Auto Insurance, Car Totaled, Premium went down??

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 02:57 PM PST

So my girlfriend totaled her car ( texting while driving ) and the insurance company totaled the car. It was just the radiator clips that really broke but they still totaled it so after fixing it, we bought it back and cleared the title. And we just got an email saying her insurance premium has changed but to our surprise it went from 1.6k to 1.1k... what the hell?

    Umbrella Insurance?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:55 PM PST

Having hard time finding reasonable umbrella insurance quotes - most of the companies I talked to need that I move my auto insurance to them. Are there any exceptions at all?

Any idea on what would be premium for 1m cover?

I have pretty decent coverage and rate from current insurance provider and would love not to move to other provider (unless it is absolute must)

    Acts of God/Nature

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 04:51 AM PST

    Hi insurance experts,

My car was flooded last October 1, 2019. The user/driver did not report it right away and did not file for a police report or affidavit. Upon returning the unit to me last December 2019 and bringing it to the car dealer to be checked. That's when we found out that it was already flooded. Can I still claim?

    Thanks!

Only part of floor damaged but adjuster ask to cover all

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:50 PM PST

Part of my floor was damaged due to ac unit leak. I was unaware that the adjuster asked to get the entire 1st floor replace. The insurance approved it but its honestly only like 10% of the floor. Do I really have to RIP up my entire floor to just replace a section? Even if the flooring is still available to purchase? Its laminate wood flooring.

How does an independent insurance adjuster get contracted to write up estimates?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:38 PM PST

I'm in the process of getting my licenses.

My buddy has a friend who does this work. He said he gets paid between $300-$500 depending on the claim type and size. To write up estimates on xactimate.

    Company health insurance

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:08 PM PST

Got a letter to apply for health insurance from my company. Open enrollment 16th-31st. I make my selections and I get a conformation email with my selections saying coverage begins the 29th today I get a letter saying my insurance ended the 31st and since I didn't make new selections it defaulted to a different plan that I can't afford. Now that open enrollment is closed can it be fixed? What recourse do I have if they won't fix it?

"If additional loss-related damage is discovered, your shop can work directly with us"

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:33 AM PST

I'm in my 50s and have had my home and auto covered by the same State Farm agent for almost 30 years. I know the best practice nowadays is to review providers annually to look for a better plan, but I've been set in my ways because SF had always provided excellent service before.

It seems like not so much so this time. My car was involved in a accident in a parking lot a month ago. There were no witnesses or video of the incident, so it is unlikely I will be able to claim the other driver as liable. Without going into details, my branch agent and the call center agents have been unresponsive and somewhat difficult to deal with, but I finally got an appointment this week to have the car inspected at a SF-affiliated body shop. I already had an independent body shop inspect it a month ago right after the accident, and they assessed the repair cost around $,5000, due mostly to damage to the headlamp housing and the distance sensor.

The person who did the inspection today spent just several minutes looking at the exterior damage and cut me a check for $1,500. (My deductible is $1,000.) I explained about the previous inspection finding more damage internally for significantly more cost. He said they only do an external inspection and that the body shop I take the car to would have contact them for the additional payment. I also got an automated email from SF stating the following:

If additional loss-related damage is discovered, your shop can work directly with us to submit another estimate. Contact your shop with questions about repair status.

Before contacting the body shop, I just wanted to ask here, is this all pretty standard nowadays? Will the body shop likely try to work directly with SF? Or just do so half-heartedly and then expect me to pay the difference anyway?

Or if I go to the SF-affiliated body shop and they find & repair the additional damage, will SF then compensate me for the additional cost? Or will they likely figure out an excuse not to cover it?

Much of the responsibility for this situation is on me. I'd always had good service from SF before and had been complacent and wasn't expecting to be dealing with all this. I just feel like I'm in the dark here and am looking to see where this is likely going to go and what I should do.

    Bf's ex-wife involved in claim

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:13 PM PST

My bf borrowed my car, got hit by an old lady who claimed it was his fault and she filed a claim. As it's my car it's under my insurance and they called me and my bf earlier today to get our side of the story. I was not with him at the time of the accident.

