Pro tip: If you have a webpage ranking near the top or on the second page of Google SERPs, give it a 2020 update for an SEO boost.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:10 PM PST

Google loves content that gets updated regularly and prioritizes new content over older content. Updating your article or pillar with a new section and adding an "Updated for 2020" or "January 2020" will give it a nice SEO boost.

You might not see results right away (or might if you're in a less competitive niche) but I think right now is a great time to increase traffic for minimal effort.

If you can't think of ways to improve your article, let me know in the comments and I'll try to come up with some ideas.

    Cheers!

Shipping costs are killing my business: HELP

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:12 PM PST

Hi started an e commerce business here in the US about 2 years ago. The concept is loved by everyone in the industry, we are the only ones so far doing it here and in Europe we are extremely successful as customers are not expecting any "free shipping" from anyone.

In the US however, calculating shipping and paying for it has been an ordeal. After trying for the first year to get customers to request a final quote of their order, and not advancing much, we switched strategy and constructed "packages" which had the price of shipping included. That is not working either.

    The facts are as follows:

Single products are light but very bulky (it is cardboard shipped collapsed). Single products selling price range from $12 to $135 and orders are shipped in custom made boxes sized 48x40x7 or 40x40x7 to protect items. This makes it that orders need to have a minimum of 5-10 products to fill in a box and make sense out of the shipping price. Most of my deliveries are residential.

At the beginning, every order was different (I offer a range of 70 different products) so originally I had to "mentally" pack the order, obtain a quote from FedEx and then quote the customer for the final quote. Customers saw the cost of shipping, and freaked out as it averages 40%-50% of the total order cost.

When we moved to the "packages" solution, we factored in an average shipping cost for each package (to contiguous 48 US States). This solution is good for us, but I believe customers don't like it as they lost the ability to construct their own solutions hence we are not selling.

Any help here would be highly appreciated. I know we have a great business in our hands just need to figure out this issue with the shipping costs so as to make our products more attractice from a price perspective. Thanks!

How do I save mine and my late dad’s pizzeria?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 01:16 AM PST

    tl:dr at the end

My dad and I always wanted to open a pizzeria. We talked and dreamed about it for years (as long as I can remember and I'm late 30's). We both loved pizza and wanted to build a place where people could bring their families, play some classic arcade games and enjoy delicious pizza.

Fast forward to a few years ago and my dad passed away. I was completely lost. My dreaming and scheming partner was gone. But I still wanted to fulfill our dream.

A couple years after his passing, I found a little pizzeria in my hometown and managed to purchase it. It needed all the money my wife and I had.

I have invested countless hours and any extra money I manage to scrounge together. And I absolutely love it! It helps me feel close to my dad again.

But I am going to lose it... between the cost of food, rent, advertising and labor, it isn't making it. I've tried cutting hours. I've tried finding ways to cut food costs. I've tried training and retraining staff but they don't seem to care. How do I get staff to care? How do I boost profits to cover costs? I'm not looking to live lavishly. I'm not looking to become the next dominoes. I just wanted to build a hometown hangout that people will remember having some of the best times of their childhood at.

I make great pizza. I am frequently told this by customers from all over the country (we are near a military base and they come from everywhere). We have tons of 5 star reviews on yelp and google with the only real complaint we get being that we're not open enough or that the staff don't seem to know what they are doing.

I need a Mr. Myagi to my pizzeria karate kid.

tl:dr My dad passed away and I am trying to fulfill our mutual dream of running a pizzeria but I am struggling to succeed.

17, small business making a bit, need help.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:16 PM PST

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, I'll keep it short. Basically I have a small business, we own a reward website (users do offers to get giftcards) and we make around 100$ a day. My problem is I can't make a PayPal or bank account for my business, we are current under an LLC and I wanted to ensure no one could "pierce the corporate veil". Thanks! Please let me know if you have any questions or advice. I'm based in the US.

Question about private tutoring in California

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:17 PM PST

Anyone know if I will need a business license to tutor 4-5 students a week, profiting around 6-7k a year? I'm getting a bunch of mixed responses online and there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to this question anywhere. Avvo seems to have mixed responses as well. Any feedback would be fantastic! But yes, I am still filing a 1099 and paying my taxes.

