AMD earnings: Intel’s data-center surge will be a tough act to follow

Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s sales of server chips may get heightened scrutiny following a surprise jump in data-center sales reported by larger rival Intel Corp.

Expectations may have been changed, however, after Intel topped Wall Street estimates for data-center sales by about $800 million. AMD shares fell 2.6% Friday in the wake of Intel's report, as Intel stock enjoyed its best day in two years and hit its highest prices since the dot-com bust.

SWTSX (Schwab Total Market Index) versus VTSAX (Vanguard Total Market Index) -- can you find any meaningful differences between these?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 09:32 AM PST

I know any differences are incredibly small, but it matters because (if all goes well) this will be my main investment for a 40-year IRA account. Little differences might compound over time.

Fastest Way to get News Notifications

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:46 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm seeking resources that can get me important news notifications sent to my phone. I'm looking to react to the news before most of the market to get in on some quick gains. A good example would be reacting to the news that caused TNXP to go up significantly around 7:15am EST on Jan 24.

I know many out there will say it is better to buy on the rumor and sell on the news, but I have found so many examples out there of huge price increases for a few minutes following a news release.

I've heard Bloomberg Terminal could work but I'm not trying to spend that much to get it. I'm looking for cheaper alternatives that focus solely on fast news notifications. Like if a press release happens at 7am, I get notified by 7:01.

What should I do to protect my current position on stocks considering the trending news?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 05:37 PM PST

I am afraid the market is going down because of it, VIX S&P going up and all... The thing is: I was thinking about going day trade selling the benchmark index to protect the money I am going to lose on swing trade. What do you guys think? Is there a better way of protection?

Why does stock correlation value shrink over time?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 09:08 PM PST

    (I'm new to correlation)

I'm attempting to calculate the relationship between several of my stock investments (e.g. A, B, C, D, E and F investments) over time; say from the month of Jan to Dec, 2019.

    However:

    1. I notice, if I did for 12 months, the correlation becomes smaller and smaller e.g. A and C have only 0.4 correlation, and A and D have 0.1 which is pretty non existence.
    2. If I did it by weekly or even two or three months, the correlation gets more prominent, which I can't really explain why e.g. A and C have 0.6 or 0.7 now, A and D have 0.3 or 0.4; and some other correlated relationship emerges, say A and E - I couldn't see this if I did it over 12 months.

Could someone help a newbie understand this?
