Update : Police officer is divulging information about the assault I was a victim of to my employees. [PA]

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 05:36 AM PST

Update as a thank you for some useful advice received here.

So as suggested by some commenters here, I went to the police station and asked to speak with the Chief. He received me in his office and I exposed the situation. He was very professional and respectful and took my concerns seriously. He confirmed that gossipping about cases to a member of the public, outside of official channels, would indeed be a serious breach of the department's policy. He explained that I'd be within my rights to file a complaint and if I did, there would be an investigation into the matter and if found in violation of the rules the officer would be disciplined. He also eased my worries that physical evidence, like the video, could be retrieved from the case file and showed to anyone outside of official channels, as anyone doing trying to do this would be easily identified. He said the video would be something they'd decline disclosing even through officials channels, so he couldn't imagine an officer doing this.

This was a huge relief and I told him that what I wanted above all was for the rumors to stop as they are causing me a great deal of anguish. I added that I would be willing not to file an official complaint if I could have his word that he would talk to his officer, and, if this guy really did start the gossip, (which, as far as I can tell from the Chief's reaction, doesn't seem too far-fetched), give him a good ass-chewing, make him undersand the consequences of his actions and warn him never to do that again. He promised me he would so we agreed on this. It's easier on me as it puts an immediate resolution to the issue and avoids further confrontation, and it and saves him the hassle of dealing with a complaint.

So in the end the whole situation is very fucked up and should have never happened, and I still have to deal with the very unpleasant fallout of this officer's carelessness, but at least it was solved "amicably". That's the blessing (and the curse) of small towns, I guess...

Edit: to those of you that PM me calling me a coward, try to put yourselves in someone else's shoes sometimes. You think I don't want that officer punished? YesI hate what he did and sure I'd like to file a complaint. Does it feel cowardly? Yeah, bitterly so. But when you do business locally in a small town, you handle things smoothly, because when you don't life becomes exceedingly difficult. There are 30 jobs on the line, my livelihood and the company I spent 20 years building and I won't risk that. Sometimes you just choose the "least bad" solution that solves your problem and you live with it. Besides I trust the Chief, and it's not like I can't file a complaint if the issue goes on. And since you ask, I didn't have to fire my employee because she had the decency to quit.

My company sent out a notice saying anyone who is caught participating in protests against war in Iran will be fired.

I work in Virginia for a company that is a federal government contractor.

We received an e-mail saying that anyone who participates in any of the upcoming protests against potential invasion of Iran will be fired without appeal.

Is that legal or can we report it to someone?

My fathers ex wife refuses to give me vehicle, tried selling it on secret Facebook group and has it chained down.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:14 AM PST

Some explosion happened with my dad and his soon to be ex wife. I was living there shortly and little did she know that the car she believed was my dads is really mine. I have had the original title for two years and the night that this whole mess happened I tried talking civil to her.

She refused to give me the vehicle saying she was gonna sell it to hurt my father. She let me take a few things but when I went to get my stuff... She promised that she would let me get stuff out of the room but no mention of the car. So for a few weeks I figured that I would let her cool down.

Two days ago we discovered from an ex neighbor that a tow truck was trying to haul the car out. My dad and I rushed down there to stop it and we did. My dad was arrested for the charges my stepmother threw at him to stop him from her selling his things. So ive been dealing with that.

Later that night we discover that she put an ad on facebook saying the car was hers, the guy that came to buy the car called her out on the shadiness of her ads and we have photo proof from this Facebook page that she intended to sell this vehicle.

Can I press charges? She went to the slammer for car theft already.

Neighbor stealing my well water, real estate agent involved

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:34 AM PST

(New Mexico) I bought my house and another plot of land next to it 4 years ago(5 acres total). About a year and a half ago my real estate agent sold another property down the road and came to ask me about letting the guy use my well water. Basically he said, "There's already a line running to this other house from my well but it's capped off. Do you want to make a deal with this guy and let him use your water?"

I told the real estate guy no, and then the guy called and asked me himself. I also told him no, not interested. It's $20-30k to dig a well in this area. He can dig his own well if he wants water.