Fish and Chip Shop with fraud books

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:34 AM PST

A landlord friend of mine (20yo) has approached me (19yo) to go halfs on a local 80k fish and chip shop (40k each) although we both work 9-5 jobs. The only way to know if the business actually makes money is either to sit and count the customers as they come in (there is always customers there) bc the owner has told us he has "podged" his books due to tax reasons. Just wondering if you guys had any advice or insight bc my friend and I don't know what to expect but are keen to buy.

TLDR: A friend of mine wants to go 40k in each on a fish and chip shop and have little business owning experience.

I want to open up a hobby/model train store, looking for advice on where to start?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:24 PM PST

Wondering if anyone can give me any advice or which steps I should take, in what order to get the ball rolling on this?

I have a little experience when it comes to drawing up a business plan, business model, and knowing some of the people to talk to (local small business association, city council etc.), but its been years since I have been involved with anything business related. I was along for the ride when 3 of my friends started a (still in op.) Coffee shop/record store. I also took an intro to business course, which I had the best grade on my business plan (final project) which was kinda cool! ...however, I am still a noob, so to speak!

    Thanks!

Costs I imagine I'll incur is washing the old clothes ( I don't know if actual thrift shops actually wash clothes), and fixing them to a point so maybe I need to invest in a sewing machine? I have no idea. Any advice helps!

Market Research Survey For Our Kitten and Puppy Yoga Business

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:51 PM PST

    https://forms.gle/FkiiodPsJnsdtg827

My sister and I regularly attend puppy yoga groups and businesses around Toronto, and volunteer for several animal shelters. Because there are so many sheltered cats and dogs in need of homes, we thought this would be something valuable for people to do on a weekday/weekend.

My sister and I are starting a kitten and puppy yoga business. Our primary focus is to gain clients who are either: looking to adopt a kitten or puppy, spend therapeutic and quality time with animals especially if they do not have a pet of their own, make meaningful connections and memories with their partner/family members (date night or family night), or frankly a place to have fun, relax, pet, play and get a bit of exercise after a stressful day at work or school.

The main focus of the survey is to gather interest in the service, the price potential customers would be willing to pay, and any other services we could provide to add value to them. Please let us know of your thoughts based on the survey, and any additional comments/concerns you may have as to how to add value.

I want to trademark my logos. I have a few questions regarding fonts and colors.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:57 PM PST

Here are the logos I'm referencing: https://imgur.com/a/Zjjw60W

Image 1 - Created from scratch, I usually use this green version but occasionally use black or white. Should I submit the trademark with the green hex color? Or submit the solid black/solid white variation?

Image 2 - The font used is free use for commercial purposes (lemon milk regular). I obviously don't own the legal rights to the actual font design. Does that make it illegal for me to trademark this variation of the logo?

Image 3 - I made this logo in Adobe illustrator when I was 14 years old and still use it. The logo as a whole is original, but the toes and back right leg is roughly sketched from various free use lizard cliparts I had found at the time. The head, body and tail are made from scratch. Will I run into issues, primarily due to the very similar leg?

Image 4 - The font I used is century gothic which is more publicly used and known. Do the laws regarding what I can do when trademarking this font differ from the previous?

    Thanks!

What would you do with $1.25million?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:36 PM PST

Sorry about the click-baity title, but I wanted to know your thoughts on what you think I should do. I've been working really hard for the last 15 years as a software engineer, am currently pulling in $500k/year in a high COL area, and have a current net worth of $1.25 million (which isn't even enough to buy a house here). I think I'm currently at the ceiling of what I can make as an engineer. I've started to think a lot about what's next.

I've always wanted to build something for myself (not programming wise, but business wise). I've also been thinking about football players, how some blow their millions, and how some invest in local businesses and multiply it. I really want to turn this $1.25m into $10m. Think how Ashton Kutcher or Beyonce multiplied their "actor" money.

My trouble is that I don't really know where to get started. I don't know anything outside of pure software engineer skills, and everything I see on BuySellBiz looks kind of pump and dump. I keep seeing people on here say "just get started", but I really don't even know what that means.

Anyway, would appreciate some perspective on what you would do.

Advice on splitting equity for company that one founder has already put a lot more time into

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:16 PM PST

So I am partner A, a person who just graduated from college in May and has been working full time since July at a software company. Partner B has made a few social media "news" accounts for about 3 years now, and has a total of about 600,000 followers. These social media accounts started to make money about a year ago, and make a little over $2,000 a month. Partner B now wants to turn his news accounts into a full time business now that he is graduated, and invited Partner A into the business primarily to build the website but also assist with the direction of the company.

