Question about vehicle total loss and Actual Cash Value

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 01:46 PM PST

I bought a brand new vehicle on 11/25 around 9PM. At 5PM the following day was rear-ended and the car was declared a total loss by the other drivers insurance due to significant frame damage. The car had less than 100 miles on it (driven just three trips including the drive home from the dealership). Allstate informed me they would have an Actual Cash Value for me this week, but were having a hard time getting a valuation due to how new the vehicle is. I put $5k down on the vehicle and financed the rest.

Question: I've never been in a situation like this before, so I'm not sure what to expect. The vehicle is so spanking new that I cannot imagine it depreciating that much, or enough for me to have to pay out of my pocket for anything. If it does, can I do anything about it? The other driver was also a USPS Carrier and had decals at the time of the wreck. Not sure if this makes any difference. Does anyone have any experience with this, or suggestions or anything?

    Additional insured q

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:33 AM PST

Is there ever a possibility where an Additional Insured Scheduled Endorsement (such as CG 20 10) can become blanket if the agent puts blanket language in the AI box?

    Thank you!

Bodily injury over policy limit (Texas) Can I expect to see any real compensation?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 07:59 PM PST

Not sure if this should be in r/legaladvice, let me know and I'll move it. And sorry for my terrible ability to write.

    This happened in Austin, Texas.

I (A Motorcyclist) was riding in the right hand lane ~50 mph down an empty road. (6 a.m.)

Someone attempted a left hand turn across me and had a running start out of a Hospira Pharmaceutical Facility. I didn't see them until I was 5 ft from them. I T-boned them in the driver's B-pillar/rolled over the car and flew 30 ft. I remember the smack of my torso hitting the car/the morning stars from my supine landing but not the in between.

I spent 4 days in the I.C.U. with a stage 3 lacerated liver, 3 fractured ribs, left clavicle/sternum fracture, right arm was dislocated and my socket was chipped about 30%, torn ligament in my knee, I'm sure there's more. (Expected to make a decent recovery without surgery but goddamn am I far from pre-accident strength. (In pain all the time/have no range of motion/have to sleep in a recliner/fear dislocation at all times)

I'm a plumber so I've been unable to work for months and have had one week under my belt recently just to pay bills as I don't have health insurance. Looking at 115K in medical bills and have paid several of those out of pocket. (Only actually received 35K in bills that I had to request but discovered a medical lien last Thurs that accounts for the rest)

The at fault driver has Progressive and they admitted liability/ have offered their policy limit of 30K with a B.S. waiver.

I can file for another 30K with my Geico UM but that is not enough obviously. I know the bill can be dropped as I still don't know what constitutes the 60+ thousand dollar jump on my tab.

I'm waiting to hear back from a lawyer as I thought I could handle this insurance-wise when the bill was 35ish.

Can Progressive offer me anything more to not go after their driver? Or is 30K it/better sue?

Question about health insurance along side Medicare.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 05:32 PM PST

So my mother in law is a non-American. She's been paying into the system for just under 5 years and she will shortly be eligible for Medicare part B.

She is not Eligible for Part A (at least subsidized yet). Is it possible to concurrently have another insurance plan that will cover what Part B doesn't?

If so is there anything I need to be aware of and which one would the primary?

So I just drove off with the nozzle

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 06:48 PM PST

I just drove off with the nozzle in my SUV and it detached. I put the nozzle back on then left. I'm nervous as hell right now because I've been researching and some of the repairs can get pricey and I don't have the money. I don't know what to do. Any advice?

Anybody in this subreddit work/worked in SIU?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 02:58 PM PST

I currently carry my P&C license for several states, have been selling insurance for about 7 months now and I actually enjoy the subject. I currently go to school for criminology and plan on finishing in hopefully 2 years, I wanted to move straight to SIU upon finishing school however my manager strongly recommended I get some claims experience, however my job only offers full time positions for claims and I can only work part time in sales at this time. Does anybody have any tips for which section of claims to move to? I was interested in injury and would try to apply when I'm close to finishing school. Any other tips for someone recently joining the insurance industry? I appreciate your help

When will insurance pay my body shop?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:52 PM PST

So I've gotten an estimate on cost and taken it to a shop of my choice. Once the work is done, how would insurance pay the shop?

Would the shop contact my insurance company directly?