So today, I was having new internet installed, and contractors burying the lines dug through and burst the pipe running to this other house. And yes, there was water running through it. It was never "capped off". So this guy has been stealing my water for a year and a half. And my electric to run the well pump. Not to mention the strain on my pump to run water 500 feet uphill!

I'm wondering how and why the real estate guy knew about this line running from my well to the other property and just never mentioned it. It's not even the neighboring property, there's another large property between mine and the other one.

I'm waiting on a sheriff to file a police report, and I plan to contact an attorney, but I'm not even sure what my damages would be in this situation.

Possible ADA Violation During Traffic Stop

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:59 AM PST

    Location is in Georgia.

I was pulled over by a cop. I am hard of hearing. I have a HoH sticker on the back of my car that is about 3x3". I wear hearing aids.

He approached the passenger's side. With the outside traffic driving past made it was difficult to hear. I tried to touch my mounted phone to open my CC app (Ava) but he was yelling and to me it sounded like he was yelling at me about touching my phone.

Every time I opened my mouth, he would cut me off. I tried to sign "I'm deaf" but he yelled again because I took my hands off the steering wheel. Since I was being yelled at so much, and wasn't understanding everything he was saying, and because it looked like he was about to grab something off his belt I fearfully told him what I thought was my new address and started shaking (I also have PTSD).

    My questions are:

Do I have any legal recourse for how the traffic stop was handled?

How would I go about handling this if I were to hire an attorney? What type of attorney would I need to look for?

Can I keep it? And what do I need to do with the gun (specifically, paperwork/paper trail)?

    Unsellable property affecting Medicaid application

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:44 AM PST

Several decades ago, my parents purchased a plot of land in Arazona marketed as a retirement development. The purchase was about $2,500 at the time. The developer pulled up stakes and left town with everyone's money and never developed the property with utilities, etc.

My father has died several years ago and my Mom has continued to pay the annual taxes which amounts to just a few dollars each year. This property is very close to the southern border, and the development has no utility services. None of the property holders have built anything. All lots in this development have ended up unsalable. My brother has contacted several realtors in the area to try to sell the property. We know it is worth virtually nothing, but we can't get a realtor to even call back as they have no interest in it.

The issue is that she is now 84, moving into an assisted living facility, and will be applying for Medicaid.

    1) How does unsalable property like this impact her application to Medicaid?

    2) How can she get rid of the property? She has no interest in keeping it, but doesn't know how to get rid of ownership of it.

For context, my (16M) parents are considering forcing me to shave my hair that I've been lovingly growing out for well over a year, as a punishment for my behaviors. I am adhering to the dress code at my school, job and every where else I go. Is this legal for them to do? Is there anything I can do about it?

My apartment building doesn’t seem to be taking the garage door not working seriously

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:50 AM PST

I'm in Los Angeles. The garage door to my building has a tendency to just not open sometimes. I've reported this many times both through the maintenance app we use and by directly texting my landlord. It's not an issue with my clicker as many other tenants will try and fail to open the door as well. They continue to close the issue as resolved but it continues to occur. Today will be the second day I've had to miss work this month because the door will not open. Is this grounds to break my lease? What options do I have?

NYC: Is it legal for me to film a neighbor that has been harassing me without their permission in the elevator of our shared apartment building?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:15 AM PST

I've been having some issues with a neighbor of mine. They've been letting their very untrained, growing puppy (about 30 pounds now) run off leash in the elevator and hallway. The puppy does not know how to approach other dogs safely or that not all dogs want to be it's friend. It has also shit in the hallway near both of our doors a few times and they don't clean it. I have the only other dog on the floor, and our front doors are right across from each other (3 feet apart). After mentioning to them that my dog does not like being approached that way and get's defensive/scared, they continued the unleashing behavior. I want to protect my 15 pound rescue so I emailed management letting them know specifically I am worried that my dog will bite theirs in retaliation and I want both animals to be safe, and if they could remind the other tenant of the building rules to have dogs leashed in common areas.

