Posted: 25 Jan 2020 11:47 PM PST Hi and thanks for reading. My student loan debt is currently sitting at around $168,000, with loans from different banks. I make $38,500 a year as a teacher. I am seriously struggling to pay for anything. I pay around $1,800 a month, and am just barely making my loan payments without having enough money left over for food, gas, or other living expenses. (Thank god for relatives letting me crash for free) I cannot reconsolidate at this time due to family financial hardships. Any advice to help me make these loans more manageable? Please don't go "off" on me for my debt. I am merely asking for help. Yes I know I could have made better financial decisions when I was younger. Hindsight is always 20/20 I guess. Thanks in advance... :) [link] [comments] |
How to manage multiple accounts Posted: 25 Jan 2020 05:04 PM PST I graduated last month !! I went from being a broke ass single mom waiting tables (and making between 12&16k a year) to a real live certified teacher making an actual salary. My loans are in their grace period- I have about 40k loans in all BUT it's in a million places! Some are subsidized and some are non, they all have different interest rates. There are 4 disbursements with mohela (totaling 22kish) Fedloan two disbursements totaling 12k And a variety of loans with nelnet- a total of 6700 but there are 4 loans from them in all. So do I pay three separate bills? I'm going to do income based payments I think- As a teacher I think I qualify for some programs but I'm so clueless, no one I'm related to went to college so I just put my head down and powered through Ive heard of consolidating but also heard that it's bad. I wish I could just pay one bill a month, is that possible? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2020 02:21 PM PST Hello! I have a friend who has worked for non-profits for ten years to qualify to have her federal student loans forgiven. However, it seems that she was on a non-qualifying payment plan for the program for 5 of those years. She is a really kind person and I would hate to see her lose all those years of time. Has anyone been in this same boat or have any advice for getting her previous years to count toward forgiveness? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
I can't log in to Navient, anyone else? Posted: 25 Jan 2020 08:24 AM PST Just want to verify if it's just me. I've been in repayment for years, now it says my credentials are not correct. I've tried resetting my password and searching my username but it says my account does not exist. I'm assuming it's a problem on the server side. I know that Navient is pretty hated around here, but this is my first big issue with them. [link] [comments] |
Help with income driven repayment plan form Posted: 26 Jan 2020 12:13 AM PST How to apply for income driven repayment plan? I'm clueless. I don't understand anything. I don't know what to fill in for "adjusted gross income" so for example, I made 10k (salary) for 2018, do I put down $10,000? Or would I put down $0 because my tax form doesn't have anything on it for AGI.... I'm sorry for asking....I just don't want to mess up more than I already have. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

I finally understand, but what are my best option? Posted: 25 Jan 2020 09:57 PM PST $2 more or less in interest per day, totaling up to $67 roughly per month, government pays half ($34) by the end of the month if i pay half in the beginning. I've accumulated $380 in interests so far, any amount I over pay will go towards the accumulated interests of $380 first and foremost before the principal can be addressed. I have $18,000 roughly in the principal. What are my best options? To pay off the $380 gradually or all at once? I'll still be owing $67 a month after the $380 and whatever overpaid amount will go towards the principal. What would you do? Great Lakes [link] [comments] |
Should I Pay off Low Interest Student Loans or Invest? Posted: 25 Jan 2020 01:05 PM PST Should I pay off the remainder for my student loans or make minimum payments and invest? Started with $27,500 and have paid them down to $10,000 in about 2 years. The remainder is at 3.5% interest rate. Should I use my money to max out my Roth IRA or this year or continue to pay off my debt aggressively until it's gone ? Thanks for the help!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2020 07:34 AM PST I was just approved for a PLUS loan for my son and I have a few questions. First, I was just sent a disclosure statement and it looks like they took out $1000 for the loan fee. Which seems like the school will not get all the money required for this semester. This was something I did not know. I did read I could ask for more money. Do I go to his school and ask them to ask for more money to cover the loan fee ? While I'm at it, can I ask for more money for books and travel costs ? Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Made an extra payment in July and almost none of it was applied to principle Posted: 25 Jan 2020 06:24 PM PST I made an extra $1000 payment towards my loans a few months ago and I just checked my payment history and saw that only $58 of it was applied towards the principle. The rest all went towards interest. What the hell? I pay through the Nelnet app if that helps. This was second, extra payment to try and pay off my loans faster, so I wasn't behind on any payments. Why wasn't it applied to my principle? What can I do next time so it is? [link] [comments] |
Stupid Question about Loan Forgiveness Posted: 25 Jan 2020 05:38 PM PST When the loan forgiveness program is successfully completed, does the government essentially "bail you out" and pay your student loans off to the college or does the college just "lose" the difference between paid and remaining balance? Posted: 25 Jan 2020 09:33 AM PST Hi guys, I have to pay $6500 for my tuition in 4 days.. lol.. which I don't have, I started a job about a week ago, I don't have a co-signer, I've tired asking various amount of people and no one wants to, and I'm really considering getting a credit card to pay it off, I have 2 options for student loans, FUNDING U and ASCENT Student Loans that don't require a co-signer. So in other words, is it smart obtaining a credit card and paying it off or should I miss out this semester and pay my tuition? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2020 10:30 AM PST Brief summary of my situation: I'm a returning student, set to begin Fall 2020. I last attended a local college in 2012, but had to withdraw early because I was hospitalized for mental health issues. I've been in the process of gathering all needed information and transcripts from that college and I've run into a snag. After trying to order the transcripts online, I received a notice that my account had a block on it. Long story short, I owe them $1500 before they will release my transcripts to my current university. My question is, is this is legal, or a common practice among community colleges? How should I go about this? Do I attempt to pay this debt off in time to sign up for classes (Feb. 14th deadline). Or do I have any other options? Thanks for reading, guys. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2020 09:43 AM PST Has anyone refinanced their student loans with SOFi? What did you love / hate about it? Pros and Cons you've experienced? Any tips and tricks would be great! I'm considering refinancing and looking to hear about anyone's personal experiences! Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments] |
File 2019 tax return before switching to PAYE? Posted: 25 Jan 2020 10:42 AM PST Here's our details: • Wife's loan is $154,000 (currently on PSLF plan and has about 5 years left) and she's currently on REPAYE • I don't have any loans • No kids We got married in September 2019 and haven't yet filed our 2019 taxes. It seems like we'd be better off switching to PAYE if we qualify but we're not sure if our joint income or only my wife's income is considered when applying to change to PAYE. Do we need to file our taxes for 2019 first before we apply? If so, would we need to file separately? I know our tax return will likely be better if we file jointly, but the main priority is making sure we qualify for PAYE when we apply. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2020 08:35 AM PST I am trying to google but was hoping to ask for clarification. We have an app in for my husband's student loans for borrowers forgiveness. This only covers the federal loans, right? We have a small loan left at Navient that says it's a signature loan. I was just going to pay it off (since the federal ones are in forbearance while they let the app sit there for years) if it didn't qualify for the forgiveness either way. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
