At this point I don’t even want my CPA I want a career change

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 11:08 AM PST

About 4 months in studying for the CPA and working at a big 4 I'm realizing I chose the wrong path. I hate accounting. I don't care how things are classified.

Picked accounting because a stable job & thought I was too stupid to pursue something interesting to me. I should've worked harder & shouldn't have told myself I was too dumb to go into the sciences or math. (IDK why tf I thought an accountant would be easier LMFAO)

Thinking about taking classes online to switch careers, working at the firm until I can make the switch.

Anyone else feel like this? Is this just the stress & lack of sleep & caffeine addiction talking? Or did I really waste 3 years of my life in college for a career I can't stand

How do I make the jump from IT Audit into literally anything else?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:49 PM PST

    Hi All,

Currently an A2 in IT Audit. Looking to make a jump and have been applying like mad on LinkedIn, Indeed, and directly on company websites. The jobs that I would've gotten interviews on as a new grad are not responding to me at all.

I'm deeply worried that I'm stuck in this IT Audit hellhole forever. Am I doing something wrong? I'm desperate to the point where I've started contacting recruiters. I'm 99.999999% that my resume is not an issue and it's pretty much the same resume I used to get into Big 4 and has been looked over by many people.

    Please help.

    Please.

How do you set boundaries with clients?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:24 PM PST

I think I got myself in a jam. I'm about 2 years into my own practice and I always approached every client interaction with a "how can I help and bring value" and now it's turning into me being steamrolled by clients. I'm finding myself doing things that I'm not even 100% qualified to do, want to do or even have time to do. Also because I made a stupid mistake of not adding any clauses to our agreements that would cover extra work - I'm not even getting paid for that work in some instances.

I understand I'm doing a huge disservice to myself , my company and my team.

Aside from firing clients (which is definitely on the table at this point) - how did you guys overcome "scope creep" and make sure it doesn't happen in the future.

    Interesting Accounting Journal PDFs/Texts

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 02:32 PM PST

I'm looking to build a small library of PDFs that I'd like to read about accounting and finance...graduate level theory, industry practices or on governance.

If anyone is as big of an accounting nerd as I am I would really appreciate some titles.

    Post away!

    Is accounting the right fit?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:51 PM PST

Currently I am an intern at a logistics company and I report directly to the CFO as well as the CEO. I am almost finished with my economics degree and plan on getting my masters in accounting or taking classes else where to get my hours of accounting in to get my CPA.

I've never been the best student but when it comes to work I find myself going over the top to make sure things are perfect and done correctly. As I search for my passion still I always thought accounting would be a stable job as I could see myself climbing and being able to retire early. - (who knows if that's what will actually happen, seeing family members ahead of me do this gave me motivation to get in this field)

I often ask myself if this is the correct career path for me, since I'm still trying to figure this out I guess I really want to know if being an accountant is really stimulating enough for one to truly enjoy the work load it brings?

I love working out, festivals, and being on my own schedule. I know that doesn't sound realistic but I've always been intrigued by the life of an individual in sales.

Sales scares me as I'm a great people person but I often find myself getting anxious in conversations. I've felt like accounting has been great as it gives me my space and time to be able to throw my headphones in and get shit done.

The thought of being in my office for the great portion of my life makes me feel like I will hit a wall at some point and say F this and potentially throw away everything I worked for.

I guess what I'm looking for is tips on how anyone in this thread knew they really enjoyed accounting or knew that this would be a good fit for themselves?

I'm trying to be pretty optimistic. I've heard by many individuals that working for a big 4 corporation is not ideal, as they just work you to the ground, is this true?

Working for a smaller company like I currently am doing could be beneficial. If I stick with the job I currently have I could potentially see myself taking over for the CFO as he will retire within the next 6 years.

Any tips or advice helps, thank you!

Do coworkers and and superiors look down on you if you don't want to pursue the CPA?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:48 PM PST

I've been thinking about whether I should or should not pursue the CPA and I can't decide.

    Pros:

    • Higher pay
    • Job security (really beneficial in an economic crisis)
    • Officially licensed

    Cons:

    • More long, stressful hours
    • Brutal preparation and test taking for the exam
    • More responsibilities and duties

What's more important to me is the work and life balance. I need personal time, not just for slacking off and watching TV shows, but mostly to work towards my passions. However, I can't keep thinking that if a recession hits, I won't even be considered for employment since Accountants with CPA's will be prioritized.

