Stop and think before starting a new years 'hustle'. There is no such thing as passive income, drop shipping, amazon fba and print on demand is very unlikely to make you a millionaire. Do not buy courses, e books or other BS that tells you it can.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:51 AM PST

I'm sick to my back teeth of this. You've all seen the youtube adverts promising riches and an easy life if you follow their formula. First the free ebook. Then the course. Then the elite membership. Its all bullshit. Passive income is not a thing. Do not fall for it this year. Do not pay anyone to tell you the shortcuts to success.

Entrepreneur/startup accelerators? I'd love to hear your experiences and recommendations.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 12:18 PM PST

I'm the co-founder of an early stage startup. We're in the SaaS space, and have funding. I'm in Israel and there's a huge community here that I'm not really apart of. I want to change that and potentially join an accelerator (as long as it's worth my time of course).

Are there startup accelerators in Israel or do I have to look elsewhere? I'm a dual citizen of the US so I'm open to look there if there's a worthy program.

    Many thanks.

    Everyday.app Year 3: Approaching $5k MRR

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 01:11 PM PST

Hello and happy new 2020 fellow entrepreneurs!!

I'm not gonna lie, 2019 was a tough year for me, quite a few things didn't work out as I expected while I wasn't brave enough to face others.

However, there are definitely some positive takeaways. Here's a little summary of my 2019's resolutions:

📕 Read 28/40 books. Read on 95% of the days!

👥 Met 846/1000 people. Met new ppl on 61% of the days!

🚀 Grew my indie biz everyday.app from $1.2k/mo to $4.8k/mo. Worked on it 100% of the days!

    💪 Did 14840 push-ups. Did push-ups on 100% of days.

I also and most importantly managed to work on everyday.app every day! Some of the days, the workload was almost irrelevant but still worth it enough for me to feel like I had moved a little bit forward! Worked on everyday.app every day!

When it comes to everyday.app, 2019 was definitely a good year. The mobile apps got super polished which earned the iOS app a feature on the AppStore's frontpage of the iOS13 release 12x-ing the traffic for a full month... ah... if only you could just be featured all year long ;D

Now that I'm just a few days away from the third anniversary of me writing the first line of the back then called everydayCheck, I've put things in perspective to realize how important the long term game is. It feels like my little daily efforts have kept on compounding to get the app to where it is now. Now, don't get me wrong, I've still got a loooooong way to go, but when I think about how unattainable this situation felt back then, I'm still amazed. My mindset has changed so much with each burnt phase (initial idea, first payment, first renewal, getting featured, experimenting with prices, storytelling...) it's even hard to recognize some of my old journaling writings... ah... that 2017 IndieHackers interview looks from another decade now ;D

I think a lot of people give up on ideas too early. Even here on IndieHackers we can see repetitive patterns of ideas (what the hell, for the sake of an example, I'm working on a habit tracker!) and I think in most cases the main differentiator between an idea, a nice side-project and a real business is the amount of long-term invested time. I now realize I could have made solid businesses out of most of my previous sideprojects...

My point here is, unless you are really sure you are going nowhere, work on your project everyday.app a little bit, for a very long time.

PS: By the way, I decided to start the year launching Everyday 2.0 on ProductHunt so make sure to check it out :)

PS2: IndieHackers has definitely played an important role for inspiration and learning to avoid some of our major pitfalls (If you haven't read Rob's post, please stop reading this right now and do it). Organizing the IH Barcelona Meetup with Tair and Domingo has brought a new dimension into indiehackerism for me. It's like satiating the necessity of finding your identity and your bunch all at once! Make sure to join us when you are in town!

    What's in for 2020?

Keep working on the app every day, and hopefully stop sucking and marketing. Got any tips in that regard? I'd love to talk about how would you approach marketing to grow the app :)

    Thanks for reading!

Registering as an LLC? Plant Shop in Chicago/IL

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:43 AM PST

Hey, I'm in the process of registering my business in IL. I have been selling at markets/festivals the last few years, and I want to go legit this year.

From what I understand, it's best to form an LLC? I am not certain that I will have a physical shop/store, and I will most likely be renting out an abandoned lot and having outdoor sales on weekends. But, it would still be preferable to have the legal and financial protections of an LLC? I'm not sure what sort of trouble I'd find myself in, but I would rather be proactive in protecting myself from liabilities.

Is it better to hire an attorney or to use something like novo or legal zoom? I am good with legal/paperwork, so if it's not overly complicated, I could presumably do it myself and save some money.

Ghost company owners - I can't get my head around it

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 01:45 PM PST

I'll keep their names and company names concealed, but I know two "businessmen", who everyone knows are the owners of said companies but their names do not exist on any public records. They're ghosts.

