Oregon Health Plan[OHP] Dropped me at 37 weeks pregnant!!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:52 PM PST

I got the letter today, coverage ends Saturday. 2 day notice? The reason given was addition of private insurance, except I had dual insurance when I had first gotten OHP. Private insurance was not covering hardly anything pregnancy related. They were aware of the coverage from the start. I had a hospital visit because I thought I was in labor, and THAT is now a pending $4,000 CHARGE without anyone claiming responsibility for it.

Can they really drop me all of a sudden without notice at 37 weeks pregnant?>!

    [META] Post formatting

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:55 AM PST

I want to preface this by saying that I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here, as I do enjoy this subreddit and enjoy weighing in on relevant topics as a property & casualty insurance agent based in Canada, but therein lies the problem and reason for this thread.

This subreddit isn't limited to one type of insurance or one region for that matter. We seem to get any and every insurance-related topic from all over the world. As a pretty active subreddit I think it could benefit from a combination of post flair and standardized post formatting.

Take r/personalfinancecanada, for example (which I frequent), which covers a broad range of topics (including but not limited to insurance) and which has assignable post flair for topics like Budget, Investing, Insurance, etc.

Or r/tipofmytongue which requires users to stipulate the medium (song, movie, TV show, etc.) and the time period/decade in brackets in the post title.

I think this subreddit could really benefit from a combination of the two.

Post flair could be used to separate and sort by home, auto, commercial, health, benefits, credit protection/mortgage insurance, and other insurance product types and then users would be required to include their region and other pertinent details in their post title.

I think this could go a long way to making this sub more accessible and a bit tidier.

New Driver wanting a sports car

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:35 PM PST

So I just got my license and I'm a new driver but I want to get a v6 Camaro for a first car. My mom is concerned that the insurance will go up so much more because its considered a sports car. Can anyone give me an example of about how much more it would be a month if I buy a sports car instead of a regular car.

Healthcare.gov- website unusable with unusual suffix?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:30 PM PST

My husband is legally listed on his social security card as let's say Joey Joe JoJo II. The only options in the suffix dropdown menu are Jr, Sr, III, and IV. I have had problems on government sites before where putting down the name without the suffix or choosing Jr. have caused a records mismatch.

Should I: Put down Jr. even though it doesnt match his social security card.

Or give up on the project for now and try to get ahold of someone on the phone tomorrow?

Can any other IIs weigh in on how they fixed this?

Car accident pickle - at-fault driver has limited insurance. Please help!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:14 PM PST

    Hello,

I don't know what to do. I would be enormously grateful for any insight or advice!

My vehicle is a 2007 Honda Accord EX-L with 118k miles on it. It was in an accident - it had rained and a Tacoma entering the freeway hydroplaned across all the lanes, slamming into a Mazda first, then broadsiding me on one side (I spun 180 degrees), and slamming into me a 2nd time on the other side. I was (surprisingly) unharmed, but the damage was severe - I have three doors that won't open, a sunken hood, and so on.

The woman who hit me was obviously found to be at fault in the police report, there were witnesses, etc. I did not have collision coverage (long story) and my uninsured coverage is limited to bodily injury, so my insurance told me to file a claim against her insurance directly.

Per KBB, my vehicle was worth about $4,800, pre-accident. I'm in California and she only had the state minimum liability of $5,000 with Alliance/Kemper (a cheapo company that doesn't have a great rep). I got an estimate of around $9k to fix the damage, so I expected a total loss.

After a month, the adjuster got in touch:
"Your vehicle is a total loss. We are unable to settle at this time because we are waiting to receive the damage estimates [for the Mazda] . We have a policy limits issue which means there is not enough available to handle all damages at 100%. Once we have the estimate we will submit to our Limits Department to determine how much we are able to offer everyone. Everyone needs to sign and return the releases before we can issue payment."

