Newly installed fridge was done incorrectly and leaked water through my floor. Insurance

Newly installed fridge was done incorrectly and leaked water through my floor.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:06 PM PST

Got a fridge installed last Sunday from Best Buy. Found out tonight after going into our spare bedroom in the basement it has been leaking through the floor and basement ceiling.

Obviously there is a lot of water damage. My question is, can I start removing the drywall and carpet?

Best Buy made a claim with their insurance and will contact me next week. I'm concerned about mold buildup until they have an adjuster come out.

    Thanks in advance.

[TX] My auto insurance is about to skyrocket. No one will insure me for less than $7000/6mo. What do I do?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:21 AM PST

I would like to preface this by explaining how aware I am that I have bad driving habits and I shouldn't be driving. I'm here asking for a way to stop driving, so I don't have to insure myself. I have a large amount of points on my record—9 in 2017 alone, all of which will fall off in about 12 months (No, I don't know how my license hasn't been suspended either.) I also have a major not-at-fault accident that year too. I assume that's also counting against me even though I couldn't help being hit by someone who ran a red light.

I already feel terrible about my driving history, and so does my wallet—my insurance has been insanely expensive this year. I now own an eScooter which I drive to work so I don't drive hardly at all anymore. I also started leasing a new car, which has helped me kick my speeding habit thanks to the ACC. I don't have to touch the gas or brake hardly at all when I make long trips to visit my girlfriend or parents.

    Timeline of events:

    • 2017: 9 points on record for various tickets, major not-at-fault accident
    • 2018: two minor fender-benders and a couple speeding tickets
    • Early 2019: got off my parents insurance, premium started at ~$450/mo
    • Mid 2019: one no-seatbelt citation dismissed via defensive driving; I get an e-Scooter for my commute
    • October 2019: I begin leasing a 2019 Civic, insurance premium goes up to ~$600/mo
    • Yesterday: Insurance agent tells me Progressive said they are going to raise my rates to over $1600/mo in January when my 6-month term ends, and he doesn't know why; says maybe I got moved up a "bracket"?

So starting in early January, I will not be able to afford any "regular" insurance. I've shopped around, and no one will insure me for less than $1000 a month. What are my options moving forward? I'm open to anything.

I already don't commute to work, so I want to just stop driving somehow. I need someone else to be the insured driver. Are there any loopholes I can take advantage of? Here is what my lease contract says about insurance. My girlfriend is in the market for a new car, would her insurance company insure my car in her name?

I am considering other options such as selling the car (Honda doesn't do lease transfers), but for the sake of this post I'm curious about keeping the car because that would be the cheapest option even if I keep making payments on the car.

Another question maybe someone can answer: if I were to just not renew my policy in January and stop driving, how likely is it that Honda would find out and provide their own insurance at my expense?

    Lease details:

    • 2019 Honda Civic EX-L Sedan, $380/month, DFW area
    • Had the car for less than 2 months, it's in pristine condition
    • 34 payments left out of 36, almost 2k miles used out of 12k miles a year

TLDR: I need a creative way to not be the insured driver on my lease, because I need to stop driving for a year until my insurance becomes affordable again.

Broke a bone, needed surgery. Insurance medical handbook AND the surgeon said broken bones would not cost me anything other than the co-pays. Now being billed for EOB amounts, in the thousands. What? And can no longer access medial handbook...

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:59 PM PST

Broke a bone from an accident, needed surgery. I worked (past tense) at a hospital and the surgeon (who I presume has the same PPO as I) fixed the fractured bone. The surgeon told me BEFORE the surgery that I would only need to pay the co-pays for my visits and everything else would be covered. And of course, I don't have that in writing or anything. My medical handbook implied the same thing - a fracture and necessary fixes to the fracture would be covered. Now two months after the surgery I am getting multiple bills matching my EOB coinsurance percentages to an amount of money I do not have.

Here's where it gets more tricky — I left my hospital job and thus my PPO shortly after the surgery so I can no longer access my medical benefits handbook, as I'm now a nonmember. (Spoke to customer service and I could receive a hard copy in the mail in the coming weeks, which should help.)