Does the Florida Blue Card cover OBGYN and childbirth? I can't find any specific info on what it covers.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 04:19 PM PST

I live in Florida. I was informed that the Department of Health gives Blue Cards to people who make below a certain amount. I just found out I'm pregnant, despite all attempts not to be, and I'm worried that I won't be able to afford anything. I've tried looking up what is covered by Florida Blue Card but I cannot find the answer. Can anyone please help me find an answer?

Should I be mentally preparing for my car to be totaled?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:01 PM PST

Hey everyone, auto insurance question -

I live in central Florida and drive a higher-end trim of a 2013 Prius with under 70,000 miles.

Back in early August I was the victim of a three-car sideswipe incident. I was not found at fault under any circumstance, I got my car repaired to the tune of $4,500 and was on my merry way.

Today (four months later), central Florida struck again and I got rear-ended at a traffic signal. Considering the circumstances I don't believe I would be found at fault for this one either, I believe the other driver even received a traffic ticket. That repair will likely involve, at least, the replacement of the bumper and bumper cover (since it fell off and got all cracked up), plus whatever else the body shop finds. Luckily, my back hatch and my (expensive) taillights were spared.

My question is - with two pretty big accidents happening in such quick succession, should I be preparing for my insurance company to just write my car off so they don't have to deal with it anymore?

I've already been told that I won't be dropped and my rates won't go up since I'm not at fault for either accident, but should I start looking for other vehicles?

I understand there are so many variables involved but I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation on either the customer or the insurer / adjuster end.

    Thanks so much!

Progressive insurance quote, save almost 150 bucks per month? How?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:01 PM PST

I just did a home and auto insurance quote on Progressive, and it's telling me, that it will only cost 110 dollars a month (auto only) if paid in full for 3 cars, for 6 months (one car full coverage). I currently pay 260 a month with geico. Did not bundle home with them.

    100/300/100k Liability, 100/300k uninsured, and 15k personal.

Did I make a mistake somewhere, or is this normal?

Edit: Might be because of this "Sign Online" discount. Says its a one time discount, for first 6 month of policy.

    Renters Insurance in WA

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 12:32 PM PST

So yesterday, there was a small stove fire on the 3rd floor of my apartment building. It set off the sprinklers and flooded all the floors beneath the 3rd floor. I'm on the first floor and I came home to a puddle in the hallway along with the office raining. There were already people there that the apartment called trying to clean up the water. I was told by my apartment manager that I can get a hotel but I am not required to and to charge it to my insurance due to the fact that it's going to be super noisy while they worked on cleaning it and it was already 1:30 am.

I went to a motel and haven't contacted my insurance yet. I just wanted to know, the water damage I have in my apartment specifically was a leak from the hallway puddle into my place. Does that mean that technically the damage is done from the buildings hallway or is this still something with my insurance? Do I charge my insurance for the hotel then or my apartment building?

Short term disability and maternity leave: filed a month ago, haven’t heard from them. Is this normal?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 08:56 PM PST

Pregnant, due on January 1st. STD coverage through my employer. According to the policy documents, I qualify no problem.

I was told I could file the paper work whenever I wanted but most women waited until they were close to their due date. I submitted my paper work in the second week of November. It was confirmed by HR that all 3 portions of the paper work were submitted.

My question is, do they wait until after I've had the baby or my FMLA starts to make a decision regarding my claim? The company brags about having a 7 day period between the claim and the decision, but does this not count for me because I'm technically not disabled yet?

I'm just trying to plan ahead and make sure this is normal. Thanks so much!

A tree removal co. knocked a branch onto my car- is it an auto claim or personal property claim- and does it make any difference? The company says they will "take care of it" and I have their insurance info. The house was also damaged- just gutters.

Insurance company denying my (possible) repair bill

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 01:30 PM PST

Hello r/Insurance! It has been almost 2 months since I got rear ended and the other party's insurance has already accepted 100% liability. The issue is as follows: They deemed my car a total loss with a $4000 repair cost and valued my car at $2500 (both were inaccurate valuations but for the sake of example we'll go with it). I responded that I can get it fixed for $1600, which is within their 70% total loss threshold. The claims adjuster denied me and said that since it was already deemed a total loss, they are going to treat it like a total loss no matter what and what I do with the car after it has been deemed such is good for me. Which seems absolutely ridiculous considering the car would be repaired within their total loss threshold, and it is a repair bill vs. an estimate. She also stated that it was deemed a total loss by the state (they operate in Michigan but the accident occurred in Minnesota) which also does not make any sense. So overall I am wondering whether or not they can deny a repair bill and go with their inaccurate estimate of repairs — effectively totaling a non-totaled car. Thank you!

