Can you teach me about a problem you face in your business so I can build software to solve it?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 02:51 AM PST

I'm a developer looking to start a new project and I would love to talk about your work and the industry you're in.

My aim is to solve a problem by creating software I can the market to others with the same problem.

If I end up creating a solution based on our interaction then you will get access to the software for free - which I think is more than fair!

My experience revolves mainly around web development, but I am also experienced in data science and deep learning. I have no problem at all getting into a new space for this either, as I enjoy starting anew 😊

Here are some ideas of things to look for:

    • Do you use spreadsheets? What for? Do you wish you could automate that job?
    • Do you have to repeat a task every so often that is too boring for your employees?
    • Where does your business stand to gain more growth in revenue, and what parts of that process could you automate?
    • Where does your business stand to lower expenses more drastically, and what parts of that process could you automate?

If you see a problem in your industry and would like to have it solved by a professional developer for free, and don't mind others being able to pay for access to the same solution, then hit me up in the DMs!

New, small indie designer: Large museum wants to stock my items for an upcoming exhibition, asking for my terms and conditions. What do I have to consider?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 07:18 AM PST

Hello! I hope this might be the right channel to ask for some advice - and thank you in advance!

I am new to running a small business as a side hobby, where I design and sell small enamel pins online. Things have really taken off the past few months, and an exciting opportunity has come up.

A large museum has emailed me (specifically their shop's merchandising department), and has identified a few of my designs which they are looking to stock, to tie in with an upcoming exhibition that will be running for 4 months in the new year. I sense that the request is legit - and have done preliminary background checks - but will still approach this cautiously.

In any case, I have no experience with any form of wholesale/consignment stock arrangements, and am wondering if any of you have advice on what I should be considering.

The museum has asked for my 'conditions' before they place a first order, and only have a vague understanding of what these might be. Please feel free to point me to a key words / topics to google my way through.

Thank you so much for your help and advice!

Email tracking software? Hubspot no longer effective.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 06:43 PM PST

I used to love using Hubspot Activity Tracker to track my emails.

This simple Outlook plug-in would track who, where, when, how many times, at what time, what device (phone or computer), and what contact would open my emails. This was very useful when sending a proposal to a prospect.

But now, because of European privacy laws, Hubspot has pretty much gutted most of the tracking features and the $50/mo fee is no longer a good value. I've tried Saleshandy (crappy interface, hard to use) and Yesware (not much better) as alternatives so far - not happy with either of them.

Can anyone recommend a good email tracker that works as an Outlook plug-in or Windows app? Thanks for any help here!

LLC S Corp designation change, profit maneuvering. HELP....

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 04:30 AM PST

OK, here is some background on my company.

Small telecom company, 25 employees, dual ownership, 50/50, currently LLC

2017 - broke even, but got a large payout EOY of 240k, CPA didn't encourage escrow or designation of funds, so took a huge profit with no money and paid for it...

2018- just about broke even again, EOY books showed a profit of -123k, was encouraged to stay an llc until we made money

2019 - EOY total profit should be 850k or so, we are still currently an LLC. Paid 14k in fees because CPA forgot to file unemployment docs Q1...

I have a meeting with a tax lawyer in a week or so to see my options, but my questions are as follows:

My CPA said we should not backdate the LLC to an s corp for 2019... even tho from my understanding I will be paying 15.3% UE tax on all 800+k, instead of just on the owner's salaries, which would total around 150k. Is it possible to migrate profits from 2019 to 2020 and eat all profits from 2019 in 2020 when I am an s corp? or am I about to be screwed again by this "family friend" CPA for another 120k...?

The preferred method for getting an s corp designation is to file the docs before march 15t of the year you want to file, but it can be done later. I know there are very specific reasons why you can or can't backdate the designation, but is it super difficult? if you request it in December are they going to deny it?

I know the lawyer will be helping me with a lot of this, as well as our new CPA, i was just looking for some background information so I'm not going in completely blind, I am unable to find the specific answers online because of theyre so specific...

