Failing bar, nothing I do brings in any business Posted: 28 Dec 2019 04:28 PM PST I've owned my bar for just over 1 year in a small town of about 10k people. I bought the bar from a previous bar owner who owned it for almost 50 years. The bar was not in good shape when I bought it and I maxed out almost all my credit cards - adding up to about 30k - remodeling the bar (luckily I was able to do all the work myself with the help of family). For about a month of being open I was making about 2-3k a week, after about a month everything just went dead. Maybe $50-300 on a Saturday. Now I'm making maybe $30-$50 a night, I've been forced to start working full-time and paying a bartender to be there Wednesday-Saturday, closed Sun-Tues. The thing is that before the bar even opened I would hear from people saying that no one is going to go to the bar and people are boycotting it because 'they know the owner and he's a total asshole' or 'he's some rich kid that got the bar from his parents' or 'he stole the bar from the previous owner'. All just baseless rumors people made up to pass around. Now it's like no matter what I do these people have already made up their minds and just aren't coming. It's like now I have the problem of no one being in the bar, so people will look through the window, see no one and then not come in because no one is in here. Now I barely have enough money to do any kind of events, and even when I do, people just don't show up. Maybe 10-15 people and even then they aren't here for very long. I've tried Live Bands, Karaoke, Raffles, etc. I'm just stuck. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone else dealt with this before? [link] [comments] |
Is there any benefit to dissolving vs removing partner in business split? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 08:48 AM PST My business partner and I have decided to split ways. We are planning to split the debts and assets and she wants to dissolve the business but I feel like it would be a waste to lose the LLC and business and credit history we have developed. Is there any reason why it might be better to just dissolve than to simply remove her as a partner? Am I missing anything here? If I do decide to keep the business what would be the process for removing her? The only thing I can find online is that I need a signed resignation letter but where do I file that with the state (NY)? Would I need to file anything with the IRS? Should I be speaking to an attorney about this or is this something you can manage on your own? [link] [comments] |
How do you guys deal with chargebacks? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 01:28 PM PST I'm in the apparel/custom apparel design business. Had a lady a few months back give us grief over not giving her $70 worth of custom monogramming for free because she dropped about $250 on some workwear apparel. I declined and said I'd give her a discount on that, she wasn't satisfied and made it know prior to walking out. She paid with an Amex -- a card which we are hesitant to accept, but in some cases it's either this or no sale so my employee went through with the transaction. We received a chargeback for the entire sale yesterday; she had notated in the claim that we "did a horrible job on her uniforms." We have her phone number on file and her signed credit card receipt and we've sent it over to our CC merchant; I don't handle this side of our business, but I'm just curious on how likely it is we actually see that money coming back to us. Should note that I have done work for her in the past relating to her business so she wasn't necessarily a first time customer which kind of makes the situation a bit more shittier. Anonymity in creating a business Posted: 28 Dec 2019 11:44 PM PST I'm contemplating creating a small development company to work on derivative products based on a friend's IP she's looking to license out for merch/spinoff work etc. The problem is, this IP carries a community with it that can be personally invasive to the people involved in it. Would it be possible to creative this business and keep my real name/identity out of public record? If so, what are the best methods for doing this? This would be a small potatoes company and I don't anticipate having more than 1-3 employees on payroll. I've looked this up a bit but everything I see seems to be centered around like lawsuit evasion or high dollar issues kind of beyond the scope of what I'm dealing with here. I just don't want some kid from 4chan to be able to google my company's name, find me in a public registry, and send a SWAT team to my house. I don't care if the state knows I own it or if I show up in my private business transactions. [link] [comments] |