I feel like I'm going to get screwed unless I have a strategy. I went to cashforcars.com, but since my vehicle is now severely damaged and will be considered "salvaged", was offered a paltry $560. I did a lot of research, but still have major questions:

    1. Is there some rule that the Mazda gets a higher share of the available $5k because it got hit first? If I get a crap offer (say, $700 or some other BS), couldn't I counter-argue that if both our damages exceed $5k, I'm entitled to half the pot? Is it reasonable to argue for a 50-50 split? Is there a way to pressure my adjuster before they come up with an offer so she knows I mean business?
    2. I've read horror stories about lowball offers for total losses and how I should counter-offer to get near the real value. But how do I even negotiate considering the $5k cap for both cars? If I provide comps for similar vehicles in my area, they can say, "Comps are immaterial, we warned you there wasn't enough and this is what the limit allows" (even if they're lying).

I have the info for the owner of the Mazda. Could I reach out and ask how much he's offered, and then use that against Kemper? "You guys offered him a repair of $3k, but are only offering me $700. So don't tell me you've reached the limit". Alternatively, can I ask for transparency in what is being offered to all parties?

    1. How many counter-offers are normal; at what point can I honestly believe it's their final offer? They're going to claim their hands are tied by the limit, whether that's true or not. How much can I push them?

    2. If I do sue them, would I only sue the at-fault driver, or the driver AND her insurance company? I would try to do it in small claims court, since I don't want to spend a bunch on a lawyer for such a relatively small (yet for me, necessary) amount.

If I can include the insurance company, under what grounds might that be? Bad faith for refusal to settle for a fair amount? Might they be willing to offer a little over her limit to avoid a suit?

I'm worried because even if I won a judgement (I have all the proof on my side), the at-fault driver is a Guatemalan lady who doesn't speak English and was driving without a license. Even assuming she has money or assets, I hear that it's virtually impossible to collect on a judgment, have wages garnished, etc. So suing could be a crazy roll of the dice, even with all the proof on my side.

    1. Can I negotiate privately with the at-fault driver? I speak fluent Spanish, so once the insurance makes their offer, could I approach her in a civilized way and say,

"Your insurance is offering X, which is insufficient per KBB value by Y. That leaves me with no choice but to sue you - I have everything I need to win, ask for your license to be taken away, get assets, garnish wages, etc. If you force me to sue you, I have to decline the insurance payment (it comes with a waiver), so you're on the hook for the full amount. However, I can accept the insurance payment, provided you make things easier for me by giving me something extra on top of that; I'll sign the waiver and all your troubles go away."

I don't expect her to fork out thousands, but *something* to mitigate my losses..

What would you guys do? I'm very worried. I've been shopping for a used car, but it's hard to budget without knowing how much I can expect for my vehicle.

Sorry for the long story and thanks for reading. Thanks so very much for your help!

[NC] Tree damaged neighbors property. Says I was notified prior (false). Question about his ins subrogation dept request.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:15 AM PST

    Greetings!

I live on a couple acres of heavily wooded land in North Carolina.
I have a neighbor on the far side of my property. And during a heavy wind/rain storm (Jan 10, 2020), a tree fell onto his property, damaging his house, car, and boat.

The night it occurred, he came up to let me know. I went down there with him to see, at which time he said that it looked like it was a rotted out. The extent of what I said that evening was, "Wow," "That must've been scary," and I gave him my phone number in case he needed anything.
This was the first time we'd spoken in 5 years.

His insurance's subrogation department has since contacted me, asking for my homeowners insurance policy number. They also said that my neighbor had previously made me aware that the tree was rotten and posed a risk. This is a lie, either from my neighbor or from his insurance company...not sure that it matters.

Note: The previous conversation (5 years ago) was to recover a fedex package his teenage son had stolen just after we moved in. It was a testy encounter, and basically the reason we haven't spoken since. There was absolutely no discussion of any trees, ever.
In addition, it is on a far part of our property that we never go near (their house is effectively on another road), and do not see and cannot see from the part of our property that we live on. So aside from no verbal communication regarding the tree, there has never been any written, mailed, or digital communication regarding this tree.