    How is this possible?

These companies are turning over 8 figures.

Will anyone please provide a step by step guide as how to pull the mass of emails I am trying to get? I'd really appreciate it.

Take a less interesting, more stable job with higher pay? Or a more interesting, less stable job with a lower pay, while I pursue my passion on the side.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:59 AM PST

I'm (21M) in a bit of a pickle. I have the opportunity to work a high paying medical device sales position out of college (I will be making more money that most people make fresh out of college). However, it's not what I want to do long term. I also have the opportunity to work a really interesting job at a smaller company that's building itself up and I personally believe in a lot more - but I won't make as much money. Both I could learn a lot at, and can make good connections for the long term.

Do I suck it up for a couple of years, make some coin, and invest it all into my entrepreneurial endeavors? Or do I work the interesting job that I can potentially leverage in the future if my ideas take off, but make less money.

Thanks for any and all help.

EDIT: I appreciate the responses. I forgot to mention that the lower paying job is in the field that I want to go into entrepreneurship wise, so my connections there could go a long way.

Steps to prototype and make your "item" idea into a real thing

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:30 AM PST

I'm looking for some guidance how to bite this process...

I have an idea of creating these two simple items: a desk stand for a computer keyboard and a type of a usb micro SD card reader.

I have background in software development so this type of task is a stranger to me, but I have a motivation to learn and finish this project. Right now I'm lacking fundamental knowledge about how to start this type of project and where should I look for resources how to approach it.

I do realize that there are tons of these products on the market already and lots of them are failing, but I want to try anyway as I have interest in it and excites me as well, plus I have a very specific vision about the products that I would like to create that would be little different from all out there.

I would like to know few things:

    1. How do I turn my concept into the real thing:
      1. Should I try to prototype it myself with ie 3d printer? - downside is that I have no prior experience with these devices and would have to invest time in learning how to 3d print and get an actual device.
      2. Should I create a blue print in software like auto cad and then just find a contractor in china? - my experience here is very brief so in this case time investment would be significant.
      3. Should I create only simple sketch on a piece of paper and talk directly to contract who would be making the product or pay someone first to make a professional blue print?
      4. Should I create exact looking product in photoshop?
    2. How much I should expect it to cost approx.:
      1. Paying someone else to make a blue print?
      2. Paying for creating a prototype of devices?
      3. What could be a production cost?

I realize that it is impossible to give an exact answers about the cost but I would like to have only an idea, approximation if I would need a ~$1000 to make a prototype or that would just a price for making a blue print and prototype manufacturing would be 5 times that... There is tons of these products in the market already so I'm guessing that some of your have some idea already.

I'm also wondering how much of work I should plan to do myself and how much I should outsource to someone else...

Also what are the challenges that I could expect?

    Thanks

How to pay a single member LLC owner

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:55 AM PST

So my wife started a small business in 2019 and from advice from a friend we set up gusto to handle payroll so that the taxes and all that were automatically handled. I was doing some research and now finding that the correct way to pay a SMLLC owner is through owner draws and then the taxes will all work out when we file our personal taxes.

    A) did we screw up royally here? I have talked to Gusto and we aren't the only people to have done this and they can help us with the correction process.

    B) if A) is yes should we take gusto up on their offer to reverse everything or is there a way to just deal with it and have a W2 made up for her?

Thanks for your help. If I should ask this in r/Accounting or another sub let me know.

I run a side business while I was working for a full time job. Not sure is it the time to be self employed or not.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 12:36 AM PST

Hi, I have been running my side hustle for about 1 year+ which I made a total of $50k+ profit over the period. Meanwhile, I was working my full time job in a reputable company which pays me only $10k-12k in a year.

My side hustle has take up a lot of time time and effort to the point that I kind of neglect my full time job. I just recently got promoted in my full time job and my business in most probably on course to be getting more clients and profit . Possibly $125k in this year in revenue.

I'm not sure I should be quitting my full time job or not, but lately I have no motivation to continue when the income difference is too huge between my side hustle and full time. Note: I'm 23 this year, and only been working for a year.

And yes, I did hired some people to help on my business but I still do need supervise them which may take some of my time.

Should I quit my full time job, and try to scale it? I'm just worried once I quit my full time job, it will go downhill from there. My business niche is somewhat special, I supplied my clients who's doing blackhat SEO facebook marketing with genuine Facebook accounts.

    Want to start 2020 right

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:08 AM PST

So about 7 years ago I started a roofing business. Made really good money, but ended up shutting it down after a few years.

Since then I've tried a sales gig and did quite well but also left because it wasn't exactly what I wanted. I now have my mortgage license but I miss the hands on fact, and I'd like to start making some real money again so my fiance and I can afford to get married.