What do I do? If a fracture from an accident is covered according to my medical handbook, should I still be receiving bills for various surgery components? (Anesthesia, ambulatory outpatient services, etc.) Perhaps I misread my medical handbook?

I think I really fucked up

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:08 AM PST

After viewing my most recent paycheck I realized then when I added my wife to my insurance through my job(county employee in northern California) I think I accidentally enrolled us into the wrong plan. Basically before I didn't have to pay anything out of my check. Almost $400 was pulled out of my most recent check. My checks are only about a grand each so it is an amount that I am not going to be able to pay whatsoever. Is there anything I can do? My wife is due in January do I have to deal with it until then? Would it be possible to get the first $400 back? Please help.

Would I still need to pay my deductible for an injury claim if the deductible for the damage claim was paid?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:58 PM PST

I got into an accident that wasnt my fault. I went through my insurance to get the car repaired and the other parties insurance paid back the repairs and deductible to my insurance. I went to the doctor for neck injury a month after the accident and I originally wanted to go through my health insurance because I wasn't quite sure if the neck injury was related to the accident but my doctors believed it was a result of the accident so they went to the other parties insurance and they denied the claim. My doctors pushed everything through without informing me what insurance they were going to bill and left me kind of in the dark. They just told me they are billing my insurance. Will I have to pay for the deductible?

Adding car to insurance policy causes other car’s monthly rate to increase

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:55 PM PST

Right now I have, I have a family auto insurance policy with 3 cars on it, and my 4 family members. When I was attempting to add a car to the policy for my son (no accidents) the insurance on 1 of the cars on the policy increased by $50 a month. Why would adding his car increase the price of my wife's car? He does not drive her car and does not even live in the same city. The other 2 cars on the policy do not change in price.

Went to hospital for pneumonia, but realized my insurance was a couple days inactive. My insurance is now active and the hospital is billing me. What steps do I take next?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:54 PM PST

This is my first post on this sub.

Basically last Friday, I went to the hospital late at night after getting extremely sick. I got diagnosed with pneumonia and was there for a few hours. I gave them my insurance card upon arrival and before I left they told me it came up as I was uninsured. I then realized the date and it was a couple days past my insurance due date and I had to pay it. My insurance has been active all year until this incident. When they told me I paid it on my phone while in the hospital, and was able to leave. My insurance has been active ever since then. Well, they sent me a notice of my charges in the mail with a note saying I was uninsured at the time.

My question is, what should I do now? Am I liable for these thousands of dollars in charges since when I went my insurance wasn't active? Or should I call the hospital and let them know to run my insurance info again since it's active?

I'm 19 and from Georgia USA if that matters.

    Question about State Farm Auto.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:36 PM PST

I called the 1800 number for State Farm and told them I didn't want to get a quote from an agent. My quote was $106.00 monthly for auto. For craps and giggles I called my local SF agent and got a quote through him and it was $234 a month. I went with the former. Why are local agents so much higher than the 1800 service for State Farm?

In good hands... but am I really, though?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:20 PM PST

I'm currently insured with Dean Winters' favorite insurance company. A couple weeks ago, my husband slid off the road in slushy conditions and took out the front passenger corner of the family car as well as a utility pole. He is totally fine, not even whiplash, but the airbag went off and there was enough damage that the car was totaled. The insurance company used CCC One for the valuation and we're pretty sure we're not being treated fairly. It's a 2008 Honda Odyssey with about 157k miles. The body was in fantastic condition and there was very little rust underneath on the frame or anything when we bought it less than a year ago (and minimal rust is pretty hard to find if you live anywhere the roads are salted in winter). There were a lot of extras in that car (heated leather seats, moon roof, backup camera, tow package, etc.), plus we absolutely require that 8th seat to fit our family. The CCC One valuation report valued the car at about $3200. There were only two other vehicles selected for comparison in the CCC One report, at a couple different dealerships 70+ and 90+ miles away. Those listings can no longer be found (I tried googling VINs, stock numbers, etc.) so I cannot make a comparison on my own and am at the mercy of whatever information was provided in the valuation. I will say that based on the info in the report, they both seemed like awfully low prices when compared to every other Odyssey of similar year/mileage I can currently find for sale within a 100 mile radius (neither of the comparisons in the report had the tow package, either). I understand that they aren't going to go by a dealer's asking price, but I really think my car is worth more than their estimate. How do I go about negotiating this? I'm not looking to squeeze blood from a stone here, but I do think they ought to come up a little more. Any advice at all? Or are we completely at their mercy?