I feel like because of this, I would like to work in Industry where a CPA is not highly desired and the work and life balance is great.

Anyways, to get back to my question, do people care if you don't want to get your CPA (excluding the Big 4)?

    Lease accruals?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:12 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I'm starting a new job tomorrow as a cost accountant. I've only had experience with revenue and GL accounting (2 years since graduation) so this is my second job. Can someone explain to me what accrued leases is? Is it just a monthly accrual of the lease expense? Or is there anything I need to be prepared for? I'm trying to get a general understanding of what cost accounting is since this role is more focused on distribution expenses regarding freight and lease accruals.

can someone please provide a JE example of an accrued lease?

Any help is very appreciated. Thanks all!

CPA Candidate - Experience Requirements in CA/WA

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 11:13 PM PST

    Hi all,

I am currently studying for the CPA in CA and came across an issue. I just found out that in order to be licensed in CA, I have to public accounting experience. I currently have 3+ years of experience in corporate with no public accounting experience. This is causing me to stress a bit since this is throwing off my plan (knowing if I want to get licensed, I will have to switch into public).

My other option is to transfer my scores (once I pass) to WA (planning to move there in X years) and get licensed there, because I believe I can use my industry experience (please correct me if I am wrong, and I do need public accounting experience).

Would love to have some insights on the pros and cons of each option if you have any.

Did I make a mistake in Accounting?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 11:12 PM PST

After contemplating, I finally decided to switch from Finance to Accounting as my major earlier in my college years and currently, I'm about to graduate college with a full time offer at a Big Four in Assurance.

Recently, I've been having doubts about my decision to work in accounting with the reddit stories of stress, busy season, and underpay. My girlfriend occasionally questions my choice in accounting as a career as she hears that "Finance makes more money" and how I'm more stressed in my accounting classes compared to my finance classes.

I know that the busy season stress is something of a nightmare but I'm hoping that earning the CPA title along with the experience at a big 4 firm will be worth it? I mean, it has to be worth it if people are willing to work 60-80 hours right? I would really appreciate if you guys could give me the real truth on what kind of opportunities and pay I would see given the track that I am on right now so I can reassure myself. In other words, will I be rich?!

Guys i need your help i'm in trouble. I'm struggling very very badly at work. I work in a tax firm.

It's a very small office. I just can't do the work. I've been there 3 months and i just can't do it.

I sit in a corner and have no one to talk to / no friends t the office. It's a very anti social office and small. Like there's no lunch room and the few people their my age keep to themselves /hardly talk (i've tried talking to them).

Anyway so i sit in the corner an do really boring/mundane work. I lose interest and start playing on my phone then i get depressed (becuase i used to have a better job at better tax firm/bigger tax firm) and i just spiral out of control. I put no effort into my work and i'm scared im going to get fired. What the hell can i do?

    I just have 0 motivation , 0 friends/social life at work + doing work i don't give a crap about. I'm cooked.

    Incoming! RSM

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 10:33 PM PST

I received an offer to intern with RSM this summer a while back. I definitely didn't think I would cut it with a public accounting firm, but here we are.

Is there anything anyone wants to share about RSM? Or the accounting market in general in Northern VA? I want to hit the ground running when I get in the office. I'm interested in tax practice.

AVOIDING AWKWARD PARENT CONVOS HELP APPRECIATED

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 10:26 PM PST

hey I have an advice question. say your parents insist on doing your taxes but you have recently began a lucrative online camming career. they use tax softwares. lets say I don't give them whatever the form is that the site I use sends their independent contractors (me) and they do my taxes without including the couple k I made last year. will anything happen on their end to show that I have undisclosed income? or would I be in the clear and I can just submit an amendment thing myself? also this year earnings will be much more - can I get away with doing the same? I WILL pay my taxes - just wondering how to avoid my parents handling these specific earnings.

Is it hard to find a job if you didn’t start in Public?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 10:06 PM PST

Accounting student here. Like many, the horror stories about Public scares the shit out of me. I understand the exposure in Public will immensely benefit my career but will it be hard to find a job in Private sector if I don't have the experience in Public? How much skills from Public is actually useful when you decide to go private?

[CAD] CPA module in the summer

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:46 PM PST

Is it recommended that I do CORE 1 in the summer before I work full time with my firm in September?

They won't pay for it if I do do it in the Summer.

    Thoughts?
