    Question about home insurance

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 12:32 AM PST

On 4th of July my sister was lightning up fireworks and one of the fireworks tipped when it was shot and the 2nd shot hit our neighbors front yard. The front yard caught fire but the house was fine and no one was hurt. We called 911 and the fire was turned off. The neighbor was watching the fireworks with us and he knows it was an accident. He was cool with it since he had insurance. Now 5 month later I got a knock on my door from state farm insurance saying that they are finally fixing his front yard and that we are responsible to pay for the damages since we do not have renter's insurance. I am confused because our neighbor pays insurance in case things like this happen. Isn't the insurance suppose to cover it? Isn't that the whole point of insurance? Please let me know what I should do in this situation. Thank you

Is filing a DV claim worth it?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:03 PM PST

Hey all. I found out about diminished value recently and was wondering if it'd be worth pursuing in this situation.

I live in Florida. I bought a new 2019 Ac cord Sport on May 30th of this year.

I was t-boned a month after. Other driver was at fault. My back started hurting the day after so I hired a personal injury attorney and am still going through that process. Repairs were about $4,000.

Then in late November I was rear ended. Again, other driver at complete fault. Just got a check from their insurance for the estimate which is about $1,200. I'm sure my body shop is gonna need a bit more like last time.

I've seen people claiming success with DV claims but their repair costs seem higher. The process of filing and providing evidence seems like a headache so I'm wondering if it would be even worth it before I start getting into this?

A Question Regarding Gap in Coverage

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:18 PM PST

Hello insurance enthusiasts. I come to you in a time of great confusion, and was hoping some of you could shed some light on my dilemma, since I myself am very new to strange and interesting world of health insurance.

Here's the situation: I(m22) was recently taken off of my father's health insurance. My sister turned 26, and since that's a condition that allows him to change his insurance, he took the opportunity to get rid of his "family plan" which included my mother and I as well (they are divorced but he was ordered to keep her on his insurance, but she's on disability so she takes no issue with it). This saves my father about $450 a month, and he offered to reimburse me for whatever insurance I get on, as his way of taking care of me which I appreciate. Problem is, I applied for my states subsidized marketplace (MNsure) with aid since I live with my mother and am poor college student, and I'm still waiting to hear back. I believe my father already took me off his insurance, however, and before the time I expect to have access to my own insurance, I have a therapy appointment which I would like to make. According to my friend, whatever insurance that I get on through MNsure should retroactively cover anything that it would have covered during this gap period, but I don't want to take his word on that, and it seems to be too specific of a question for Google to handle. I would greatly appreciate any available advice on this topic.

Sorry for the formatting! Edit: Grammar

Paying out of pocket for fender bender

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:44 PM PST

I filed a claim with State Farm (CA) for a minor fender bender. Can I pay out of pocket for the damages of my vehicle and have insurance pay for the other vehicle? What are the repercussions of doing this? I'm doing this to avoid an increase premium/rate. If I don't pay out of pocket then the claim will result in chargeable fees as it will be outside the insurance threshold of $1000.

Background if interested: person merged into my front bumper. Driver lied and told insurance that I rear ended them in their lane. State Farm (my insurance) is taking 100% liability. Thank you in advance!

Do programs such as “Drive Safe & Save” programs lower insurance for high-risk drivers as well; programs which track how one drives, brakes, speeds, etc.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 05:04 AM PST

I'm 24 and live in NYC. My license is valid (not currently driving though because of mass transit).

I drove like an idiot in 2016/2017 and racked up a lot of tickets. Haven't received any since 2017 and all hearings have been completed.

I fixed my habits in 2018/2019, but all of my court dates and violation convictions occurred in 2019 for the most part.

My license currently has about 18-20 points on it when factoring in the PIRP (Defensive Driving) program (0 points by 1/1/2023).

Would a program such as State Farm's "Drive Safe & Save" or Allstate's "Drivewise" end up reducing my already high premiums?

Would I even be allowed to utilize these programs since I'm an "at-risk driver"? And if so, how much do they typically reduce by assuming I am a perfect driver.

I currently have renters insurance with State Farm, so I would prefer them if they would take me.

I appreciate all advice and suggestions.

TL;DR: Do tracking programs such as "Drivewise", "Snapshot", and "Drive Safe & Save" work with high-risk drivers?

EDIT: Thank you all for your help and guidance regarding this! You all are VERY helpful and I will implement it as soon as I can!

My insurance plan REQUIRES a primary care doctor?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:58 PM PST

I just bought a plan through marketplace, until my work insurance goes into effect in April. The plan begins tomorrow, and I was reading some documents. I have already scheduled an appointment for my OBGYN because I am pregnant and NEED prenatal care. The plan information is saying that I need to have a primary care doctor refer me to an obgyn and if I don't, my visit will not be covered. Why is this? Why am I paying $500 a month for insurance that I can't even use? I cannot miss my appointment and refuse to go to another obgyn, as mine is close and I've been seeing him for 10 years. Is this correct or am I misunderstanding the information?

