People who have gone through recessions, is the current feeling similar to those times?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 05:23 AM PST

It seems no matter what the stock market will continue rising. You can look at /r/teslainvestorsclub and bynd and other stocks to see people are (in my opinion, and I realize I don't understand absolutely anything about the market or the economy) way too optimistic. And not only for those speculative stocks above, but the whole market as well. Is the economy really that solid?

What to do with Dean Foods stock?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 05:43 AM PST

I just looked at an account I had more or less forgotten about and I have several hundred shares of Dean Foods. (RIP in peace.)

Is there any chance they might reorg and the stock would have value someday? Is there any downside to keeping it? I was thinking maybe I could hang onto it and even if it doesn't ever go back up I could wait until a year when I need some tax write offs and then sell it? Any thoughts? Thanks!

TESLA is a good example of why it's important to keep cash on hand.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:48 AM PST

I was watching Tesla as an investment at sub $220 at 250 I realized it was a strong buy. At 315 I thought I missed out. At 350 I realised I was wrong when I thought I had missed out. It dipped back to 330 and I thought if you missed out here's your shot. Spike to 380 I realised this stock was gold and it's safe to buy at the highs. 400, 430, 450, 500. I'm just watching my PAPER ACCOUNT rise. It doesnt matter. I've got no cash on hand. Ive got $30k in debt. It sucks to watch the stock climb by knowing how much I could have invested. But I've got no cash.

Selling shares of Vanguard index funds for home repairs - looking for advice, dos/don'ts, etc.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:11 AM PST

    Background:

    > I having been buying two Vanguard index funds weekly for the past ~7 years, and always buy dips.

    > I have some massive home repairs I need to pay for, and want to 'walk from the table' after these funds increased 30% in 2019.

    Questions:

1.) How do I make an informed decision about which cost basis to sell shares with?

2.) Are there general rules for which cost basis to use or not use?

3.) What are your recommendations for this process for someone like me who is not an expert on the matter?

    All info/opinions are appreciated.

    23(M) with $5000 to invest...

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:03 PM PST

Hey guys, I am considering making my first leap into the stock market. I have about $5000 to invest and I am interested in AMD, TSLA, SPY, and DISney. Should I split up my investments evenly across the board? Or do you guys recommend I focus on one or two of these stock options. I would love to hear some of your thoughts! Also I'm a beginner, I have invested some money in mutual funds, but this will be my first stab at the stock market.

Cybersecurity ETF HACK hits 52 week high

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:58 AM PST

Cybersecurity ETF HACK just hit a 52-week high — up roughly 24.8% from its 52-week low of $34.52/share.

The underlying Prime Cyber Defense Index utilizes a rules-based investment methodology to select a diverse group of companies actively involved in the cyber security industry. This includes companies like Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, Okta and more.

    Why the Move?

The cybersecurity corner of the U.S. stock market has been an area to watch lately, given the rise in Middle East tensions. The U.S. drone strike near the Baghdad international airport last week killed the top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani and fueled bets of Iranian cyber attacks on the United States. "Companies that offer threat-detection services are the ones most likely to benefit from increased risk of attacks," per Bloomberg.

(Note: I currently have a position in HACK)

Apple’s App Store had gross sales around $50 billion last year, but growth is slowing

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 07:18 AM PST

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/07/apple-app-store-had-estimated-gross-sales-of-50-billion-in-2019.html

Apple's App Store platform grossed around $50 billion in 2019, according to analysis by CNBC.

At $50 billion in sales per year, the App Store alone would be no. 64 on the Fortune 500, ahead of Cisco and behind Morgan Stanley.

Boeing in the news with another failure

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:12 PM PST

There's some question that this is an Iran matter, not a Boeing matter. Still could influence tomorrow's numbers.

Update: there are some unconfirmed that this incident was not a problem with the plane. Reports are claiming that the plane was shot down by Iran's defense system.

    Intrinsic value

First question is it a viable way to put a value on a stock? If it is not what other suggestions would you have? Two I know there is many ways to find the value, do you guys have any preferences on what way you find it? Any advice is appreciated thanks.

Square is up >6% this week (as of writing) on the backs of multiple analyst upgrades and a new fee for instant money transfers for sellers. Decreasing tensions in Iran also certainly helps.

    Is hydrogen the future?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 01:58 PM PST

I've seen hydrogen stocks take off recently. But most of them require non-renewable gas to create the hydrogen. Seems like we would still be in the same boat. I have recently heard about HyperSolar (HYSR) that uses the sunlight and saltwater to create hydrogen. Wouldn't this be the more preferable option? Am I missing something here?

I've decided, I'm gonna let my stocks sit

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 03:10 PM PST

I'm 20 years old and because I'm in a fortunate enough position to not have to worry about money (my parents are financially secure), I have a few thousand dollars in stocks I bought over a few years (mostly tech, got lucky and have been pretty profitable). I thought about taking the money I made, putting stop losses, coming up with clever tactics etc. etc., but I have now decided against that. I don't think any decision I'd make is better than flipping a coin and I don't want to get deep into trading, so I'm not gonna gamble by coming up with any tactics. I'll just leave the money that I invested for a long time (7-10 years) and not gonna sell (unless the stocks went uncomfortably high). If I lost all the money, it would be very frustrating, but I'd survive. I'm happy with the prospect of potentially very good returns at the risk of losing a good chunk of money.

There's not really a point to my post, except to maybe ask if there's an obvious better idea that I'm missing. I think because I'm young and financially safe, I'm in the comfortable position to take a few risks that might pay off down the line, so that's the route I want to take.

    submitted by /u/chubby_charlie
    [link] [comments]

Is this a stupid idea? What am I missing?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:56 PM PST

Full disclosure: I am very new to investing.

So I have about $90k sitting in an account doing nothing. What if I took $20k of it and bought 10 shares of Amazon. Let's say these are purchased via a buy order at slightly less than they're trading for currently. For the purposes of this example, let's assume it's trading for $2,010/share and I put in a limit order of 10 shares for $2,000. They're purchased as the price goes through the daily fluctuations and I immediately put in a sell order for 1% higher than what I paid. These are (relatively) quickly sold and I net $200 less whatever I owe for taxes.

This seems like its too good to be true, so what am I missing? As long as I didn't purchase right after an abnormal spike, is it not reasonable to think it wouldn't fluctuate at least 1% higher within a day or two, max? Obviously I'm not going to get rich doing this, but for a few taps on my phone a day, I could get some decent money from this exercise.

Does it makes sense to put stable dividend stocks in my portfolio if they make up a mediocre % of it?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:41 PM PST

Like if I put in 10k€ and I buy 15%MCD and 15%KO I have 2.71% dividends so 81.3€ every 3 months, that doesn't look like much.

Am I wrong? Does it make sense only if you own mostly dividend stocks?