EPO vs. HMO - ACA Marketplace 2020

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 01:12 PM PST

I know the difference between an HMO and a PPO. I'm currently covered under a PPO, but it's COBRA and very expensive so I'm using the marketplace to find alternatives.

    Info:

-Not expecting hospital visit, but would like to be covered for emergency care.

    • one regular dr visit every 3 months - based on my PPO claim details, the amount billed is $120. Currently I pay $47. But $120 every 3 months is not a huge cost and many of the plans I'm viewing of both categories have him in-network.

    • regular prescription meds: 3 monthly: 2 generic, 1 not (vyvanse) that is very expensive generally (~$250/month), but my dr. Has a coupon that brings it down to $30/month. I assume the coupon would work for either plan.... unless?

    • my current plan has a max script payment of $60/medication refill. I'd like to maintain something like this, but understand it all rests within the plan benefit details page.

In my state (TX), only HMO and EPOs are available.

I've done some looking, and it seems EPOs are between an HMO and PPO: only local provider choices, must be in-network, no referrals needed, emergency care (possibly?) covered for non-network.

I'm a bit confused because based on the explanations I've read, EPO seems to have better "features" than an HMO. But prices between seemingly comparable plans are cheaper for EPO options.

Am I missing an obvious disadvantage to EPOs vs. HMOs that I'm not mentioning? Prescription drug coverage is essential. General Differences here between the plan types?

Anyone have one of these plans that has come across unexpected disadvantages?

Need to enroll by Dec 15. Thanks.

Vehicle Diminished Value Due to Structural Damage-- 1 year later with Geico

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 12:54 PM PST

Hey R/Insurance community. Have a situation that my wife and I got into and we need some help.

About a year ago (8/2018) my wife was rear-ended and the party at fault had Geico as their insurance company. We took it to the local Geico Collision Center and they had an adjuster look at it and ultimately repair it. Repair cost totaled around $4,600 and we were told it was 65% of the value of the vehicle. (2013 hyundai Elantra)

One year later-- We went to trade her car in this weekend to upgrade it and the dealership wouldn't take her car because the Carfax has a reported accident with structural damage from the incident last year. You can imagine our surprise when the dealership notified us of the fact it has structural damage and it was worth next to nothing.

We reached out to Geico via the 800 number and they're setting us up with a Diminished Value Claim. That department is closed on the weekend and we'll have to get with them tomorrow (Monday) to find out where we stand.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Do we have any chance of getting reimbursed for the diminished value due to structural damage on her car that we weren't told about?

From what we can tell, if the insurance company had to repair structural damage as well as reimburse us for diminished value on the vehicle, it probably would've put it over the threshold for them to total the car.

We're in Florida, if that makes any difference.

I'm happy to answer any questions pertaining to the details if it'll help.

    TIA for any/all responses!!

    Health Insurance - Coinsurance?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 04:28 PM PST

I am recently divorced, and I'm shopping for some new health insurance (I am self-employed). My ex used to take care of all of this, and while I understand most of it, I do have one question, to help me make the best choice for me and my kids.

A policy I'm looking at states " $10 copayment in-network / 60% coinsurance out-of-network". I understand the copayment in-network. What I'm not sure about is coinsurance? Does that mean that if I go out-of-network, they will cover 60% of the bill, or they will cover 40% with me responsible for the 60%? Or am I just totally confused?

Thanks, in advance, for any advice!

Insurance Policy Analyst - Which Advice Would You Give To A New (and Nervous) Employee In This Position?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:28 AM PST

    Hello everyone.

Which advice would you give to a person that is going to start working as an insurance policy analyst, that performed a lot of analytical work before, and has no experience in the insurance industry despite having basic knowledge of insurance companies?

Some of the requirements include entering insurance data into the company's systems, producing quotations and monitoring reports, endorsements and other insurance certificates, performing clearing checking and handling exception items, among other things. This includes daily communication with underwriters.

All the information / advice / data would be welcomed. Which are the must-know things and the issues to pay attention to?

    Thanks beforehand.