Car: How long does it take to determine fault if no party takes the blame?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:29 PM PST

So I got in an accident in October. I was driving along and saw a car coming from the right at the intersection all of a sudden and didn't have time to stop. I was 100% sure I had a green light at the time but he was 100% sure I went through a red and there was a driver behind me who also said I went through the red. So I was tempted to think I had been distracted and didn't realize I ran a light. I might have been looking at my phone, it's hard to remember. The other's driver's car ended up getting a lot more damage than me. I went straight into her door and front tire and her door and front tire had a nice bend in it and had to be towed away. My grill was scuffed a little and some paint on the hood was chipped but it's perfectly drivable.

That being said, I'm a good driver and never been in an accident before so when I talked to my insurance, I said I was 98% sure I had a green light but acknowledged that I knew the other driver was certain she had a green light.

So it's been two months and no decision has been made. They gave me an estimate based on photos I sent and my insurance agent keeps calling me asking me about my body shop information.

I will get it fixed eventually I think, but my car is perfectly drivable and looks fine unless you get up close. I'd prefer not to pay the deductible.

How long does it take to determine fault if no party takes the blame?

Is this always how it works?

[CA] Canceling Covered California after enrolling in employer insurance?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:36 PM PST

My husband was unemployed and insured through Covered CA January through June of 2019. July 2019 he started a good paying job that offers health insurance and enrolled. However, I think we fucked up and forgot to cancel Covered CA. Despite literally never using it, are we going to have to repay his premiums come April 2020?

    Thank in advance

    Virtual interview

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:29 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I recently applied to a claims adjuster trainee position at progressive. It was my second time applying. A few months ago I got as far as having an over the phone interview. This time though, I received an email to complete a virtual interview on HireVue. Have any of you had experience with this as you went through the process?

    Thanks and happy new year!

Auto Insurance + Going Abroad for 2-3 years w/ no car

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 10:38 AM PST

Currently I live/work in the U.S. but will be shortly moving to Europe for work for about 2-3 years. While I am in Europe I will be using public transportation and will not have a car.

I've read that if I let my car insurance lapse, upon my return to the U.S. I will see very high premiums. Will a non-owners policy be viewed as being continually insured? Am I allowed to have a policy even though I am not residing in the U.S.? I am planning to come back to the U.S - 2-3x a year for short stints (week at a time).

I am a Georgia resident, currently renting, no access to USAA.

    Am I eligable for COBRA?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:47 AM PST

I am keeping my job but switching my health insurance to my husband's plan. My current plan ends at midnight tonight. My new plan doesn't start till Jan 6th. Everything I've read about qualifying for COBRA has to do with loss of employment or death or divorce but nothing about my situation. I need to know tonight wheather to pay $200 for a month of "short term" insurance, OR if I can just relax and retroactively envoke COBRA if I have an emergency in the next 5 days. EVERYONE who has anything to do with HR (the people who answer COBRA questions) does not come into work between Dec20th-Jan2nd. I'm on my own. Please help.

    please help my uncle!!

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:41 AM PST

My uncle is currently on Coumadin, a blood thinner, which is essentially rat poison. It's caused him to bleed internally multiple times and his and my aunt's insurance is so shitty (f*** you Kaiser Permanente LA) that it won't cover anything safer. He's 62, so in 3 years he'll qualify for Medicare, but I'm not sure if he'll even live that long with the way his health insurance just doesn't seem to care*. Is there any way he can get coverage for something like Xarelto that's safer to take?

    * Recently, he went to Urgent Care because he knew he was bleeding internally (because of the Coumadin). He had to sit there for a few hours before they took him back to basically tell him he was bleeding internally and had to wait even longer to get treated even though the UC was practically empty. He lost a lot of blood. I've thought about writing Kaiser Permanente out of anger, but I know nothing would change.

    Can anyone please help?

Paperless bills in New York State

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:42 AM PST

State Farm won't let me opt out of receiving paper statements. I get them and shred them every time. (I save the PDFs.)

I asked my agent, and he claimed this was some sort of legal requirement. Is this at all true? If so, can you point me to the relevant portion of the law? I'm pretty sure this wasn't a requirement when I lived in California, and all of my non-insurance bills here are e-bills.

Is personal insurance cheaper if you're already on someone else's policy?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:16 AM PST

I've been on my partners car insurance for close to 2 years now, driving their vehicle as i'd sold mine so we could downsize. I'm now looking to get my own car again as well as my own insurance.

My Question: Would I be quoted lower car insurance rates since I technically already have insurance with a low rate?
