Looking to take my employees on an all inclusive trip if we hit our 2020 goals, anyone done this?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 05:29 PM PST

I've got a total of 20 people that I'd be paying for, and I'd be looking at a cruise or an all inclusive in Cancun. We have a LOT of air miles saved up from years past so the flight part is handled. I've got an email into my travel agent regarding this but I was curious if anyone else has taken their employees on a company wide retreat with about 20 people and if you had any advice on where or what to do/not to do. Thanks!

Home address / lack of business address issues for sole proprietorship

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 11:45 PM PST

I want to start a small business that is literally just me and a laptop. There are clients but I only need to talk to them in a normal indoor voice (so no noise) and there won't be anyone or any deliveries coming to where I'm living. The problem is a) both homes that I could use as a business address have mortgages and I'm sure those mortgages don't allow a business to be run from the home - and the houses are also zoned residential so I'd at least have to ask permission from the city to run the business too, and b) I don't really want to use either of those addresses as a business address because I'd like privacy.

All the advice online says to get a PO Box, which isn't even allowed for DBA paperwork, or they say to get a UPS Mailbox service address, which I'm sure isn't allowed on DBA paperwork either.

In my state, I'm able to open a sole proprietorship without any paperwork, unless I'm using a fictitious name. Now, I guess I am kind of using a fictitious name. I found a domain that I like and I've set it up (but haven't made it public yet). But the domain is general and just says what it is I'm doing, like, if you were selling used cars and you bought "used cars" dot com, it's like that. If my business has my last name in it, I might not need to fill out the DBA form (in some states this is the case and I can't find information about it for my state). But I think putting my last name will sound dumb, and I lose my privacy completely that way too. If I'm using a personal Paypal account and billing people using my real name, could that show that maybe I'm not using a fictitious name? The problem is I have a banner with the fictitious name (which is also the domain name) at the top of the site, and the e-mail I'm using will show the sender as that name as well. Is there a way I can get around this? I want to start this really badly and I can't afford to rent an office or something like that. It's also completely unnecessary because it's just me and a laptop.

Will I get in serious trouble (like a criminal record, something beyond a fine) if I'm running a sole proprietorship under a fictitious name and haven't filled out the required DBA form? I'd appreciate any advice on any of these issues.

    Purchasing online website vs brick/mortar

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:22 PM PST

    https://www.websiteclosers.com/website-view/website/1176/

Would a sba 7a loan qualify here? It's only been in business a few years.

I was going to purchase a brick n mortar business, ie. Food or gas station, but I started thinking why not invest elsewhere. It seems like there's a lot more risk with a ecommerce company. Meaning short term history, competition is more widespread.

Anyone made a large acquisition of an online business without direct experience running one? My background is b2b sales/management.

Schedule K-1/1120S for S-Corp formed late 2019 (no income generated)?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:13 PM PST

I formed an S-Corp at the end of 2019 (early December). The business generated no incomes or losses during this time (I was expecting it to form in early 2020 but it filed faster than I expected).

Will I still need to file a Schedule K-1 and 1120S at this time? I'm concerned that this would cost quite a bit from my accountant to file this extra return despite the fact that it would basically be all zeroes.

How to get a drop-shipping business up and running?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:46 PM PST

I have a domain name. I made a pretty basic logo. I want the niche to be women's fashion, I want it to be somewhat classy but mostly cute, casual wear. I'm using Oberlo for drop-shipping and Shopify to host the online store. I don't have many products up because, to be honest, I got frustrated with the collection I had and decided to start over. I'm working on the menu system. I have a Facebook page but I kind of put working on it on hiatus while I redo the site. I have business cards. I ordered t-shirts with the logo on them. I really want it to be successful but I haven't made a sale so far. The website is www.emeraldfashionboutique.com. I think the main thing I really need help with is deciding what products to put in the store. I don't know who to ask to help me with that.