The day after management notified them of the policy, as I stepped out of my apt to get the elevator they immediately came out as if waiting for me specifically (they were wearing shorts, t shirt, in 30 degree weather), proceeded to call me trash twice. I did not respond as I am a 5'3" petite woman and this is a 6'5" man. He then went back inside grabbed his dog and immediately came back out as the elevator arrived and jumped in with me. We were the only two people in the elevator for the ride down. Throughout this ride, this man twice my size repeatedly harassed me threatening to have his dog bite me, telling it to bite me, while holding it up close to my head and calling me trash. It was the aggressive tone and threatening way of doing it that made me uncomfortable. Being asked to follow the rules does not typically trigger this kind of behavior in 30 something adults, so now I'm worried about escalation. I simply said "excuse me?" and he repeated "oh I'm talking to my dog I don't talk to trash like you" and I dropped it since I'm not about to escalate the situation in an enclosed space.

Management has gotten many complaints about them but we all know how hard it is to evict, and they only have 4 months left on their lease. I notified them about the incident immediately and they said they will contact their lawyers but suggested in the meantime to simply wait in my apartment if I hear them in the hallway. I don't want to be bullied into doing this because they don't understand rules and common courtesy, but I also feel uneasy being alone with them. I was wondering if I could legally film them every time I am in the elevator alone with them in case they try to escalate further, especially since management will be contacting them about this issue. And if yes, and they ask me why I'm filming I would love to be able to say a brief sentence such as "I am legally allowed to film you in a public space, and am doing so for my safety after your previous harassment." Please help me!!

(CALIFORNIA) My gyno performed surgery on me after refusing to send me to a specialist and claimed she found nothing wrong with me but a few months later a specialist found severe endometriosis. Do I have any recourse or options here?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 11:37 PM PST

Back in May I decided to have a diagnostic laprascopy done after experiencing severe symptoms of endometriosis for 13 years. I asked my gyno if I could be referred to a specialist for the surgery and she said it wasn't necessary unless the pathology results came back with me having stage 3 or 4. I figured she knew what she was doing so I let her do the surgery and she only looked in my uterus (where endometriosis doesn't grow). She didn't take any pathology samples since my uterus was "clean as a whistle" and there was nothing wrong with me except a bad period even though every month things were getting worse and it got to the point to where my performance at work suffered significantly, I was losing control of my bladder, I wasn't having bowel movements and could barely walk during my period. She knew this but brushed me off.

two weeks post op I found an endometriosis specialist and asked him what he thought of my case. He felt I was misdiagnosed, that the surgery was done incorrectly and he would have to go back in. I had to wait 5 months to heal enough for my body to be able to tolerate it but I went back under the knife for a more complicated procedure this time because it turns out I had stage 4 endometriosis the entire time which was found in my UV junction, bowel, ureters, the outer lining of my uterus, etc. it was in 9 different sites. and my Fallopian tube was completely blocked. I spent 700 dollars out of pocket for the first surgery, 2500 for the second and took two unpaid leave of absences from work (i was self employed the first time and was brand new at my job the second time) so I lost a ton of income.

Is there any way for me to at the very least get my 700 dollars back? My family wants me to sue and I'm unsure if I even have a case.

There have been several times when I've written someone up and I get a call from a board member telling me to delete the letter and ignore it. It's usually because they're friends with the person who got the letter. The thing is, we regularly sue people for the same shit they're telling me to turn a blind eye to.

Can I personally be held liable for not fairly enforcing deed restrictions? I haven't been deleting the letters, I just mark them "OK per [board member]". So there's a record of them.

It pisses me off because I never know when I'm going to get a talking to for writing up someone's friend for junk vehicles on the lawn or for the grass being a foot high. People already accuse us of picking and choosing. I don't live in the neighborhood so I have no personal relationship with any of the residents and I just want to get my job done without getting into trouble.

The Non-Profit Company I work for reduced my rate of pay without notification.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:10 AM PST

I work as a direct support professional working with individuals that have developmental and sometimes physiological disabilities in the state of Ohio. I've had a total of 80 hours reduced to minimum wage by the company without notification as to when and what the disciplinary actions (DAs) were for with the exception of one 32-hour DA. The particular 32-hour in-work suspension was administered due to two late documents. Said documents are meant to be turned in to the designated local office by 8a according to policy; however, this policy wasn't being directly followed as primary billing employee was removed and thus the company had to send for collection of said documents at 7:30a to be brought to another office for processing. My car's starter had become faulty and I was unable to physically bring the documents to my local office until ~3p. On this particular day it was also stated via group message that this office was to be closed until 3p. I was not reached out to by the collecting office employee until 10:47a which was followed by a text conversation including photos and information of said documents required to be turned in. Collecting party still requested I physically turned in physical documents, which I did so. The last message I received from collecting party was "Got it." with no addressing potential DA against me.