    Homeowners - detached structure

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:18 PM PST

I've been shopping around for a new homeowners policy. I live in a house with a detached garage apartment (living space above garage which we rent out). I received the quote and they told me that they had to put the detached garage under a separate policy. I asked why but her explanation didn't make much sense to me.

Can anyone venture to guess the reason? Is it because it's detached or because it's rented?

If it's because it's a rental, could I ask for it to be included in the main house policy instead? I'm not sure if or how that saves on premiums or exposes me for coverage.

I'm trying to become more educated on this topic before I go back to them.

    Thanks

    Auto Insurance Issue

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 02:44 PM PST

A 18 year old kid hit my wife's car on highway from behind. He has Anchor General Insurance who seem to be very unhelpful. We still have not got rental car from them. What is the process for this. Do we need to file case against the other insurance company or go through our insurance(Geico).

Edit: I am from bay area california. Also other insurance called and accepted fault but seem to push back when we asked for rental car. We are anyway renting on our own as we cannot be without a car.

Also another concern is what if other party does not have sufficient insurance to pay for the damage, Would Geico cover the rest.

    Thanks to everyone for responding.

Neighbor damaged car we were trying to sell, wants to go through his insurance

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:33 AM PST

My boyfriend was trying to sell his old 1992 Toyato MR2 (not the turbo). It's an interesting car that gets a lot of views, but the car itself is in really bad shape. It doesn't start but still runs when jumped, has body damage and interior damage, and he was asking for $500 for it, and likely to get $400.

Our neighbor recently damaged the car with his giant metal truck. The front of the MR2 is mangled by the left light and it's unsellable now - it was always going to be a project car for someone who really wanted to build up a cool old car, but now it's not even that. The people who were interested aren't anymore, except for the guy who will pick it up for scrap.

We had to leave a note on the neighbor's truck to text us and he did this morning saying that he would prefer to go through insurance. I have a hard time actually seeing what insurance will say in this situation. It's obviously totaled, it's never been 'worth' repairing unless you were an enthusiast.

I just want some insight on what the likely insurance response would be. It seems foolish on our neighbor's part to file a claim when the value of the vehicle involved in so small. There's no way anybody is repairing this car, and what little value it has lies entirely in its rarity, despite it's bad condition.

Can anybody share their thoughts on how this would play out if we did file a claim with this guy's insurance company?

EDIT: Thank you all for answering questions. I guess we are just going to file a claim and cross our fingers they offer something close to what we were expecting before the damage. This probably seemed pretty obvious to you all, but it helped to have other people weigh in. Thanks.

[CALIFORNIA] Question regarding Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist insurance

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:41 PM PST

So i'm shopping around for motorcycle insurance and I notice most people are saying that getting uninsured motorist insurance is a no brainer, you absolutely need it, etc.

However, I just got off the phone with Geico, I have auto/motorcycle insurance with them now. The agent told me that uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance only covers medical expenses, nothing for lost wages or pain or suffering and that I would have to sue for that. Also I have pretty great medical insurance, out-of-pocket max of $4k, which I got accident insurance to cover most of that. Also called my medical insurance and asked them specifically about coverage with a motorcycle accident if I had one, and they said they absolutely cover me.

So now I'm curious - do I really need that Underinsured/Uninsured motorist insurance? Am I overlooking something? I would not mind paying for it if it's truly important but my rate doubles from $30 to $60 a month with it.

Should I buy a car yet? What would you do?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:40 AM PST

Someone rear-ended me about a week ago and totaled my car. He was under insured, so my insurance kicked in. I have documentation from State Farm saying that my car is totaled. The paperwork exchange has begun between State Farm and my lien holder. I have gap insurance through my lien holder. I have my contract verifying gap coverage.