I explained all of this (minus the theiving son) to his insurance agent. They said that they just want to file a claim with my insurance company, and that they'll open an investigation. They also said that the claim will most likely be declined. Nothing to worry about.

    But is that right?
If I give them my policy info and they file a claim, will they just move forward with the lie saying that I was previously informed of the tree's condition?
Is giving them my information required? Or can I wait and see what happens?
I don't want to be difficult, but even more, I don't want a lie about informing me to make me/my insurance responsible.

    And or course...Am I responsible? =)

    I appreciate any input!

Total loss adjuster gave me fabricated numbers (California)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:28 PM PST

    Hello,

I recently met with an accident and my car was totaled. Luckily, I had a "New car added protection" plan which was supposed to reimburse me at most 1) A new vehicle of the same make/model or 2) if such vehicle is not available, then a similar vehicle's price but not to exceed 110% of MSRP of the insured car.

In my case, it is case 2. Mine was a 2018 model and my trim is not available in 2019. Instead of considering the MSRP(say $28,800) of my vehicle from the original window sticker, they evaluated it's market value by comparing the vehicle to the same make and model but a different newer trim. It is cheaper than my car's MSRP(like $26,000). Why did they do that ? The policy says "MSRP of your insured car" not "market value" !!

After this they gave me a figure and said that is 110%($28600) of my vehicle's worth. They sent me documents to sign as soon as they sent me a check. I would have happily taken this, if not for the $200 difference. This made me think something was not right. I asked my adjuster and he said my vehicle's MSRP was determined to be $26000, not more. I asked him how they can decide a 2018 model vehicle's MSRP today. It is not mentioned in the policy that they re-evaluate. He kept saying they have a method to contact my dealership and get the right price. He tried to preach me that vehicle's deprecate in value and I shouldn't whine about $200.That's why I bought the protection, duh!!. After a long discussion I asked him to show me documents where my dealership gave the new MSRP of my car.

He sent me a third party evaluation document which didn't seem 100% fair but acceptable. They did not contact my dealership as he mentioned. They just took the MSRP data of a single car from a dealer's ad, close to my zip code. This isn't an issue by it's own but he lied to me about it. But that's not the only thing he lied about. My car was valued to be $2000 more than what he told me!!

If they did this to me they could've done this to many unsuspecting customers. What should I do here ? Does any of it raise any red flags ? Were they supposed to consider my car's original MSRP ?

Motorcycle accident, should I file a claim?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:26 PM PST

I was riding with my friend, to keep it short, a car cut my friend off which caused my friend to swerve into my lane. I'm new to riding so my reaction was to slam on the brakes but my front tire ended up touching his rear tire causing my bike to become unbalanced which resulted in me being thrown off the bike at like 60-70mph. I got really bad road rash as a result of rolling for like 30-40 feet or so. Ripped pants, motorcycle jacket, and gloves. Also, I lost my GoPro that was attached to my helmet. My bike took all the damage on the left side, mainly fairings and a few other metal parts but no mechanical problems.

I sort of have full coverage minus uninsured but I'm not sure if I should file an insurance claim for the damage to my bike and the loss of my GoPro. I don't really want my rate to increase astronomically as I'm already paying a lot. Any advice?

Can my employer make money by charging me more for insurance than it costs them to provide it?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:48 PM PST

Employers aren't allowed to take more that 9.5%, but what if that is more than the cost of the insurance? Are they allowed to profit off me in this way?

I started looking at my employer provided insurance and noticed they are collecting almost 4x the national average of the COMBINED employer/employee insurance cost.

    Any help is appreciated!!

    Progressive Claims Adjuster Trainee Question

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:07 PM PST

    Hi all!

I completed one hire view interview and a video chat interview for a claims adjuster trainee position earlier this week. The person doing the hiring told me I would hear back next week. I just wanted to ask if anyone else who applied for the position was offered a job on the spot or if they had to wait for a formal offer. I was so nervous that I feel like I completely failed to use the STAR method in how I answered one of my questions. The interviewer was friendly and completely professional, but didn't mention anything about start dates, and kind of skirted the questions. The dodgy nature made me feel like maybe I wasn't under honest consideration. Anyone have any stories to share?