We are at the point where we are talking about how to split the equity, and we are having difficulties. Partner B has been working on his social media brand for 3 years, and has put in a lot of work to bring his brand up to where it is now. Partner B has even payed a few people part time to help create content for the brand. I have been working on building the website since October (part time after work and on weekends), and has gotten it to a point where we are looking for alpha testers in about a month. Partner B just graduated college in December and is working on this full time now, and I am also about to leave my job and work on this full time.

The idea for the company was partner Bs, Partner B has put in a lot of time to build a brand, and has handled a lot of the initial business aspects (LLC and patent filing, projections, etc.). I obviously think partner B deserves more of the company considering all the time and effort he has already put in to developing the brand. My initial idea was a 60B/40A split between us, but partner B countered with a 75B/25A split with an addendum of my equity goes up to 30% if we reach certain milestones in 2.5 years.

I think we have very different ideas about the current state of the company. Partner B believes that because he has been building his social media accounts for 3 years and proven he can build a following, that I am coming on to the company late and he is "giving me part of his company". I believe that because we haven't really made a lot of money, we have the same risks, and we will be putting in the same amount of time into the company in the future, that the company is just getting started now and we are "founding partners".

I just want to know what everyones take is on the situation. Is a 75B/25A or a 60B/40A split more reasonable (or somewhere in the middle)? Is it a good idea for my equity in the company to be raised at a later date if we reach certain milestones and I have proven my value?

I didn't want to leave my job until we have the equity split finalized, and I feel like the difference between what I think is fair and what he thinks is fair is very significant. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

    Social club business account question

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:59 PM PST

I am the treasurer for a club at my university. We are a small club with about 30 people and have a few thousand dollars at our disposal. We raised the money through donations and various fundraisers. Right now the money is sitting in my bank account and I basically just keep track of my personal money from the clubs. In the past the treasurer who was leaving just venmoed the remaining balance to the new treasurer (which obviously is less than ideal) I was wondering if there was a way to set up business type account without actually forming an LLC. I am leaving in a few months and it seems this would make things a lot easier for the incoming leadership to handle the money. From what I can tell there seem to be a few different avenues such as applying for a social club/recreational club vs civic organization. Just wondering what may be the best for this type of situation in terms of taxes, and passing on the bank account to future club leadership.Thank you, I appreciate the help.

Not sure if it matters or not but it is a wellness club, we try to promote student wellness through education, recreational activities, and community service (we ll have a short lecture about depression and suicide, clean up a park, and have a bbq after for example)

Flowchart/explanation of tax various tax forms for running biz/dealing with freelancers?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:38 PM PST

I'm surprised this isn't out there, but can't seam to find a clear explanation of what kinds of forms you should issue to people and when. (like I know the $600 min but beyond that stuff like foreign freelancers or things through UpWork seam tricky.) For example my accountant is telling me to issue W9s to all my service providers, including even my landlord, but I have never had a business issue me a W9/1099 for any of my services? Not sure if they're being overly cautious or everyone else is to lax?

    Non-501(C)3 Donations

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:28 PM PST

    Hi All,

In an effort to give back, I had an idea of donating proceeds from products to related causes. I've read that in order to be deductible for tax purposes, donations would have to be made to an approved 501(C)3. From a business perspective, if I sold backpacks and donated a portion of net proceeds to a non-501(C)3 organization that promoted literacy, is there a way I'd be able to lower my AGI/tax liability? I'd be looking to do this regardless, so if this isn't feasible I totally understand. I just figured it was worth investigating if I could offset some tax liability from the giving.

Should I put employees on a Salary or Hourly?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:26 PM PST

So I'm looking to start a business, and as part of it I really am leaning towards a salary, maybe Salary + Overtime or Salary + Time in Lieu, as long as I pay the Award, I've been told anything extra

Now the Award is for 9 hour days 5 days a week, with a RDO every second day, or 8 hour days 5 days a week.

I was gonna go in the middle and go 8.5 hour days, with hour lunch and half hour Morno's, essentially so essentially a 7 hour day paid at 8.5

5 days a week, you get weekends and public holidays, as well as a stand down every year from 20DEC-5JAN in addition to your 28 days AL under the award.