What can I do that would be most beneficial for my fellow employees present and future alike? I've been told that if I write an apology letter to the company admitting my fault I can reclaim the funding from the 32-hour suspension, but it feels wrong. If more employees are wrongfully penalized I will only be reaffirming the company's actions and policies.

    Gym randomly increased my monthly.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:19 PM PST

To my understanding, they're breaking their agreement i signed. Is there any legal actions i can take?

So my gym randomly increased my monthly rate without notifying me. My agreement stated an increase can occur annually by $5 to my monthly rate with a 30 day initial notice to my email about the increase. My monthly got increased by $10 and i did not get notified by email as they stated. I spoke with the manager and she offered to lower it by $5 to due to my annually going in affect.

I kept letting the manager know that the increase is void because i haven't been at the gym for a year(I'm on a month to month agreement 8 months in), i haven't been notified of the increase, the initial increase was $10 not $5 so that's void? them wanting to decreasing it by $5 is just a loop hole around the agreement because the increase is void to begin with.

The manager doesn't want to honor me the initial rate and gave me this "$0.16 cent a day increase for the gym, isn't the club worth it at all?" They're a corporation not a help a child foundation...

    Can that be patented?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:54 PM PST

I've been making and selling baby clothes out of used men's shirts in order to make some side money and spread the word about sustainable fashion. Today, someone reached out to me and said she had a patent on making dresses from men's shirts and that she would have her lawyer send over her patent number. It seems crazy to me that one person would be able to own this idea since "upcycled" clothing is nothing new and all over Pinterest. Does that seem legitimate to you? Are people given patents for existing and common ideas? I'm in California and she appears to be somewhere else in the US if that helps.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:47 AM PST

So a few months ago I got hit by a car on my bike. Woke up in the hospital. No memory of it happening.

Went to the traffic case today. Fortunately, it was the State vs The Guy Who Hit me, with me as the witness.

He didnt show, it was just me and the cop.

I couldn't identify the cop because I got knocked out completely at the incident. Case dismissed.

I mean, what does it bother me that he doesnt get a ticket, but it doesn't feel right.

Could I have done anything different? I simply told the truth under oath. Thanks.

Just Found Out: My Whole Life is a Lie

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:20 PM PST

State: North Carolina County: Mecklenburg I am 20 years old and no longer have a relationship with my mother or her husband. For the past 20 years my mother has told me that the man she is married to is my father, however everyone in the family told me that just was not true. They got married when I was 10 and my mother had his name added to my birth certificate and had my last name changed to his. Recently, in an effort to find out the truth, I had the man the rest of my family suspected to be my father DNA tested, he was a match. I would like to remove my mom's husband from my birth certificate so that I can add my actual father. And then proceed to change my last name to my biological fathers. Am I able to remove my moms husband from my birth certificate and add my biological fathers without having to reach out to my mother or her husband?

memphis - Had unprotected sex with stripper, she is claiming she’s pregnant. Where can I go from here?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 11:45 PM PST

This is a real story this is not satire. Long story short - I frequent a strip club in Tennessee where I have my regular girls. They were not there when I visited about 4 months ago, so I called for a girl I've seen a few times. I have never had sex with this girl and never discussed sex. However about 4 months ago I visited the club which was closing. Being a regular they let me in and my only option was X. I was absolutely obliterated. X and I talked for about 10 minutes and said we couldn't dance in the main room and took me to VIP. Here, X told me she wanted to make some real money. I knew what she means and told her "I've done too much coke I can't possibly get hard". She immediately pulled down my pants and started giving me oral. I pulled my pants back up and told her I just want her to dance. She did it again and wouldn't stop. Repeatedly told her to stop. She ended up "riding" me , and while so unknowingly stealing about $400 from my hoodie pocket. I finished inside her as I was abhorrently drunk and she said "you gonna have my babies". Fast forward 4 months she is saying she's pregnant and keeping it and will pursue child support if I do not raise the baby. What can I do here? Can I file a rape report? I know how silly this sounds but is true. I need real advice here. I feel like no police will take me seriously and definitely no one in this club will testify