For those of you leasing a retail location, how did you go about it?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:32 PM PST

Looking to lease a retail location for my new business. I have a couple of locations around me that I like that are for lease but not sure how to go about contacting the leasing companies. For those of you that have retail or flex locations that you are leasing out, how did you get started? Do I need to work through an agent/broker? Any help is appreciated.

Coffee shop owners: what's the best way to grind large quantities of beans?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:53 PM PST

I'm starting a cold brew business and am aiming to brew ~250 cups of cold brew per day: requires grinding nearly 20 pounds of beans per day if all goes well. It's an immense quantity and have no idea how to best handle it - anybody have experience/recommendations?

Appreciate it any advice you may offer!

Which Employee Handbook Worked For You?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:49 PM PST

Hey Everyone, we only have four employees, but I want to implement an Employee Handbook when we return after our Holiday break. I am in California and I need one I can customize. I am not looking for a free service, just a tried and true service.

I've been looking online the past few weeks and CalChamber's looks decent and current, but I can't find any real reviews or feedback on their product.

Which resource did your company use?

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

    Shop Questions

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:35 PM PST

Hello! I am new to this sub and to owning an online shop. I currently have two online clothing boutiques that mostly provide products with drop shipping and some physical inventory items. One is a women's boutique and the other is a children's clothing boutique.

We just launched both sites last week and I've been getting a lot of traffic to the Facebook pages, but barley any traffic to the online stores. I'm trying to figure out what I could be doing better at getting more traffic to the online shops. I have Facebook ads for both up and running and doing well, but it's not pulling many to the actual stores.

I have posted the links to both sites, if anyone would like to give me some insight as to what I can improve it would be greatly appreciated.

    Tordy&Co. (Women's Boutique)

    Fiona Sofia (Kids Boutique)

Thank you and have a happy and healthy New Year!

    Reviews in Google Search

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:02 AM PST

My small business has hundreds of 5 star reviews across every platform. However, there is one 1-star review that always shows up on the first page of our Google search results. It's on TripAdvisor, where we have 50+ 5-star reviews and one single 1-star review. For some reason, this review is on the first page of our Google results.

I'm not upset about the review itself, but the fact that it shows up on the first page of our Google results. Anyone have any advice on what we could do about this?

Happy New Year everyone! I am very interested in opening a business that can be ran from home, from a skill or skills that can be learned, and can be automated eventually. What are some businesses like this that I could start, that would be very valuable to either people or small businesses?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:46 PM PST

The goal is to learn a skill that has a future and wont be outdated for many years, that is valuable to most businesses. I could start the business solely from home, and eventually train people to do it and sub out work so that the business can run on its own, to an extent.

For example could I do this with learning code, SEO, marketing, etc? What other skills would you recommend?

I appreciate any advice offered, and everyone in this sub has been so helpful with all of my questions. Happy New Year again, and thanks for the advice!

Setting up small business. Where to start?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 10:03 AM PST

I have a few casual side gigs that bring in a small amount of money (writing and editing work, plus woodworking projects that I sell). I'm looking to scale these up a bit this year and would like to be "by the book" tax-wise. I can combine my writing/editing work plus woodworking under the same corporation, correct? Is an LLC best for this? What's the first step for setting up something like this?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

LLC in New York - never filed taxes, zero income or business done

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:53 AM PST

What are my options? should I just dissolve? Do I have to file a federal tax return or state tax forms? I registered two years ago but has always been dormant.

I received a letter from the NY DoS - not sure what to do next for the least amount of money.

My Wyoming LLC was Administratively Dissolved and I don't wish to Revive it. Do I need to do anything else?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:18 AM PST

I incorporated a Wyoming, LLC with a registered agent roughly 2 years ago and never did anything with it. I failed to file my annual report or pay the annual fee and about 6 months back now received notice that my LLC had been administratively dissolved. I no longer wish to have this LLC and I'm fine with it being dissolved and don't want to revive it but I'm curious if I have to take any other action regarding this dissolution. It seems like its just done and I don't have to do anything, but I'm not sure if its above board and don't want there to be any negative consequences down the road. Is there a problem with my LLC being dissolved in this way?