What should my estimated growth rate be for my gaming lounge business? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 02:18 PM PST I'm planning to open a gaming lounge in Dallas, Texas. We will be a gaming lounge for the most part and also have a tavern that sells tap and craft beers. I am working on the projected financials right now. I have done some calculations to get the first month's estimated revenue, but I'm not sure what the growth rate should be month to month. I want to estimate on the low side for safety reasons, but I'm still not sure what that low end is. Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2019 12:01 PM PST Anyone have any experience with Nimble CRM? Seems pretty interesting, with Office 365 integration and social aspect being very helpful. Also, it appears to be very "out of the box" with little customization needed. Is that really the case? We're a 2 person shop with me focusing primarily on sales, so if I can spend less time figuring out how to customize and more on actual sales this would be a great solution. Thanks! How does buying a business work--for fiction? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 09:23 PM PST This isn't about a business I own but I am writing a fiction piece, and have worked in a business similar to the one I'm writing about, during two different changes of ownership. However, I was an employee and only saw some of the negotiations, meetings and general duration of the events. If possible, I'd like a little more information on what goes into buying/selling a business. Would anyone be willing to walk me through a couple points? The owner already has an interested buyer through personal contacts. They have already estimated the business's yearly income. What kinds of contracts and papers need to be involved? How long might those papers take to process, realistically? When it happened between my employer and her buyer, the whole process took about two months between us being informed, and a different name showing up on our paychecks. [link] [comments] |
What should I study from the business field Posted: 28 Dec 2019 08:26 PM PST I'm going to run a business (cloth and other things) which my dad runs rn but the problem is, I don't know what to study so I can understand how to manage a business and make it profitable. I want to learn what to do if I encounter certain financial problems or how to expand it by using an effective structures. Those are the kind of things I want to learn from university [link] [comments] |
Launching a tech platform for store owners/grocers retailers - what do you think? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 08:17 PM PST My name is Kavita; I am a DC based technology founder who is working on building a transparent platform to connect retailers with local emerging food and beverage brands. As a brand, it's a pain to "pitch" and showcase your competitive advantage to the right retailers. Every retailer has a different set of requirements based on product quality, customer demand, pricing margins, deliverability and more; it's hard to know what they want before hand.
Please check us out on productscale.net. We are in the initial stages of launching the platform and would like to get your feedback on the problem that we are solving. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2019 07:05 PM PST Hi there, Apologies if this is not the correct forum to ask the following questions but I'm considering setting up a video game studio at the moment here in Ireland and I'm trying to understand whether I should set it up as a sole proprietorship or a limited liability company. I hope to set up a Kickstarter campaign in the next two to three months in order to get the project off the ground and I'm worried that if I receive significant funding(in the thousands) from Kickstarter that I will have to pay more tax on that funding as a sole proprietor than if I had set up my business as a limited liability company beforehand. I'm just wondering does it make sense for me to have the business set up as a LLC in anticipation that I may be able to receive significant funding from Kickstarter and might not have to pay as much tax on that funding compared to just being a sole proprietor? If I receive the Kickstarter funding it will be many months before I'll be able to actually sell the video game so I wont have any income coming into the business at all for perhaps two years. It would be great if I could get advise regarding what I've described above to give me an idea of what to do. Kind regards [link] [comments] |
How to pitch to a large company Posted: 28 Dec 2019 06:25 PM PST I have recently developed software (saas) for insurance companies or more specifically their adjusters. I was able to get a mid-sized company on board, but I have close ties to the company so the sale was pretty easy. However, a much larger company has agreed to meet to discuss the software because it solves a problem they have. I am not flashy in my software or design, I make sure it is programmed exceptionally well and works exactly as the customer needs it to. I am nervous that my lack of flash will not impress. In my full time job, I have met with hundreds of vendors before for software integrations and they all have shiny fluff-filled presentations filled with seemingly bogus statistics of this will save you X amount of time and money and I end up getting bored in the presentation. How do I make sure I nail a presentation to a multi-billion dollar company? I am usually a confident person, but if I get this contract I could be set for a few years so I am really nervous. Any tips on things I should include or avoid in the presentation? Apologies for not disclosing more details about the software. Thank you so much for reading! [link] [comments] |
Math tutor, need ideas how to get students Posted: 28 Dec 2019 06:15 PM PST Hi everyone, I (28F) spent about five years working in corporate analytics. This past May, while I was 32 weeks pregnant with my first child, my position was eliminated. At the time, I planned to have my son, then job hunt after he was about 3 months old. I started going on interviews in October and realized analytics wasn't the right route for me. I decided I wanted to return to tutoring (I tutored in college and then again at Sylvan after completing my masters degree, so a total of about 3 years of tutoring experience). I have posted a couple of times on the Facebook moms groups for my town and the town page as well, and signed up on Wyzant. This kind of job is very word-of-mouth, so it's kind of like once you get a couple of students, you can start to snowball. The question is: how to get started, how to get my name in front of people. Please let me know about any ideas you might have to help me get started. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