I have confirmation that State Farm is paying their share for the total loss, but I currently do not have any confirmation (just yet) that my gap will be paid. My contract seems pretty clear, however, that it will and should be. It is not an excessive amount, about $7,500.

I have a great policy with high limits... but idiot me *face palm* doesn't have rental coverage. I am without a vehicle and need transportation pretty soon. Uber is getting expensive.

Would you buy a new car in this situation or wait until all the paperwork is finalized? I was told dealerships can make some phone calls an get verification/promises that things will be paid, etc.

Got hit from an uninsured motorist and was told I had to pay collision deductible vs uninsured motorist deductible

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:20 AM PST

So its early in the morning and I reported my accident from last night the claims agent on the phone said I would have to pay my collision deductible (1k) going thru my insurance.

I have a police report and the other drive was uninsured according to police on the scene before they were taken away by ambulance. My uninsured motorist deductible is only 250.

Is it common to be just told the collision deductible before the insurance company verifies the police report?

Brother recently turned 18 and is still under my health insurance. Will there be issues?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 07:59 AM PST

I have been the guardian of my 22M brother 18M for a couple years now. He just turned 18 a few days ago and open enrollment with my employer passed a few months ago and I thought nothing of it. My coworkers mentioned that I should consult someone about this because it is not known if there would be issues with this set up.

Looking at the benefits panel at work it has always considered him under "my children", which maybe some confusion comes from. I'm scared of contacting the insurance and cause an issue for his coverage as he no longer has any income (he used to receive survivors benefits) and he tends to want to go to the doctor very often. I need to talk to the lawyers about other matters regarding his trust fund but I'm unaware if they know anything regarding this before the meeting.

Currently in southern Nevada with company sponsored BCBS.

30 year state farm customer here

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:02 AM PST

I have been with SF for now 30 years. My wife is accident free, I don't think I've had an accident since 1997. I hit road debris and had a claim this year, about $2300 in repairs. I also I had a home claim from a leak this year- that was about $2300 also. Other than that- only claims I can recall are two occasions of roof repair from hail, and one car claim from hail. I think my rates are two high. I pay 200 for two vehicles full coverage. An 1800 premium on a $170K house. I live in the South. I went to a big insurance broker to shop rates, but they couldn't shop coverages since I had these claims this year. Insurance is an emotional purchase, you kind of stick with it and don't think much about it. But I think it's time to shop around. Any strategies or tips?

    Medical insurance question

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:42 AM PST

Please answer only if you are 100% sure. I've run into a problem and I'm trying to do some research on this subject. I had medical through my previous employer but I had my two weeks notice in and final day on the second week of the month. I just got a letter from them saying because I was insured for the month of November and was only paid one check I need to pay for the remainder of medical for that month? Am I required to pay this even though I quit? The company was a medium sized medical office.

Hit an unmarked curb and damaged my car

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 06:56 AM PST

I was in a gas station parking lot.
They have lines showing to drive up to the air machine.
If you pull up, you are against an old, broken-down curb that is the same color as the pavement.
You CANNOT see this from your car. And it is INTENTIONAL to pull up.
There is a bit of rebar in it - I think there used to be a post there, but it was removed.

My quarter panel was popped out, my tire lost 15PSI in a 10 minute drive, and the tail light was snapped in half.

I am worried about hidden damage - there are a lot of crumple zones in there.
Can I hold them responsible? I can't afford my deductible right now.

What do I tell car insurance about impaired driving?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:43 AM PST

To make a long story short here for you guys, I hit a tree while drinking and driving, police showed up (not tested there went straight to the hospital), I never got charged with a DUI, and the only people with my BAC are the hospital. The hospital I was sent to tried to run through my car insurance, even though obviously we did not want to use car insurance on a vehicle we were just scrapping anyways. So now my car insurance is calling to ask me the standard list of questions when you crash your vehicle. Is there a workaround the were you impaired while driving section? If I'm not being charged (don't quite understand why) then maybe i can avoid this question so I don't get my entire family booted off of the insurance policy? Any help/past experiences are appreciated.
