Looking to expand my one man business, don't know where to start Posted: 25 Jan 2020 02:33 AM PST Hello Reddit, I'm looking for some advice on growing my business. For about 4 years I've run a carpet cleaning business, which now makes around $90,000 per year. It is just me, with my van and my equipment. However, I don't even know how to go about expanding my business. My main thought was to buy another van and hire someone else, but I have concerns: 1) how do I pay them? Hourly or percentage cut of the job? 2) how would I prevent them from taking advantage of my business, for example doing more jobs on the side using my equipment and not telling me about them? 3) what if they're shit and run my business reputation into the ground? Any thoughts or hearing about your experiences would be most appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 11:32 PM PST In some situations, your team members (or some of them) may have some potential prospects or influencers in their social networks. Or on the minimum side, you get a better SEO with potential traffic driven to your website. In this context, do you go for getting the social media posts shared by employees/teams on their timelines? Has anyone been doing this? [link] [comments] |
Warehouse class of use change UK Posted: 25 Jan 2020 01:17 AM PST Hey, I'm currently trying to find an industrial unit for indoor paint-balling with a twist. I think I've found the perfect unit but the company leasing it have said it is classed as business use only currently and would need to be changed to D2 leisure instead. They weren't very helpful in explaining how to get it changed and from what I can see online it wouldn't be very likely planning permission would accept it. Would anyone be able to explain what I need to do and if they have any tips on what would make it more likely to be passed? I've been told it takes around 8 - 12 weeks for a decision to be made and the most common reason for them to turn it down in the UK would be because the unit could currently be used as a factory and offer a big job opportunity to the residents near by, where as my business idea would only offer around 10 jobs by it's second year once things kick off. Starting a business from little to no funds? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:50 AM PST After seeing a video on adventure playgrounds, and working at a very rule-heavy, intensely monitored, "safe indoor play structure," I want to start an adventure playground in my city. Adventure playgrounds are playgrounds where children are in charge. They're given land, tools, and freedom. They can dig, saw, hammer, and build their own structures. They're playgrounds designed to let children be children, learn valuable life skills, and make their own decisions on things. After seeing the benefits of adventure playgrounds and currently working and a place I'd define as the exact opposite of one, I've become passionate about this. I never thought I could actually make it a reality because I'm making just enough money along with my bf to afford rent, food, and expenses here and there for things like my cats and my car. But my bf told me I don't need money to get started. I just first need to build my plan, then find an architect to work with (from the local University), and then find an investor. I know next to nothing about business, this was a spur of the moment passion idea I came up with a couple weeks ago so I have no idea how any of this works. Is it true about what my bf said? And what are the steps I need to take to make this dream a reality? [link] [comments] |
Cyber Security: Hire a professional or do it yourself? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 01:34 PM PST Hi, I'm doing some research for a product and I was wondering if your business hires an expert security provider or if you try to do it yourself? Buying from alibaba and shipping to Canada Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:54 PM PST Thought I will ask this here, I was looking for something specific and found it on aliexpress and ebay for around US $150 a piece. Same thing on alibaba was way cheaper, I talked with a seller and he qouted US $150 for 5 pieces. Thats exactly what I want!. Now I asked the seller for shipping and he is asking US $40 for shipping to Canada. Isn't that a bit high? The size will be same as a laptop and about 1kg in weight. This kind of shipping is usually free on aliexpress. Is this normal? Anything else I should know for first time alibaba buyer? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 03:59 PM PST From 2016-2019, I ran a side business using my photos. At the college I graduated in Dec., 2019, I sold greeting cards, calendars, and wall prints. I'm looking to expand to photo murals. The photo gets printed on wallpaper and pasted on a client's wall. This business may remain a side venture. For my greeting cards and calendars, I'd like to integrate with a low cost yet well performing warehouse and logistics provider. I use Squarespace for the website and domain. I know Shipstation mentions some 3PL providers it has connections to. I'd like to have goods ship through FedEx. For prints, I selected a print on demand provider. For photo murals, I'd like to work on a direct to client basis. What's a good quoting software that's not too expensive? I'm interested in selling on Etsy, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. It's why I'm considering BigCommerce to save time and set up my online store (standalone and outside marketplace). I need an accounting software to organize my records. I want a professional grade logo. The three online banks I'm looking at include Axos, Novo, and Azlo. I'd like to set up the business to where friends and associates can pitch in money and I pay dividends in return. I want to avoid anything involving installments. I ideally want custom packing material that can accommodate multiple cards in a carton (10 or 25 depending on decision). I'm thinking about offering a mix and match option. My website is in the link below. It's still needs some touches like photo descriptions. What advice do you have considering the questions I have? What about advice in general? Thanks. Posted: 24 Jan 2020 07:12 PM PST Here is my job post.