Vasectomy Coverage versus Tubal Ligation coverage

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:10 AM PST

For the last year and a half I've been told by three different major health insurance companies that I can get a tubal ligation surgery covered 100%, with no co-insurance and no copay (same coverage for all three companies); however, a vasectomy required either a $800 co-insurance payment, a $500 deductible, or wasn't covered at all. I can only assume that this is reflective of industry standard. Can someone tell me why our system is designed this way? Are there medical insurance company's that cover the cost of a vasectomy 100% (with no co-pays/insurance required)? A tubal is a much more invasive procedure (if done outside of a c-section) and requires more recovery time whereas a vasectomy is minimally invasive, and has a very short recovery time - it doesn't make sense that a vasectomy wouldn't be covered the same way a tubal procedure would be.

Should I purchase non owner insurance if I will be overseas for at least 2 years?

I'm currently serving in the US military and have been stationed overseas. I will be here for at least 2 years, so I sold all my vehicles in preparation. Should I look for non owner insurance while I'm stationed out here? I plan on purchasing a used vehicle once I return to the US.

[AUTO] [CA, U.S.] Which insurance company to file a claim under when you are not-at-fault?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:51 PM PST

To make this short, I got crashed into on Monday by a dude in his company car on the freeway. He merged right into me right before the 710 N on-ramp. He admitted fault, saying he didn't see me (plus I have the dashcam video). I'm mainly wondering whose insurance to file the claim under? I have been googling and have seen some people say to do it under the at-fault person's insurance and not yours (I guess so your premiums don't go up?) and some saying to file it under yours. Wondering if there's a difference to filing under one and not the other. First car crash so I need the advice. Thanks for any help!

    My insurance: GEICO

    His company's: Mercury Insurance

Not sure if it matters but the damage is very minor because I managed to stop the car before he completely dented it. At first, he wanted to pay for it, but he hasn't reached out since (plus it's less convenient for me to do so). Also, I looked it up and saw that the company's insurance should pay if their employee is at fault?

Insurance adjuster (collision) considering a career change

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:38 PM PST

Looking to possibly switch to the shop side of things. Would really like to be a service advisor at a dealership. Very tired of fighting customers on unrelated damages and issues they have with their policies. It would be nice to be the guy that says your insurance said no, not the person saying no. Simply writing for the damages I see would be a dream come true. The things I have to do to justify replacing parts is laughable. Feeling the insurance burnout.

I have looked up service advisor salaries and its all over the place. I have had people tell me they can make up to 100k. Then i check glassdoor and it shows 40-50k a year. I live in a very large city and any ideas on salary range would be helpful. I just want to write accurate estimates and guide repair plans. For reference I have been working as an adjuster just over 4 years.

If any current advisors could give me a run down of a typical day it would be appreciated. I work with techs every day at dealers and body shops so writing estimates isn't a problem. I am sure it comes with its own unique challenges. Any former insurance adjusters want to chime in? Would be nice to hear from someone who has done both. I am looking for whatever insight you can provide. Thanks

    Baby on Board. Job change

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:32 PM PST

Hi. So we are expecting our first child in about 6 weeks and I think I have an opportunity with a company I have been trying to get on with for years. I have been at my current job about 10 year and with new management it is pretty miserable. My wife works but her insurance is through me and can't enroll in her insurance mid year.

If I do get the new job I will not have insurance for 30 days. What are my options? Can I get COBRA after I give my notice?

I want my wife to be able to keep her doctors and have insurance until the baby is born.

Timing is terrible. The company I work for is a sinking ship and this is a great opportunity but have to take care of the family. Thanks for any suggestions!

Travel Insurance - I stopped taking antidepressants

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:25 PM PST

So I'm planning to go abroad next week and I'm sorting out travel insurance and my parents keep telling me I'm uninsurable so I don't know what to do.

