was that experience like? Any things from your experience that I should be mindful of to improve my odds of success? Thanks in advance. EDIT - notwithstanding the specific example above, I am looking for general insight into working with agencies for non-technical people. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jan 2020 11:44 PM PST This lady i know started making and selling soaps online. No price at all. Another friend of a friend opened a hair salon and has no prices online despite using social media heavily. Lastly, a guy in my neighborhood is importing Chinese car parts, promoting it heavily online and yet no prices. I can literally Google his product and get a price instantly. What do these entrepreneurs think? That their competition will beat them on price? All of their competition has prices online. Are they trying to trick unsuspecting customers? It trying to woo you in with customer service and charm when you contact them for a price? It literally makes no sense and it's such an turn off. Help me understand their thought process. Is this a good item to sell door to door for quick profit? Posted: 28 Jan 2020 10:28 PM PST I know a lot of people in my area, like me, suffer from low range and slow wifi. Most people around here also have large gardens and wifi won't reach down them. I was considering buying maybe 50 wifi signal boosters and walking around town selling them door to door, letting people pay cash or through a Square card reader. Is this a good idea or should I pick something else? [link] [comments] |
Will trying and trying build a business? Posted: 29 Jan 2020 07:39 AM PST I have a hobby business I keep implementing new services and discarding bad ones, in which I'll change my mind again and implement more new services and discard. Is this considered a testing phase in a business? If I keep "restarting"again and again due to bad ideas and new ideas (while successfully growing a customer base slowly), will I ever reach a point where my focus stabilises? TLDR: focus keeps changing and "restarting", is this bad? Do I need to stop? Or is this a good thing? [link] [comments] |