Anyways, to start 2020 I want to buy a cheap truck and start selling roofs again. I know I've done it before and I know the industry quite well but I'm always open to learning, any advice?

Working Two Jobs Because I Have Financial Boo Boo's

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:58 AM PST

    Happy New Year friends.

So let me preface this with… I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm just an average joe trying to make ends meet. I'm sure if I had access to capital, I could find a way to make some money somehow, but as you will find out that isn't the case.

Anywho, I work as a Clinical Tech at a recovery center 40 hours a week Monday to Friday from 9 am-5 pm. Not great money. However, because of my not so amazing decisions that I have made in my life, I have some hefty bills to pay and only have an excess of roughly $380 a month after all my non-negotiable bills are paid. Rent, lawyer bill, debt payment, child support...

    So, I took another job.

I found a job in the immediate vicinity of where I'm already working to limit travel time. I got hired at a nearby Chipotle. I'll be working 4ish weekdays in the evening from 5:15 pm to about 11 pm and squeezing a day shift in on the weekend. I'm glad I found something that fits with my current job and I'm excited to eat Chipotle until I'm blue in the face.

So, I'm curious, for those of you working two jobs, working and going to school, or working excessively in the workplace, how the heck do you manage it? How do you unwind? I notice this rebound effect where when I get off it takes me longer to unwind and go to bed despite being adequately tired. I also feel this phenomena like I just got "out of the ether" when the day is over. I feel like all of the personality traits I suppress for the sake of being professional are all saved up and waiting for me and come out when I'm off work and I end up cursing at the windshield and singing loudly to guilty pleasure music on the ride home.

I'm sure as time goes on, I'll adapt and working two jobs will be less invasive and will become the new norm and expectation for myself. Please give me your tips on how I could manage this, and not burnt out.

    Thank you for the input.

    Book Recommendations?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:53 AM PST

Currently reading How to Win Friends and Influence People. I'm loving it so far and in the short time I've been reading it it's really helped.

What are some other books that's helped you current/future entrepreneurs? I'm currently in a bad place living with my mom at 36. It all had to do with a bad decision I made which is why I'm in the spot I'm in.

I'm determined to make 2020 the best year I've ever lived. I've cut the negative people out of my life and I'm on the search of learning as much as I can. Any books, tips and overall guidance is greatly appreciated.

I hope everyone has a great and prosperous new year! :)

I Almost Got Scammed With A Classic Scheme. Here's What Happened.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:20 AM PST

Don't you just hate scammers? I almost fell into one of the most classic scams known — the fake cheque scam. Here's how it went down...

I always loved to write, so I decided to pick up copywriting. I learned everything there was to learn about copywriting. I spent hours reading books, blogs, newsletters, etc.

Once I wrote a few spec ads and got decent at writing, I started to look for clients.

Most of the work I got came from referrals and people I already knew, but I quickly outgrew my little circle.

So, against the wisdom provided by my teachers, I went on UpWork.

Everybody told me that UpWork and other freelancing sites are shitholes and if I were to find a client on Upwork, it would be a cheapskate who wanted writing for the price of dirt.

One night, I saw an ad on UpWork for a job I was super qualified for.

So naturally, I applied for it.

    Red flag #1:

"Jeff," wanted to give me an interview on Google Hangouts over text. It was weird — but I had no experience in UpWork, which gave me all the reasons to believe this guy wasn't shady. I ended up getting the job (go figure).

    Red flag#2:

A few days later, I'm sent a cheque through email to cash it and pay for "material" to get the job done. Let me tell you — this cheque looked REAL. "Jeff," told me to send some of the money to a "vendor" for the material required.

Now I might have been a noob on UpWork, but there was one thing I wasn't...

    Fucking stupid.

I looked up "fake cheque scam" on Google and found dozens of cases of people getting robbed blind from this exact scheme. I called the fraudster out, and he played stupid, thinking he could rope me back in.

I felt pretty stupid falling for this trick this far. But this guy was so credible!

Well, it's water under the bridge now. I am ditching UpWork for understandable reasons: I applied for one job and got a scammer right off the bat.

But it's not this bad experience that's gonna make me give up copywriting.

    So here's the deal.

I figured it's the holidays, and I have extra time. Since I'm giving up UpWork, I need to start networking. I figured Reddit would be a good place to start, so I'll offer all of you FREE copywriting. I'll write anything you need writing for free.

At this point, you've got nothing to lose. Don't like what I write? Fine. You don't have to use it; you got it for free.

Now I don't know how much work I'm gonna have, but if you're interested in the offer, I'd be quick to send a message. Free tends to go pretty quick.

    Happy New Year,

    -Goulet