    Being Alienated/Close People Turning Away

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 10:17 PM PST

    Looking for feedback!

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 12:08 AM PST

I am currently in an entrepreneurship class and I have been assigned to think of a product idea and get feedback on that idea. I have made a website with information on my idea and I put a comments page for any suggestions. In the spring, I will try to make my idea an actual product and hopefully start my own business.

    Here is the website: https://www.myspot.store/

My product is a traveling divider. I got this idea from noticing the large number of people that are sick when traveling and thought a divider would be a good way to prevent sickness from being spread in a contained space. There are also some airlines that have dividers installed in their plane seats, so by branching off of that idea I would like to create a universal seat divider that can be used in any type of transportation vehicle.

I don't know the whole engineering process yet on how the product will be made. My goal for now is to just get feedback on what people think about the product idea.

    Thank you!

When Do You Take Your Side Hustle Full Time?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:15 AM PST

I've been running a small web agency for a few years. Each year has, thankfully, been an increase in income. 2019 has been the best year yet, with me hitting the highest income I've been able to reach, over 5x what I made last year. I've needed to bring on some freelancers to assist, and projections of work in the pipeline indicate 2020 will be continued growth.

This has been my side hustle, as I've also worked a full time job. But I'm hitting the point of diminishing returns in each the FT job and the side hustle: I'm spending so much time on each that I'm starting to feel that I'm not doing either well. I've had a few moments where I've had to turn down business because I did not have the time to do it myself, nor the depth on my bench to be able to do the work well.

Ultimately, one is going to have to give. I would like to go all-in on my own work, but it still presents a risk.

What questions do I need to be asking? For those who have been in similar situations, what helped you make the decision either way?

How do you start your own independent Clothing store?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:04 AM PST

Hi. I love clothing and in the last couple of days I got really inspired by an old friend of mine (who owns his own small store) to start a small clothing store in the future. I don't know where to begin and how the ins and outs work of getting to that point of opening your store and (the hardest part) keeping it open so I figured I'd ask around to find my answers. What's some general information in terms of opening your own Clothing store or just a store in general?

Employee is constantly tardy. Am I making too big a deal about it?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 09:05 PM PST

I'm a warehouse manager at a small start up that has grown quickly over the last couple years. We sell all of our products online. We recently needed to hire someone else since we expended more. Minimum wage is under $8 here and we are paying $16 an hour, full time, 2 weeks paid PTO, major holidays paid, insurance can be purchased, warehouse is climate controlled.

I did interviews and hired someone. He is a good worker and gets along with everyone and seems like a good guy. But he has a problem showing up on time. He constantly calls or texts some excuse, sometimes an hour or 2 after he is supposed to be there. He shares a phone with his gf so actually she is always calling in for him. The most recent excuse was his cat got loose so he had to go chase it down and would be a couple hours late.

I talked to him about his tardiness a month and a half ago and he was pretty good since then except last week 2 days back to back he came in late. We are talking an hour or two late, not 5 minutes. He always calls after he is supposed to be at work too, never ahead of time. We think he may have a drinking problem and is hungover and is having trouble getting up.

Today I talked to him again and told him he can't keep doing this and anywhere else he would have been fired by now. I told him this is his last chance and had him sign a form stating everything we talked about and that the next step would be termination.

I feel bad because he is a good worker when he shows up and he seems like a good guy for the most part. Am I making too big a deal about it? My partner says hiring is such an annoyance that its whatever as long as he gets work done when there. I also feel like a lot of people would be thankful for a somewhat decent job like that and he is showing he doesn't appreciate it

Dumb question - Should I not bother registering my business until after Jan 1 so I don't have to worry about filing any taxes this year?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 03:29 PM PST

I will be launching my company hopefully sometime early to mid 2020, but I'm already purchasing things like web domains, hosting fees, printer, business cards, etc..