Thanks for the answers guys was just trying to prove a point of bias against males being raped tho loool

Threatened to be taken to court.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 02:29 PM PST

Recently I've bought a set of windows and doors for my house that cost about $24,000. The company said they'd deliver and install them in a couple days but they didn't show up. A month later they're actually installing everything but they brought the wrong door and have yet to install a couple windows. However they're requesting the payment in in full. The contract says that they can request the payment when the materials are delivered.

I know I'm screwed for the instillation despite them saying they'd do it. However they still delivered the wrong door. Do I have legal grounds to deny the payment based on the fact they dilivered the wrong materials? I do plan on paying them full if i get the correct door of course but everything up untill now has been awful. Dispite them giving me the wrong materials they're saying they'll take me to court if I don't pay tonight.

I appreciate any information and help.

[California] Doctor shared sensitive information with my parents

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 02:06 PM PST

TLDR: While I was in the hospital and unconscious, Doctor (who was already a jerk) revealed a sensitive and totally unrelated medical diagnosis to my parents; should she face consequences?

About 5 years ago I contracted meningitis and ended up unconscious in the hospital for a few days. My parents flew out to see me, and it was dramatic, but I made a quick recovery.

In the course of trying to figure out what was wrong with me, the doctors did a lot of tests, and they discovered I was HIV+.

My memories of these days are impressionistic, but one of the more vivid (yet still impressionistic) ones is being awoken in a haze by "Doctor J" who said, "looks like he's awake" and then started really aggressively barking at me, "did you know that you have HIV? Have you been having sex with many partners? How many partners have you had sex with? Do you know that unprotected sex is dangerous?" Later when I actually regained consciousness, I quickly began to dislike Doctor J because she was extremely brusque and snide.

So, recently I learned from a close family friend that Doctor J had a conversation with my parents. She revealed my HIV diagnosis to them - effectively, before it was revealed to me - and told them that they "urgently needed" to take me back to my home state, because people do not deal well with this diagnosis and I would "end up a homeless junkie living on the street." (I was 30 at this point, multiple degrees, thriving career, and had never even smoked a cigarette.) According to the friend, who heard this from my mother secondhand, the doctor was adamant and she freaked my parents the fuck out.

I have always been a private person and don't share a ton of things with my parents, so it was shocking to learn from this friend that my mother was beside herself for weeks, and the friend even colloquially used the phrase "PTSD." My parents and I have not talked much about this, and honestly right after I got out of the hospital I was back in the swing of my life, so I was stunned to find out they had been going through this psychodrama that I didn't know about for years.

Did Doctor J do anything illegal or censurable by whoever censures doctors? The more I think about it the more it upsets me that this all happened while I was out cold in a hospital bed. I have no damages, I just want to know my options for reporting the doctor's behavior and whether such a report might lead to repercussions for her.

[WV] If a friend somehow paid me with stolen money, would I be accountable, or him?

A few months ago, I paid for a friend's concert ticket with the promise of being reimbursed in full by the end of the year. He told me a few weeks ago he didn't have much money, and would need some more time. Fast forward to a few days ago, and he sent me a payment over PayPal (via friends and family since it wasn't exactly a good or a service), and thanked me again for giving him extra time to pay me.

I didn't think much of it at the time, but now I'm starting to think it's suspicious he got the funds that quickly when he recently had nothing.

If for whatever reason he somehow stole this money, or paid me with a stolen card, who would be responsible for the money? Google is no help, because all the questions similar to this are answered in terms of being a small business or merchant.

I would guess that if law enforcement came looking for the money somehow, they'd get it from him, and if he didn't have the money to pay it, they'd take collateral. I can't conjure a scenario where I'd be responsible for refunding money that he stole. Am I wrong here?

I know this is completely hypothetical, and I have no actual reason to believe the funds were obtained illegally. I just have really bad anxiety, and worry a lot.
