Here’s the hard-money call for why the boom in the economy and stock market will continue

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:41 AM PST

Critical information for the U.S. trading day

You might think the hard-money, recession-at-every-corner crowd would be predicting an imminent reversal in the stock market given the 20% gain for the Dow Jones Industrial Average this year.

    Not necessarily.

Thorsten Polleit, the chief economist at Swiss metals trader Degussa, explains why he thinks an economic boom will continue, with stock prices also strong.

"As long as there is still room for pushing the market interest rate down further, the chances are reasonably good that the boom continues, and that the bust will be adjourned into the future. As per the charts below, current market interest rates in the U.S. have not reached rock bottom yet. Corporate and mortgage credit costs in particular still have some way to go before hitting zero," he writes in an article for the Alabama libertarian think tank, the Mises Institute.

Significant Insider Trading Activity (Last 7 Days)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:57 PM PST

This is a list of the top 20 companies that experienced the largest change in insider shares in the last seven (7) days. The SEC defines an insider as any officer, director or 10% shareholder. It is not illegal for these people to buy or sell their own shares. In fact, since most of them get paid in stock options, it is expected. However, it is illegal for them to trade on inside information that has not been made public. So for example if there are drug trial results that are bad and not public, insiders cannot dump shares. That said, many people have observed that insiders - in general - seem to have a good track record at timing their purchases. All trades that are marked as part of a 10b5 plan are excluded from this report.

Is it possible that U.S will have a great depression again to remove all their debts?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:06 PM PST

To get this straight. I don't know much about economics, but that's why I'm here to learn.

My thought process is that U.S government keeps adding debt to itself. But they do not intend to pay it back in at least a century (a very long time). However, they do have to keep paying their dues from bonds. Within several decades, this bond will far surpass what they can pay, and the economy will enter a great depression.

I wanna know the logical fallacies in my reasoning. I want to educate myself before I start investing in the stock market.

U.S. banks' reluctance to lend cash may have caused repo shock: BIS

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 10:17 PM PST

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-markets-bis-fx/u-s-banks-reluctance-to-lend-cash-may-have-caused-repo-shock-bis-idUSKBN1YC0IQ

That rush for short-dated secured funding was exacerbated by hedge funds who had ramped up their Treasury repos to fund arbitrage trades between cash bonds and derivatives.

The BIS also noted that the spike in the repo rate spilled over into the currency derivatives market, on which banks rely increasingly for short-term funding.

In the past three years, FX swap volumes have grown to make up as much as 49% of the overall foreign exchange market due to the growing participation of lower-tier banks which depend on swaps for funding as they lack direct access to U.S. dollar markets.

"Repo markets, alongside the.. .FX swap market for U.S. dollar funding, may again find themselves in the eye of the storm should financial stress arise at some point," Borio said.

"The surge in FX short-dated swap trading. ..underlines this risk."

    Vanguard ETFs the best?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:38 PM PST

I'm building my portfolio, already have a few vanguard ETFs (VOO, VUG, VTG) and want to balance out the portfolio. Is there any reason not to stick with vanguard ETFs? Obviously in different sectors, trying to even out the tech.

Significant Activist Hedge Fund Activity (Last 7 Days)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:57 PM PST

These are the latest Schedule 13D forms filed by activist investors in the last 7 days. Activist investors are investors that make an investment with the intention of influencing management in some way. There is evidence that following activist investors into investments can generate excess returns. Schedule 13G forms, in contrast, are filed by significant investors with no intention of influencing management (such as Index funds).

There is always a lot of interest in insider trades, but what a lot of people probably don't realize is that hedge fund activity is probably more predictive of future returns than insider activity. The reason is that hedge funds (a) have large research budgets, and (b) have a choice where to put their money. In contract, insiders have no choice where to put their money, but only when to time their transactions.

Tech heavy portfolio, need to diversify

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:47 AM PST

I have some tech heavy ETFs (VOO, VUG, VGT). I also have some O and LTC stock (REIT's). I need help balancing this out because it seems very tech heavy. Don't want too much more of O or LTC. What funds should I buy that are comprised of less tech? Seems like those first EYFs are around 59% tech.

Thanks a lot for your help

Is the bull market only 6 years old, and not 10?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:05 AM PST

Most people consider the S&P500 to be "the market". With that said, everyone keeps saying that since 2009 (The GFC "bottom") we've been in a bull market for 10 years.

However, the S&P500 didn't reach it's highs from 2007 until 2013. Since a new high was made in 2013, wouldn't it make more sense to start counting the bull market from there, instead of the "bottom" of the last recession? If so, that would make this bull market 6 years old, starting around January 2013 when SPY made a new all time high.

Or is this completely wrong, and the bull market "timer" starts from the absolute bottom of the previous recession?

How is it that French luxury brands are listed in US at OTCMKTS only?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:36 AM PST

I'm looking into publicly traded shares of the French luxury brands: L'OREAL ($LRLCY), HERMES ($HESAY), LVMH Group ($LVMUY) that owns Louis Vuitton, etc. and I can't find them listed on the NYSE or NASDAQ and only at OTCMKTS.

Why are they listed as some sort of over-the-counter penny-stocks?

Why are companies like WMT and EL staples whereas companies like TGT, ULTA, and AZO are discretionary?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 08:05 PM PST

Walmart is classified as a staple but Target is classified as a discretionary.

Estee Lauder is classified as a staple but Ulta Beauty is classified as a discretionary (I know ULTA has physical stores whereas EL does not but this shouldn't differentiate staple and discretionary).

Also, companies like Autozone are classified as discretionary, not staples, which seems to make no sense.

Does anyone have any theories as to why this is? Thanks.