I think the phrase "clothing reseller" is turning people off. Some people think it is immoral to resell things from thrift stores (I learned this through Tinder). Though, biggest response (again from Tinder) I get is shock that this is actually a thing, and they ask if I make real money from it. So, based on this, I can see how "clothing reseller" is really throwing a lot of people off. That, or it just might be the fact that I am one guy and not a large business with a logo and a website to submit an application. I am concerned about this line too,
What could I do to transform this into something less shady. One of the big scams on FB jobs is trying to get people to buy stuff. So I can see how this could be throwing people off too. In the initial training weeks, they won't actually buy anything, instead they will be adding items to my cart at the thrift store since I will be with them, I pay them for each piece, and then I am the only one paying at the cash register for the goods. Card Machine, Without Merchant Bank. Posted: 24 Jan 2020 12:28 PM PST I live in the UK and I am currently helping out a family member with their business. English isn't their first language, so I'm doing this for them. They currently go through a merchant bank, to process their card payments. They find this really annoying though and it messes with their cash flow. Is there any way to install a card machine, that will send the money directly to their business account? What are the pros and cons? [link] [comments] |
Web hosting for custom website Posted: 24 Jan 2020 12:21 PM PST Hello, A business I purchased came with a custom website (former bus owner was a developer) and I'm trying to move the site from his server to our own server. Does anyone have recommendations for hosting, we have already been warned against all EIG companies (Bluehost, Hostgator, etc) and are looking at Dreamhost at this point. Old server was AWS. Also, it's a relatively small site, is there any reason to stick with VPS, or is a shared server adequate? Second part of my question, our custom site is OK, not bad but not amazing, and I've been hearing that we should just abandon the old site and build a new Wordpress site, because it's better for novices like myself and better for digital marketing in the future. Custom website would need a developer for any changes, but we don't make huge changes to the site that often. [link] [comments] |
College Student with Small Business Interested in Business Credit Posted: 24 Jan 2020 05:56 PM PST Hello, all! I am currently a college student but also the owner of a small video production company. I am looking to upgrade my gear soon as my clients are getting more and more demanding, but I simply do not have the income currently to purchase any significant upgrades. I am looking to start looking for business credit but I am conflicted. I do not want to get denied and have another hard inquiry on my account as I have 4 already within the last year. My credit is only 658 (Experian), 684 (Equifax), and 677 (TransUnion). Is there anything I could do about this? I have a business EIN, but I have no business credit history as my business is only 6 months old, so I am sure the card company would run my personal credit and deny me. Great beginner business card suggestions that typically have high limits would be awesome, but I feel improbable. Thank you all very much in advance! I really appreciate any advice you have :) [link] [comments] |
Does performance follow a bell curve or an L curve? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 09:02 AM PST Can across this article talking about how performance is distributed in an organization. It suggests that it follows an L curve instead of a normal distribution, and that performance reviews and compensation should follow this assumption. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Password Management Service for a team of 7 Posted: 24 Jan 2020 10:14 AM PST Would anyone happen to have recommendations for a good password management/secure sharing service for a small team? lastpass for business and teampassword have been considered among us but I wanted to see if there are possibly any better options? Because we're such a small team we tend to share passwords - especially for marketing and design related services with hefty price tags for additional licenses. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