Since I haven't registered the company yet and these were all bought via personal funds, they will be rolled into the company somehow as assets. I can't claim them as business expenses.

Therefore, should I really just wait till 2020 to register my company to not worry about having to file taxes?

Small B2B Companies, at what point do you use Account-based Marketing?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 02:23 AM PST

Account-based marketing is not for everyone. It has a lot of benefits as well as drawbacks. However, depending on the size of your business,

    • you may decide to not go ahead with ABM because the drawback cast a huge shadow over its benefits.
    • While on the other end of this spectrum, you may feel benefits will outweigh the drawbacks.

For small businesses, when do you decide to go for Account-based marketing?

    Custom plastic packaging?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 02:04 AM PST

I'm looking for some advice regarding packaging a product in a professional-looking manner. I would like to get some sort of plastic box made for my product, like light weight, easy to open, visibly see the product, roughly 6"x2.5"x1", as well as print.

Does anyone know of any websites that offer this? Can this be a locally sourced thing? I'm totally new to packaging and would really appreciate any info!

Hiring reliable employees for a small sub shop?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 02:00 AM PST

A friend of mine owns a sub shop, but can't find reliable employees. He is the nicest guy (perhaps too nice/lenient with employees) and works all the time. His employees don't show up to work, and he can't fire them because he can't find reliable replacements. He pays about three dollars over minimum wage, plus tips, so I realize he can't find stellar people, but what resources would you recommend? And how would you recommend he screen potential employees to determine which will be reliable?

How to get started with taxes as a small business/LLC?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST

    Hi all,

I tried searching the sub before reaching out but it seems like a lot of questions are specific to states. I started an LLC this year selling an online software I created. It's pretty simple, but I can't find a clear explanation on how to get started with paying taxes without getting bombarded with ads.

I've tried reaching out to local accountants, but all are charging $2k for a year of support or $250/hr (Massachusetts). As a (very) small business -- this would put me further into debt.

Is there a good guide or app out there that will guide me through how to get started with paying taxes? I'm pretty straight forward... paid a lot out of pocket, am now starting to generate some profit. Have transferred some money to my personal account to pay off the bills of starting up.

(Hope I'm not abusing this sub. Struggling to find where to start!)

    1099 or SCorp/LLC

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 05:36 PM PST

Long story short. I'll be working a job next year that'll pay me a total of 10k for the year and the employer has told me it'll be a 1099 unless I want to start my own scorp or llc. I also work a 9-5 and make around 75k a year doing that on a normal W2 what is my best option?

    Missed opportunity with mentor/partner.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 08:38 PM PST

Many years ago, when i was 14 or so if my mind serves me right, I met a man who was a realestate agent, realestate investor, and bought distressed businesses to turn them around for profit. Now that i personally own two businesses and have been looking at buying a 3rd to bring in a management team and make very passive, I've started to wonder why i never took the opportunity to even meet with him. It's one of those moments you look back on and really didnt know what you had until later in life. Doe's anyone have suggestions on how i could get back in contact with this man? I remember that I met him when he was showing an estate that my parents had considered purchasing. I still have the exact place in my head and dont know if its possible to look up realtors for deals that have already happened. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Would it be strange for me to discount my services to someone I need help from?

An accountant wanted me to do his website but I was too expensive. Can I offer him a discount if he is willing to help me with some accounting issues?

I know people do things for each other in business (lawyer friend had a client in IT, gave his office new computers etc) so can I suggest this to him or is it weird?

Need help setting up my LLC

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 07:48 PM PST

I'm in need of some serious clarification. All my research is either unclear or conflicting. I am starting a small contracting (construction) based LLC. We are very close to the Wisconsin-Illinois border. We are filing the LLC in Wisconsin, but what I need to know is if I accept jobs in Illinois, am I required to have an LLC through Illinois as well? I know you need a foreign LLC if you have a warehouse, shop, etc. but I cannot find anywhere stating what I need if I am just working a small construction job. Any help would be immensely appreciated.