Just now, I found out that my insurance company called his ex wife. I have never met this lady and as far as I know my bf rarely speaks to her. What I want to know is, how on earth did they get her info and why the hell would they call her? She lives in a different state.

Is it possible my bf is still married and not telling me? I can't think of any other reason they would have her info and call her. Please help.

Insurance Period Ending Different in Timezones

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:47 PM PST

While on a university exchange in California, I had my $2000 laptop stolen and I'm trying to make an insurance claim for it. I live in New Zealand and bought travel insurance from an NZ company. The problem is that my insurance ended on the 22nd of December. The theft happened on the 22nd in California time but on the 23rd on NZ time. I definitely should have made sure the insurance covered the entire trip, but I'm gonna try and make the claim anyway. I've got a police report. How can I try and get paid out or do I have no chance?

    Copay Assistance Programs

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:36 PM PST

Today I refilled my prescription for Humira and since it's a new year, I was told I would have to pay a couple thousand for the copay this month. However, Humira offers an assistance program, that, once applied, reduced that copay to $5. It looks like I still met my primary insurance's deductible though (unless I'm misunderstanding something on their website).

How does this type of program actually work? How does this not break some kind of rules - shouldn't only my $5 go towards my deductible? Why would they even offer a program like this?

If it works out that the copay before the discount applies towards my deductible, then sweet, free healthcare for 2020! But I just want to understand how that can happen. It seems kinda like how some windshield replacement companies will give you a gift card for using them over competitors.

Does car insurance cover across state lines?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:31 PM PST

I will be graduating college in June. A few months afterward I'm going to be moving to a different state and I'll need a new car and my own insurance. If I buy insurance in the state I'm currently living can I keep this insurance indefinitely, or are insurers restricted to state lines?

    Toilet Overflow

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:22 PM PST

Girlfriend flushed toilet, it clogged and the lever stayed down flooding the room briefly while she showered. The light below that room had a small amount of water. Also, the floor just outside the bathroom has begun creeking.

Should I bring this to insurance or should it be ok?

I've since changed the light and the drywall near the light didn't seem damp. The floor creeking is now making me anxious. This house was built this year and I found an issue with the lever on the toilet.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Health insurance claim appeal GA

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 03:58 PM PST

I hope this is not too long, there is a lot of runaround I have dealt with along the way.

Last year I was in a situation in which I went to an out of network provider after having consulted with my insurance administrator that all in network providers were closed. The plan administrator rep was fully informed this facility was out of network and they said that given the circumstances they would put a note on file that when I submit the claim I would be charged as if it were in network.

I submitted my claim and did not hear back for a month so I called to follow up. The plan administrator said it was denied but when I explained what had happened and asked to verify if there was a note on file and there was. They were apologetic and said it is clearly an error and they would make note of the note, resubmit it and I should be reimbursed quickly.

I received a rejection letter almost two months from the date of service and I followed up once again. At this point I had been told by multiple representatives that it was a clerical error and should be an easy fix. Not so, as I was now told that in fact I would not be charged in network rates for the exact circumstances I would be told I would be. I asked if there had been a policy change or miscommunication and the they said no. I asked if they could provide me where in my summary plan description would explain why. The representative said yes, no problem and that they would call me back with that Information.

A week later after no contact I follow up again asking for the criteria in the SPD. Their tone has now changed and through many transfers and managers they flat out refuse to tell me the reference text in the SPD for the basis of their decision, which is contrary to what I had been told for months. I again asked if there was a policy change or miscommunication and still a refusal. They would not budge. The claims department has made their decision and I cannot go up the ladder anymore.

My ultimate question is: is the insurance plan administrator allowed to reject a claim based upon criteria that is not listed in the SPD? Can they refuse to cite or provide me, the customer, this information?

It feels wrong to me that they can make this determination and change their minds without this information. In a world of regulations, this seems like a parent saying to a child 'because I said so'

    Thanks for the help!