How to go about selling my service to a business? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 05:15 PM PST I work for an automotive inventory photography company. Basically I take the pictures of the cars and post them to the dealerships website. I want to go free lance and sell my services to other dealerships hopefully building my own independent business. How do I get my services out there? Do I walk in local dealerships and ask to speak to a manager and pitch my service? Phone call? Email? Business cards? I can't find manager emails on dealer websites? If I do email, do I name my price over the email or only in person? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 11:08 AM PST Has anyone tried the Clover POS/Debit machine? I had a rep come to my business and we sat and went over the details. It looks great and the fees are half of what I'm paying with my current terminal (fees for debit transactions and the percentages for credit cards). I'm a small business that offers custom cakes/cupcakes and cupcakes for sale daily. So being a small business saving money is everything. But of course that saying "if it's too good to be true, it is" keeps popping into my head. I've seen reviews from the US and it's not great. Anyone use it reside in Canada? Thoughts? The sales person has been a bit pushy for me to say yes, which is starting to turn me off of the company. I wanted to look into it and have my husband look into the reviews as well. Father in law in a green grocer - How can he improve? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 07:01 AM PST My partners dad owns his own fruit and veg shop. He's in a popular part of town and business is good. It could definitely be better, but I'm not sure how. He currently does a couple of deliveries a week for people, but most business is people coming to his shop. Does anyone know of any ways to increase income at this kind of business? Maybe there's some creative things he could be doing to get some extra cash. [link] [comments] |
mobile dog training business: need advice on business phone line Posted: 24 Jan 2020 12:47 PM PST Hi! So glad I found this subreddit! I am a certified dog trainer, and I go to customers houses to train them and their pups. I also have a very small boarding business for my clients dogs in my home. I run the business myself and I don't have any employees. Currently I am using my personal phone number for all business calls. I read online that this is not a good idea so I have been looking for separate lines that might be able to link to my phone, like a Google number. But I would like to be able to set up a voicemail and be able to text from that number as well, since many of my customers prefer that method of communication. I dont want to get another phone but I am willing if I have to. Do you lovely people have any recommendations on what I should do? There are lots of options and I am overwhelmed by all of them :) Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 04:13 PM PST I am getting involved in my family business, it needs TLC and I'm looking for advice. It's a 24 unit motel. The building is old but the rooms have been constantly renovated. Actions taken: I stated by making a website and getting on travel sites such as booking. Trying to make an online presence. Next I plan on creating an email list and campaigns to promote specials and fill more rooms. Questions: Having just created an online presence, how do I promote our listing/ website to gain more traction and build them up? We are unable to dedicate a large budget to this until it shows results. Is there anything else I should be doing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 03:40 PM PST So I am currently thinking of starting a small business in Dublin, Ireland. I am an experienced Telecommunications Operator with years of experience expanding different ISP's customer base and also streamlining broadband support department processes. I am thinking of offering my expertise on a consultancy basis part-time to small businesses. My question is does anyone currently offer consulting services in Ireland and what tips would you have for someone starting out? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2020 03:21 PM PST In this situation, I would be putting down all the money and therefore assuming all the risk. She has experience in the field, and would run it day to day, seeing clients, booking things in, running the social media etc. I would find the venue, organise renting it out, ordering everything for it, etc, but after that I'd have minimal input in the business - maybe just helping out with accounting, etc. In this situation, what would be a fair amount of profit for me to have vs her? Is 50/50 fair? I know it depends on the individual partnership but I've never done anything like this before, so looking for general ideas and opinions. Thanks so much! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Jan 2020 10:46 AM PST Anyone here own a successful tea shop or tea house? I'm interested in what demographics you primarily serve to identify whether the absence of tea shops in my urban thicket (excluding two kung fu tea's) is because there is a lack of a market, or if a good opportunity exists here. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