[UK] Small Business Questionnaire on 2020 Outlook Posted: 28 Dec 2019 01:26 PM PST Good evening all, I would be really grateful if anyone based in the UK could take 2 minutes (it is averaging at the moment at 1:36) to complete this small survey? I will be forever grateful to all who have and those that continue to do so. [link] [comments] |
Bad reviews left on other business' about my business Posted: 28 Dec 2019 04:11 PM PST I run a small ecommerce site that mainly sells on Etsy. For customers in the area I offer pickup at a couple of local businesses. The other day I received an email from one of them saying that they got several 1 star reviews on google maps and the reviews specifically name my business. I saw the reviews and they are all along the same line ... "total ripoff" , "business owner is a scam artist." I have worked tirelessly to build this brand and now it seems that a person (competitor) is using google to make me look bad and damage my rep within the community. I did some further checking and they did this to another place, again naming my business, that I have no affiliation with whatsoever only that we sell a similar product. I facebook searched all of the reviewers and one of them is a direct competitor and there are several people that she has done this to. I have tried reporting them to google but from what I've read it is nearly impossible to get a review removed, let alone 10+ reviews on two different businesses that aren't mine. Further info: I don't have a physical store so I don't show up on google maps so they can't review me on there. It wouldn't be a big deal if it was just done to me, but bringing other businesses that really have nothing to do with me into this is leaving me hopeless as what to do. Has anyone gone through this before? Is there another way to report these reviews? [link] [comments] |
Client doing shady practice while owing me. Posted: 28 Dec 2019 04:00 PM PST I had a client that said they were closing down thier business due to no money and they would be filing for bankruptcy. Then another VC company came in and bought all of thier assets but none of thier debit. So the company moved to another state and is now fully operational. Then the original owners started another company which only consist of the debit from the original business (including what they owe me). They still haven't paid the debit which is almost a year old now. The company was a corp but not publically traded. Anything I can do or do I just kiss that $40k goodbye? [link] [comments] |
What obvious things am I missing that would prevent me from scaling this up? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 12:18 PM PST Own a small woodworking shop that offers supplies, machines and training classes. I provide materials free of charge to a maker for a product I designed and he fills an order of 10 of the items I would like to sell on my retail side of the woodworking shop. I pay him the agreed-upon per piece price for each finished item. Later, at the point-of-sale, the maker receives 90% of the revenue and I receive 10%. At this point, there is only one such arrangement at the shop, but what if it looks promising as an idea to scale up? What are all the glaring blind spots in this scenario? At what point does one need to get an application to employ homeworkers? Or would this be a 1099 scenario? Has anyone else sustained a business using this structure? Thanks for all info! Do I need to register a DBA for an online business? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 07:24 AM PST I do mail-in repair services for cell phones and most of my customers come from eBay and out of state clients. I don't do foot traffic it's solely online/mail-in. I use Facebook and eBay for advertising/seeking out customers and would like to use a different name than my own. If it's strictly online and I never have customers locally do I still need to register for a DBA? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2019 07:02 AM PST Looking for resources for small business grants, I have been looking on the government website but I was wondering if there were any obscure ones or anything less well known, going into adventure sports and starting my first business. The market I am tapping into is rather new in British Columbia but popular in the locations nearest myself. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2019 10:04 AM PST Am I allowed to open up a bank account for an LLC A that's owned by LLC B of which I am the owner of? I ask this question because when I tried to open a bank account for an LLC I owned, I recall the bank stating that the business cannot be owned by another business. Also wondering, if I already opened up a bank account for LLC A which I am the owner of, then can I transfer ownership of LLC A to LLC B which I am also the owner of and keep the same bank account for LLC A and just let the bank know that ownership of LLC A was transferred to LLC B? If anyone knows how it works, would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