Part of the reason I was thinking salary is that for me and them, it's a consistent known amount every fortnight that we all know is going on.

I was also planning 10% above award, does this sound fair?

    Edit:

So I have looked up the Award of MA000089

    Hourly Rate: $24.83
    Weekly Rate: $943.60

Which equates to a 38 hour week

On top of this the Penalty Rates are:

    Saturday: $37.25
    Sunday: $49.66
    Public Holiday: $62.08

When I require to inspect items, the award says per hour, I'll go with Hour or Part Thereof, of an inspectors allowance of $35.19/h, which I think is fair, because if you do 1 Hour and 22 Minutes, you're getting jipped an allowance, and that's a bit of a prick move for the cost of a box of beer.

Tool allowance of $11.84 per week

This means that each week, the award stipulates Monday-Friday with Allowances is $‭955.44‬ or a Fortnightly pay of $‭1,910.88‬ which is an annual salary of $‭91,722.24‬ or normalised to a 52 week year, is $‭3,527.78 before tax

So at that pay rate, that's $21,434.14 a year in tax or $‭824.39‬ per fortnight giving them a take home pay of $‭2,703.39‬ as a salary.

However that 38 hour work week will really be a 32.5 hour work week due to Lunch and Morno's breaks.

Also that's pay every fortnight for 26 fortnight, even though you only really work 24 or them with your annual leave, and then the approx 2 weeks you get off over Christmas, so really it's a 23 fortnight work year. Which is about 6 weeks off + every weekend unless shit hits the fan, in which case you'll get the hourly rate on those "Oh shit" days, which I'm thinking might be fair to cut out the Saturday rate and maybe just go Sunday/Public Holiday rates to help motivate people on those days to work and make them less pissed if the do get called in.

Does this sound good for a Mechanic to be paid?

Business Structure and Tax Help (southern california)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:31 PM PST

    Help!

I was recently asked by an old colleague of mine if I would be interested in joining his company (consulting work). He's been in business for about a year, and he's ready to expand given his current workload. When he first started, he opened the business as sole proprietorship and made a profit (billing by the hour, earned what he previously made when he was a salary employee). As expected he racked up expenses as well, and give his business tax structure, his business expenses are mixed in with personal expenses. As of the new year, he needed to change his business tax structure (new laws), which he switched to an S-Corp. I believe it becomes official on February 1st.

Our current discussions revolve around what is the best tax structure to use if i were to come on. I've never owned a business before, but i'm in my mid-30s with no kids, so i can afford to take the risk of starting a new adventure as a business partner. My current questions include:

    1. Who should i speak with about best tax structure for the business? A tax attorney? I want to make sure that both compensation and liability is equally shared, but need to be mindful that as billing hourly as consultants we may pull in different amounts of business profits.
    2. Is it possible to be business partners in an s-corp, or should I chose to be a shareholder rather than partner?
    3. Given all his profits and expenses from the last year, should my colleague dissolve the old company and start fresh so that i'm not liable for any of the past expenses? I also want to make sure he keep all his profits from the year (as does he).

I've tried looking for small business resources, and have requested a consultation with America's SBDC of California, but i want to make sure that i'm seeking assistance from the correct entities, while also not wasting money speaking with people who don't provide the help i need.

Thanks for the help in advance.

    Raising capital question...

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:06 PM PST

    21m SoCal based

Opened my first company @ 19 with friends and obviously even tho the business went well friends and business don't mix. Left that and went into the car business. $80k/year left recently bc of the hours and now i'm stuck at a job that pays dog shit (40k). Now i am more than eager to get back into it. I am looking to get back into the car biz for financial security and start another business... About 10 months ago i was working with someone to start company #2. He was a couple years older. established w big retailer accs. We were working out the nitty details but we ended up splitting. So now I have a full business plan and everything sorted except for $50k in capital. I would be able to do $10k myself in cash. But my question is this.... is it worth throwing it on a credit card @ 0% or doing personal loans? I might have an outside investor but equity partners are long term expensive. I know the market well for the product and know a lot about it. I feel confident and i would only need to do 25% of the inventory to break even (including a generous 10k marketing budget and 5k for misc expenses). Am I crazy and naive for thinking about doing credit cards and personal loans?