TLDR: insurance company rejects a claim that they said would be accepted and refused to provide the basis upon the rejection in the plan description.

How is the the total loss calculated by the insurance - ALLSTATE?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:09 PM PST

The repair needs to be at the certain value ratio correct?

    How is that calculation determined?

Is the car value based on the "current" price or original MSRP? vs the repair cost.

What is the repair % that determines total loss?

Co-signed a car with my boyfriend and got into a car crash — no insurance, need HELP

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:05 PM PST

In November 2019 my boyfriend's Honda CRV broke down and was in desperate need of a new car to get to work. We did our research and found a 2012 Acura TL at a third party dealership. That same day we both signed off on the car as him being the primary owner and me being the co-signer. Weeks later when the registration came in someone at the dealership office somehow messed up and put my name on the registration and his license number as a co-driver.

About 2 days ago my boyfriend got into a car accident with the Acura TL (long story short: he was driving straight at a green light in an intersection and some lady thought she could beat him in time with a left turn) and now we can't get the car from the pound unless we show them proof of insurance .. which we don't have.

Now I am trying to go internet shopping for insurance quotes. I found a decent one from Progressive using my information but before proceeding there is a small plot twist...

My boyfriend and I don't live together. I'm still under my father's car insurance policy with the vehicle that I actually drive. Will getting the car insurance for my boyfriend's vehicle affect the policy I am under with my father at all? Will he get some kind of notice or change in rate?

Where can I find theft insurance for electronics?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 01:01 PM PST

I don't own a home, I rent a room in a house. I am not worried about my items being stolen in a break in, I worry about them being stolen while at work or at the gym. Its my headphones and laptop which I carry with me. I can't seem to find any place to insure just those items for theft. Most extended warranty companies don't offer theft insurance. Anyone know where I can get this specific insurance?

Other person's insurance denying claim, even though other person ran into our lane and side swiped our car. Texas

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:31 AM PST

Some lady tried to get into the lane we were in, smashed the drivers side front wheel fender, headlight and part of the bumper. Police were called and officer said he would submitt report. Officer agreed other person was at fault for merging into an occupied lane. That same officer never submitted an actual report, but simply made notes on incident. We don't have anything from that, now the other lady's insurance in saying they have a different story from their client and have denied our claim.

I haven't contacted my insurance company because I'm worried they will simply raise my rates, even though I'm not filing through them and was not at fault. (Heard many stories of folk's rate going up just. Because they called in with question)

What is my best route to take. Should I just call company and have them contend the other company?

    Thanks for any feedback

I unknowingly went to an Out Of Network ER and had surgery. Now what?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:16 PM PST

Monday morning I went to the closest ER with some severe pain, turns out I had a large abscess. I went into surgery later that day and stayed overnight.

During my discharge, the doctor told me I was out of network.

Now what do I do to keep my costs as low as possible? I realize I should have checked prior, but now I want to be smart. What tips do you have?

    TIA Reddit!

EDIT: insurance is from the university my wife works at with a very reputable hospital that I should have gone to.

Insurance Denied our Claim to Fix Shower/Plumbing Issue that's Causing Damage to Neighbor Downstairs

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:32 AM PST

We live in a 2-story condo unit, upper unit. We purchased the unit 1.5 years ago and with nothing noted in the inspection that there was something wrong with the shower. Our downstairs neighbor complained about water damage to their ceiling originated from our shower unit. We contacted our HOA and they had an engineer to come out and examine the issue. They wrote a small report which claimed it was our shower leakage that caused the damage.

We got a quote for $4500 from a contractor to fix the shower and $700 to fix the downstairs ceiling. We had to file 2 claims, $700 liability downstairs and $4500 to our unit. Our insurance came back and denied our $4500 claim to the shower which was the cause of the leakage. They say there was no damage done to the unit and thus they have to deny it.

The previous owner was a flipper which didn't use the unit for years but the unit was in remodeled condition when purchased.

Is there anything I could do to get a portion covered? What's the whole point of paying insurance if it doesn't cover non negligence items like this?