I have access to my medical records online so I can check all this. Almost two years ago I went to the doctors with anxiety and depression, I was put on anti depressants but I only took them for about two months. I decided I didn't want to take them anymore and didn't book a follow up appointment.

On my travel insurance I declare my anxiety and depression (I have no other medical issues now or before) but state I'm currently not taking medication. My parents say because I just decided to stop taking it myself, and the doctor didn't officially say then no one will insure me.

When I look at my medical records it says in July 2019 my medication template with that anti depressant ended. Which I'm guessing is because I didn't come back to get more prescriptions?

I don't have long, I have a week until I leave. Do I ask my doctors? Speak to the travel insurance?

How do you find an insurance broker?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 03:19 PM PST

How do you begin searching for them? Just type into google "Insurance Broker [insert city here]"? How do you vet any of them? Is there a database like CFP.net where they vet brokers similar to how they "vet" financial planners' and their fiduciary responsibility?

Let's pretend that this is in a new area you just moved to and you don't know of friends/family that can help you out. Therefore, please refrain from stating "friend/family referral" to maximize the search results?

    Insurance claim question

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:30 PM PST

I took out a health insurance policy for my trip to Europe. While there I contracted an ear infection in Budapest and had to pay for some medical treatment. As such, I want to claim back the expenses. I took out a policy with Tokio Marine. While filling out the claim form, I came across this question: 13B. Have you had any ailments, diseases, illnesses, conditions or injuries, or have you taken any medications during the last five years?

Are they seriously suggesting that you remember and write down every time you had a cold or any medical attention in the past 5 years? This seems so absurd to me.

Am I paying too much for car insurance?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:01 AM PST

Okay so I am a 20 year old female. I got into an accident July of 2018 (while on my dad's insurance). That is the only accident that I had (I rear ended a car causing a 3 car pile up-not my brightest moment). I received a ticket for the accident and got a lawyer to get the points off of my license. The points went away (though the ticket still went on my record). Since then I was put on my own insurance. I only have liability and I am paying a little $300 a month with Progressive. I even have the good grades discount, as I am a college student. I looked online and every other insurance company wants to charge me MORE (upwards of $400 a month). I have checked with Progressive to be sure that there weren't any mistakes, there aren't. So is this normal for my circumstance? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Given an injury offer today from car accident. What's the likelihood I can get something closer to what I want given my situation?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:15 PM PST

Hi all - I made a post about 2 weeks ago which you can see here if you want the full details: https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/epqp94/car_accident_6_weeks_ago_in_nc_not_at_fault_neck/

Long story short I was in an accident the weekend after Thanksgiving - so about 8 weeks ago - and was determined to not be at fault. About two weeks ago my insurance rep asked me if I wanted to set up an injury claim for my whiplash injuries since I still have persistent neck and lower back pain, and gave me the at-fault insurance adjuster's info. I did as the person who replied to me suggested - I called the at fault party's insurance company and left a voicemail for the adjuster.

I finally heard back today, two weeks after my initial call, and got an offer of $500 + my two urgent care bills. I was told that since soft tissue injuries usually resolve on their own within 60-90 days, and so much time had passed since the accident, that they can't offer $$ towards physical therapy - which is ideally what I wanted.

Naturally I was a little annoyed because two of the weeks that had passed was cuz it took so long for this guy to get back to me, but whatever. I get that it's also my own fault for listening to the urgent care doctors who told me to wait a few weeks and see if I still was having pain, and that it didn't occur to me that I could do an injury claim like this sooner. I guess at the time I figured insurance would've told me to wait it out had I tried to do something sooner. This is also my first time going through a process like this.

I told the insurance adjuster I'd get back to him. In the meantime, I know that I can negotiate, but what're the chances that I might be able to negotiate an offer that works a little better for my situation? Or is this probably as good as I'll be able to get? I honestly don't care about getting a payout like the $500 or anything like that - I just want to be able to receive treatment to the extent that a PT thinks would be appropriate.

Thanks in advance for your guidance!
